Samenvatting:

Een prachtig dik boek met allemaal brieven van Laura en Rose. Over het ontstaan van de boeken, over de dagelijkse dingen onderling. Laura’s correspondentie met andere mensen. Erg mooi, eigen woorden, zeer netjes bewerkt. Het boek bestaat uit twee delen. Deel 1 bevat de periode van 1894 tot 1936. Het tweede deel is van 1937 tot 1956. De delen zijn onverdeeld in ieder 3 subhoofdstukken. En natuurlijk de nodig voorwoord en nawoord. Er staat ook een uitgebreide chronologie in het boek. Bij de gebruikte brieven/ kaarten staat de datum. Het is op chronologische volgorde geplaatst. Tussendoor staat cursief informatie. De tekst van Laura is één op één overgenomen. Ook staat boven elke brief wel aan wie deze gericht is. In 1915 zijn het brieven aan Almanzo uit San Francisco, maar er zijn ook brieven aan uitgevers en Ma, Mary, Carrie en Grace. Ook zijn er brieven opgenomen aan fans en ook veel brieven aan Rose. Het boek eindigt met de brief die Rose ontving na het overlijden van Laura. Het zijn brieven over het alledaagse leven en over de ontwikkeling van de serie boeken.

De meeste foto’s zijn bekend, sommige zijn iets minder bekend. Het zijn wel heel duidelijke plaatjes. Soms zijn de brieven ook ingescand, wat wel mooi is. Er is een foto van Laura bij de kast in de bibliotheek in Mansfield. Een foto van Almanzo en Laura in 1947 op Rocky Ridge Farm. Een foto van geschreven tekst. Een foto van Almanzo en Laura voor het rockhouse met hond Nero uit 1929. Een foto uit 1925 met Rose en Laura en auto Isabelle in Colorado. Een een foto van Laura zelf uit ongeveer 1917. Deze foto’s staan aan het begin van elk hoofdstukje. Verder zitten er foto’s bij elkaar in het midden van het boek. Eigen mening:

Erg mooi boek, waardevol, interessant, goed leesbaar. Gekregen van Bernhoven bij12,5 jarige aanwezigheid. Goed leesbaar en interessant. Ook wel af en toe “oh ja”- momentjes. Heel mooi boek, mooie compilatie.

Summary:

A beautiful, thick book containing letters from Laura and Rose. It covers the origins of the books, their daily lives, and Laura's correspondence with other people. Beautiful, in their own words, and meticulously edited. The book consists of two parts. Part 1 covers the period from 1894 to 1936. The second part covers the period from 1937 to 1956. Each part is divided into three subchapters. And, of course, the necessary foreword and afterword. The book also includes a detailed chronology. The dates of the letters/cards are listed chronologically, with information interspersed in italics. Laura's text is copied exactly. Each letter also lists the addressee. In 1915, the letters are to Almanzo in San Francisco, but there are also letters to publishers and Ma, Mary, Carrie, and Grace. There are also letters to fans and many letters to Rose. The book ends with the letter Rose received after Laura's death. They are letters about everyday life and the development of the book series.

Most of the photos are well-known, some are less well-known. They are very clear images. Sometimes the letters have also been scanned, which is nice. There's a photo of Laura by the bookcase in the library in Mansfield. A photo of Almanzo and Laura in 1947 at Rocky Ridge Farm. A photo of written text. A photo of Almanzo and Laura in front of the rockhouse with their dog, Nero, from 1929. A photo from 1925 with Rose and Laura and car Isabella in Colorado. My opinion:

A very beautiful book, valuable, interesting, and easy to read. Received from Bernhoven when I was there for 12 and a half years. Easy to read and interesting. There were also some occasional "oh yeah" moments. A very beautiful book, a wonderful compilation.

Deel 3 van de Charlotte serie.

