Samenvatting:

Dit boek gaat over dat Mary Ingalls naar school in Iowa gaat. In het begin wordt ze nog weggebracht door haar ouders en daar heeft ze steun aan. Ze gaat voor het eerst naar de school voor blinden. Nieuwe geluiden, nieuwe plaatsen en alles onbekend. Mary krijgt een kamer toegewezen bij een paar andere meisjes. Gelukkig lijken het aardige meisjes te zijn. Dan moet Mary een test doen om te kijken of ze kan worden toegelaten. Gelukkig haalt ze de test. Pa en Ma gaan weer naar huis. De indeling op school is streng en gevuld met lessen en dingen om te leren. Mary moet veel leren. Ze is blij als er bericht van thuis komt. Niet iedereen op school is even aardig, al is er een aardige jongen in het instituut om te helpen. Zijn (blinde) zus is echter niet zo aardig voor Mary. Buiten de school mag in de tuin gewandeld worden. Mary gaat wandelen met het onaardige meisje Mattie. Er steekt een storm op en in plaats van Mary te helpen, laat Mattie haar staan. Gelukkig krijgt ze hulp van de aardige jongen Ben die haar nat, maar veilig, weer in school brengt. Langzaamaan raakt Mary gewend op school en rond kerst voelt ze zich er toch wel thuis.

Eigen mening:

Ik vraag me af hoeveel er werkelijk van klopt van het verhaal, het grootste deel is verzonnen, denk ik. Het leest wel lekker en het is wel leuk, maar alles speelt zich af in een vrij korte periode en is nogal gedramatiseerd.

Summary:

This book is about Mary Ingalls going to school in Iowa. In the beginning, she is taken away by her parents and she has support from them. She goes to the school for the blind for the first time. New sounds, new places and everything unknown. Mary is assigned a room with a few other girls. Fortunately, they seem to be nice girls. Then Mary has to take a test to see if she can be admitted. Fortunately, she passes the test. Pa and Ma go home again. The school schedule is strict and filled with lessons and things to learn. Mary has a lot to learn. She is happy when news comes from home. Not everyone at school is equally nice, although there is a nice boy in the institute to help. However, his (blind) sister is not so nice to Mary. Outside the school, walking in the garden is allowed. Mary goes for a walk with the unpleasant girl Mattie. A storm comes up and instead of helping Mary, Mattie leaves her standing. Fortunately, she gets help from the nice boy Ben who brings her back to school wet, but safe. Mary slowly gets used to school and around Christmas she feels at home there.

Own opinion:

I wonder how much of the story is actually true, most of it is made up, I think. It is a nice read and it is fun, but everything takes place in a relatively short period and is rather dramatized.
