Almanzo bouwt een huis op de bomenclaim en na hun huwelijk gaat Laura met Almanzo daar wonen.

De tekeningen zijn van Helen Sewell en Mildred Boyle. Vaak een pagina groot met een onderschrift. Ze vertellen duidelijk iets over het hoofdstuk. Eigen manier van tekenen, past en hoort ook bij de boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder. De tekeningen in het boek zijn van kinderen rondom een kachel, Laura aan het studeren bij een lamp, Almanzo die in een slee zit en Laura ophaalt, Laura zit voor een raam te handwerken, Mary die haar kist uitpakt met de familie om zich heen, Laura komt aan bij een schoolgebouw waar een jongetje voor zit, Laura in een mooie jurk en Carrie kijkt toe op het bed, Nellie Oleson in de buggy met Almanzo en Laura, Laura ment Barnum, Almanzo en Laura in de schemer voor hun eerste kus, een naaimachine, een katje onder Laura’s rok in de kerk, Pa speelt viool en Laura zit in de deuropening en Laura in de buggy neemt afscheid van haar familie na haar huwelijk.

Eigen mening:

Oud, maar nog een heel netjes boek. In goede staat. Ik heb het voor de tekeningen. Ik heb uiteindelijk nog een ander deel gekocht, wat er iets netter uitzag. Ik heb het boek dus 2x.

Her unique drawing style also fits and belongs to Laura Ingalls Wilder's books. The drawings in the book depict children around a stove, Laura studying by a lamp, Almanzo sitting in a sleigh picking up Laura, Laura sitting by a window doing needlework, Mary unpacking her box with her family around her, Laura arriving at a schoolhouse with a little boy sitting in front of it, Laura in a beautiful dress with Carrie watching from the bed, Nellie Oleson in the buggy with Almanzo and Laura, Laura managing Barnum, Almanzo and Laura at dusk before their first kiss, a sewing machine, a kitten under Laura's skirt in church, Pa playing the violin and Laura sitting in the doorway, and Laura in the buggy saying goodbye to her family after her wedding.

My opinion:

Old, but still a very neat book. In good condition. I have it for the drawings. I eventually bought another volume, which looked a bit neater. So I have the book twice.

In het boek staan plaatjes van Garth Williams. De bekende, warme, mooi tekeningen die net echt lijken en fijn zijn om naar te kijken. Er staan meer tekeningen in dan in de Nederlandse uitgave bekend zijn. De plaatjes die voorkomen zijn: Pa en Laura in de slee op de prairie, veel huisjes en bloemen, een lamp, Laura voor de klas kinderen, opkomende zon, de slee met paarden, Laura die het mes uit de vlecht trekt, Mevrouw Brewster met een mes in haar hand, Laura die lagen over elkaar aan trekt, sleerijden over de hoofdstraat, de brandende palissade uit het verhaal van oom Tom, Mary die haar kist aan het uitpakken is, Laura en nicht Alice die popcorn bakken, Almanzo en Laura in de buggy bij het meer, Laura krijgt een brief op het postkantoor, Het schoolgebouw, Laura in de buggy met op hol geslagen Barnum, Laura opent de deur voor Almanzo op kerstavond, een naaimachine, Laura aan het naaien, Almanzo en Laura worden getrouwd door Dominee Brown.