We zijn inmiddels ruim 2 jaar verder. Charlotte (ruim 7 jaar) staat naar buiten te kijken in het huis. Buiten is het winter en koud, maar binnen is het gezellig in het Tuckerhuis. Lydia (11 jaar) vertelt een sprookje aan 4 jaar oude Mary. Ze is een vlecht aan het maken van stro, waar Lydia heel goed in is. Charlotte is het nog aan het leren. Binnen brand het vuur in de haard en is het warm, buiten is het koud en er ligt sneeuw. Moeder zegt tegen Charlotte dat ze de tafel moet dekken en dat zij zelf even gaat kijken waar Lucy blijft. Will en Lucy wonen in een kamer aan het huis van de Tuckers. Na de zware storm moest vader het huis gedeeltelijk vernieuwen en toen besloot moeder om dan maar meteen een extra slaapkamer er aan vast te bouwen voor vader en moeder. En als ze dan toch bezig waren, konden ze ook wel een extra kamer voor Will en Lucy bouwen, zodat die in de buurt konden wonen. En zo geschiedde. Meestal eten Will en Lucy mee met het gezin Tucker, vaak kookt Lucy ook mee. Moeder is verbaasd dat Lucy er vandaag nog niet is. Als ze gaat kijken blijkt Lucy ziek te zijn. Moeder stuurt Charlotte gauw naar de smidse, want de verloskundige moet komen. Als Charlotte bij de smidse vertelt dat Lucy ziek is, snelt Will naar huis. Vader gaat hem achterna. Lewis gaat naar de verloskundige. Als Charlotte weer thuis is, stuurt moeder alle kinderen naar vrienden om te eten en slapen. Uiteindelijk wordt er een jongetje geboren bij Will en Lucy. Dit jongetje wordt nogal geknuffeld door de meisjes. Charlotte is dol op het jongetje en speelt er graag mee en zorgt er goed voor.

Dit jaar heeft Charlotte geluk. Ze mag naar de wintertermijn van de school. Ze gaat samen met Tom naar school. Lydia is helaas ziek en moet nog wachten. Tijdens de winterschool is er een heel gemene, nare schoolmeester. Hij doet onaardig en ongeïnteresseerd en zegt gemene dingen. Charlotte is bang van de meester en nog banger dat hij zal slaan. Ze heeft er veel moeite mee dat hij oneerlijk is, zoals dat hij een jongen die iedere dag iets te laat komt altijd in de hoek zet. Hoewel iedereen weet dat deze jongen van ver komt en eerst zijn zieke moeder moet verzorgen en alle dieren en dan pas kan komen. Ook zet hij twee kinderen bij elkaar die altijd ruzie hebben. Hij wordt boos op Charlotte omdat ze op de eerste dag niet op de goede plek gaat zitten. School wordt minder leuk door deze leraar.

In deze nieuwe tijd komt de eerste gaslamp in Boston. Iedereen wil gaan kijken en zo ook Charlotte. Helaas gaat dat uitje voor haar niet door, maar Vader en Moeder gaan wel, met Lewis. Charlotte vindt het oneerlijk en moppert zachtjes. Als Vader en Moeder en Lewis weg zijn met Wil, Lucy en de baby, besluiten Tom, Charlotte en Mary om krabben te gaan zoeken in het moeras. Lydia blijft thuis om op het huis te letten. Als de kinderen zoeken, valt Mary en verdwijnt onder water Tom en Charlotte zijn doodsbang, maar Tom vindt snel een touw wat hij om zichzelf heen bindt en zwemt zo goed als hij kan naar Mary toe. Hij weet haar te bereiken, bindt het touw om beiden heen en Charlotte trekt beide kinderen naar de kant. Nat en koud zijn Mary en Tom, maar Mary gaat al snel weer ademen, tot opluchting van de kinderen. Ze gaan gauw naar huis om op te warmen. Als Vader en Moeder thuiskomen, hebben ze wel wat te vertellen en zijn bang voor de reprimande. Gelukkig zijn Vader en Moeder vooral blij dat ze zo goed hebben gehandeld en Mary hebben gered.

Op school lukt het Charlotte niet om stil te zitten. Ze doet haar best, maar haar benen wiebelen en ze kijkt om naar anderen. De leraar zegt haar stil te zitten. Als haar dit niet lukt, wordt Charlotte uit de klas gestuurd. Ze vindt het vreselijk. Omdat ze lang op de gang moet zitten, bekijkt ze alle jassen. Bij een van de jassen is een knoop los en Charlotte besluit deze er weer aan vast te zetten met haar borduurnaald. Uiteindelijk blijkt het de jas van de meester te zijn en eerst wordt hij nog bozer. Na school gaan Charlotte, Tom en Lydia schaatsen. Als ze thuiskomen blijkt de meester op bezoek te zijn! Gelukkig neemt Moeder het voor Charlotte op en er is een goed gesprek. Ook komt ter sprake wat Charlotte niet eerlijk vindt en dat de meester eigenlijk helemaal geen les wil geven, maar het moet van zijn vader. Hij zou liever willen helpen bij het graven van een kanaal ergens in Amerika.

