Het verhaal vertelt grofweg over de zomerse dagen in het Grote Bos. Over wat ze allemaal doen. Over dat Laura en Mary bij Mevrouw Peterson gaan kijken. Over Pa die werkt op het land en Ma die eieren zoekt. Over dat ze afwassen en dat Pa een honingboom vindt. Dat Ma kaas maakt. En dat het gezin bezoek krijgt. En dat Laura en Mary spelen voor de blokhut.

Tekeningen:

Een dun kinderboekje met mooie tekeningen. Dit boekje is geïllustreerd door Renée Graef. Er is geprobeerd om in de trant van Garth Williams te tekenen met toestemming van Garth Williams. Enkele tekeningen zijn ook herkenbaar uit de boeken, zoals dat Ma kaas maakt en Laura die speelt met Clarence Huleatt. De tekeningen zijn in kleur. Het eerste plaatje is van een meisje dat danst in het bos en een bij bij een bloem. Dan een tekening van Mary en Laura die met hun poppen spelen onder de bomen in de tuin van de blokhut. Ma loopt met Carrie door het gras en Jack springt rond. Pa staat bij de blokhut. Dan een tekening van Pa aan het werk op het veld, op de achtergrond zwaait een meisje. Dan een tekening van Ma die de kippen voert en Mary en Laura rapen eieren in het hok. Dan een tekening van Laura en Clarence die in een boom klimmen, terwijl onder de boom Mary en een meisje netjes wandelen. Dan een tekening van Mary en Laura die onder de bomen door lopen. Het volgende plaatje is van Mevrouw Peterson die de meisjes ieder een koekje geeft in haar mooie huis. Het volgende plaatje is van Mary en Laura die ieder hun koekje op eten. Dan volgt een tekening van twee koeien in de wei met op de achtergrond een schuur waar Pa en Ma bezig zijn. Vervolgens is Ma kaas aan het maken en wordt geholpen door Laura en Mary. Op het volgende plaatje haalt Pa raten met honing uit de wagen en Mary en Laura kijken in de emmers. Dan zie je Pa die met emmers op weg is naar een boom waar bijen rondom zwermen. Dan zie je de bijenboom op de voorgrond en Pa die er naar staat te kijken. De volgende tekening is van Ma die de afwas staat te doen en Mary en Laura die afdrogen. Carrie zit in een wiegje te spelen met Jack. Dan volgt een tekening van de meisjes in bed. De laatste tekening is van de blokhut in het donker, omgeven door vuurvliegjes.

Eigen mening:

Dit boekje is het bekende verhaal een beetje samengevat, voor het verhaal hoef je het niet te hebben. Maar het is verder interessant voor de tekeningen. Zeer gedetailleerd, zeer lieflijk. De tekeningen zijn met veel gevoel en erg mooi gemaakt.

Drawings:

A thin children's book with beautiful drawings. This book is illustrated by Renée Graef. An attempt was made to draw in the style of Garth Williams with permission from Garth Williams. Some drawings are also recognizable from the books, such as Ma making cheese and Laura playing with Clarence Huleatt. The drawings are in color. The first picture is of a girl dancing in the woods and a bee by a flower. Then a drawing of Mary and Laura playing with their dolls under the trees in the garden of the log cabin. Ma walks with Carrie through the grass and Jack jumps around. Pa stands by the log cabin. Then a drawing of Pa working in the field, in the background a girl is waving. Then a drawing of Ma feeding the chickens and Mary and Laura collecting eggs in the coop. Then a drawing of Laura and Clarence climbing a tree, while under the tree Mary and a girl are walking nicely. Then a drawing of Mary and Laura walking under the trees. The next picture is of Mrs. Peterson giving each of the girls a cookie in her beautiful house. The next picture is of Mary and Laura each eating their cookie. Then follows a drawing of two cows in the meadow with in the background a barn where Pa and Ma are working. Then Ma is making cheese and is helped by Laura and Mary. In the next picture Pa is getting honey buckets from the wagon and Mary and Laura are looking into the buckets. Then you see Pa who is on his way with buckets to a tree where bees are swarming. Then you see the bee tree in the foreground and Pa who is standing there looking at it. The next picture is of Ma who is washing the dishes and Mary and Laura who are drying them. Carrie is playing in a cradle with Jack. Then follows a drawing of the girls in bed. The last drawing is of the log cabin in the dark, surrounded by fireflies.