Het boek is onderverdeeld in 13 hoofdstukken, voor ieder kleine-huis-boek een hoofdstuk en dan nog de jaren op Rocky Ridge, Laura en het kleine huis door de jaren heen, de kleine huis musea heden ten dagen en Laura Ingalls Wilder.
In het eerste hoofdstuk over Laura wordt het algemene verhaal helemaal vertelt. De reizen met de huifkar, waar ze woonde, waarom ze de boeken is gaan schrijven. Ieder verder hoofdstuk is hetzelfde opgebouwd en bestaat uit drie delen. Het eerste deel gaat over het boek en wat daarin gebeurd. Het volgende deel pikt een stuk uit het boek van het dagelijkse leven van pioniers wat wordt uitgelegd. Zo gaat het bij het kleine huis in het grote bos over de winkel in de stad. Daarna wordt een "handvaardigheid" uit het boek uitgelegd en beschreven zodat je het kunt namaken. Bij het eerste hoofdstuk is dat een appel met kruidnagel.
Wat bijzonder is, is dat bij alle hoofdstukken een plattegrond is getekend van het huis waarin Laura toen woonde en de indeling van de meubels. Er zijn ook veel plattegronden van bijvoorbeeld de omgeving van het kleine huis op de prairie. Hier wordt in deel twee vertelt over huifkarren en wat allemaal mee moest. verder wordt het spel "verstop de vingerhoed" uitgelegd en een patchwork-kussen wordt uitgelegd. Vaak is er ook nog een stuk over iets wat je kunt koken en bakken, zoals sneeuwsuikergoed of hartvormige koeken. In De grote hoeve wordt vertelt over de jaarmarkt en zelfgemaakte boter en handgetrokken toffee. Het kleine huis aan de rivier heeft zelfs twee plattegronden. Een van het huis in de rivieroever en een van het nieuwe, houten huis. Er wordt ingegaan op al het huishoudelijke werk dat gedaan moest worden. Als handwerk wordt geleerd om papieren stroken te knippen en verder om limonade te maken. Bij het kleine huis aan het zilvermeer is er een mooie plattegrond van het kamp aan de oevers van het Zilvermeer en een plattegrond van het landmetershuis en het halve huis op de claim. Verder wordt vertelt over het bouwen van de spoorweg. Er wordt uitgelegd hoe je gedroogde appel maakt en de danspassen van de polka en de wals worden beschreven. Bij de lange winter is de plattegrond natuurlijk van het huis in de stad. Er wordt ingegaan op hoe de post was geregeld in de tijd van de pioniers. Er wordt beschreven hoe je het beste pannenkoeken kunt bakken. Bij de kleine stad op de prairie staat er een mooie 3D plattegrond van De Smet en wordt er meer vertelt over kleine pioniersstadjes. Er wordt ingegaan op naamkaartjes en hoe je zelf een poëziealbum kunt maken. In een huis voor Laura is een plattegrond te zien van de Brewster-school en het huis van de familie Ingalls op de claim. Extra informatie is er over de scholen op de prairie. Handwerk is van het kralenwerk van Mary en het maken van popcornballen. In de vier prairiejaren is de plattegrond van het huis dat Almanzo bouwde voor Laura. Er wordt vertelt over medicijnen in de tijd van Laura en er wordt uitgelegd hoe je ijs maakt als het flink heeft gehageld. In de jaren op Rocky Ridge is er eerst een plattegrond van de blokhut en later van het grote huis. Er staat een recept voor Laura's kruidkoek. Op het eind van het boek staat de Amerikaanse geschiedenis in de tijd van Laura's boeken. Verder is er ook een stamboom (met foto's) verwerkt in het boek.

Tekeningen:

Er staan dus heel veel getekende plattegronden in het boek, vooral van de huizen en ook van de omgeving zoals bij De Smet en ook Rocky Ridge enzo. Er staan veel mooie tekeningen in het boek die verwijzen naar waar het stuk over gaat. Bij de handvaardigheden staan ook veel tekeningen bij de uitleg.

Er staan ook foto’s in het boek, de meeste foto’s zijn bekend, zoals van Laura in 1918, de trouwfoto van Pa en Ma, de zusjes Ingalls, de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura en foto’s van Rose.

Elk hoofdstuk begint met een paginagrote, ingekleurde Garth William tekening van de voorkant van het boek.

Eigen mening:

Heel mooi boek! Duidelijke tekeningen en het is mooi om alle plattegronden te zien en te bekijken. Mooie teksten met duidelijke uitleg. Ook de handvaardigheden zijn leuk om te lezen. Beslist de moeite waard, dit boek.

Een heel mooi boek en een echte aanwinst voor de verzamelaars.

Summary:

The book is divided into 13 chapters, one for each little house book, and then the years at Rocky Ridge, Laura and the little house through the years, the little house museums today, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The first chapter about Laura tells the general story in full: her travels with the covered wagon, where she lived, and why she started writing the books. Each subsequent chapter is structured the same way and consists of three parts. The first part is about the book and what happens in it. The next part picks a passage from the book about the daily life of pioneers and explains it. For example, the Little House in the Big Woods section is about the store in town. Then, a "craft" from the book is explained and described so you can recreate it. In the first chapter, it's an apple with cloves.

