Let Op: SPOILER
In dit boek begint Caroline als lerares op de school in
Concord. Ze geeft eerst het zomertermijn les. Haar zus Eliza zit bij haar in de
klas en verder allemaal makkelijke kinderen. Ze vindt het heerlijk om les te
geven en zelfs gemakkelijk. Wel is er een jongen, John Friday, waar al snel bij
blijkt dat hij met zijn 8 jaar nog nooit op school is geweest. Caroline helpt
hem met studeren en leren en hij waardeert haar zeer. Uiteindelijk zorgt ze er
ook nog voor dat hij thuis goed geholpen wordt. Op 4 juli heeft iedereen een
dag vrij en gaat naar Concord voor het feest. Het is voor het eerst dat
Caroline Charles weer ziet, die de hele zomer met zijn broer op een eigen stuk
land heeft gewerkt. Charles speelt heel mooi op de viool en Caroline weet het
wel te waarderen. In de pauzes op school zit Caroline met haar eigen
vriendinnen, Polly Ingalls en Maddy en nog een paar. Na de pauze is ze weer hun
lerares. Caroline probeert om John zoveel mogelijk te helpen en ze is heel blij
als dat lukt. De zomer is erg droog en dat is slecht voor de oogst. Caroline
besluit om hemden te gaan naaien, om zo toch geld te verdienen. Moeder is blij
met de extra inkomsten. En hoewel de oogst niet zo goed is als vorig jaar, is
er toch voldoende geld. Caroline geeft ook les tijdens de herfsttermijn op
school. In het begin lijkt het niet zo goed te gaan, omdat er een paar oudere
en moeilijkere jongens in de klas zitten. Toch weet Caroline deze jongens ten
goede te keren en komt deze termijn ook weer goed. Dan komt Caroline Charles
weer eens tegen als ze naar huis loopt. Hij begeleidt haar naar huis en ze
praten fijn samen. Caroline vertelt dat ze weer shirts gaat naaien en Charles
vertelt dat hij net een boek heeft gekocht en dat hij naar het Westen wil.
Caroline maakt hem heel duidelijk dat ze absoluut geen behoefte voelt om naar
het vrije Westen te trekken waar alles onzeker en gevaarlijk is. Van liefde is
geen sprake, maar langzaam wordt wel duidelijk dat Caroline steeds meer om
Charles begint te geven. Nu het najaar is, is het tijd om de oogst samen binnen
te brengen. In heel Concord wordt nog steeds samen gewerkt. De jongeren gaan
allemaal samen naar Spivey. Pa en Moeder en Lottie blijven thuis omdat Pa voelt
dat er slecht weer en sneeuw op komst is. De jongens en meiden gaan samen. Ter plaatse
blijken er veel vrienden te zijn en ook de familie Ingalls is er. Caroline komt
te zitten naast de andere leraar Mr. Linney, maar eigenlijk vindt ze het
helemaal geen leuke man. Polly Ingalls zit langs Henry en langzaam worden er
meer paartjes gevormd. Nadat de mais allemaal is gesplitst, is het tijd voor
een dansfeest. Charles is de violist en al snel danst iedereen. Ook Caroline
zit niet stil. Hoewel er nog even twijfel is geweest over het weer, wordt de
verwachtte sneeuw vergeten en geniet iedereen van het feest. Pas als blijkt dat
niemand meer naar huis kan vanwege erge sneeuwval, tempert het feest en maakt
iedereen alles klaar om in de schuur te slapen. Pas de volgende dag durven de
jongens het aan om naar huis te gaan. Caroline voelt zich schuldig dat ze niet
beter heeft opgelet. De reis is koud. Ze gaan samen met de familie Ingalls.
Onderweg worden ze weer overvallen door een sneeuwbui en iedereen is verkleumd
als ze bij het huis van Ingalls aankomen. Daar warmen ze op en blijven tot de
bui voorbij is. Ook al is het laat, toch besluiten ze nog naar huis te gaan.
Moeder en Pa zijn wel boos. Hierna worden er toch meer paartjes duidelijk zoals
mr Linney en Maddy, Polly en Henry. Martha en Charlie waren al verloofd.
Caroline heeft geen behoefte aan de liefde. Ze gaat weer lesgeven tijdens de
wintertermijn. Deze keer komen ook de grootste jongens naar school en al meteen
zorgt een van de jongens voor grote moeilijkheden. Het is pittig voor Caroline
en ze komt er zelfs toe om de jongen van school te sturen. De vader van de
jongen is hier erg boos over, maar gelukkig staat het schoolbestuur achter
Caroline. Als het lente wordt, is Caroline blij als de schooltermijn voorbij
is. Dan ontmoet ze Charles weer en hij vertelt van zijn plannen om naar het
Westen te gaan. Hij vraagt aan Caroline of ze mee wil, maar ze zegt duidelijk
nee. Daarna twijfelt ze enorm, ze ontdekt uiteindelijk dat ze toch van Charles
houdt en weet niet of ze er goed aan heeft gedaan om niet met hem mee te gaan.
Inmiddels worden er nogal wat huwelijken om haar heen gesloten. Als ze dan
eindelijk Charles weer ziet, is ze niet zeker hoe ze zich tegenover hem moet
gedragen. Hij neemt haar mee naar een plekje in het bos en vertelt haar dat hij
daar een huis wil bouwen, als Caroline er met hem wil wonen. Hij heeft besloten
nog niet naar het Westen te reizen.