Own opinion:

This book is the well-known story summarized a bit, you don't need it for the story. But it is also interesting for the drawings. Very detailed, very sweet. The drawings are made with a lot of feeling and very beautifully.

Het verhaal gaat over de “suikersneeuw”. Dat er sneeuw valt net als Laura denkt dat ze weer buiten kan spelen. Pa gaat grootvader helpen met het maken van de suiker uit het sap van de bomen. Hij komt thuis met siroop en een zoet koekje voor Laura en Mary.

Tekeningen:

Dit is een dun kinderboekje. De tekeningen zijn gemaakt door Doris Ettlinger. De tekeningen zijn erg mooi en levensecht. Ook hiervoor is weer toestemming gevraagd aan Garth Williams. Het zijn mooie kleurentekeningen. De tekeningen zijn oa van dat de meisjes en Ma spelen met papieren poppen, terwijl Pa op de achtergrond iets zit te snijden en dat Laura proeft van de “suikersneeuw”, terwijl de kat zijn pootjes aflikt. Van Laura die een pop vast houdt. Van Laura die uit het raam van de besneeuwde blokhut kijkt, zowel van binnen als van buiten gezien. Dan een tekening van Ma die de meisjes instopt in bed. En van Pa die binnen komt en de sneeuw van zijn voeten stampje terwijl Laura en Carrie toekijken. Dan een tekening van Pa die Mary en Laura een pakje geeft, je ziet Ma met een emmer met vloeistof staan. Dan proeft Laura een koekje, Jack kijkt toe. Dan volgt een tekening van Mary en Laura die cake eten, de kat likt een schoteltje leeg. Vervolgens een tekening van Pa met de meisjes op schoot aan het vertellen en Ma zit te naaien bij het vuur. Dan een tekening van grootvader dit een gat boort in een boom en overal om hem heen staan emmers onder de bomen. Een tekening van grootvader die de sap schept in de grote ketel op het vuur en nogmaals een tekening van Pa met Laura en Mary op schoot voor het vuur. De laatste tekening is van Pa die viool speelt voor de haard, terwijl Ma de meisjes in bed stopt.

Eigen mening:

Dit boekje gaat niet om het verhaal, want dat is bekend, maar het gaat om de tekeningen. Er is weinig verschil tussen de tekeningen van Doris Ettlinger of Renée Graef. Ze zijn allemaal mooi, lieflijk en gedetailleerd. De tekeningen zijn heerlijk om naar te kijken.

Summary:

Drawings:

This is a thin children's book. The drawings were made by Doris Ettlinger. The drawings are very beautiful and lifelike. Permission was also requested from Garth Williams for this. They are beautiful color drawings. The drawings include the girls and Ma playing with paper dolls, while Pa is cutting something in the background and Laura tasting the “sugar snow”, while the cat licks its paws. Of Laura holding a doll. Of Laura looking out of the window of the snowy log cabin, seen from both inside and outside. Then a drawing of Ma tucking the girls into bed. And of Pa coming in and stamping the snow off his feet while Laura and Carrie watch. Then a drawing of Pa giving Mary and Laura a package, you see Ma standing with a bucket of liquid. Then Laura tastes a cookie, Jack looks at her. Then follows a drawing of Mary and Laura eating cake, the cat licking a saucer empty. Then a drawing of Pa with the girls on his lap telling a story and Ma is sewing by the fire. Then a drawing of grandfather drilling a hole in a tree and all around him are buckets under the trees. A drawing of grandfather scooping the juice into the big kettle on the fire and again a drawing of Pa with Laura and Mary on his lap in front of the fire. The last drawing is of Pa playing the violin in front of the hearth, while Ma tucks the girls into bed.

