Samenvatting:

Dit boekje met hoofdstukken gaat weer over Rose. Het is het derde deel in de serie. Het boekje heeft 8 hoofdstukken.
1. Een nieuwe vriendin
Rose is met haar ouders verhuist van South Dakota naar Missouri. Haar ouders hebben daar een boerderij gekocht en proberen er iets van te maken. Ze wonen in een blokhut. Rose is enigst kind en speelt vaak alleen. Soms is dat saai. Ze gaat op onderzoek uit op de boerderij en vind onbekend fruit. Als ze het proeft, trekt haar mond samen. Een meisje staat toe te kijken en zegt dat het dadels zijn. Rose en het meisje Alva maken kennis en Alva leert Rose dingen over het land. Rose is blij dat ze nu een vriendin heeft.
2. de likplaats
De volgende zondag komt Alva naar het huis van Rose en samen gaan ze de bossen in. Alva laat Rose een herten-likplaats zien. Verder proberen ze samen om een konijntje te vangen. Alva leert Rose van alles over het bos en zijn bewoners. Rose is bang dat ze verdwalen, maar Alva lacht haar uit en zegt dat ze de bossen beter kent dan wie ook.
3. De grot
Rose speelt regelmatig op zondag met Alva. Op een keer neemt Alva Rose mee naar een grot in de buurt. Ze gaan de grot in en Alva vertelt dat er soms wilde varkens in de grot wonen. De meisjes schreeuwen eerst voor de echo en om dieren weg te jagen. Dan gaan ze de grot in. Het wordt steeds donkerder en het is spannend. Als ze het water horen klotsen, zijn ze ineens toch bang en rennen ze hard de grot uit. Was het toch een wild varken? Rose vond het erg leuk.
4. Sassafras en karmozijnbes
Op een dag komt Alva langs met een bosje kruiden. Mama Bess weet niet wat ze er mee moet doen en Alva legt uit dat ze er thee van kan maken. Ook vertelt Alva dat ze bessen heeft gevonden. Alva, Rose en Swiney gaan bessen plukken. Swiney loopt over een hek en valt ongelukkig en blijft aan zijn broek hangen. Alva en Rose moeten er om lachen, maar helpen hem met loskomen. Papa vindt het eten 's avonds met de bessen en thee heerlijk.
5. Alva's huis
Rose wordt uitgenodigd om mee naar Alva te gaan. Alva woont op een grote boerderij. Er zijn veel dieren en grote stallen. Rose krijgt lekkere melk van de moeder van Alva. Er zijn katjes en honden en kippen. Rose geniet en wilde wel dat haar ouders ook al zo'n mooie, grote boerderij hadden.
6. Spijbelen
Rose moet naar school, maar vindt er daar niets aan. Op een middag is het ze zo zat dat ze in de pauze besluit om gauw even naar Alva te gaan. Ze spelen samen met de poesjes, ze kijken in de tuin en plukken bessen. Dan zegt Rose dat ze weer naar school moet en rent terug. Wat schrikt ze als blijkt dat de wagen van haar ouders voor de school staat en het hele plein leeg is! Ze blijkt niet maar een uur weg te zijn geweest, maar de hele middag. Ze vertelt hoe vreselijk ze school vind, maar krijgt als straf dat ze binnen moet blijven. Ze mag boeken lenen uit een hogere klas en gaat lekker zitten lezen.
7. Cider maken
Op een dag komt papa thuis met een flinke lading appels. Rose is benieuwd wat ze er mee gaan doen en papa vertelt dat ze de appels gaan persen voor appelsap, bij Alva. Rose is blij om weer naar Alva te gaan. Ze proeft de heerlijke appelsap, luistert naar de verhalen van Alva.
8. Trainrails
Alva weet weer een nieuw spelletjes. Spelen op de spoorrails. Ze luisteren of ze een trein horen komen, ze leggen steentjes op de rails en gaan vlakbij de rails staan als er een trein aan komt en voelen de sterke wind. Het is weer spannend en opwindend samen met Alva.

Tekeningen:

Bij elk hoofdstuk staat een plaatje. lieve plaatjes van twee meisjes samen. Meisjes die samen appelsap drinken en poesjes aaien. Rose die een dadel proeft terwijl Alva op afstand toekijkt. Twee meisjes die vlakbij de trein staan. Een plaatje van Rose die in de klas naar buiten zit te kijken en Swiney die ondersteboven aan het hek hangt. En van een grot en een meisje dat door een bos loopt.

Eigen mening:

Een boekje met hoofdstukken uit de Rose-serie. Leuk om te lezen, tekeningen zijn lief.

Summary:

This book with chapters is about Rose again. It is the third part in the series. The book has 8 chapters.

1. A new friend

Rose has moved with her parents from South Dakota to Missouri. Her parents have bought a farm there and are trying to make something of it. They live in a log cabin. Rose is an only child and often plays alone. Sometimes that is boring. She goes exploring on the farm and finds unknown fruit. When she tastes it, her mouth contracts. A girl is watching and says that they are persimmons. Rose and the girl Alva get to know each other and Alva teaches Rose things about the land. Rose is happy that she now has a friend.

2. The Deer Rub

The following Sunday Alva comes to Rose's house and together they go into the woods. Alva shows Rose a deer licking place. They also try to catch a rabbit together. Alva teaches Rose all about the forest and its inhabitants. Rose is afraid that they will get lost, but Alva laughs at her and says that she knows the woods better than anyone.

