Samenvatting:

Een dun hoofdstukken-boekje maar ditmaal over de delen van Rose. Er staan 8 hoofdstukken in het boekje. 

1. Nieuw meisje 

Het gezin Wilder woont nu bijna een jaar in Missouri en Rose gaat voor het eerst naar school. Iedereen is nieuw voor Rose en ze weet eerst niet eens in welke klas ze moet zitten. Ze kent er niemand en wordt duidelijk afgewezen door de stadmeisjes, omdat haar jurk niet zo mooi is. Ze voelt zich diep ongelukkig. Verder vindt ze de lessen erg saai, omdat ze al veel verder is. De jongens die ze kent, Paul en George, rennen in de pauze voorbij om te spelen. Rose twijfelt of ze wel op school wil blijven, vroeger in DeSmet was school veel leuker. 

2. Lessen in de namiddag 

Tijdens de lunch ontmoet Rose de tweeling Dora en Cora die een klas hoger zitten, maar met hen kan ze meespelen. Ze heeft helemaal geen zin in de middaglessen, maar er is een speldown. Iedereen wordt in een lange rij door de klas gezet en moet een woord spellen. Als het fout is, schuift de rij op. Rose begint ver achteraan, maar spelt zich een weg naar de top en weet te winnen van Blanche, een stadsmeisjes wat Rose uitlacht. Rose is heel blij als de schooldag voorbij is. 

3. Spellingswedstijd 

Rose zit alweer enige tijd op school en vindt het wel prima. Iedere dag weet ze te winnen van Blanche met spellen, maar Rose praat niet tegen haar. Er wordt een speciale avond georganiseerd zodat de ouders kunnen komen kijken naar hun kinderen. Er is ook een spelwedstrijd en deze wint Rose ook van Blanche. Rose is superblij dat haar ouders haar zien winnen en ze zijn trots op haar. Ze krijgt een poëziealbum als prijs. Maar Rose vindt het vervelend als ze Blanche ziet huilen omdat ze verloor. Eerst stelt ze voor om het poëziealbum te delen, omdat ze eigenlijk allebei de beste spellers zijn. Maar als dat niet kan, besluit Rose dat Blanche er dan het eerste in mag schrijven. En zo maakt ze een nieuwe vriendin. 

4. Terug naar school 

De oogsttijd is voorbij en school begint weer. Maar deze keer wordt Rose binnengehaald door Blanche en zitten ze naast elkaar. Rose vindt het leuk om terug te zijn op school. 

5. Professor Crowe 

Rose is alweer een klas verder en heeft zin in naar school te gaan. Maar dat valt tegen! Ze hebben een nieuwe leraar, een strenge, onrechtvaardige man. Al meteen begint hij superstreng tegen de kinderen en ze mogen niets meer. Rose heeft geleerd om op een bepaalde manier te schrijven en dat mag ze niet meer. Een ander kind moet expres met rechts schrijven, terwijl hij links is. De hele klas is unaniem in zijn afkeer. 

6. De poets met de kachel 

De volgende dag besluiten de jongens van de klas de meester te pesten. Hij is zo onaardig! Hij slaat George Cooley omdat die ergens om lachte, hij is streng en gemeen. De jongens duwen steeds een klein beetje tegen de kachel en net als de les weer begint na de pauze, komt het laatste duwtje waardoor de kachelpijp loskomt en omvalt. Rose ziet het en roept "kijk uit". De meester is erg boos en wil weten wie er geroepen heeft om die persoon uit te horen wie het gedaan heeft. Rose zegt niets en ook niemand anders verraad haar. 

7. De laatste druppel 

De rest van de week moeten alle kinderen in de pauze binnen blijven en leren. Ze gedragen zich netjes, maar kunnen alleen ontspannen als de leraar de klas uit is. Op vrijdag zit Rose in de klas te lezen als een jongen binnenkomt met een dierenvacht en deze over de grond veegt. Als de les weer begint, is Rose benieuwd naar wat er gaat gebeuren. Ze horen verderop honden blaffen en deze komen steeds dichterbij de school. De jongen van de vacht moet naar de wc en ineens komen er allemaal jachthonden binnen. Ze volgen een spoor en vinden de vacht in de jas van de meester. Maar omdat meerdere honden de vacht willen pakken, scheuren ze de jas aan stukken. Meester is woest en vertrekt meteen. 

8. Een zinvolle les 

Eerst is er een tijdje geen leraar voor Rose haar klas, maar dan komt de lieve juf weer terug die ze eigenlijk wilden. Ze is dan wel getrouwd, maar ze geeft graag les. Nu is het weer leuk op school. Deze juf is aardig en doet leuke dingen en is vriendelijk. Mama Bess heeft voor Rose een nieuwe, moderne muts gemaakt die Rose vol trots draagt naar school. Maar dan is de muts ineens verdwenen en niemand weet waar hij is. Juf bedenkt een oplossing met een wichelroede die de muts wel kan vinden en het kind dat hem heeft verstopt. Een meisje bekend. Het is een arm boerenmeisje dat de muts heeft gepakt omdat ze het koud had en jaloers was. Rose heeft haar muts weer terug en het meisje heeft een les geleerd. 