Own opinion:

This book is not about the story, because that is well-known, but about the drawings. There is little difference between the drawings of Doris Ettlinger or Renée Graef. They are all beautiful, sweet and detailed. The drawings are wonderful to look at.

Dan volgt een hele korte biografie over Laura Ingalls Wilder. Daarna dus alle samengevatte 26 hoofdstukken. Het boekje eindigt met de verschillende thema’s uit het kleine huis op de prairie zoals: de pioneer spirit, buren, zelfvoorzienendheid en dagelijkse vreugde. Dan volgt een historisch overzicht, waarin kort de frontier aan bod komt en daarna de tijd waarin het boek werd uitgegeven, de grote depressie. Het boekje eindigt met een conclusie over het boek het kleine huis op de prairie.

Aan het eind van het boekje wordt kort ingegaan op de televisieserie Kleine huis op de prairie.

Tekeningen:

Er staan geen tekeningen in het boek. Alleen bij de biografie een hand met een brief en op het einde staat een microfoon getekend.

Eigen mening:

Het is maar een heel dun boekje. De informatie is summier. De samenvatting van de hoofdstukken is goed. Ik denk dat je als leerkracht zelf op zoek moet naar meer achtergrond en als je het boek leest, is dit niet perse een aanvulling.

Then follows a very short biography about Laura Ingalls Wilder. Then follows all 26 summarized chapters. The book ends with the various themes from Little House on the Prairie such as: the pioneer spirit, neighbors, self-sufficiency and daily joy. Then follows a historical overview, in which the frontier is briefly discussed and then the time in which the book was published, the Great Depression. The book ends with a conclusion about the book Little House on the Prairie.

At the end of the book, the television series Little House on the Prairie is briefly discussed.

Drawings:

There are no drawings in the book. Only in the biography a hand with a letter and at the end a microphone is drawn.

Own opinion:

It is only a very thin book. The information is brief. The summary of the chapters is good. I think that as a teacher you have to look for more background yourself and if you read the book, this is not necessarily a supplement.

Dit hoofdstuk-boekje bevat 9 hoofdstukken uit de boeken over Laura.
1. Naar school
Ma heeft gezegd dat Mary en Laura naar school kunnen nu ze dichtbij de stad langs de rivier wonen. Laura wil eigenlijk niet. Ze helpt Pa met een klusje (visval maken) en bespreekt met hem waarom ze naar school moet.
2. De eerste dag
Laura vindt de eerste schooldag heel spannend. Ma helpt de meisjes met alles en ze moeten naar school lopen. Onderweg maken ze een beetje ruzie, omdat Mary zegt dat Laura het ook spannend vind en Laura stoer doet, maar ze weten allebei dat dat niet zo is. Ze lopen op het geluid af van de spelende kinderen.
3. P-A-T Pat
Dan begint de school. Op het plein heeft Laura al wat meisjes leren kennen. Christy en Nellie. Zij en Mary melden zich aan bij de juf. Als Laura nog niet blijkt te kunnen lezen, mag ze vooraan in het boek beginnen. Op het eind van de dag kan ze al enkele woordjes lezen.
4. De griffel voor de lei
Mary en Laura hebben een lei nodig voor school. Pa geeft hen geld en ze kopen de lei bij de winkel van Oleson. Nellie en Willie kijken toe en eten snoep, maar delen niet uit. De meisjes blijken ook een griffel nodig te hebben, maar daar hebben ze geen geld voor. Ze besluiten om hun eigen geld bij elkaar te leggen en kopen in een andere winkel de griffel.
5. Oom John
Iedere pauze spelen de meisjes wat Nellie wil, maar op een dag is Laura haar voor en verzint iets anders. De andere meisjes vallen Laura bij en Nellie loopt boos weg.
6. Een andere eerste dag
Inmiddels woont de familie Ingalls in de stad. Laura en Carrie gaan samen naar de nieuwe school. Dat is toch weer spannend. Bij het aankleden trekt Carrie een knoop van haar schoen. Gelukkig vind Ma de knoop en helpt Carrie. Ze lopen naar school en Cap Garland gooit de bal naar Laura die hem vangt. Maar ze wil niet meespelen, want dat is niet damesachtig. Laura ontmoet nieuwe vriendinnen.
7. De nieuwe school
Dit hoofdstuk gaat over de nieuwe school en hoe deze er uit ziet. Wie de juf is en de andere kinderen in de school in de stad.
8. De sneeuwstorm
Terwijl alle kinderen op school zitten, breekt er een sneeuwstorm los. Iemand uit de stad komt naar school om de kinderen en juf te halen. Terwijl Laura met Carrie de storm in gaat, merkt ze dat Cap Garland een andere kant op gaat. Ze durft Cap niet te volgen, omdat ze Carrie vast heeft. Net op het laatste moment botst Laura tegen een muur van een huis aan. Ze vinden net op tijd de huizen van de stad. Iedereen is blij als de kinderen weer thuis zijn.
9. Thuis studeren
De sneeuwstormen razen om het huis. Naar school gaan lukt niet meer. Iedere dag proberen Laura en Carrie, samen met Mary, te studeren, maar het wordt steeds moeilijker. Dan bedenkt Ma dat ze allemaal iets wat ze geleerd hebben op kunnen zeggen.