3. The cave

Rose often plays with Alva on Sundays. One time Alva takes Rose to a cave nearby. They go into the cave and Alva tells them that sometimes wild pigs live in the cave. The girls first scream for the echo and to scare the animals away. Then they go into the cave. It gets darker and darker and it is exciting. When they hear the water splashing, they are suddenly scared and run out of the cave. Was it a wild pig after all? Rose thought it was great fun.

4. Sassafras and Pokeweed

One day Alva comes by with a bunch of herbs. Mama Bess doesn't know what to do with them and Alva explains that she can make tea from them. Alva also tells them that she has found berries. Alva, Rose and Swiney go picking berries. Swiney walks over a fence and falls unluckily and gets stuck to his pants. Alva and Rose laugh about it, but help him to loosen up. Papa loves the dinner in the evening with the berries and tea.

5. Alva's house

Rose is invited to go to Alva's. Alva lives on a big farm. There are many animals and big stables. Rose gets delicious milk from Alva's mother. There are cats and dogs and chickens. Rose enjoys it and wishes her parents had such a beautiful, big farm too.

6. Sneaking off

Rose has to go to school, but doesn't like it there. One afternoon she is so fed up with it that she decides to go to Alva's during the break. They play with the cats together, they look in the garden and pick berries. Then Rose says she has to go back to school and runs back. How shocked she is when she sees her parents' wagon in front of the school and the whole yard is empty! It turns out she hasn't just been gone for an hour, but the whole afternoon. She tells how much she hates school, but is punished by staying inside. She is allowed to borrow books from a higher class and sits down to read.

7. Pressing cider

One day, papa comes home with a big load of apples. Rose is curious about what they are going to do with them and papa tells them that they are going to press the apples for apple juice, at Alva's. Rose is happy to go to Alva again. She tastes the delicious apple juice, listens to Alva's stories.

8. Train tracks

Alva knows a new game again. Playing on the train tracks. They listen to hear if they hear a train coming, they put stones on the tracks and stand close to the tracks when a train comes and feel the strong wind. It is exciting and thrilling together with Alva again.

Drawings:

Each chapter has a picture. Sweet pictures of two girls together. Girls drinking apple juice together and petting kitties. Rose tasting a persimmon while Alva watches from a distance. Two girls standing close to the train. A picture of Rose looking outside in the classroom and Swiney hanging upside down from the fence. And of a cave and a girl walking through a forest.

Own opinion:

A book with chapters from the Rose series. Nice to read, drawings are sweet.

Samenvatting:

Dit boek gaat geheel over het kleine huis in het grote bos. Elk hoofdstuk wordt benoemd en behandeld. Er wordt net wat dieper in gegaan op dingen die in het hoofdstuk gebeuren. Er volgt uitleg over, hoe het ging in die tijd of hoe je het moet zien.

Het eerste hoofdstuk is over het grote vuur dat woede in de grote bossen. Dat Laura dit heeft gezien in de verte. Er wordt ingegaan op een grote brand in Preshtigo in Wisconsin die een heel stadje in de as legde en waarbij het vuur werd aangewakkerd door de wind. Ook wordt ingegaan op de manier van beschrijven van Laura.

Hoofdstuk 2 is over het samenwerken met Ma, die voor elke dag van de week haar eigen werk had. Er wordt achterhaald waar het rijmpje vandaan komt en hoe het door de jaren een beetje is veranderd, maar hoe makkelijk het voor vrouwen was om dit ritme aan te houden. Ook wordt benoemd hoe hard er eigenlijk gewerkt werd. Ook wordt beschreven dat Ma tijdens het werk Mary en Laura veel leerde. Ook wordt er een onbekend artikel van Laura aangehaald over Ma. Dat was interessant en het artikel dat Laura schreef over het overlijden van Ma. Door het hele boekje heen worden meerdere overwegingen mee gegeven en ook wordt vaak benoemd hoeveel liefde en zorg er was in het gezin van Ingalls.

Het derde hoofdstuk gaat over het vertellen van verhalen bij het vuur in de avond. Dat er voor de gezinnen destijds weinig anders was in het donkere licht, maar dat het rust en verbondenheid gaf als er verhalen werden verteld. Alle verschillende verhalen die Pa vertelt worden benoemd. Tevens wordt de kracht van een goed verhaal uitgelegd. Er worden hier en daar beelden aan de bestaande verhalen toegevoegd, die het wel mooi maken.

Dan komt het hoofdstuk over de iGifts. Dat destijds met liefde werd gemaakt, zoals het plankje dat Pa uitsneed voor Ma en de pop die Ma maakte voor Laura. Dat er destijds nooit grote cadeaus waren, maar dat de zelfgemaakte cadeaus, waar veel tijd aan was besteedt, eigenlijk veel waardevoller waren en dat dat in de huidige tijd ook een gemis is.

Dan wordt er ingegaan op het zaterdagse bad. Hoe dat is ontstaan, hoe dat ging, hoeveel werk dat dat was elke week. Ook worden er her en der artikelen aangehaald van Laura en Rose of anderen om uitleg te geven.

