Samenvatting:

Op de ontginning is het goed en Laura helpt Pa met het binnenhalen van de oogst en het hooien. Al snel blijkt dat Pa bezorgd is over de komende winter en als dan ook nog de indiaan zijn waarschuwing laat horen over dat het een strenge winter gaat worden, besluit Pa om met zijn gezin in de stad te gaan wonen. Laura vindt het in het begin helemaal niet leuk in de stad. Samen met Carrie wordt ze naar school gestuurd. Op school leert ze andere kinderen kennen zoals Mary Power en Minnie Johnson en al snel vindt Laura het leuk met haar vriendinnen. Al snel beginnen de sneeuwstormen en de school wordt gesloten. Laura en Carrie maken nog een barre tocht mee door de sneeuwstorm van school naar de stad terug, als de sneeuwstorm de kinderen in de school overvalt. Het gezin probeert te overleven met het weinige dat ze hebben aan brandstof en eten. Pa leert Laura om “hooistokken” te maken, ze malen graan in een koffiemolen voor dagelijks brood. Ze vieren kerst met kleine kadootjes. De trein kan niet meer tot het stadje komen en de bevolking lijdt honger. Almanzo en Cap Garland gaan de prairie op op zoek naar een boer met zaaitarwe, om deze te kopen voor de noodlijdende stad. Ze redden daarmee de stad. Uiteindelijk, na maanden, stoppen de sneeuwstormen. Het gezin heeft de lange winter overleeft en het boek eindigt met een kerstfeest in mei.

Er staan 33 hoofdstukken in het boek.

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan de mooie tekeningen van Garth Williams, tekeningen zoals we die kennen vol leven en gevoel. Tekeningen waarop het lijkt alsof de mensen zo op kunnen staan. Van Almanzo en Royal aan het pannenkoeken bakken tot Laura die Pa helpt met het maken van hooistokken. Er zijn meer tekeningen in het Engelse boek dan in de Nederlandse. Tekeningen zijn: Laura met de waterfles op het hooiveld, Laura stampt het hooi aan in de wagen, klein huisje op de prairie, Laura en Carrie in het hoge gras en een hoogopgeladen hooiwagen in het veld, de familie Ingalls rondom de kachel, Pa breekt ijs los van de snuit van een dier, Pa laat aan de oever van het meer een vogel los, de indiaan in de winkel, Ma en de meisjes hangen gordijnen voor de ramen, Laura en Carrie lopen naar school en Cap Garland vangt de bal, Almanzo aan het pannenkoeken bakken, mannen op een handkar op het spoor, Mary en Laura in een schommelstoel voor het raam, mensen buiten in de sneeuw, Mary en Laura aan het naaien aan tafel, Almanzo stopt zijn zaaitarwe in de extra ruimte, Ma brengt bevroren was binnen, Pa en Laura maken hooistokken, Meneer Foster met geweer met Almanzo op een paard en ver weg de antilopen, de superintendent in de locomotief die wordt uitgegraven, Pa leest voor uit het groen boek, Pa vult zijn emmer met zaaitarwe, Almanzo aan het houtsnijden, een omgevallen slee vol zakken en een slee op de sneeuw met twee mannen erbij, Pa schudt zijn vuist naar de storm terwijl de familie rondom de kachel zit, Royal helpt Almanzo met zijn voeten ontdooien, de trein komt aan in de stad en een zingend meisje.

Eigen mening:

Hetzelfde boek als in het Nederlands, maar dan in Engels. Leuk boek, maar wel somber en zwaar thema. Leuk dat er extra tekeningen in staan van Garth Williams.

Summary:

Things are going well on the field, and Laura helps Pa with harvesting and making hay. It soon becomes clear that Pa is worried about the coming winter, and when the Indian warns him that it will be a harsh one, Pa decides to move his family to town. Initially, Laura doesn't like the town at all. She and Carrie are sent to school. At school, she meets other children like Mary Power and Minnie Johnson, and Laura soon enjoys being with her friends. Soon, snowstorms begin, and the school is closed. Laura and Carrie experience a grueling journey back from school to town, when the snowstorm overtakes the children in the school. The family tries to survive on the little fuel and food they have. Pa teaches Laura to make haystacks, and they grind grain in a coffee grinder for daily bread. They celebrate Christmas with small gifts. The train can no longer reach the town, and the people are starving. Almanzo and Cap Garland venture out into the prairie to find a farmer with seed wheat to buy for the struggling town. They thus save the town. Finally, after months, the snowstorms stop. The family has survived the long winter, and the book ends with a Christmas celebration in May.

The book contains 33 chapters.

Illustrations:

The book features the beautiful illustrations of Garth Williams, drawings as we know them, full of life and feeling. Drawings in which the people seem as if they could just stand up. From Almanzo and Royal making pancakes to Laura helping Pa make haystacks. There are more illustrations in the English book than in the Dutch one. Drawings include: Laura with the water bottle in the hayfield, Laura packing the hay in the wagon, a little house on the prairie, Laura and Carrie in the tall grass and a heavily laden hay wagon in the field, the Ingalls family around the stove, Pa breaking ice from an animal's snout, Pa releasing a bird on the lakeshore, the Indian in the store, Ma and the girls hanging curtains in the windows, Laura and Carrie walking to school and Cap Garland catching the ball, Almanzo making pancakes, men on a handcart on the railroad tracks, Mary and Laura in a rocking chair by the window, people outside in the snow, Mary and Laura sewing at the table, Almanzo putting his seed wheat in the extra room, Ma bringing in frozen laundry, Pa and Laura making hay sticks, Mr. Foster with a rifle with Almanzo on horseback and the antelopes in the distance, the superintendent in the locomotive being dug up, Pa reading from the green book, Pa filling his bucket with seed wheat, Almanzo carving wood, an overturned sled full of bags, and a sled on the snow with two men beside it, Pa shaking his fist at the storm while the family sits around the stove, Royal helping Almanzo thaw his feet, the train arriving in town and a singing girl.

My opinion:

The same book as in Dutch, but in English. A nice book, but somber and with a heavy theme. It's nice that there are extra illustrations by Garth Williams.
