In dit boekje gaat het verhaal over de drie mannen Joseph Carpenter, Perley Day Wilder en Peter Ingalls (neef Laura Ingalls Wilder) die samen in een zeilboot de Mississippi af varen. Joseph hield een dagboek bij van de reis en dit dagboek is afgedrukt. Tevens staat er meer informatie over de trip en het waarom. De aanvullende informatie bevat o.a. een brief van Laura dat zij en Almanzo het logboek hebben gelezen. In het verhaal wordt genoemd dat Peter de boot zijn naam gaf, naar zijn zus, want hij kocht de boot en mocht dus ook de naam verzinnen. Tijdens de reis van Joseph 27 jaar oud en Peter 24. Perley was de jongste met 22 jaar oud. De boot vertrok op 1 oktober 1890 in Stockholm. De meeste stukjes zijn kort. Meestal staat vermeld hoe laat ze weer vertrokken en dat ze onderweg vis vingen en over waar ze voorbij kwamen. Perley was de piloot en Peter de kapitein. Joseph benoemde zichzelf “crew”. Het is echt een algemeen dagboek met stukjes als “we gingen naar de winkel” en “we hielden zondagsrust want daar stemde de meerderheid voor”. Ergens pikken ze een hond op en die wordt “dog Passenger”. Hoe ze slapen en dat ze soms ruzie maken staat in het logboek vermeld. Een deel van de tocht wordt afgelegd met andere boten en uiteindelijk zelfs met een wagen en ossen (waarbij de boot meenemen). Pas eind december laten ze de boot achter om verkocht te worden. Het logboek eindigt op 22 januari 1891. Vervolgens volgt er nog een nawoord.

Tekeningen:

Veel foto’s staan in het boekje. En verder een paar stambomen van de verschillende families. Foto’s in het boekje zijn: de zeilboot op de rivier en een foto van Peter Ingalls, Joseph Quiner Carpenter en van de 3 Wilder-broers. Er is een fotootje van Angelina Howard en van overblijfselen van de haven in Stockholm. Er zijn verschillende voorkanten van ansichtkaarten in het boekje opgenomen. Verder zijn er verschillende foto’s van plaatsen waar ze aan voorbij gingen. Midden in het boekje zit een kaart van de route die is afgelegd vanaf Stockholm, Wisconsin tot aan Westville, Florida en de verschillende plaatsen dei ze voorbij gegaan zijn. Verder zit er een stamboom in van de familie Quiner- Ingalls-Carpenter en hoe ze aan elkaar gelinkt zijn. Tevens is er een stamboom van de familie Wilder. Er is een tekening van een hond. Er is nog een foto waarbij staat dat het Laura en Almanzo zijn en een foto van Perley en Elsie. De laatste foto’s zijn van de schrijfster bij het bureau van overgrootvader en van iemand die koekjes bakt in de keuken in Malone en van het bord in Malone en de boerderij.

Eigen mening:

Beslist een interessant boekje met leuke informatie. Het logboek is grappig om te lezen, echt “jonge mannen samen op reis”.  En de brief voorin van Laura is ook leuk.

Summary:

This booklet tells the story of three men, Joseph Carpenter, Perley Day Wilder, and Peter Ingalls (cousin Laura Ingalls Wilder), who sailed down the Mississippi River together in a sailboat. Joseph kept a journal of the voyage, and this journal is printed. It also includes more information about the trip and the reasons for it. The additional information includes a letter from Laura stating that she and Almanzo read the logbook. The story mentions that Peter named the boat after his sister, because he bought the boat and was therefore allowed to name it. During the voyage, Joseph was 27 years old and Peter was 24. Perley was the youngest, at 22. The boat departed from Stockholm, Wisconsin on October 1, 1890. Most of the entries are short. They usually mention the time they left, that they caught fish along the way, and the places they passed. Perley was the pilot and Peter the captain. Joseph called himself "crew." It's a truly general diary, with entries like "we went to the store" and "we rested on Sunday because the majority voted in favor." Somewhere along the way, they picked up a dog, which became "dog passenger." The logbook records how they slept and their occasional arguments. They traveled part of the journey by other boats, and eventually even by wagon and oxen (taking the boat along). They didn't leave the boat behind until late December to be sold. The logbook ends on January 22, 1891, in Westville, Florida and is followed by an afterword.

Drawings:

The booklet contains many photographs, as well as a few family trees. Photos include the sailboat on the river and a photo of Peter Ingalls, Joseph Quiner Carpenter, and the three Wilder brothers. There's a photo of Angelina Howard and of the remains of the harbor in Stockholm. The booklet includes several postcard fronts. There are also several photos of places they passed. In the middle of the booklet is a map of the route they travelled from Stockholm, Wisconsin, to Westville, Florida, and the various places they passed. It also includes a family tree of the Quiner-Ingalls-Carpenter family and how they are related. There's also a family tree of the Wilder family. There's a drawing of a dog. There's another photo identifying it as Laura and Almanzo, and another of Perley and Elsie. The final photos are of the writer at great-grandfather's desk, someone baking cookies in the kitchen in Malone, and the sign in Malone and the farmhouse.