Uiteindelijk komt er natuurlijk een hoofdstuk over Pa. Hoe onwaarschijnlijk veel werk hij had, hoe zwaar dat werk was. Hoe hij daar altijd maar mee door ging. En dat hij heel veel kennis had van hoe dingen moesten. Dat Pa iedere dag opnieuw verantwoordelijk was voor het welzijn van het gezin. In het volgende hoofdstuk wordt ook aangehaald dat de mensen allemaal destijds zoveel wisten. Over hoe je emmers maakt (grootvader), hoe je allerlei huishoudelijk klussen doet (Ma en grootmoeder). Het vangen van dieren en behandelen en eetbaar maken. Er wordt gedaan dat destijds mensen niet zo intelligent waren, maar dat mensen heel veel wisten. Tegenwoordig zijn mensen gespecialiseerd in iets, maar dat was toen dus niet.

Dan gaat het over de “dance at grandpa’s”. Hoe belangrijk dansen destijds was voor mensen die altijd aan het werk waren. Welke dansen er werden gedaan, dat Pa dan wel muziek maakte, maar Ma wel degelijk met iedereen danste en plezier had. Dat Ma haar speciale jurk aan deed en dat in de jurk waarschijnlijk een korset zat ingenaaid. Dat George Washington ook hield van dansen en dat dansen echt een ontlading was voor de mensen.

Dat komt een hoofdstuk over het bezoek aan de stad. Dat dit veel tijd en voorbereiding koste omdat de route lang was (zo’n twee uur), maar dat het ook heel bijzonder was voor het geïsoleerde gezin om naar de stad te gaan. Dan volgt een hoofdstuk over bezoekers, die met name in de zomer soms zomaar kwamen. Zoals tante Lottie, maar ook de ooms of grootvader kwamen soms langs. Ondanks al het werk dat er was, werd echt genoten van het bezoek en daar tijd voor gemaakt. Het was de gewoonte dat iemand bleef eten en dat er nieuws werd uitgewisseld. Zo’n bezoek was heel belangrijk, maar kwam niet vaak voor omdat iedereen druk was.

Dan komt hoofdstuk 11 over neef Charley die toch wel heel onhandelbaar is, maar dat dat waarschijnlijk toch een gevolg is van de opvoeding. En dat dit in het gezin van Charles Ingalls echt anders ging, waar Mary en Laura van heel jong gewend waren aan het doen van karweitjes en al heel jong leerden delen en gehoorzamen. Maar dat dit toch vooral voortkwam uit liefde. Dat wat Charley deed voor die tijd ook echt niet kon.

Vervolgens wordt het werk van het dorsen besproken en hoeveel waarde de machine had die Pa liet komen, dat dat hem geld opleverde en heel veel tijd. Hoe dorsen eigenlijk werd gedaan en hoe zwaar dat werk was.

Als laatste hoofdstuk wordt benadrukt hoe liefdevol de familie Ingalls onderling was en hoe Pa en Ma een band tussen de meisjes en hun kinderen schiep in de manier waarop ze werkten en opvoeden.

In de tekst staan dingen cursief gedrukt, wat “aangehaalde” informatie is. Het boek heeft 13 hoofdstukken.

Tekeningen:

Aan het begin van elk hoofdstuk staan plaatjes, zeer gevarieerd. Het 1^e plaatje is van een schilderij van Claude Monet. Vervolgens een tekening van een meisje dat haar moeder helpt bij het wassen in een tobbe. Dan een tekening van een vuur in de haard in een blokhut. Vervolgens een tekening van een vrouw die aan het naaien is. Dan van een moeder die haar kind in bad gaat doen, een tekening van een paar laarzen en een tekening van een emmer. Dan een tekening van een dansend paar. En van de achterkant van twee paarden die gespannen zijn voor een wagen. Vervolgens de voorkant van Codey’s Lady’s Book en een waterfles. Dan twee mannen die staan te dorsen en, als laatste, een verzameling boeken. Bij elk plaatje staat wel een onderschrift. De plaatjes horen bij het hoofdstuk.

Eigen mening:

Dit boek in 2021 nieuw gekocht bij Amazon. Ik wilde boeken bestellen en deze had ik nog niet. Omdat ik al meer boeken heb gelezen van Dan L. White, wilde ik het wel hebben. Het was zeker een interessant boekje! Hoewel nog wel knip-en-plak-werk was het niet “alleen maar” knip-en-plak. Er zaten verschillende dingen in om goed te overdenken. Ik vond vooral die “igift” en goede vinding: dat is een “gift met liefde”

Summary:

This book is all about the little house in the big woods. Each chapter is named and discussed. Things that happen in the chapter are discussed in more depth. There is an explanation of how things were at that time or how you should see it.

The first chapter is about the big fire that raged in the big woods. That Laura saw this in the distance. It discusses a big fire in Preshtigo in Wisconsin that destroyed an entire town and where the fire was fanned by the wind. It also discusses Laura's way of describing.

Chapter 2 is about working with Ma, who had her own work for every day of the week. It finds out where the rhyme comes from and how it has changed a bit over the years, but how easy it was for women to keep this rhythm. It also mentions how hard they actually worked. It also describes that Ma taught Mary and Laura a lot during the work. An unknown article by Laura about Ma is also quoted. That was interesting and the article Laura wrote about Ma's passing. Throughout the book, several considerations are given and it is often mentioned how much love and care there was in the Ingalls family.