Tekeningen:

Het eerste plaatje is een schattig plaatje van Pa en Laura die de visval zetten onder de waterval. Laura zit er enthousiast bij op een steen, terwijl Pa geknield toe zit te kijken. Bij het volgende hoofdstuk staat Laura op de voorgrond, met haar zonnehoed zwierend aan de banden in haar hand. Mary loopt veel rustiger achter haar. Dan zitten Laura en Mary allebei in de schoolbank, Laura met bungelende voeten. Het volgende plaatje is van Mary en Laura die een lei kopen in de winkel van Oleson, terwijl Nellie en Willie staan te snoepen. Bij het volgende hoofdstuk is het plaatje van een mokkende Nellie op de voorgrond en daarachter een kring met meisjes met 1 kind in het midden. Weer het volgende plaatje is van Laura en Carrie die zich klaarmaken om naar school te gaan. De ene strikt een lint in haar vlecht, de andere trekt haar schoenen aan, zittend op een stoel. Bij hoofdstuk 7 staan Laura en Carrie winters ingepakt in de deuropening van de nieuwe school, met banken op de voorgrond. In het hoofdstuk van de sneeuwstorm zie je Laura en Carrie van achter, als donkere schimmen. Om hen heen sneeuwt het. Je ziet vage contouren van de stad. In het laatste hoofdstuk is een klein plaatje van Mary met Grace op schoot voor de kachel en Laura opzij van de kachel met een boek op schoot.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje en het gaat mij niet om het verhalen, want dat komt rechtstreeks uit de boeken, maar om de tekeningen van Renée Graef. En die zijn leuk en lief.

Summary:

This chapter book contains 9 chapters from the books about Laura.

1. Going to school

Ma has said that Mary and Laura can go to school now that they live close to town along the river. Laura doesn't really want to. She helps Pa with a job (making a fishing trap) and discusses with him why she has to go to school.

2. The first day

Laura finds the first day of school very exciting. Ma helps the girls with everything and they have to walk to school. On the way they argue a bit, because Mary says that Laura also finds it exciting and Laura is acting tough, but they both know that that is not true. They walk towards the sound of the children playing.

3. P-A-T Pat

Then school starts. Laura has already met some girls on the playground. Christy and Nellie. She and Mary register with the teacher. If Laura cannot read yet, she can start at the beginning of the book. At the end of the day she can already read a few words.

4. The slate pencil

Mary and Laura need a slate for school. Pa gives them money and they buy the slate at Oleson's store. Nellie and Willie watch and eat candy, but don't give out. The girls also need a slate pencil, but they don't have any money for it. They decide to put their own money together and buy the slate pencil at another store.

5. Uncle John

Every recess the girls play what Nellie wants, but one day Laura beats her and comes up with something else. The other girls join Laura and Nellie walks away angrily.