My opinion:

Definitely an interesting book with interesting information. The logbook is fun to read, a real "young men traveling together" theme. And Laura's letter at the front is also nice.

Geinig boekje. De vragen zijn simpel als je een kenner bent, maar het is leuk samengesteld. En de plaatjes passen erbij.

Een boekje geschreven door William Anderson, wat staat voor goed leesbaar en heldere, kloppende informatie. Veel over de verschillende sites van Laura Ingalls Wilder die je kunt bezoeken, maar ook wat je er nog meer in de omgeving kunt doen en waar je kunt eten en slapen en hoe je er komt. Vaak ook met prijzen erbij en telefoonnummers.

Van iedere site gewoon veel informatie. Het boekje heeft 11 hoofdstukken. Ieder hoofdstuk is opgebouwd uit dezelfde kopjes, zoals de bespreking van de familie Ingalls die er woonde en wanneer. De opmerkingen over de site en dan wat er verder nog te zien en doen is. Dan komt het kopje “waar eten en slapen” en elk hoofdstuk eindigt met hoe je op de site moet komen. In sommige hoofdstukken staat nog wat extra informatie over de site.

Tekeningen:

Foto’s van Leslie A. Kelly zijn altijd duidelijk en scherp. Mooie foto’s van de sites en de omgeving van de sites. Er is een kaart van Amerika met alle plekken. Andere foto’s zijn van de blokhut in Pepin, maar ook van het railroad depot museum en het bord op de site en van het Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Pepin. De volgende grote foto is van de blokhut op de prairie zowel van binnen als buiten en de put op de site. Ook zijn er foto’s van de graven van Edmund Mason en Dr. Tann. En natuurlijk van de prairie. De volgende grote foto is van het bord op de plek van de dugout. Met daarna foto’s van Plum Creek, Walnut Grove, het museum en Pa’s klok. Dan een mooie foto van de zijkant van het hotel in Burr Oak, zowel als een oude foto en een foto van de voorkant. Dan natuurlijk Pa’s huis in De Smet. Een foto van de trainrails en van Vader De Smet. Ook nog foto’s van de binnenkant van het landmetershuis. Er staat ook een plattegrond van De Smet in het boek en foto’s van de binnenkant van Pa’s huis. Dan natuurlijk ook nog foto’s van de homestead. Er is nog een oude foto van Laura bij een auto opgenomen in het boek en foto’s van Mount Rushmore en het museum in Keystone. Vervolgens natuurlijk een foto van het witte huis in Mansfield, zowel van binnen als buiten zijn verschillende foto’s opgenomen in het boek. Ook staat er een plattegrond in van de benedenverdieping van het huis in Mansfield. Vervolgens nog foto’s van het Rock huis, een oude foto van het huis in de stad en een foto van het graf van de Wilders. De laatste grote foto is van het huis in Malone en wat foto’s van het interieur. Een foto van het huis in Spring Valley is ook in het boek opgenomen.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boekje, ook voor als je een reis wil plannen. Veel informatie. Mooie foto’s ook en het is erg leuk dat in het boek een plattegrond van het huis in Mansfield staat.

A booklet written by William Anderson, which stands for easy-to-read and clear, accurate information. It covers a lot of the various Laura Ingalls Wilder sites you can visit, as well as things to do in the area, including places to eat, sleep, and how to get there. Prices and phone numbers are often included.

A wealth of information about each site. The booklet has 11 chapters. Each chapter is structured around the same headings, such as a discussion of the Ingalls family who lived there and when. Comments about the site are followed by what else there is to see and do. Then comes the section "Where to Eat and Sleep," and each chapter concludes with how to get to the site. Some chapters also provide additional information about the site.

Illustrations:

Photos by Leslie A. Kelly are always clear and sharp. Beautiful photos of the sites and their surroundings. A map of America is included, showing all the locations. Other photos include the log cabin in Pepin, the railroad depot museum and the sign on the site, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Pepin. The next large photo shows the log cabin on the prairie, both inside and out, and the well on the site. There are also photos of the graves of Edmund Mason and Dr. Tann. And, of course, the prairie. The next large photo is of the sign where the dugout once stood. Then there are photos of Plum Creek, Walnut Grove, the museum, and Pa's clock. Then a beautiful photo of the side of the hotel in Burr Oak, both an old photo and a photo of the front. Then, of course, Pa’s house in De Smet. A photo of the train tracks and of Father De Smet. There are also photos of the inside of the surveyor's house. The book also includes a map of De Smet and photos of the interior of Pa's house. And, of course, photos of the homestead. The book also includes an old photo of Laura standing by a car, as well as photos of Mount Rushmore and the museum in Keystone. Then, of course, a photo of the white house in Mansfield, with several photos of both the interior and exterior. There's also a floor plan of the Mansfield house's ground floor. Then there are photos of the Rock house, an old photo of the house in town, and a photo of the Wilders' grave. The final large photo is of the house in Malone, along with some interior photos. A photo of the house in Spring Valley is also included.