The third chapter is about telling stories by the fire in the evening. That there was little else for the families at that time in the dark light, but that it gave peace and connection when stories were told. All the different stories that Pa tells are mentioned. The power of a good story is also explained. Images are added here and there to the existing stories, which make it beautiful.

Then comes the chapter about the iGifts. That were made with love at that time, such as the shelf that Pa cut out for Ma and the doll that Ma made for Laura. That there were never big gifts at that time, but that the homemade gifts, which had taken a lot of time, were actually much more valuable and that that is also a loss in the present day.

Then the Saturday bath is discussed. How that came about, how that went, how much work that was every week. Also, articles by Laura and Rose or others are quoted here and there to provide explanations.

Finally, of course, there is a chapter about Pa. How incredibly much work he had, how hard that work was. How he always continued with it. And that he had a lot of knowledge about how things should be done. That Pa was responsible for the well-being of the family every day. The next chapter also mentions that people knew so much back then. About how to make buckets (grandfather), how to do all kinds of household chores (Ma and grandmother). Catching animals and treating them and making them edible. It is said that people back then were not that intelligent, but that people knew a lot. Nowadays people specialize in something, but that was not the case back then.

Then it is about the “dance at grandpa’s”. How important dancing was back then for people who were always working. What dances were done, that Pa made music, but Ma really danced with everyone and had fun. That Ma wore her special dress and that a corset was probably sewn into the dress. That George Washington also loved to dance and that dancing was a real release for the people.

That comes a chapter about the visit to the city. That this took a lot of time and preparation because the route was long (about two hours), but that it was also very special for the isolated family to go to town. Then follows a chapter about visitors, who sometimes just came, especially in the summer. Like aunt Lottie, but also the uncles or grandfather sometimes came by. Despite all the work that was there, the visit was really enjoyed and time was made for it. It was customary for someone to stay for dinner and that news was exchanged. Such a visit was very important, but did not happen often because everyone was busy.

Then comes chapter 11 about cousin Charley who is very unruly, but that this is probably a result of the upbringing. And that this was really different in the family of Charles Ingalls, where Mary and Laura were used to doing chores from a very young age and learned to share and obey at a very young age. But that this mainly came from love. That what Charley did was really not possible before that time.

Then the work of threshing is discussed and how valuable the machine that Pa had come was, that it earned him money and a lot of time. How threshing was actually done and how hard that work was.

The last chapter emphasizes how loving the Ingalls family was to each other and how Pa and Ma created a bond between the girls and their children in the way they worked and raised them.

In the text, things are printed in italics, which is "quoted" information. The book has 13 chapters.

Drawings:

At the begin of each chapter there are pictures, very varied. The first picture is of a painting by Claude Monet. Then a drawing of a girl helping her mother wash in a tub. Then a drawing of a fire in the hearth in a log cabin. Then a drawing of a woman sewing. Then of a mother bathing her child, a drawing of a pair of boots and a drawing of a bucket. Then a drawing of a dancing couple. And of the back of two horses harnessed to a wagon. Then the front of Codey's Lady's Book and a water bottle. Then two men threshing and, finally, a collection of books. Each picture has a caption. The pictures belong to the chapter.

Own opinion:

Bought this book new from Amazon in 2021. I wanted to order books and I didn't have this one yet. Because I have already read more books by Dan L. White, I wanted to have it. It was certainly an interesting book! Although it was still cut and paste work, it wasn't "just" cut and paste. There were several things to think about. I especially liked that "igift" and a good invention: that is a "gift with love"

Samenvatting:

Het boek behandeld verschillende hoofdstukken uit het Kleine huis op de prairie. Er wordt wat dieper in gegaan op de voorstelling en er wordt geprobeerd om de gedachten van Pa en Ma te volgen.