Tekeningen:

In ieder hoofdstuk is wel een tekeningetje. In het eerste hoofdstuk is de tekening van een verlegen Rose die naast een tafeltje staat bij een meisje met een mooie jurk aan en ze wordt afgewezen om plaats te nemen. In hoofdstuk twee is het een plaatje van de tweeling die zit te lunchen en Rose die er in het midden bij zit. Bij het hoofdstuk van de spellingswedstrijd is het plaatje dat Rose het poëziealbum geeft aan Blanche. Dan volgt een groot plaatje van Rose in de arm met Blanche, haar jas nog aan, emmertje nog in de hand, als twee vriendinnen. Het volgende plaatje is ook paginagroot van de leraar die een jongen in zijn nekvel heeft en een stok in zijn hand. Dan volgt een plaatje van een kachelpijp die met veel roet naar beneden komt. In het een na laatste hoofdstuk staat een plaatje van honden die een jas aan stukken scheuren. In het laatste hoofdstuk is het plaatje van een juf met een stok in haar hand en kinderen die in het lokaal zitten.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met verhalen uit de Rose-boeken. De tekeningen zijn lief.

1. New girl

The Wilder family has been living in Missouri for almost a year now and Rose is going to school for the first time. Everyone is new to Rose and at first she doesn't even know which class she should be in. She doesn't know anyone there and is clearly rejected by the city girls, because her dress isn't that pretty. She feels deeply unhappy. Furthermore, she finds the lessons very boring, because she is already much further along. The boys she knows, Paul and George, run past during recess to play. Rose doubts whether she wants to stay at school, in the past in DeSmet school was much more fun.

2. Lessons in the afternoon

During lunch Rose meets the twins Dora and Cora who are in a class above, but she can play with them. She doesn't feel like going to the afternoon lessons at all, but there is a spelldown. Everyone is put in a long line through the class and has to spell a word. If it is wrong, the line moves up. Rose starts far back, but spells her way to the top and manages to beat Blanche, a city girl who laughs at Rose. Rose is very happy when the school day is over.

3. Spelling contest

Rose has been in school for a while now and is fine with it. Every day she manages to beat Blanche in spell down, but Rose doesn't talk to her. A special evening is organized so that parents can come and watch their children. There is also a spelling contest and Rose wins this one too. Rose is very happy that her parents see her win and they are proud of her. She gets a poetry album as a prize. But Rose finds it annoying when she sees Blanche cry because she lost. First she suggests to share the poetry album, because they are both actually the best spellers. But if that is not possible, Rose decides that Blanche can write first in it. And so she makes a new friend.

4. Back to school

The harvest season is over and school starts again. But this time Rose is welcomed by Blanche and they sit next to each other. Rose is happy to be back at school.

5. Professor Crowe

Rose has already moved up a grade and is looking forward to going to school. But that is disappointing! They have a new teacher, a strict, unjust man. He immediately starts being very strict with the children and they are not allowed to do anything anymore. Rose has learned to write in a certain way and she is not allowed to do that anymore. Another child has to write with his right hand on purpose, while he is left-handed. The whole class is unanimous in its disgust.

6. The prank with the stove

The next day the boys in the class decide to tease the teacher. He is so unkind! He hits George Cooley because he laughed at something, he is strict and mean. The boys keep pushing the stove a little bit and just as the lesson starts again after the break, the last push comes and the stovepipe comes loose and falls over. Rose sees it and shouts "watch out". The teacher is very angry and wants to know who shouted to find out who did it. Rose says nothing and no one else betrays her.

7. The last straw

The rest of the week, all the children have to stay inside and study during recess. They behave well, but can only relax when the teacher is out of the classroom. On Friday, Rose is reading in class when a boy comes in with an animal fur and sweeps it across the floor. When class starts again, Rose is curious about what is going to happen. They hear dogs barking further away and they are getting closer and closer to the school. The boy with the fur has to go to the toilet and suddenly all the hunting dogs come in. They follow a trail and find the fur in the teacher's coat. But because several dogs want to grab the fur, they tear the coat to pieces. The teacher is furious and leaves immediately.

8. A meaningful lesson

At first, there is no teacher for Rose's class for a while, but then the nice teacher they actually wanted returns. She is married, but she likes teaching. Now it is fun at school again. This teacher is nice and does nice things and is friendly. Mama Bess has made Rose a new, modern hat that Rose proudly wears to school. But then the hat suddenly disappears and no one knows where it is. The teacher comes up with a solution with a dowsing rod that can find the hat and the child who hid it. A girl is known. It is a poor farm girl who took the hat because she was cold and jealous. Rose has her hat back and the girl has learned a lesson.

Drawings:

There is a drawing in every chapter. In the first chapter the drawing is of a shy Rose standing next to a table with a girl wearing a pretty dress and she is rejected to take a seat. In chapter two it is a picture of the twins who are having lunch and Rose who is sitting in the middle. In the chapter of the spelling competition the picture is that Rose gives the poetry album to Blanche. Then follows a large picture of Rose in the arm with Blanche, her coat still on, bucket still in hand, like two friends. The next picture is also full-page of the teacher who has a boy in the scruff of his neck and a stick in his hand. Then follows a picture of a stovepipe that comes down with a lot of soot. In the penultimate chapter there is a picture of dogs tearing a coat to pieces. In the last chapter there is a picture of a teacher with a stick in her hand and children sitting in the classroom.

Own opinion:

A thin book with stories from the Rose books. The drawings are sweet.