What's special is that each chapter includes a map of the house where Laura lived at the time, along with the arrangement of the furniture. There are also many maps of, for example, the area surrounding the Little House on the Prairie. Part two tells about covered wagons and everything that had to be taken along. The game "hide the thimble" is also explained, as is the patchwork pillow. There's often a section about cooking and baking, such as snow candy or heart-shaped cookies. Farmer Boy tells about the annual fair and homemade butter and hand-pulled toffee. On the Bank of Plum Creek even has two floor plans: one of the house on the riverbank and one of the new, wooden house. It details all the housework that had to be done. As a craft, participants learn how to cut paper strips and how to make lemonade. By the Shore of Silver Lake includes a beautiful plan of the camp on the shores of Silver Lake, as well as a plan of the surveyor's house and the half-house on the claim. The building of the railroad is also discussed. It explains how to make dried apples and describes the dance steps for the polka and waltz. The floor plan for the Long Winter is, of course, of the house in town. The book discusses mail arrangements in pioneer times and describes the best way to bake pancakes. The "Little Town on the Prairie" section features a beautiful 3D map by De Smet and provides more information about small pioneer towns. It discusses business cards and how to make your own poetry album. "These Happy Golden Years" includes a map of the Brewster School and the Ingalls family home on the claim. Additional information is provided about schools on the prairie. Crafts include Mary's beadwork and popcorn ball making. "The First Four Years" includes a map of the house Almanzo built for Laura. Medicines in Laura's time are discussed, and how to make ice cream after a heavy hailstorm is explained. The "Years on Rocky Ridge" section includes a map of the log cabin and later of the main house. A recipe for Laura's gingerbread is included. The book concludes with an overview of American history at the time of Laura's writing. The book also includes a family tree (with photos).

Drawings:

The book contains many drawn maps, especially of the houses and also of the surrounding area, such as De Smet and Rocky Ridge. There are many beautiful drawings that relate to the subject of the piece. The crafts section also includes many drawings accompanying the explanations.

The book also contains photographs, most of which are familiar, such as those of Laura in 1918, Ma and Pa's wedding photo, the Ingalls sisters, Almanzo and Laura's wedding photo, and photos of Rose.

Each chapter begins with a full-page, colored Garth William drawing of the cover of the book.

My opinion:

A very beautiful book! Clear drawings, and it's wonderful to see and examine all the maps. Beautiful text with clear explanations. The crafts sections are also enjoyable to read. This book is definitely worth it.

Een prachtig boek over de natuur in de boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder. Heel veel tekst, wel heel feitelijk, maar goed geschreven. Veel uitgezochte informatie, ook uit de tijd van Laura. Het boek is onverdeeld in 2 subdelen, die weer zijn onderverdeeld in kleine hoofdstukken. Het eerste deel is “leven op het land” en gaat meer over de verschillende plaatsen waar Laura heeft gewoon met haar ouders, maar ook over Malone.

Het tweede deel gaat over de “Wilder tuinen”, dus in Mansfield. Verder staan er nog adviezen in over planten en boeken die je nog meer kunt lezen. Tot in detail wordt er vertelt over wat er groeit en bloeit op de verschillende plaatsen en vooral in de tijd van Laura.

Tekeningen:

De foto’s zijn allemaal even scherp en mooi. Ook de plaatjes zijn mooi overgenomen. Erg waardevol allemaal. Alle planten worden getoond hoe ze er uit zien om het nog leesbaarder te maken. Het boek begint met een plaatje van Laura die in haar tuin bonen aan het plukken is. Er is een kaartje met de plaatsen waar Laura heeft gewoond. Er staan tekeningen in van Helen Sewell, zowel met als zonder kleur en tekeningen van Garth Williams, in kleur. Verder een grote kaart van Wisconsin met daarop aangegeven waar de Ingalls Farm was, maar ook van New York met de boerderij in Malone. Tekeningen en schilderijen van die tijd. Plaatjes van verschillende grassen en bloemen. Een foto van een hooi-maaier op Rocky Ridge Farm. Foto’s van Malone de stad en van Malone de boerderij. In het hele boek staan ontzettend veel foto’s van planten, bloemen, zaden. Ook staan er veel algemene foto’s in het boek van iets wat te maken heeft met het verhaal of de tijd. Verder de foto’s van de 3 Ingalls girls. Ook staan er veel foto’s van dieren in het boek. Ook zijn er verschillende advertenties uit de tijd van Laura Ingalls Wilder in het boek opgenomen. En de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura. Ook van Mansfield staan er algemene foto’s in het boek, maar ook bijvoorbeeld Almanzo aan het hooien en Laura voor het huis in de stad, Laura en Rose in het ravijn en Almanzo voor de appelboom. En verschillende foto’s van het huis en de keuken in Mansfield.