Allereerst wordt behandeld dat het gezin Ingalls vertrekt uit Wisconsin. Over het achterlaten van de familie en vrienden. Dat dat vooral moeilijk was voor Ma. Er volgt een hoofdstuk over het oversteken van rivieren, in die tijd meestal zonder brug, en dat dat wel degelijk gevaar met zich mee bracht, omdat rivieren plotseling konden stijgen met alle risico’s van dien. Dat Pa dit risico kende en dus ook echt moest overwegen of een rivier oversteken veilig was. Er wordt in gegaan op het bouwen van het huis en hoeveel werk dat dit was en betrekkelijk veilig. Ook wordt vaker op Ma in gegaan en hoe zij haar best deed in de ruwe omgeving toch vrouwelijk en netjes te zijn. Hoe ze de blokhut gezellig probeert te maken en hoe ze de meisjes manieren bij brengt. Het gaat over wolven en de grote wolven op de prairie, die wel echt gevaarlijk waren. Vaak worden er in het boek ook andere pioniers aangehaald die er over hebben geschreven. Dan wordt ingegaan op de uitgebreide beschrijving van Laura van de bouw van twee deuren zonder spijkers. En het lenen van spijkers van mr Edwards en dat Pa en Ma liever geen schulden hadden tot anderen. Dan gaat het over de bouw van een schoorsteen, wat enorm zwaar werk was met het sjouwen van stenen. Dat Pa zich er makkelijk vanaf maakte door de bovenkant van takken en klei te maken, maar daardoor ook een gevaarlijke situatie veroorzaakte. Het gaat een hoofdstuk over het graven van de put en dat daardoor wel degelijk doden vielen in de wijde omgeving van Kansas en dat een put graven risicovol was. Het gaat over de koe en kalf die Pa kreeg en hoe belangrijk dat was voor de boerderij en het vervoeren van de kuddes over de prairie. Een hoofdstuk gaat over de bessen in het lage land bij de rivier en de kraaltjes die de meisjes vonden in het indianenkamp. Uiteindelijk gaat het natuurlijk ook over de malaria die het hele gezin tegelijk had en de hulp die ze kregen van de zwarte dokter Tann en de buurvrouw mrs. Scott. Het gaat over koorts en rillingen. Het gaat over Pa die weg is en Ma alleen achter laat met maar erg weinig. Ma, die bang is van indianen, en er toch mee moet dealen. Die altijd opgewekt is, maar ook angst gekend moet hebben. Die met het pistool in de schoot, zoette slaapliedjes zingt voor haar kinderen. Het gaat natuurlijk over de indianen en de jamboree, over de Osage en het land dat hen werd toebedeelt en waar Pa in was gaan wonen. Het gaat over de indianen zelf en hun gewoontes en de sterke geur van een stinkdierenhuid. Over de indianen die vonden dat alles van iedereen was en geen eigen bezit kenden. Het gaat uiteindelijk ook over het vertrek van de indianen en dat Laura haar papoose ziet. Natuurlijk ontbreekt een hoofdstuk over kerstmis niet, waarbij de meisjes zo blij waren met hun kadootjes. Het gaat over prairie-branden en hoe gevaarlijk dat dan weer was. Het boek bevat veel (bedachte) informatie, niet echt feitelijk, wel vanuit andere ervaringen.

Tekeningen:

Er staan een aantal tekeningen in het boek doorheen het verhaal die iets met dat hoofdstuk te maken hebben. Een koe die gemolken wordt, de grafsteen van Dr. Tann, een stinkdier en wolven. Geen heel bijzondere plaatjes. Er staat een plaatje in van een grenspaaltje en een plaatje van de bladmuziek van Blue Juniata. En een plaatje van een blokhut.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 bij Amazon tegelijk met een aantal anderen. Ik had al meer boeken van Dan L. White en wilde dit wel lezen.

Net als alle andere boeken is het boek zeker interessant en het leest lekker. Maar soms is het thema ver gezocht en soms is de bedoeling goed, maar de uitwerking matig. Dan is het aangesneden onderwerp goed, maar de uitwerking uiteindelijk ver gezocht. Maar er zitten interessante dingen in het boek ter overweging. En het is geinig op gezet.

Soms is het beslist interessant om over na te denken, soms wijkt het af van het oorspronkelijke idee, soms gaat het te ver/ diep.

Summary:

The book covers several chapters from Little House on the Prairie. It goes a bit deeper into the performance and tries to follow the thoughts of Pa and Ma.

First, it deals with the Ingalls family leaving Wisconsin. About leaving the family and friends behind. That this was especially difficult for Ma. There follows a chapter about crossing rivers, at that time usually without a bridge, and that this did indeed entail danger, because rivers could suddenly rise with all the associated risks. That Pa knew this risk and therefore really had to consider whether crossing a river was safe. It discusses building the house and how much work this was and relatively safe. Ma is also discussed more often and how she did her best to be feminine and neat in the rough environment. How she tries to make the log cabin cozy and how she teaches the girls manners. It is about wolves and the big wolves on the prairie, which were really dangerous. The book often quotes other pioneers who wrote about it. Then we get into Laura's extensive description of building two doors without nails. And borrowing nails from Mr. Edwards and how Pa and Ma preferred not to be in debt to others. Then we talk about building a chimney, which was extremely hard work with lugging stones. That Pa got off easy by making the top of sticks and clay, but that also created a dangerous situation. There is a chapter about digging the well and that this did indeed cause deaths in the wide area of ​​Kansas and that digging a well was risky. There is a chapter about the cow and calf that Pa got and how important that was for the farm and the transport of the herds across the prairie. A chapter is about the berries in the low country by the river and the beads that the girls found in the Indian camp. Finally, of course, it is also about the malaria that the whole family had at the same time and the help they received from the black doctor Tann and the neighbor Mrs. Scott. It is about fever and chills. It's about Pa who's gone and Ma is left behind with very little. Ma, who is afraid of Indians, and yet has to deal with them. Who is always cheerful, but must have known fear. Who sings sweet lullabies to her children with a gun in her lap. Of course it's about the Indians and the jamboree, about the Osage and the land that was allocated to them and where Pa had gone to live. It's about the Indians themselves and their customs and the strong smell of a skunk skin. About the Indians who thought that everything belonged to everyone and knew no private property. It's also ultimately about the departure of the Indians and Laura seeing her papoose. Of course there's a chapter about Christmas, where the girls were so happy with their presents. It's about prairie fires and how dangerous that was. The book contains a lot of (invented) information, not really factual, but from other experiences.

Drawings:

There are a number of drawings in the book throughout the story that have something to do with that chapter. A cow being milked, Dr. Tann's gravestone, a skunk and wolves. No very special pictures. There is a picture of a boundary marker and a picture of the sheet music of Blue Juniata. And a picture of a log cabin.