6. Another first day

In the meantime the Ingalls family lives in the city. Laura and Carrie go to the new school together. That's exciting again. While getting dressed Carrie pulls a button off her shoe. Luckily Ma finds the button and helps Carrie. They walk to school and Cap Garland throws the ball to Laura, who catches it. But she doesn't want to play along, because that's not ladylike. Laura meets new friends.

7. The new school

This chapter is about the new school and what it looks like. Who the teacher is and the other children in the school in the city.

8. The blizzard

While all the children are in school, a blizzard starts. Someone from the city comes to the school to pick up the children and the teacher. While Laura goes into the storm with Carrie, she notices that Cap Garland is going in a different direction. She doesn't dare to follow Cap, because she has Carrie. Just at the last moment, Laura bumps into a wall of a house. They find the houses of town just in time. Everyone is happy when the children are back home.

9. Studying at home

The blizzards rage around the house. Going to school is no longer possible. Every day Laura and Carrie, together with Mary, try to study, but it gets harder and harder. Then Ma thinks that they can all say something they have learned.

Drawings:

The first picture is a cute picture of Pa and Laura setting the fish trap under the waterfall. Laura is sitting excitedly on a rock, while Pa kneels down and watches. In the next chapter, Laura is in the foreground, her sun hat swinging from the straps in her hand. Mary walks much more calmly behind her. Then Laura and Mary are both sitting in the school desk, Laura with her feet dangling. The next picture is of Mary and Laura buying a slate at Oleson's, while Nellie and Willie are snacking. In the next chapter, the picture is of a sulking Nellie in the foreground and behind her a circle of girls with 1 child in the middle. The next picture is of Laura and Carrie getting ready for school. One is tying a ribbon in her braid, the other is putting on her shoes, sitting on a chair. In chapter 7, Laura and Carrie are standing in the doorway of the new school, wrapped up in winterdress with desks in the foreground. In the chapter of the blizzard you see Laura and Carrie from behind, like dark shadows. It is snowing around them. You see vague contours others. In the last chapter there is a small picture of Mary with Grace on her lap in front of the stove and Laura to the side of the stove with a book on her lap.

Own opinion:

A thin book and I am not interested in the stories, because that comes straight from the books, but I’m interested in the drawings by Renée Graef. And they are nice and sweet.

Eigen mening:

Het boek ziet er wel heel netjes uit. Ik vind het niet altijd makkelijk om Laura’s artikelen te lezen en moet er goed mijn hoofd bij houden. Het leest dan ook niet zo heel snel.

Own opinion:

The book looks very neat. I don't always find it easy to read Laura's articles and I have to pay attention. It is therefore not a very fast read.

Het bekende hoofdstuk uit het boek “ kleine huis op de prairie”.  Met het mooie verhaal van de regen tot kerstmis en daarna de overstroomde, wilde rivier, waardoor ook Mr. Edwards niet kan komen. Laura en Mary zijn stil en teleurgesteld omdat de kerstman niet kan komen. Ma bedenkt toch iets, maar dan staat plots toch Mr. Edwards voor de deur. Hij heeft de oversteek gewaagd en de kadootjes voor Laura en Mary meegenomen. Terwijl hij Laura en Mary vertelt over zijn ontmoeting met de kerstman, verstopt Ma de kadootjes. De meisjes zijn dolblij als ze wel 4 kadootjes krijgen!! Daarna is het toch nog een gelukkig, vrolijk kerstfeest.

Tekeningen:

