Zelf studeert ze in de avond. Almanzo blijft Laura ophalen, ook als ze heeft gezegd dat ze alleen met hem mee gaat om thuis te komen. Als Laura definitief weer thuis is, na 12 weken, wordt er gesleed in de hoofstraat. Niemand komt voor Laura, maar dan komt Almanzo toch. En Laura gaat graag met hem mee. Laura gaat weer naar school en komt tot de ontdekking dat ze nog steeds goed bij is met haar klas, maar dat iedereen een opstel heeft moeten schrijven. Laura begint er nog gauw aan en schrijft snel. Uiteindelijk heeft ze het heel goed gedaan. De meisjes in de klas hebben samen veel plezier, ook met de oudere jongens. Nellie Oleson is weer terug naar het Oosten en er is een nieuw meisje Florence. Laura’s nicht komt op bezoek met haar man. De sneeuw is gesmolten en Almanzo komt Laura halen voor een ritje in de buggy samen met Cap en Mary Power. Daarna vertrekt iedereen weer naar de claim. Laura krijgt een school in de buurt, waar ze maar aan 3 kinderen les hoeft te geven. Verder woont ze thuis. Ze koopt van het verdiende geld samen met Pa en Ma een orgel voor Mary. Laura werkt ook nog als naaister in de stad. Almanzo komt elke zondag Laura halen en dan rijden ze naar de Tweelingmeren of over de prairie. Almanzo koopt een nieuw stel paarden, die heel wild zijn. Laura rijdt toch met hem mee en uiteindelijk lukt het haar om Barnum te laten stappen. Almanzo en Laura gaan ook samen naar de zangschool en uiteindelijk vraagt Almanzo aan Laura of ze een verlovingsring wil en geeft hem een week later. Hierdoor kan Laura echter niet haar school afmaken, want ze heeft weer een nieuwe school om les te geven. Ze gaat inwonen bij Florence. Almanzo en Laura denken na over de bruiloft. Hoewel de winters vrij mild zijn, komen er in de zomers zware stormen. Mary komt in de zomer naar huis en praat met Laura en speelt orgel. Laat in de zomer komt er haast bij het huwelijk omdat er geen geld is voor een groot huwelijk, wat Eliza Jane wil gaan organiseren. Daarom trouwen Almanzo en Laura gewoon bij dominee Brown in huis. Daarna een bruiloftsmaal bij Pa en Ma en dan gaan ze wonen in het huis op de bomenclaim.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn van Garth Williams, altijd mooi. Deze editie heeft alles in kleur, wat ook heel mooi is, heel chique. De tekeningen zijn bekend, maar wel heel mooi.

In het boek staan plaatjes van Garth Williams. De bekende, warme, mooi tekeningen die net echt lijken en fijn zijn om naar te kijken. Er staan meer tekeningen in dan in de Nederlandse uitgave bekend zijn. De plaatjes die voorkomen zijn: Pa en Laura in de slee op de prairie, veel huisjes en bloemen, een lamp, Laura voor de klas kinderen, opkomende zon, de slee met paarden, Laura die het mes uit de vlecht trekt, Mevrouw Brewster met een mes in haar hand, Laura die lagen over elkaar aan trekt, sleerijden over de hoofdstraat, de brandende palissade uit het verhaal van oom Tom, Mary die haar kist aan het uitpakken is, Laura en nicht Alice die popcorn bakken, Almanzo en Laura in de buggy bij het meer, Laura krijgt een brief op het postkantoor, Het schoolgebouw, Laura in de buggy met op hol geslagen Barnum, Laura opent de deur voor Almanzo op kerstavond, een naaimachine, Laura aan het naaien, Almanzo en Laura worden getrouwd door Dominee Brown.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekregen in het pakket van Susan Duggan. Dit gaat niet om het verhaal, maar om de gekleurde plaatjes en die zijn de moeite waard.

Ik heb wel gekozen voor These happy golden Years omdat ik dat een van de mooiste boeken vind.

Summary:

This book is about the years in which Almanzo courts Laura. It covers quite a long period, about two or three years. First, it's about the Brewster school where Laura first teaches. Almanzo comes to pick her up every Friday, even once when it's actually too cold and the horses have to stop every two kilometers to let their nostrils thaw before they can continue. Laura mainly goes along so she can go home, because she's very homesick. And living with the Brewsters isn't fun at all. Mrs. Brewster is grumpy, unkind, and threatens her husband with a large knife at night. This frightens Laura. The school is small; three of the five students are older than Laura. For a week, Laura struggles with the oldest and smartest student and doesn't know how to get him to study. She gets tips from Ma and Pa in the weekend, and that seems to help. She studies in the evenings. Almanzo continues to pick up Laura, even though she's said she's only going with him to get home. When Laura finally returns home after 12 weeks, there's sledding on the main street. No one comes for Laura, but then Almanzo comes anyway. And Laura happily goes with him. Laura goes back to school and discovers that she's still keeping up with her class, but that everyone has to write an essay. Laura quickly gets started and writes quickly. In the end, she does very well. The girls in the class have a lot of fun together, even with the older boys. Nellie Oleson has returned East, and there's a new girl, Florence. Laura's cousin comes to visit with her husband. The snow has melted, and Almanzo comes to pick Laura up for a ride in the buggy with Cap and Mary Power. Afterward, everyone heads back to the claim. Laura gets a school nearby, where she only has to teach three children. She lives at home otherwise. With the money she earned, she and Ma and Pa buy an organ for Mary. Laura also works as a seamstress in town. Almanzo comes to pick Laura up every Sunday, and they ride to the Twin Lakes or across the prairie. Almanzo buys a new pair of horses, which are very wild. Laura rides with him anyway, and eventually manages to get Barnum to walk. Almanzo and Laura also attend singing school together, and eventually, Almanzo asks Laura if she wants an engagement ring and gives it a week later. Because of this, Laura can't finish school, as she has a new school to teach at. She moves in with Florence. Almanzo and Laura consider the wedding. Although the winters are relatively mild, heavy storms occur in the summers. Mary comes home in the summer and talks to Laura and plays the organ. Late in the summer, the wedding becomes urgent because there's no money for a large wedding, which Eliza Jane wants to organize. So, Almanzo and Laura simply get married at Reverend Brown's house. Afterward, they have a wedding feast at Ma and Pa's, and then they move into the house on the tree claim.

Drawings:

The drawings are by Garth Williams, always beautiful. This edition has everything in color, which is also very nice, very chic. The drawings are familiar, but also very beautiful.

The book features images by Garth Williams. His familiar, warm, beautiful drawings that look so real and are lovely to look at. There are more drawings than are available in the Dutch edition. The pictures are: Pa and Laura in the sleigh on the prairie, lots of houses and flowers, a lamp, Laura in front of the children, the rising sun, the sleigh with horses, Laura pulling the knife out of the braid, Mrs. Brewster with a knife in her hand, Laura layering up, a sleigh ride on Main Street, the burning stockade from Uncle Tom's story, Mary unpacking her coffin, Laura and Cousin Alice making popcorn, Almanzo and Laura in the buggy by the lake, Laura receiving a letter at the post office, The schoolhouse, Laura in the buggy with Barnum gone wild, Laura opening the door for Almanzo on Christmas Eve, a sewing machine, Laura sewing, Almanzo and Laura being married by Reverend Brown.

My opinion:

Received this book in a Susan Duggan package. This isn't about the story, but about the colorful pictures, and they are worth it. I chose These Happy Golden Years because I think it is one of the most beautiful books in the series.
