Alle kersthoofdstukken zijn voor dit boek gebruikt.
Bij "Farmer Boy" wordt kerstmis voorbereid in het grote huis. Er
wordt snoep gemaakt, eten gekookt. De kinderen Wilder zijn veel te vroeg wakker
en dolblij met alle kadootjes. Dan waarschuwt vader dat ze misschien wel heel
vroeg op zijn... Iedereen staat op en er is tijd genoeg om van de kadootjes te genieten.
Er komt familie op bezoek en Almanzo speelt met zijn neven. Hij maakt ruzie in
de paardenstal. Na een uitgebreide maaltijd gaat de familie weer naar huis en
is kerstmis voorbij.
Uit "By The Shores of Silver Lake" wordt het verhaal vertelt van de
kerst in het Landmetershuis. Op kerstavond is de familie Ingalls aan het zingen
als er ineens van buiten gezang klinkt. Het blijken meneer en mevrouw Boost te
zijn die in het huis worden opgenomen. De volgende ochtend is kerstochtend en
zijn er kadootjes voor iedereen. Ook voor meneer en mevrouw Boost! Het is een
gezellige dag en ze zingen samen en kijken naar kleine Grace in haar mooie
jasje van zwanenbont.
In "Long Winter" komt kerst onverwacht. Iedereen is druk bezig met de
treinen die niet rijden. Hoewel er een brief is gekomen van Dominee Alden dat
een kerstvat onderweg is, verwacht ma niet dat vat echt op tijd zal komen. Toch
is er op kerstochtend voor iedereen een (zelfgemaakt) kadootje. Tevens is er
een lekkere maaltijd.
Gelukkig komt het kerstvat aan met een van de eerste treinen in mei, na de
lange winter. De familie Ingalls nodigt de familie Boost uit voor een laat
kerstfeest.
In het laatste verhaal uit "These happy golden Years" begint de kerst
met voorbereidingen voor een kerst thuis ipv in de kerk omdat er toch sneeuw op
komst is. Almanzo is naar zijn familie en er komen steeds minder brieven, dus
Laura maakt zich een beetje zorgen. Dan staat ineens Almanzo op de stoep om de
kerstavond met het gezin mee te vieren. Laura wordt er verlegen van, maar
krijgt van Almanzo een hele mooie speld cadeau.
Tekeningen:
De plaatjes in het boek zijn
allemaal bekende plaatjes van Garth Williams. Toegevoegde waarde is dat alle
plaatjes zijn ingekleurd.
Zeer mooi boek, deel 2 van de
kersthoofdstukken. De verhalen zijn bekend, maar de gekleurde plaatjes en
chique uitgave maken het boek bijzonder.

At Farmer Boy, Christmas is
being prepared in the big house. Candy is made, food is cooked. The Wilder
children wake up way too early and are overjoyed with all the presents. Then
father warns that they might be up very early... Everyone gets up and there is
time enough to enjoy the presents. Family comes to visit and Almanzo plays with
his cousins. He argues in the stable. After a sumptuous meal, the family
returns home and Christmas is over.
"By The Shores of Silver
Lake" tells the story of Christmas at the Land Surveyor's House. On
Christmas Eve, the Ingalls family is singing when suddenly singing comes from
outside. It turns out to be Mr. and Mrs. Boost who are taken into the house.
The next morning is Christmas morning and there are presents for everyone. Also
for Mr and Mrs Boost! It's a nice day and they sing together and look at little
Grace in her beautiful swan fur jacket.
In "Long Winter"
Christmas comes unexpectedly. Everyone is busy with the trains that are not
running. Although a letter has arrived from Reverend Alden that a Christmas
barrel is on its way, Mom doesn't expect the barrel to really arrive on time.
Nevertheless, there is a (homemade) present for everyone on Christmas morning.
There is also a nice meal.
Fortunately, the Christmas
barrel arrives with one of the first trains in May, after the long winter. The
Ingalls family invites the Boost family to a belated Christmas party.
In the last story from
"These happy golden Years" Christmas starts with preparations for a
Christmas at home instead of at church because snow is coming anyway. Almanzo
has gone to his family and the letters are getting less and less, so Laura is a
little worried. Then suddenly Almanzo is on the doorstep to celebrate Christmas
Eve with the family. Laura becomes shy, but receives a very nice pin from
Almanzo as a present.
Drawings:
The pictures in the book are
all well-known pictures of Garth Williams. Added value is that all pictures are
colored.
Own opinion:
Very nice book, part 2 of the
Christmas chapters. The stories are well known, but the colored pictures and
chic edition make the book special.