Tekeningen:
Er staan tekeningen bij het
begin van elk hoofdstuk, vrij algemene tekeningen. Verder staan er ook een
aantal pagina-grootte tekeningen in het boek. Vrij abstract, niet heel mooi of
levendig. Tekeningen in het boek zijn: Charles die viool speelt, Caroline met
een stok in haar hand tegenover de grote jongens, de ossen die door de sneeuw
lopen voor een wagen vol jongeren en een picknickmand. Kleine plaatjes aan het
begin van een hoofdstuk zijn bijvoorbeeld: een eekhoorn, een haan,een
schoolgebouw, een schoolbel, een Amerikaanse vlag, een kikker, kadootjes voor
een schooljuf aan het einde van een termijn, een maiskolf, een viool, een poppetje
van maisbladeren, bekers met warme drank, een slee, een aanwijsstok, een gebroken
potje, een uil en een stuk land met boomstronken.
Het laatste deel van de
Caroline-serie. Beetje ver af van de werkelijkheid, maar wel geinig om te
lezen. Het verhaal is goed geschreven en daarom blijf je wel lezen, maar het
lijkt niet echt op de waarheid te berusten zoals het werkelijk is gegaan. Omdat
ik een grote fan ben van alles van Laura Ingalls Wilder kon dit boek in mijn verzameling
niet ontbreken. Maar het is niet dat je dit boek moet hebben omdat je anders
iets mist. Ik heb de Caroline serie compleet.

In this book Caroline starts
as a teacher at the school in Concord. She teaches summer term first. Her
sister Eliza is in her class and otherwise all easy children. She loves to
teach and it is easy. However, there is a boy, John Friday, who soon finds out that
he has never been to school at the age of 8. Caroline helps him study and learn
and he appreciates her very much. In the end, she also ensures that he is well
helped at home. On the 4th of July, everyone has the day off and heads to
Concord for the party. It is the first time that Caroline sees Charles again,
who has worked all summer with his brother on his own piece of land. Charles
plays the violin very nicely and Caroline knows how to appreciate it. During
recess at school, Caroline sits with her own friends, Polly Ingalls and Maddy
and a few more. After the break she is their teacher again. Caroline tries to
help John as much as possible and she is very happy when she succeeds. The
summer is very dry and that is bad for the harvest. Caroline decides to sew
shirts in order to earn money. Mother is happy with the extra income. And
although the harvest is not as good as last year, there is still enough money.
Caroline also teaches during the fall term at the school. Things don't seem to
be going so well at first, because there are a few older and more difficult
boys in the class. Nevertheless, Caroline knows how to turn these guys around
and this term will also be fine. Then Caroline runs into Charles again on her
way home. He escorts her home and they talk nicely together. Caroline says
she's going back to sewing shirts and Charles says he just bought a book and he
wants to go West. Caroline makes it very clear to him that she feels absolutely
no need to go to the free West where everything is uncertain and dangerous.
There is no question of love, but it slowly becomes clear that Caroline is
starting to care more and more about Charles. Now that autumn is here, it's
time to bring in the harvest together. Collaboration continues throughout
Concord. The youngsters all go to Spivey together. Dad and Mom and Lottie stay
at home because Dad senses that bad weather and snow is coming. The boys and
girls go together. There appear to be many friends on site and the Ingalls
family is also there. Caroline gets seated next to the other teacher Mr.
Linney, but actually she doesn't like the man at all. Polly Ingalls sits next
to Henry and slowly more pairs are formed. After the corn has all been split,
it's time for a dance party. Charles is the violinist and soon everyone is
dancing. Caroline isn't sitting still either. Although there has been some
doubt about the weather, the expected snow is forgotten and everyone enjoys the
party. Only when it turns out that no one can go home due to heavy snowfall,
does the party temper and everyone prepares to sleep in the shed. Only the next
day do the boys dare to go home. Caroline feels guilty for not paying more
attention. The journey is cold. They go with the Ingalls family. On the way,
they are caught in a snowstorm again and everyone is numb when they arrive at
Ingalls' house. There they warm up and stay until the storm is over. Even
though it is late, they still decide to go home. Mom and Dad are angry. After
this, more couples become clear such as Mr Linney and Maddy, Polly and Henry.
Martha and Charlie were already engaged. Caroline doesn't need love. She will
return to teaching during the winter term. This time the tallest boys also come
to school and immediately one of the boys causes great difficulties. It's spicy
for Caroline and she even gets to expel the boy from school. The boy's father
is very angry about this, but luckily the school board is behind Caroline. When
spring comes, Caroline is happy when school term is over. Then she meets
Charles again and he tells of his plans to go West. He asks Caroline if she
wants to come along, but she clearly says no. After that she has a lot of
doubts, she eventually discovers that she loves Charles after all and doesn't
know if she did the right thing not to go with him. There are now quite a few
marriages around her. When she finally sees Charles again, she isn't sure how
to behave towards him. He takes her to a place in the woods and tells her that
he wants to build a house there, if Caroline wants to live there with him. He has
decided not to travel to the West yet.
Drawings:
There are drawings at the
beginning of each chapter, fairly common drawings. There are also a number of
page-size drawings in the book. Quite abstract, not very beautiful or lively.
Drawings in the book are: Charles playing the violin, Caroline with a stick in
her hand facing the big boys, the oxen walking through the snow in front of a
wagon full of youths and a picnic basket. Small pictures at the beginning of a
chapter include: a squirrel, a rooster, a schoolhouse, a school bell, an
American flag, a frog, gifts for a schoolteacher at the end of term, a corncob,
a violin, a puppet of corn leaves, cups with hot drink, a sled, a pointer, a
broken jar, an owl and a piece of land with tree stumps.
Own opinion:
The last part of the Caroline
series. A bit far from reality, but fun to read. The story is well written and
that's why you keep reading, but it doesn't really seem to be based on the
truth as it really happened. Because I am a big fan of everything by Laura
Ingalls Wilder, this book could not be missing in my collection. But it's not
that you have to have this book because you're missing out otherwise. I have
completed the Caroline series.