De volgende dag op school begint de meester te vertellen over het kanaal, hij wordt een andere man. Nog steeds vindt hij het luisteren naar de lessen saai en zou hij liever ergens anders zijn, maar hij heeft iets meer begrip voor de kinderen en zeker voor de jongen die altijd te laat komt.

Er wordt het ontstaan van gas en licht genoemd en het graven van het Erie-kanaal.

Op het einde is er een uitje voor de hele familie. Een dorp verderop is een jaarmarkt. Met het hele gezin Tucker gaan ze er heen. Lydia en Charlotte mogen alleen rondlopen en zien van alles. Vader en Lewis helpen de herbergier met het beslaan van paarden. Die avond blijven ze slapen in de herberg. Er is een spannend verhaal dat een legerofficier in de kamer waar het gezin Tucker slaapt een diamant is verloren die hij aan zijn vrouw wilde geven. Het is al jaren geleden en de hele herberg is overhoop gehaald, maar de diamant is nooit gevonden. Het is spannend om hier aan te denken als ze allemaal in bed liggen.

Het hele verhaal beslaat ongeveer 6 maanden.

Tekeningen:

Er staan een paar grote plaatjes in het boek, van Charlotte's hand die de knoop van een jas aannaait, van een reus met een zak over zijn schouder, Van een lei met veer en een schrijftschrift en van Charlotte die een grote pompoen bekijkt.
Verder staat er een klein plaatje bij het begin van ieder hoofdstuk. Zoals van een biggetje, vogel, reiger, lammetje. Van een kopje en theepot, een kar vol spullen, een hutkoffer met inhoud, een bootje aan een touw in het water, een baby, een gasvlam, een meisje op een paard, een man in nette kleren aan het scheppen.

Eigen mening:

Een volgend verhaal in de Charlotte-serie. Het is een beetje een raar verhaal. Niet heel erg positief.

Summary:

Part 3 of the Charlotte years.

We're now more than two years later. Charlotte (just over 7 years old) is looking out of the house. Outside, it's winter and cold, but inside, it's cozy in the Tucker house. Lydia (11 years old) is telling a fairy tale to 4-year-old Mary. She's braiding straw, which Lydia is very good at. Charlotte is still learning. Inside, the fire is burning in the hearth and it's warm; outside, it's cold and snowy. Mother tells Charlotte to set the table and that she'll go check on Lucy. Will and Lucy live in a room attached to the Tucker house. After the heavy storm, Father had to partially renovate the house, so Mother decided to add an extra bedroom for them. And while they were at it, they might as well build an extra room for Will and Lucy so they could live nearby. And so they did. Will and Lucy usually eat with the Tucker family, and Lucy often helps. Mother is surprised that Lucy isn't with them yet today. When she goes to check, it turns out Lucy is ill. Mother quickly sends Charlotte to the forge because the midwife has to come. When Charlotte tells in the forge that Lucy is ill, Will rushes home. Father follows him. Lewis goes to the midwife. When Charlotte gets home, Mother sends all the children to friends for dinner and a nap. Eventually, a baby boy is born to Will and Lucy. This little boy is someone the girls like to cuddle. Charlotte loves the boy, loves to play with him, and takes good care of him.

This year, Charlotte is lucky. She gets to go to the winter term. She goes to school with Tom. Unfortunately, Lydia is ill and has to wait. During winter school, there's a very mean, nasty teacher. He's unkind and uninterested, and says mean things. Charlotte is afraid of the teacher and even more afraid that he'll hit her. She struggles with his unfairness, such as always putting a boy who arrives a little late every day in the corner. Even though everyone knows this boy comes from far away and first has to take care of his sick mother and all the animals before he can come. He also puts two children together who are always arguing. He gets angry at Charlotte because she doesn't sit in the right place on the first day. School becomes less fun because of this teacher.