Dit boek heeft tekeningen van Renée Graef. Deze zijn zeer mooi en levendig en goed. Ze zijn fijn om naar te kijken en maken een beeld zoals het echt geweest zou kunnen zijn. Zo lief als in de eerste tekening Laura met de papieren poppen zit te spelen en Mary zit te naaien voor het haardvuur. Op de tekening daarna telt Laura op haar vingers de dagen af tot kerst. Dan een tekening van de sneeuwloze prairie vol regenplassen. De volgende tekening is van de meisjes en Ma in de blokhut, Laura zittend op een boomstronk en Mary met Carrie in haar armen. Dan Ma die de sokken ophangt bij de open haard, terwijl Mary en Laura al in bed liggen. Vervolgens een tekening van Pa die open doet voor een natte meneer Edwards. Dan een tekening van een jonge, vrolijke meneer Edwards die Laura en Mary vertelt over de kerstman, terwijl hij bij de haard zit. De volgende tekening is van de kerstman die Mr Edwards ontmoet voor de winkel in de stad. Dan een tekening van de kerstman die wegrijdt op zijn paard met een pakezel achter zich aan. Nog een tekening van Mary en Laura die hun eigen beker staan te bewonderen en baby Carrie die op bed ligt te spelen met haar beentjes, een tekening van Laura in kleermakerszit tussen al haar kadootjes en een tekening van Pa die meneer Edwards bedankt, net als Laura en Mary en een gelukkige Ma. De eennalaatste tekening is van het kerstdiner met iedereen aan tafel en de laatste tekening van een sterrenhemel met daaronder het donker kleine huis en een grote twinkelende ster aan de hemel.

Eigen mening:

Mooi boek met prachtige, grote tekeningen van Renée Graef. Het verhaal is bekend, maar wordt wel levendiger door de mooie tekeningen. Het is een mooi boek, al is het verhaal helemaal bekend.

Summary:

Drawings:

This book has drawings by Renée Graef. These are very beautiful and lively and good. They are nice to look at and make an image as it could really have been. As sweet as in the first drawing Laura is playing with the paper dolls and Mary is sewing in front of the fire. In the drawing after that Laura counts the days until Christmas on her fingers. Then a drawing of the snowless prairie full of puddles. The next drawing is of the girls and Ma in the cabin, Laura sitting on a log and Mary holding Carrie. Then Ma hanging up the stockings by the fire, while Mary and Laura are already in bed. Then a drawing of Pa opening the door to a wet Mr. Edwards. Then a drawing of a young, cheerful Mr. Edwards telling Laura and Mary about Santa Claus, while he is sitting by the fire. The next drawing is of Santa Claus meeting Mr. Edwards in front of the store in town. Then a drawing of Santa Claus riding away on his horse with a packed mule behind him. Another drawing of Mary and Laura admiring their own cups and baby Carrie lying on the bed playing with her legs, a drawing of Laura sitting cross-legged among all her presents, and a drawing of Pa thanking Mr. Edwards, as well as Laura and Mary and a happy Ma. The penultimate drawing is of the Christmas dinner with everyone at the table and the last drawing of a starry sky with the dark little house underneath and a large twinkling star in the sky.

Own opinion:

Beautiful book with beautiful, large drawings by Renée Graef. The story is well-known, but is made more lively by the beautiful drawings. It is a beautiful book, even though the story is completely well-known.

Samenvatting:

Dit boek gaat over de jaren dat Rose van school af is en nog net in Mansfield woont. Er wordt gesuggereerd dat ze vrijwel een relatie heeft met Paul en met hem uitgaat en buggy-ritjes maakt, maar vooral in het geheim. Paul vertelt haar alles over de telegrafie en wekt zo Rose haar interesse. Hij wil eigenlijk niet dat Rose gaat werken, maar hij wil ook pas trouwen als ze er geld voor hebben. Rose besluit zelf om naar Kansas City te gaan en telegrafie te leren. In Kansas City heeft ze het best moeilijk. Ze moet er hard werken en heeft moeite het hoofd boven water te houden. Ze komt te wonen bij een verre vriendin van haar ouders, maar deze vrouw kijkt erg neer op de manier waarop Rose nu leeft. Er gebeurd iets waardoor Rose meteen weg moet en ze trekt in bij een vriendin en haar moeder. Deze twee nemen Rose het nachtleven mee in en ondanks haar gebrek aan geld, doet ze mee. Paul komt een keer op bezoek. Ook hij werkt op verschillende plekken in het land als telegrafist. Ze willen nog steeds trouwen. Maar hun levens drijven uiteen. Rose leert steeds meer kennen van de wereld en op de helft van het boek heeft ze meer interesse in de wereldse Gillette Lane, dan in de wat saaie, traditiegetrouwe Paul. Tot die tijd werkt ze in meerdere banen tegelijk om in haar eerste levensbehoefte te kunnen voorzien. Ze verhuisd uiteindelijk naar San Francisco. Na haar huwelijk met Gillette Lane gaat ze werken als makelaar. Geld is altijd een probleem bij Gillette en Rose. Uiteindelijk breekt het het huwelijk op. Rose keert terug naar San Francisco en gaat werken als verslaggever.