Eigen mening:

Erg mooi boek met goede teksten, vernieuwend en prachtige foto’s en plaatjes. Over een onbelicht onderdeel van de kleine huis boeken. Echt een aanwinst. Niet perse om heel vaak te lezen, maar zeker om te hebben. Leesbaar boek, vol informatie. Vanaf een kant belicht die nog nooit belicht is. Er wordt veel informatie gedeeld. Ook hele mooie foto’s en plaatjes.

Summary:

A beautiful book about nature in the works of Laura Ingalls Wilder. A lot of text, very factual, but well-written. A lot of researched information, including information from Laura's time. The book is divided into two subsections, which are further subdivided into smaller chapters. The first section is "Life on the Land" and focuses on the various places where Laura lived with her parents, as well as Malone.

The second section is about the "Wilder Gardens," located in Mansfield. It also includes plant recommendations and other books you can read. The book describes in detail what grows and blooms in the various locations, especially during Laura's time.

Illustrations:

The photos are all sharp and beautiful. The illustrations are also beautifully reproduced. All very valuable. All plants are shown in their original form, making it even more readable. The book begins with a picture of Laura picking peas in her garden. There is a map showing the places where Laura lived. It contains drawings by Helen Sewell, both in color and in black-white, and drawings by Garth Williams, in color. It also includes a large map of Wisconsin showing the location of the Ingalls Farm, as well as a map of New York showing the farm in Malone. Drawings and paintings from that period are also included. Pictures of various grasses and flowers are also included. A photo of a hay mower at Rocky Ridge Farm is also included. Photos of Malone, the town, and the farm. Throughout the book, there are countless photos of plants, flowers, and seeds. There are also many general photos of things related to the story or the period, including photos of the three Ingalls girls. There are also many photos of animals. The book also includes various advertisements from Laura Ingalls Wilder's time, as well as Almanzo and Laura's wedding photo. There are also general photos of Mansfield, for example, Almanzo mowing hay and Laura in front of the house in town, Laura and Rose in the ravine, and Almanzo in front of the apple tree. And several photos of the house and kitchen in Mansfield.

My opinion:

A very nice book with good, innovative text and beautiful photos and illustrations. It's about an unlit section of the small house books. A real asset. Not necessarily one to read often, but definitely one to have. A readable book, packed with information. It's illuminated from an angle that's never been seen before. A wealth of information is shared. Also very beautiful photos and illustrations.

Samenvatting:

Een boek zonder plaatjes, voor volwassenen. Een recent boek uit 2011.

De schrijfster is schrijver en editor van kinderboeken. In het begin lijkt het boek een beetje saai, tot ze echt toe komt aan Laura. Ze schrijft over haar “Laura World” waarin ze als kind al verzeilt was. Ze houdt vooral van de boeken en later deels van de TV-serie. Langzaam groeit haar interesse ook als volwassene en uiteindelijk bezoekt ze alle musea van Laura. Ze beschrijft wat ze denkt en voelt en ziet. Hoe ze dingen beleeft en hoe ze het plaatst. Ze vertelt van haar ervaringen met het karnen van boter en de gerechten die ze uit probeert naar aanleiding van het kookboek. Ze gaat ook een weekend op “cursus” om te proberen te leven zoals tijdens de Ingalls-tijd, dat valt erg tegen als ze samen blijkt te komen met mensen met heel andere denkbeelden. Veel doet ze samen met haar vriend Chris, die zelfs de boeken gaat lezen om er meer van te begrijpen. In haar boek koppelt Wendy ook veel terug uit andere biografieën, ze vergelijkt ook Rose en Laura en waarom de verhalen van Rose zo anders zijn (Rose was ongelukkig in haar jeugd en ontevreden, Laura was veel meer tevreden met haar jeugd). Mooi vond ik ook dat ze heel duidelijk de musea beschrijft en hoe ze het daar ervaart. De rondleidingen en wat er te zien is en hoe ze wordt benaderd. Ze gaat ook naar peagants en later zelfs naar een musical. Uiteindelijk ontdekt ze dat haar zoektocht toch niet helemaal brengt wat ze wil, dat haar “Laura world” toch niet echt lijkt te bestaan. Het boek bestaat uit 12 hoofdstukken met ieder een titel.