In this new era, the first gas lamp arrives in Boston. Everyone wants to go see it, including Charlotte. Unfortunately, the outing doesn't happen for her, but Father and Mother do go, with Lewis. Charlotte thinks it's unfair and grumbles quietly. When Father and Mother and Lewis leave with Wil, Lucy, and the baby, Tom, Charlotte, and Mary decide to go crab hunting in the swamp. Lydia stays home to watch the house. While the children are searching, Mary falls and disappears underwater. Tom and Charlotte are terrified, but Tom quickly finds a rope, ties it around himself, and swims as best he can to Mary. He manages to reach her, ties the rope around them both, and Charlotte pulls both children to the side. Mary and Tom are wet and cold, but Mary soon starts breathing again, to the children's relief. They quickly go home to warm up. When Father and Mother get home, they have something to talk about and are afraid of the reprimand. Fortunately, Father and Mother are mainly happy that they did so well and saved Mary.

At school, Charlotte can't sit still. She tries her best, but her legs wobble and she looks around at others. The teacher tells her to sit still. When she can't, Charlotte is sent out of class. She's devastated. Because she has to sit in the hallway for a long time, she looks at all the coats. A button on one of the coats is loose, and Charlotte decides to sew it back on with her embroidery needle. Eventually, it turns out to be the teacher's coat, and he gets even angrier. After school, Charlotte, Tom, and Lydia go ice skating. When they get home, the teacher is visiting! Fortunately, Mother stands up for Charlotte, and they have a good conversation. They also discuss what Charlotte thinks is unfair, and how the teacher doesn't actually want to teach at all, but his father insists. He'd rather help dig a canal somewhere in America.

The next day at school, the teacher starts talking about the canal; he becomes a different man. He still finds listening to the lessons boring and would rather be somewhere else, but he has a little more understanding for the children, especially for the boy who's always late.

The origins of gas and electricity and the digging of the Erie Canal are mentioned.

At the end, there's an outing for the whole family. A village further on is holding an annual fair. The entire Tucker family goes there. Lydia and Charlotte are allowed to wander around on their own and see all sorts of things. Father and Lewis help the innkeeper. shoeing horses. That night they stay overnight at the inn. There's a thrilling story about an army officer who lost a diamond in the room where the Tucker family is sleeping, one he wanted to give to his wife. It happened years ago, and the entire inn was ransacked, but the diamond was never found. It's exciting to think about this as they all lie in bed.

The entire story spans about six months.

Illustrations:

There are a few large illustrations in the book: Charlotte's hand sewing on a coat button, a giant with a bag over his shoulder, a slate with a quill and a notebook, and Charlotte examining a large pumpkin.

There's also a small illustration at the beginning of each chapter, such as a piglet, a bird, a heron, or a lamb. A cup and teapot, a cart full of things, a trunk with its contents, a small boat on a rope in the water, a baby, a gas flame, a girl on a horse, a man in smart clothes shoveling.

My opinion:

Another story in the Charlotte series. It's a bit of a strange one. Not very positive.

Dit is weer echt een boekje van Dan L. White. Veel herhaalde teksten, veel gekopieerd en tussendoor informatie en iets om over na te denken.

Eerst wordt in gegaan op de boeken versus de televisieserie. De verschillende spelers in de serie en dezelfde personen in de boeken. De episodes in de serie of die overeenkomen met de boeken. Allereerst wordt er ingegaan op dat Laura geen televisieserie wilde, dat deze er pas kwam toen Roger Lea MacBride de rechten kreeg. Er wordt ingegaan op de verhalen die Laura heeft geschreven en de stukjes daaruit over Nellie ed. Ook komen Laura’s favoriete psalmen voorbij, om te beschrijven wat voor mens ze was. Dan komt een stuk over de ontwikkelingen van de serie, oa dat Laura de rechten eigenlijk aan de bibliotheek had nagelaten, maar Rose ze aan Roger Lea MacBride gaf. De verschillen tussen Laura en Rose worden aangestipt. Er wordt ingegaan op dat Ed Friendly begon met de serie en Michael Landon aannam. Dat de eerste 1,5 uur durende opname al een succes was en dat de serie daarna een succes bleef. Maar dat in die eerste 1,5 uur al meteen het hele boek ”het kleine huis op de prairie” werd behandeld. Er wordt ingegaan op de onenigheid tussen Ed Friendly en Michael Landon waarbij de ene wilde dat de boeken meer werden gevolgd en de ander inzag dat dat niet genoeg interessante televisie opleverde.