Own opinion:

Book bought in 2021 at Amazon at the same time as a number of others. I already had more books by Dan L. White and wanted to read this one.

Like all the other books, the book is certainly interesting and it is a good read. But sometimes the theme is far-fetched and sometimes the intention is good, but the execution is mediocre. Then the topic addressed is good, but the execution is ultimately far-fetched. But there are interesting things in the book to consider. And it is nicely set up.

Sometimes it is definitely interesting to think about, sometimes it deviates from the original idea, sometimes it goes too far/deep.

Dit boekje gaat alleen maar over hoe je quilts kunt maken die Laura ook maakte. De patronen worden beschreven, verder niet uitgelegd. De patronen zijn geïnspireerd op de boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder. In het boek staat eerst algemene informatie over Laura Ingalls en over het maken van en de benodigdheden voor quilten. De verschillende patronen zijn in volgorde van moeilijkheid ingedeeld. Er staan 14 patronen in het boek, die genoemd zijn naar iets wat te maken heeft met de boeken; zoals “sneeuwbal” of “vliegende ganzen”. Drie patronen komen ook voor in de boeken, het nine-patch-quilt, Bear’s Paw en Doves in the Window.

Bij alle quilts staan stukjes uitleg over het leven van de pioneers en de verwijzing naar de naam van het quilt.

Tekeningen:

Het boek bevat geen tekeningen, alleen om de patronen te verduidelijken. Dus heel veel plaatjes van blokken, driehoeken en hoe het in elkaar moet passen.

Eigen mening:

Simpel boekje, netjes, interessant voor de quilts. De uitleg is duidelijk.

Summary:

This book is only about how to make quilts that Laura also made. The patterns are described, not explained further. The patterns are inspired by the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder. The book first contains general information about Laura Ingalls and about making and the supplies for quilting. The different patterns are arranged in order of difficulty. There are 14 patterns in the book, which are named after something that has to do with the books; such as "snowball" or "flying geese". Three patterns also appear in the books, the nine-patch quilt, Bear's Paw and Doves in the Window.

All quilts have bits of explanation about the life of the pioneers and a reference to the name of the quilt.

Drawings:

The book does not contain drawings, only to clarify the patterns. So a lot of pictures of blocks, triangles and how it should fit together.

Own opinion:

Simple book, neat, interesting for the quilts. The explanation is clear.

Het is een dun boekje met het simpele verhaal van het leven van Laura Ingalls Wilder. Snel vertelt vanaf het begin tot aan haar dood. De tussenliggende jaren en ook het jaar in Burr Oak worden aangehaald. Het boekje is prettig te lezen en het is een "verhaal". Er wordt niet alleen een opsomming gegeven van informatie, maar er worden ook kleine details in vertelt zoals dat Pa zit te zingen op de prairie en hoe Laura de tafels der vermenigvuldiging leert in Burr Oak. Op het eind wordt het wel meer een opsomming van de al bekende gegevens.

Tekeningen:

Er staan een paar tekeningen in het boek. Mooie, paginagrote tekeningen. Ieder hoofdstuk heeft 1 eigen tekening. Het is een plattegrond van Amerika, het gezin Ingalls voor de open haard in de blokhut, terwijl Pa viool speelt voor de meisjes, een tekening van uit de dugout met Pa die over de loopbrug loopt en Laura en Carrie die met Ma staan te praten. Dan een tekening van het hotel in Burr Oak. Een tekening van Laura die een hooistok maakt en Pa die binnenkomt uit de sneeuwstorm. De tekening van Laura in een besneeuwd schoolhuisje en Almanzo in de slee die haar op komt halen. De volgende tekening is van Rose die met boeken en emmertje naar school loopt door een bos, waar verder haar ouders een boom aan het omzagen zijn. Dan een tekening van Laura aan haar schrijftafel, ze leest een brief en Almanzo kijkt over haar schouder mee. Een tekening van Almanzo en Laura op reis. Eigen mening:

Een mooi boekje, al is het dun en al is het verhaal bekend. Het is prettig geschreven. Tekeningen zijn mooi. Dit boek past binnen de serie en geeft een mooi overzicht. Renée Graef weet op een juiste manier gevoel te brengen in haar tekeningen. Ze heeft ook gebruik gemaakt van bekende foto's en die nagetekend. Daardoor zijn de gezichten (ook die van de oudere Laura en Almanzo) heel waarheidsgetrouw. De tekeningen zijn lief en beelden echt iets uit dat bij het verhaal past.

Summary:

It is a thin book with the simple story of the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder. A fast tell from the beginning until her death. The intervening years and also the year in Burr Oak are mentioned. The book is pleasant to read and it is a "story". Not only it is a summary of information given, but small details are also told, such as Pa singing on the prairie and how Laura learns the multiplication tables in Burr Oak. At the end it becomes more of a summary of the already known data.

Drawings:

There are a few drawings in the book. Beautiful, full-page drawings. Each chapter has 1 of its own drawing. It is a map of America, the Ingalls family in front of the fireplace in the log cabin, while Pa plays the violin for the girls, a drawing from the dugout with Pa walking over the plankbridge and Laura and Carrie talking to Ma. Then a drawing of the hotel in Burr Oak. A drawing of Laura making a haystick and Pa coming in from the snowstorm. The drawing of Laura in a snowy schoolhouse and Almanzo in the sleigh that comes to pick her up. The next drawing is of Rose walking to school with books and a bucket through a forest, where her parents are sawing down a tree. Then a drawing of Laura at her desk, she is reading a letter and Almanzo is looking over her shoulder. A drawing of Almanzo and Laura on a trip. And finally a portrait drawing of Laura.