Tekeningen:

Een boek zonder veel plaatjes, voor volwassenen.
Er staan her en der wat kleine plaatjes in het boek. Algemene tekeningetjes, zoals van een huifkar, blokhut, taart, koffiemolen, karnton.

Eigen mening:

Een vrij dik boek, waar zeker in het begin wat moeilijk doorheen te komen is. Ver van de echte Laura-boeken af. Wel geinig, maar niet om meer dan 1 keer te lezen.

She especially loves the books and later, partly, the TV series. Gradually, her interest grows as an adult, and she eventually visits all of Laura's museums. She describes what she thinks, feels, and sees. How she experiences things and how she puts them into perspective. She recounts her experiences churning butter and the dishes she tries based on the cookbook. She also goes on a weekend "course" to try to live like she did during the Ingalls era, which proves very disappointing when she finds herself with people with very different perspectives. She spends a lot of time with her boyfriend, Chris, who even starts reading the books to understand them better. In her book, Wendy draws heavily on other biographies, comparing Rose and Laura and explaining why Rose's stories are so different (Rose was unhappy and dissatisfied in her childhood, while Laura was much more content with hers). I also appreciated how clearly she describes the museums and her experiences there: the tours, what there is to see, and how she is approached. She also visits peagants and later even a musical. Ultimately, she discovers that her search isn't quite what she wants, that her "Laura world" doesn't seem to truly exist. The book consists of 12 chapters, each with a title.

Illustrations:

A book without many illustrations, for adults.

There are a few small illustrations scattered throughout the book. General illustrations, such as those of a covered wagon, a log cabin, a cake, a coffee grinder, and a churn.

My own opinion:

A fairly thick book, which is a bit difficult to get through, especially at the beginning. It's a far cry from the typical Laura books. Fun, but not worth reading more than once.

Het boekje begint met een stukje over Dorothy Belle Smith en haar connectie met de familie Wilder. Daarna volgt een korte introductie over dat het boekje koppelt aan de familie uit “de Grote Hoeve”. Dan volgt het begin van Abel en Hannah Paine Wilder, de voorouders. Het volgende stukje gaat over James en Angeline Wilder. De hele familie van James Wilder wordt zo’n beetje besproken, dus ook de broers en zussen. Dit is een uitgebreid hoofdstuk, ook over Malone’s activiteiten. Ook staat er een recept voor gefrituurde appels in het boekje. Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over de verhuizing naar het Westen. De briefwisseling tussen de kinderen wordt besproken, het volgende hoofdstuk gaat dan over de definitieve verhuizing naar Spring Valley. Hierin gaat het ook over dat Almanzo en Laura en Rose op de boerderij komen wonen. Uiteindelijk maakt het boekje een grote sprong naar hoe het Royal, Eliza Jane, Laura Wilder en Perley en Alice is vergaan in hun latere leven. Het laatste hoofdstuk gaat over de connectie van Laura en Almanzo en Malone.

Er staan eigenlijk alleen foto’s in het boekje. De meeste foto’s zijn de bekende foto’s van de familie. Enkele foto’s ook van de oude schuur uit 1971 en overzichtsfoto’s van Malone. Er staat een foto in van Dorothy Smith. De volgende foto is van de boerderij in Malone in de sneeuw, terwijl deze nog niet gerenoveerd is. De volgende foto is de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura. Er is een foto van een vroeg Malone uit 1844. Er is een kaart uit 1858 met daarop aangegeven waar de boerderij van Wilder lag. Er staan foto’s in het boekje van het gezin van de broer van James: Royal Wilder, maar ook van Andrew en Sarah Wilder Day. The book begins with a section about Dorothy Belle Smith and her connection to the Wilder family. This is followed by a short introduction that links the book to the family from "Farmer Boy”. Then follows the introduction to Abel and Hannah Paine Wilder, the ancestors. The next section is about James and Angeline Wilder. The entire James Wilder family is discussed, including the siblings. This is a comprehensive chapter, also covering Malone's activities. There's also a recipe for fried apples. The next chapter covers the move to the West. The correspondence between the children and their father is discussed, and the following chapter covers the final move to Spring Valley. This chapter also discusses Almanzo, Laura, and Rose coming to live on the farm. Finally, the booklet takes a big leap to how Royal, Eliza Jane, Laura Wilder, Perley, and Alice fared in their later lives. The final chapter discusses the connection between Laura, Almanzo, and Malone.