Daarna wordt elke boek per hoofdstuk behandeld. Allereerst het kleine huis in het grote bos. Er wordt besproken hoe positief en liefdevol het boek is en de kernwaarden die de Laura-boeken voeren. Daarna wordt ingegaan op in welke afleveringen van de serie stukken uit de dit boek voorkomen. De titel van de aflevering wordt genoemd en wat er gebeurd. Waarbij je vooral leest dat personen terugkomen en het vaag linkt aan de boeken. Ook het vertrek van Pa komt voor in de televisieserie.

Daarna komt natuurlijk Farmer Boy. In principe staat die vrij los van de televisieserie. Het boek wordt eerst weer besproken, of eigenlijk meer Almanzo. Dean Butler komt aan het woord.

Vervolgens gaat het over de prairie in Kansas. In principe het boek waar de televisieserie naar vernoemd is, maar die al in de eerste aflevering wordt behandeld. Er wordt ingegaan op de geboorte van Carrie en hoe Carrie’s leven in het echt verloopt. Daarna komt het stuk over de tweeling in de Tv-serie die Carrie speelt. Natuurlijk komt ook Mr. Edwards aan bod en in welke aflevering het kerstfeest wordt gespeeld.

Vervolgens wordt naar de periode in Walnut Grove gekeken. Dit boek linkt het meeste aan de televisieserie, omdat het gezin net buiten de stad aan een beekje woont. Eigenlijk heeft de Tv-serie de verkeerde titel. Er wordt besproken dat het gezin eerst in een dugout woonde. Er wordt uitgebreid ingegaan op Walnut Grove en de mensen die daar woonden; de Oleson’s, Rev. Alden, Mrs. Beadle, en natuurlijk de sprinkhaanplagen. In de besproken periode wordt baby Freddie geboren, wordt Mary blind, Ma erg ziek. Uiteindelijk komen al deze dingen terug in de serie. Het wordt niet closely gelinkt, maar zijdelings wel heel erg. Er wordt dan meer gebruik gemaakt van Pioneer Girl dan echt van de boeken. Er wordt ingegaan op Mary’s blindheid en hoe haar echte leven verder verloopt en dat ze nooit trouwt, maar in de serie wel. Nellie Oleson uit de boeken wordt natuurlijk besproken en hoe de Nellie in de serie is. Eigenlijk wordt er best veel naast elkaar gelegd, waarbij duidelijk blijkt dat uit “on the banks of Plum Creek” het meeste is gebruikt in de Tv-serie.

Dan komt natuurlijk de Lange Winter. Eerst wordt weer ingegaan op de boeken en het echte leven, om daarna de link met de Tv-serie te leggen. Slechts kleine stukken van de echte tijd komen terug in de serie, zoals kinderen die op school moeten blijven tijdens een sneeuwstorm of de kracht die het gezin Ingalls uit die periode heeft geput.

Uit “de kleine stad op de prairie” is wel weer meer gebruikt. Oa natuurlijk de komst van Mrs Wilder als lerares, die niet dol is op Laura. Er wordt in het hele boek vooral wat meer ingegaan op de verhalen en personen uit de boeken en in real live en daaraan gelinkt de Tv-serie, waar vooral korte stukken terugkomen die gebruikt zijn uit de boeken.

Natuurlijk komt daarna de verloving, verkeringstijd en huwelijk van Almanzo en Laura aan bod. Hoe Nellie daar tussen wrong en hoe het uiteindelijk allemaal goed komt. Ook hier wordt weer vooral ingegaan op wat er in de boeken gebeurd, in het echt en vervolgens wat dan wordt overgenomen in de Tv-serie. Als laatste komt dan “de vier prairiejaren” aan bod. Dat was vooral het einde van de serie dat Laura getrouwd is met Almanzo. Enkele dingen komen wel terug uit de Tv-serie, maar er wordt ook benoemd wat niet meer klopt, zoals dat Jenny, dochter van Royal, bij Laura en Almanzo komt wonen, wat in het echte leven dus zeker niet zo is. Ook de akelige dingen die Almanzo en Laura overkomen worden besproken en dat sommige daarvan zorgde voor de dramatiek in de serie.

Als laatste hoofdstuk wordt dan besproken in hoeverre de personen uit de Tv-serie hun personage uit de boeken echt goed evenaren. Veel lof voor Nellie Oleson/ Allison Arngrim en Melissa Gilbert/ Laura Ingalls en Michael Landon/ Pa. Waarbij over all toch wel wordt gezegd dat de cast goed paste bij de figuren die ze speelden.