Er staan geen tekeningen of tekeningetjes in dit boek.

Eigen mening:

Dit boek is eigenlijk de laatste delen van de Rose-jaren samen en een periode net iets langer. Over haar leven als ze samen is met Gillette. Het is geen fijn leesbaar boek, moeilijk Engels, lange zinnen en soms ingewikkeld wat er allemaal gebeurd. Als dit boek werkelijk van Rose haar hand komt, dan is het niet geloofwaardig dat ze erg veel aandeel heeft gehad in de boeken van haar moeder (persoonlijke mening).  Daarbij wordt Rose in het boek neergezet als een sophisticated dame die veel behoefte heeft aan geld en eigenlijk een gat in haar hand heeft. Ze maakt vaak verkeerde keuzes en is zeer ontevreden over zichzelf.

Summary:

This book is about the years when Rose has finished school and is still living in Mansfield. It is suggested that she is practically in a relationship with Paul and goes out with him and takes buggy rides, but mostly in secret. Paul tells her all about the telegraph and thus arouses Rose's interest. He does not really want Rose to work, but he also does not want to get married until they have the money for it. Rose decides to go to Kansas City herself and learn telegraphy. In Kansas City she has a hard time. She has to work hard and has trouble keeping her head above water. She ends up living with a distant friend of her parents, but this woman looks down on the way Rose is living now. Something happens that makes Rose have to leave immediately and she moves in with a friend and her mother. These two take Rose into the nightlife and despite her lack of money, she joins in. Paul comes to visit one time. He also works in various places in the country as a telegrapher. They still want to get married. But their lives drift apart. Rose learns more and more about the world and halfway through the book she is more interested in the worldly Gillette Lane than in the somewhat boring, traditional Paul. Until then she works in several jobs at the same time to be able to provide for her basic needs. She eventually moves to San Francisco. After her marriage to Gillette Lane she starts working as a real estate agent. Money is always a problem for Gillette and Rose. Eventually it breaks up the marriage. Rose returns to San Francisco and starts working as a reporter.

There are no drawings or little drawings in this book.

Personal opinion:

This book is actually the last parts of the Rose years together and a period slightly longer. About her life when she is together with Gillette. It is not a pleasant readable book, difficult English, long sentences and sometimes complicated what happens. If this book really comes from Rose's hand, then it is not credible that she had a lot of share in her mother's books (personal opinion). In addition, Rose is portrayed in the book as a sophisticated lady who has a great need for money and actually has a hole in her hand. She often makes wrong choices and is very dissatisfied with herself.

Dit boekje bestaat uit 8 hoofdstukken, afkomstig van het eerste deel van de Rose-serie. Dus dat de familie zich vestigt op Rocky Ridge.

In hoofdstuk 1 rijdt de huifkar met Almanzo, Laura en Rose naar Rocky Ridge, hun aangekochte land. Daar zien ze voor het eerst de ruigheid en de blokhut.

In hoofdstuk 2 gaan ze in de blokhut. Laura en Rose maken samen de blokhut schoon. Ze vinden veel spinnenwebben en een paar grote spinnen en nog ander onbekend ongedierte.

Hoofdstuk 3 brengen ze alle spullen naar binnen. Laura en Rose verrassen Almanzo met hoe gezellig het huis is geworden.

In hoofdstuk 4 gaan Rose en Laura op onderzoek uit op het land. Ze zien de appelboompjes, ze spelen in de beek.

In Hoofdstuk 5 bouwt Almanzo een hok voor de kippen zodat ze veilig zijn tegen de vossen en uilen. Daarna moeten Laura en Rose de hennen het huis in jagen, terwijl de hennen dat eigenlijk niet willen.