The booklet actually only contains photographs. Most of the photos are familiar family photos. There are also some photos of the old barn from 1971 and overview photos of Malone. There's a photo of Dorothy Smith. The next photo is of the Malone farmhouse in the snow, while it hasn't been renovated yet. The next photo is Almanzo and Laura's wedding photo. There's a photo of an early Malone from 1844. There's a map from 1858 showing the location of the Wilder farmhouse. The booklet contains photos of the family of James's brother, Royal Wilder, as well as of Andrew and Sarah Wilder Day. There's a drawing by Aunt Sarah Wilder Day and a photo of the Franklin Academy, Floral Hall, and Memorial Park around 1870. There's a blurry photo of the 1875 census in the booklet. There's a photo from 1885 of James and Angeline Wilder and Andrew and Sarah Wilder Day. There's also a photo from June 1896 of James and Angeline Wilder. There's a photo of the sign at the house in Malone and of the group that made it possible. All photos are in black and white.

My opinion:

A small book, but still provides additional information about the Wilder family. Interesting reading nonetheless.

Het is niet perse een leesboek, maar een opsomming van feiten. Heel veel jaartallen, heel veel data, heel veel namen. Je moet af en toe wel teruglezen om het duidelijk te krijgen. Er staan veel geboortes en overlijdens in het boek, maar ook stukken met data uit het dagboek van Eliza Jane en andere data van dingen die gebeurd zijn in Spring Valley en Malone. Het is heel veel informatie, ook van de neven en nichten en reizen ed.

Tekeningen:

Er staan bekende foto’s in van de familie Wilder. Familiefoto, het krantenbericht in de krant van het huwelijk van Almanzo en Laura. Foto’s van het huis in Malone, de verlovingsring, graven, Morgan horses. Foto’s zijn in zwart-wit en niet heel scherp. De kinderfoto van Rose. Een foto van het huis in Mansfield. De foto’s zijn een beetje gegroepeerd achter in het boek.

Eigen mening:

Op zich reuze interessant van opzet, dit boekje, chronologisch. Jammer dat er fouten in staan, want het kan dus veel beter. Maar ook weer leuk dat er extra data van dagelijkse dingen zijn toegevoegd, zoals de County Fair in Malone, een storm in Spring Valley ed. En het gaat echt over de familie Wilder, niet zozeer over Almanzo en Laura.

Helaas klopt niet alles en is de informatie lang niet altijd volledig. Ik vond meer op Find a Grave dan in het boekje staat en sommige dingen staan niet goed (er staat 2x in dat James, Angeline en Laura Wilder op bezoek gaan in Mansfield en het huis kopen voor 500 dollar, 1x in 1898 en daarna in 1899 weer, maar daarvoor staat er al in dat James Wilder is overleden, dus het kan niet eens in 1899 zijn gebeurd. Het is dus niet nauwkeurig nagekeken. Dat is wel jammer)

Summary:

It's not necessarily a book to read, but a list of facts. Lots of dates, lots of names. You have to go back and read it every now and then to get a clear picture. There are many births and deaths in the book, but also passages with dates from Eliza Jane's diary and other dates of things that happened in Spring Valley and Malone. It's a wealth of information, including details about the nieces and nephews, travels, and so on.

Drawings:

It includes familiar photos of the Wilder family. A family photo, the newspaper article about Almanzo and Laura's wedding, photos of the house in Malone, the engagement ring, graves, Morgan horses. The photos are in black and white and not very sharp. There's a childhood photo of Rose, and a photo of the house in Mansfield. The photos are grouped together at the back of the book.