Om te eindigen met nog eenmaal de overkoepelende vergelijking tussen de serie en de boeken.

Tekeningen:

Er staan foto’s in het boek van Laura, Almanzo, Pa en Ma, Carrie, Mary en Grace en een plaatje van een sprinkhanenplaag. De foto’s zijn bekende foto’s en verder is het niet veel bijzonders. Er is ook een foto van het oude Walnut Grove.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 bij Amazon Ik had al meer van deze schrijver en wilde wel wat meer weten hoe hij schreef over de TV serie en de echte Laura Ingalls. Het boek is niet onaardig en de manier om dit zo te schrijven is wel leuk.

Summary:

This is another Dan L. White book. Lots of repetition, lots of copy, and interspersed information and food for thought.

First, the book and the television series are discussed. The various characters in the series and the characters in the books are also discussed. The episodes in the series, or those that correspond to the books, are discussed. First, the book discusses Laura's lack of a television series; it only came about when Roger Lea MacBride acquired the rights. It discusses the stories Laura wrote and the excerpts from them about Nellie. Laura's favorite psalms are also discussed, describing what kind of person she was. Then comes a section on the series' development, including how Laura originally bequeathed the rights to the library, but Rose gave them to Roger Lea MacBride. The differences between Laura and Rose are highlighted. The book discusses Ed Friendly's origins in the series and Michael Landon's hiring. The first 1.5-hour recording was a success, and the series continued to be successful. But in those first hour and a half, the entire book "Little House on the Prairie" was covered. It addresses the disagreement between Ed Friendly and Michael Landon, where one wanted the books to be followed more closely, while the other realized that didn't make for enough interesting television.

Each book is then discussed chapter by chapter. First, Little House in the Big Woods. It discusses how positive and loving the book is and the core values ​​of the Laura books. Then, it discusses which episodes of the series feature parts of this book. The episode title and what happens are mentioned. The main focus is on returning characters, which vaguely connects to the books. Pa's departure also appears in the television series.

Then, of course, Farmer Boy is discussed. It's essentially a separate issue from the television series. The book is discussed first, or rather, Almanzo. Dean Butler is given a chance to speak.

Then it's on to the Kansas prairie. This is essentially the book after which the television series is named, but which is already discussed in the first episode. The book discusses Carrie's birth and how Carrie's life unfolds in real life. This is followed by a segment about the twins in the TV series, who play Carrie. Mr. Edwards is also discussed, of course, and the episode where Christmas takes place.

Next, the story explores the time period in Walnut Grove. This book is most closely linked to the TV series because the family lives just outside town, along a creek. Actually, the TV series has the wrong title. It discusses that the family initially lived in a dugout. Walnut Grove and the people who lived there are discussed in detail: the Olesons, Rev. Alden, Mrs. Beadle, and, of course, the locust plagues. During this time, baby Freddie is born, Mary goes blind, and Ma becomes very ill. Ultimately, all these things recur in the series. While not closely linked, they are very indirectly linked. Pioneer Girl is used more than the books themselves. The series explores Mary's blindness and how her real life unfolds, including the fact that she never marries, but does so in the series. Nellie Oleson from the books is, of course, discussed, as is the Nellie in the series. Quite a lot of context is compared, with the TV series clearly showing that "On the Banks of Plum Creek" was used most frequently.

Then, of course, comes The Long Winter. First, the series revisits the books and real life, then links to the TV series. Only brief excerpts from real life appear in the series, such as children having to stay in school during a snowstorm or the strength the Ingalls family drew from that period.

More use is made of "The Little Town on the Prairie," including, of course, the arrival of Mrs. Wilder as a teacher, who isn't fond of Laura. Throughout the book, the series focuses more on the stories and characters from the books and in real life, and is linked to the TV series, where mainly short excerpts from the books are used.

Naturally, the next chapter covers Almanzo and Laura's engagement, courtship, and marriage. How Nellie interfered, and how everything ultimately works out. Here, too, the focus is primarily on what happened in the books, in real life, and then what was then carried over into the TV series. Finally, "The Four Prairie Years" is discussed. This was primarily the end of the series, when Laura married Almanzo. Some elements from the TV series are repeated, but some things are also mentioned that are no longer true, such as Jenny, Royal's daughter, coming to live with Laura and Almanzo, which is certainly not the case in real life. The unpleasant things that happened to Almanzo and Laura are also discussed, some of which contributed to the drama in the series.