Own opinion:

A beautiful book, even though it is thin and the story is well-known. It is pleasantly written. The drawings are beautiful. This book fits within the series and gives a nice overview. Renée Graef knows how to convey feeling in her drawings in the right way. She also used well-known photos and copied them. As a result, the faces (including those of the older Laura and Almanzo) are very true to life. The drawings are sweet and really depict something that fits the story.

Heel veel informatie. Het boek bestaat uit drie delen, onderverdeeld in aparte hoofdstukken. Het boek beschrijft heel chronologisch en gedetailleerd het leven van Laura, gebaseerd ook uit brieven.

Tekeningen:

De bekende foto’s, met een aantal algemene toevoegingen. Dit boek is niet interessant voor plaatjes of foto’s. er staat een foto in van een indiaan, van Pa en Ma, van een familie voor een dugout, van een trein die gestopt wordt door de sprinkhanenplaag, van de drie zusjes, van Mary en van Almanzo en van Laura, de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura en de foto van hen tweeën later in Florida, een poster van de rode appel van Missouri en de familiefoto van de familie Ingalls. Dan een foto van Laura op de veranda van het huis in de stad, twee verschillende foto’s van Rose en een wat wazige foto van Rose met wild, los haar in een soort piama (minder bekende foto). Dan een foto van het huis in Mansfield in 1913 en een foto van Laura in 1917. Almanzo op de ploeg en Almanzo en Laura bij vrienden op de veranda. Weer een foto van Laura ui 1937 en een foto van Rose. Eigen mening:

Heel dik boek, boordevol informatie, veel feiten, goed uitgewerkt en ook nog goed geschreven. Prachtig boek. Wel moeilijk Engels.

A beautiful book, very thick, lots of facts and yet still well written. Based on Laura's entire life, everything is set against the history and events of that time. A lot of information. The book consists of three parts, divided into separate chapters. The book describes Laura's life very chronologically and in detail, also based on letters.

Drawings:

The well-known photos, with a number of general additions. This book is not interesting for pictures or photos. There is a photo of an Indian, of Pa and Ma, of a family in front of a dugout, of a train that is stopped by the locust plague, of the three sisters, of Mary and of Almanzo and of Laura, the wedding photo of Almanzo and Laura and the photo of the two of them later in Florida, a poster of the red apple of Missouri and the family photo of the Ingalls family. Then a photo of Laura on the porch of the house in town, two different photos of Rose and a somewhat blurry photo of Rose with wild, loose hair in a kind of pajamas (lesser known photo). Then a photo of the house in Mansfield in 1913 and a photo of Laura in 1917. Almanzo on the plough and Almanzo and Laura with friends on the porch. Another photo of Laura from 1937 and a photo of Rose. Very thick book, full of information, many facts, well worked out and also well written. Beautiful book. Difficult English though.

Samenvatting:

Het verhaal is vrij overgenomen uit de Laura-boeken. Het gaat over de dagen van reizen in de huifkar. Over het eten en slapen op de prairie. Het begint met dat de familie nog inkopen doet bij de winkel in Pepin en dan het grote meer oversteekt, dat nog bevroren is. Het gezin overnacht in een blokhut aan de andere kant van het meer. Terwijl Ma en meisjes in de blokhut voor het vuur slapen, slaapt Pa bij de huifkar en de paarden. Daarna reizen ze dag na dag verder. Op de prairie waait dagelijks de wind over het vlakke land. Zodra Pa de wagen stil zet, wordt er een kampement ingericht. Pa ontspant de paarden en maakt een plaats vrij voor het vuur. Ma maakt het eten. Daarna zit het gezin gezellig te eten. Laura en Mary delen een beker. Dan gaan Laura en Mary naar bed in de wagen. De volgende morgen is er ontbijt in het gras. Laura praat met de vogels, maar dat vindt Ma niet goed. Daarna kunnen Mary en Laura spelen in het hoge gras. Ze jagen achter de konijnen aan en kijken naar de vlinders. Tegen zonsondergang komt Pa terug met het wild dat hij heeft gevangen. Dan speelt Pa 's avonds op zijn viool onder de sterren op de lege prairie. 

Tekeningen:

Een dun kinderboekje met mooie tekeningen. Dit boekje is geïllustreerd door Renée Graef. Er is geprobeerd om in de trant van Garth Williams te tekenen met toestemming van Garth Williams. De tekeningen zijn in kleur. De tekeningen zijn met veel gevoel en erg mooi. Op de voorkant staat een tekening van de huifkar op de prairie met Mary en Laura achterin en Jack achter de wagen. De volgende tekening is van een besneeuwd bos met daarin de huifkar op een pad. De volgende tekening is van de huifkar met de paarden er voor met Pa, Ma, met Carrie in haar armen en Mary en Laura achter hen. Dan volgt een tekening van Pa die zijn huiden gaat ruilen in de winkel en Ma die Mary en Laura achter in de huifkar wat te ten geeft. Vervolgens is een tekening van Pepin op de oever en de kleine huifkar die midden op het grote, bevroren meer rijdt. Dan volgt de tekening van Ma, met Carrie in haar armen, en Laura en Mary op de grond voor een vuur. Je ziet door de deuropening Pa bij de paarden buiten staan. De volgende tekening is van de wagen op een brug, Mary en Laura kijken achter uit de wagen. Op het volgende plaatje zijn de zijkanten van het wagendoek omhoog gebonden, je ziet Mary spelen met Carrie en Laura kijkt verveeld uit de wagen. Vervolgens is het gezin op de wijde, grote prairie, de paarden rollen door het gras en de huifkar staat aan de zijkant. Pa kijkt naar de meisjes die door het gras rennen en Ma heeft Carrie aan de hand. Dan zijn alle meisjes aan het werk: Ma bakt vlees in een pan, Laura schept water in de koffiepot, Mary is bezig met de koffiemolen en Carrie speelt met bloemen. Op de tekening daarna is de avond gevallen. De paarden staan te grazen, er brand een vuurtje en Laura en Mary zitten te eten op de disselboom en Pa en Ma eten op de bok. Ma voert Carrie. In de volgende tekening kruipen Mary en Laura in bed in de wagen, Ma licht hen bij met een lantaarn. Vervolgens zit het gezin in het gras te ontbijten en Laura en Mary kijken naar de dieren. Op de daaropvolgende tekening rennen Mary en Laura door het gras achter de konijntjes aan. De zon gaat onder op het volgende plaatje en Pa komt thuis met het wild en Laura rent naast hem mee. De dag is weer voorbij en Pa zit bij het vuur te spelen op zijn viool, terwijl Ma de meisjes in de wagen een knuffel geeft en in bed legt. Op de allerlaatste tekening loopt Jack achter de wagen, Laura kijkt achter uit de wagen naar buiten.

Eigen mening:

Het is een samenvattend verhaal van de reis naar de prairie. Wel geinig vertelt. Mooie, hele mooie tekeningen, levendig, precies, gedetailleerd. Leuk om naar te kijken.

Summary:

The story is freely taken from the Laura books. It is about the days of traveling in the covered wagon. About eating and sleeping on the prairie. It starts with the family doing some shopping at the store in Pepin and then crossing the big lake, which is still frozen. The family spends the night in a log cabin on the other side of the lake. While Ma and the girls sleep in the log cabin in front of the fire, Pa sleeps by the covered wagon and the horses. After that they travel day after day. On the prairie the wind blows over the flat land every day. As soon as Pa stops the wagon, a camp is set up. Pa relaxes the horses and clears a place for the fire. Ma makes the food. After that the family sits down to eat together. Laura and Mary share a cup. Then Laura and Mary go to bed in the wagon. The next morning there is breakfast in the grass. Laura talks to the birds, but Ma does not like that. After that Mary and Laura can play in the tall grass. They chase the rabbits and watch the butterflies. At sunset, Pa returns with the game he has caught. Then, in the evening, Pa plays his violin under the stars on the empty prairie.

Drawings:

A thin children's book with beautiful drawings. This book is illustrated by Renée Graef. An attempt has been made to draw in the style of Garth Williams with permission from Garth Williams. The drawings are in color. The drawings are very sensitive and very beautiful. On the front is a drawing of the covered wagon on the prairie with Mary and Laura in the back and Jack behind the wagon. The next drawing is of a snowy forest with the covered wagon on its way. The next drawing is of the covered wagon with the horses in front with Pa, Ma, with Carrie in her arms and Mary and Laura behind them. Then follows a drawing of Pa who is going to exchange his skins in the store and Ma who is giving Mary and Laura something to eat in the back of the covered wagon. Then there is a drawing of Pepin on the shore and the little covered wagon that is driving in the middle of the large, frozen lake. Then comes the drawing of Ma, with Carrie in her arms, and Laura and Mary on the ground in front of a fire. Through the doorway you see Pa standing outside with the horses. The next drawing is of the wagon on a bridge, Mary and Laura looking out of the back of the wagon. In the next picture the sides of the wagon cloth are tied up, you see Mary playing with Carrie and Laura looking bored out of the wagon. Then the family is on the wide, big prairie, the horses rolling through the grass and the covered wagon is at the side. Pa is watching the girls running through the grass and Ma is holding Carrie by the hand. Then all the girls are working: Ma is frying meat in a pan, Laura is scooping water into the coffee pot, Mary is busy with the coffee grinder and Carrie is playing with flowers. In the next drawing it is evening. The horses are grazing, there is a fire burning and Laura and Mary are eating on the wagon tongue and Pa and Ma are eating on the wagon seat. Ma is feeding Carrie. In the next drawing, Mary and Laura crawl into bed in the wagon, Ma lights them with a lantern. Then the family sits in the grass having breakfast and Laura and Mary watch the animals. In the next drawing, Mary and Laura run through the grass after the rabbits. The sun sets in the next picture and Pa comes home with the game and Laura runs next to him. The day is over again and Pa sits by the fire playing his violin, while Ma gives the girls in the wagon a hug and puts them to bed. In the very last drawing, Jack walks behind the wagon, Laura looks out of the back of the wagon.

Own opinion:

It is a summary story of the journey to the prairie. Quite funny. Beautiful, very beautiful drawings, lively, precise, detailed. Nice to look at.