Opinion:

This book is actually quite interesting, chronologically. It's a shame there are errors, because it could be so much better. But it's also nice that extra data has been added about everyday events, like the County Fair in Malone, a storm in Spring Valley, and so on. And it's really about the Wilder family, not so much about Almanzo and Laura.

Unfortunately, not everything is correct, and the information is far from complete. I found more on Find a Grave than the booklet shows, and some things are incorrect (it mentions twice that James, Angeline, and Laura Wilder visit Mansfield and buy the house for $500: once in 1898 and then again in 1899, but before that, it already mentions that James Wilder died, so it couldn't even have happened in 1899. So it hasn't been thoroughly checked. That's unfortunate).

Het is een dun boekje met een kleine lettertype. Het gaat over het jaar dat Laura en Almanzo doorbrachten in Westville, Florida bij neef Peter die daar getrouwd was. Laura en Almanzo waren op zoek naar een omgeving waar het beter zou gaan met de gezondheid van Almanzo. Omdat neef Peter ook bij hen had gewoond in De Smet, besloten ze naar hem te reizen. Het eerst stukje gaat over de start van de zoektocht. De schrijfster vond het vreemd dat er zo weinig bekend was over het jaar dat Laura en Almanzo hadden doorgebracht in Westville, Florida. Ze ging, samen met haar echtgenoot, op zoek in de omgeving naar de naam Ingalls. Ze nam aan dat Peter Ingalls was getrouwd in deze omgeving en er zijn gezin had onderhouden. Na wat speurwerk bij het postkantoor, districtskantoor en in kerkregisters, vonden ze enkele mensen met de naam "Ingalls". Daarna volgt in het boekje wat algemene informatie. Het is uitgezocht dat Peter Ingalls land heeft geclaimd. Hoe Westville was rond 1900 en nu. Ze ontmoeten nog iemand wiens ouders Laura en Almanzo goed hebben gekend in Missouri. Deze vrouw heeft nog een oude brief van Laura aan haar moeder.

Tekeningen:

In het boekje staan een aantal foto's. Van de winkel aan de weg waar peter Ingalls vlakbij woonde, een foto van het nationale archief waarin de namen van het gezin in Florida staan genoemd, een oude vervallen blokhut op het terrein van Peter en ook een foto van het landschap, de kerk en de begraafplaats. En van een boom met Spaans mos.

Eigen mening:

Dun boekje, over een missend stukje in het verhaal van Laura Ingalls, maar het is ook wel weer algemeen omdat er weinig bekend is over de Wilders in Florida.

Summary:

It's a thin book with small font. It's about the year Laura and Almanzo spent in Westville, Florida, with their cousin Peter, who had married there. Laura and Almanzo were looking for a place where Almanzo's health would improve. Because their cousin Peter had also lived with them in De Smet, they decided to travel to him. The first section describes the beginning of their search. The author found it strange that so little was known about the year Laura and Almanzo spent in Westville, Florida. She and her husband began searching the area for the name Ingalls. She assumed Peter Ingalls had married in this area and raised his family there. After some research at the post office, county clerk's office, and church records, they found several people named "Ingalls." They finally located one of these people, and it turned out to be Peter Ingalls' daughter. This "Miss Emma" tells about her father. He worked hard and owned a substantial amount of land. They had several children. Peter married the woman he first saw standing on the shore after arriving in Florida on the sailboat "Edith." He loved his wife, Mary, very much. The Ingalls family was poor, and the children all had to work hard. Consequently, they had little time to go to school. Miss Emma, ​​the youngest of the family, was born in 1905. She had heard little about the year Laura and Almanzo had lived in Westville. She did, however, hear later that Laura wanted to help Peter plant the corn. While planting, she held a large, black umbrella over her head to protect her from the bright sun. Finally, Peter had enough of it and sent her inside. The booklet contains several photos. One of the store on the road near where Peter Ingalls lived, one from the National Archives listing the family's names in Florida, one of an old dilapidated log cabin on Peter's property, and another of the landscape, the church, and the cemetery. And one of a tree with Spanish moss.

My own opinion:

A small booklet, about a missing piece in Laura Ingalls' story, but it's also quite general because little is known about the Wilders family in Florida.