The final chapter then focuses on the discussion how well the characters from the TV series truly emulate their book characters. Much praise goes to Nellie Oleson/Allison Arngrim, Melissa Gilbert/Laura Ingalls, and Michael Landon/Pa. Overall, it's said that the cast was a good fit for the characters they played.

To conclude with one more overarching comparison between the series and the books.

The book contains photos of Laura, Almanzo, Ma and Pa, Carrie, Mary and Grace, and a picture of a plague of locusts. The photos are familiar, and beyond that, there's nothing special. There's also a photo of old Walnut Grove.

My opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 from Amazon. I'd already read more by this author and wanted to know more about how he wrote about the TV series and the real Laura Ingalls. The book isn't bad, and the writing style is quite nice.

Dan komt er een handgeschreven brief van Laura Ingalls. Vervolgens volgt er een korte stamboom van Laura's voorvaderen van de kant van Ingalls. Het boekje eindigt met het verhaal van Pepin zelf, over het lokaliseren van de juiste plaats waar Laura geboren is, tot het bouwen van het museum en de blokhut die er bij horen.

Er staan veel foto's in het boekje. De eerste foto's zijn de bekende foto's van de familie Ingalls en Almanzo en Laura samen. Dan staan er 4 kleine foto's van de man van wie Pa het land kocht en de juf van Mary en Laura, Ann Barry. De tante (en zus van ma) Martha Quiner Carpenter en een foto van Thomas Quiner. Vervolgens nog een paar foto's van Pepin tegenwoordig en de little house wayside. Ook staan er foto’s in van de inhuldiging van de Wayside.

Een dun boekje, speciaal over Pepin. Wel interessant. Niet alle informatie klopt.

A very small book. It begins with a brief summary of all the Ingalls family's travels and how things developed for the family, including marriages, deaths, and so on. This is followed by photographs. There are also handwritten letters from Ma and Pa. There's also a timeline from 1836, when Pa was born, to 1874, when the Ingalls family moved to Walnut Grove. Then comes a handwritten letter from Laura Ingalls. This is followed by a short family tree of Laura's ancestors on the Ingalls side. The book concludes with Pepin's own account, covering the process of locating Laura's birthplace and building the museum and its associated log cabin.

Illustrations:

The book contains many photographs. The first few are the familiar photos of the Ingalls family, Almanzo, and Laura together. Then there are four smaller photos of the man from whom Pa bought the land and Mary and Laura's teacher, Ann Barry. Aunt (and Ma's sister) Martha Quiner Carpenter and a photo of Thomas Quiner. Then there are a few photos of Pepin today and the little house wayside. There are also photos of the wayside's inauguration.

My own opinion:

A small book, specifically about Pepin. Interesting. Not all the information is accurate.

Op de ontginning is het goed en Laura helpt Pa met het binnenhalen van de oogst en het hooien. Al snel blijkt dat Pa bezorgd is over de komende winter, en als dan ook nog de indiaan zijn waarschuwing laat horen over dat het een strenge winter gaat worden, besluit Pa om met zijn gezin in de stad te gaan wonen. Laura en Carrie maken nog een barre tocht mee door de sneeuwstorm van school naar de stad terug, als de sneeuwstorm de kinderen in de school overvalt. Het gezin probeert te overleven met het weinige dat ze hebben aan brandstof en eten. Pa leert Laura om “hooistokken” te maken, ze malen graan in een koffiemolen voor dagelijks brood. Ze vieren kerst met kleine kadootjes. De trein kan niet meer tot het stadje komen en de bevolking lijdt honger. Almanzo en Cap Garland gaan de prairie op op zoek naar een boer met zaaitarwe om te kopen. Ze redden daarmee de stad. Uiteindelijk, na maanden, stoppen de sneeuwstormen. Het gezin heeft de lange winter overleeft en het boek eindigt met een kerstfeest in mei.

Summary:

Things are going well on the field, and Laura helps Pa with harvesting and making hay. It soon becomes clear that Pa is worried about the coming winter, and when the Indian warns him that it will be a harsh one, Pa decides to move his family to the city.