In hoofdstuk 6 maakt Almanzo een raam in de blokhut, zodat Laura naar buiten kan kijken. Rose helpt Almanzo.

In hoofdstuk 7 vangt Rose een konijn in een holle boomstam en kan Laura daar iets lekkers van maken.

In hoofdstuk 8 komen de mensen uit de omgeving om samen een stal te bouwen voor Almanzo en Laura. Rose ontmoet haar vrienden: Alva, Paul en George.

Tekeningen:

Ieder hoofdstuk heeft zijn eigen tekeningen, sommige tekeningen zijn paginagroot, andere wat kleiner. Het zijn wel mooie, lieve tekeningen. De eerste tekening is van een meisje dat in de open deur van een blokhut in het bos kijkt. Op de tweede tekening staan een vrouw en een meisje zit op een boomstam en een grote spin kruipt naar het meisje. Beide vrouwen gillen. Dan volgt een paginagrootte tekening van een vader die zijn dochter omhelst en en moeder staat er bij. Er staat een tafel met een lamp en je ziet de hoek van een bed en een open haard met de klok. Op het volgende plaatje zitten moeder en dochter aan de rand van een beekje met hun voeten in het water. Dan volgt het plaatje dat moeder en dochter met stokken in beide handen de kippen naar de deur van het hok leiden. Dan volgt een tekening van vader en dochter die de kieren van de blokhut samen dichtsmeren. Dan volgt weer een grote tekening van een meisje dat staat te springen op een bos takken waar een konijntje onderuit rent. De laatste tekening is van 4 kinderen (twee jongens, twee meisjes) die zitten te eten buiten, achter hen wordt een schuur gebouwd.

Eigen mening:

De verhalen zijn net even anders dan in de boeken. Dat maakt het wel leuk om te lezen. Maar ze zijn ook niet waarheidsgetrouw, dat is jammer. De tekeningen zijn mooi, alleen lijken de moeder en dochter maar soms op Laura en Rose.

Summary:

This book consists of 8 chapters, taken from the first part of the Rose series. So that the family settles on Rocky Ridge.

In chapter 1, the covered wagon with Almanzo, Laura and Rose drives to Rocky Ridge, their purchased land. There they see the roughness and the log cabin for the first time.

In chapter 2, they go into the log cabin. Laura and Rose clean the log cabin together. They find many spider webs and a few large spiders and other unknown vermin.

In chapter 3, they bring all the stuff inside. Laura and Rose surprise Almanzo with how cozy the house has become.

In chapter 4, Rose and Laura go exploring on the land. They see the apple trees, they play in the stream.

In chapter 5, Almanzo builds a coop for the chickens so that they are safe from the foxes and owls. Then Laura and Rose have to chase the hens into the house, while the hens actually don't want that.

In chapter 6, Almanzo makes a window in the log cabin so Laura can look outside. Rose helps Almanzo.

In chapter 7, Rose catches a rabbit in a hollow log and Laura can make something tasty out of it.

In chapter 8, the people from the area come to build a stable for Almanzo and Laura. Rose meets her friends: Alva, Paul and George.

Drawings:

Each chapter has its own drawings, some drawings are full page, others a bit smaller. They are beautiful, sweet drawings. The first drawing is of a girl looking into the open door of a log cabin in the forest. The second drawing shows a woman and a girl sitting on a log and a large spider crawling towards the girl. Both women scream. Then follows a full page drawing of a father hugging his daughter and a mother standing there. There is a table with a lamp and you can see the corner of a bed and a fireplace with the clock. In the next picture, mother and daughter are sitting at the edge of a stream with their feet in the water. Then follows the picture of mother and daughter with sticks in both hands leading the chickens to the door of the coop. Then follows a drawing of father and daughter who together seal the cracks of the log cabin. Then follows another large drawing of a girl jumping on a bunch of branches from under which a rabbit runs. The last drawing is of 4 children (two boys, two girls) who are sitting outside eating, behind them a barn is being built.

Own opinion:

The stories are just a little different from the books. That makes it fun to read. But they are also not true to life, which is a pity. The drawings are beautiful, only the mother and daughter only sometimes look like Laura and Rose.