My opinion:

A lovely book, also great for planning a trip. Lots of information. Beautiful photos, too, and it's great that the book includes a floor plan of the Mansfield house.

Tekeningen:

Er staan vooral veel kleine tekeningen in, door Renée Greaf. Ze illustreren de onderwerpen in het boek. Zo is er een ganzenveer in een potje, een ingepakte baby, moeder met baby, familie met baby, een baby in bad en in de wieg, een gezin in een huifkar, een kruipende baby, een boek, een kiekeboe spelend kind, een kerstboom, een taart met 1 kaars, een beer, een huisje en een meisje onder een regenboog.

Eigen mening:

Ontvangen bij de zending van Susan Dugan in 2021. Dit boek wilde ik gewoon hebben om dingen compleet te maken, maar eigenlijk is het geen super boek. Wel de tekeningetjes van Renée Graef zijn leuk. Maar verder zal ik het niet gebruiken verwacht ik.

Drawings:

It contains many small drawings by Renée Greaf. They illustrate the book's themes. For example, there's a quill in a jar, a wrapped baby, a mother with her baby, a family with her baby, a baby in the bath and in the crib, a family in a covered wagon, a crawling baby, a book, a child playing peek-a-boo, a Christmas tree, a cake with one candle, a bear, a little house, and a girl under a rainbow.

My opinion:

Received with Susan Dugan's 2021 shipment. I just wanted this book to round things out, but it's not a great book. Well, Renée Graef's drawings are nice. But I don't expect to use it much further.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn van Renée Graef. Allen ondersteunend aan de kopjes en onderwerpen. Natuurlijk lief en passend en ook weer allemaal nieuw. De tekeningetjes zijn wel klein. De tekeningen relateren aan de familie Ingalls. Als fan zijn ze herkenbaar. Een viool, een hond, kerstsokken, pop Charlotte, een klok, een blokhut.

Eigen mening:

Ik heb het boek gekregen in 2021 bij de levering van Susan Duggan. Het is een invulboek en ik zal het, verwacht ik, niet gebruiken. Het gaat over baby’s eerste jaar. Het gaat mij om de tekeningen.

You don't want this book for the text, because it's a fill-in book. It's a baby book for the first year, where you fill in what your child experiences. So: a family tree, what I looked like, what my parents said when they saw me, what was happening in the world, who came to visit first, gifts received, where I lived, when I got teeth, a daily schedule, first steps, crawling, and so on. There's also a bit of the second, third, and fourth year.

Illustrations:

The illustrations are by Renée Graef. All support the headings and topics. Sweet and fitting, of course, and all new. The drawings are small. The illustrations relate to the Ingalls family. As a fan, they're recognizable. A violin, a dog, Christmas stockings, a Charlotte doll, a clock, a log cabin.

My opinion:

I received the book in 2021 when it was delivered by Susan Duggan. It's a fill-in book, and I don't expect I'll use it. It's about a baby's first year.  It's the drawings that matter to me.

De allereerste tekening is van het gezin Ingalls in het bos en vervolgens een plaatje van de blokhut en in de blokhut. Zeer mooi boek!!! Gekregen van Kathy Glaser als verrassing met de post en eerste brief. Interessant muziek en lief. Heel fijn boek om te hebben. Ook de tekstjes zijn leuk. Ik heb het boek toevallig later nogmaals gekocht met een andere voorkant, ik heb het boek dus twee maal.

My opinion:

A very nice book!!! Received this from Kathy Glaser as a surprise in the mail and with the first letter. Interesting music and sweet. A really nice book to have. The lyrics are also nice. I happened to buy it again later with a different cover, so I have it twice.

Prachtige teksten, veel recepten. De recepten zijn allemaal gelinkt aan Laura Ingalls Wilder en duidelijk beschreven. De teksten zijn geweldig. Heel mooi, heel betrokken, vernieuwend, heerlijk geschreven. Erg interessant. Het boek is ingedeeld in 5 hoofdstukken met recepten voor: hoofdgerechten, groente en bijgerechten, Brood, nagerechten en drinken. Voor elk recept staat een stukje tekst over Laura Ingalls Wilder en haar familie en hun manieren en mogelijkheden voor koken. De teksten verwijzen vaak naar de foto die op de pagina staat. Daarna staat er een recept. Elk recept bestaat uit een kopje “benodigdheden” en “bereidingswijze”. Vrijwel elk recept bestaat uit 1 bladzijde en heel soms uit 2. De bereidingswijze is kort en krachtig.

Tekeningen:

Het hele boek bevat prachtige foto’s van Rocky Ridge Farm!!! Sommige heel gedetailleerd, zeer lieflijk, scherp. Echt zo mooi. Bijna alles is in kleur. De foto’s zijn vernieuwend en een genoegen om te bekijken. Bijna iedere bladzijde heeft een foto. De foto’s zijn heel scherp. De eerste foto is een doorkijkje door de voordeur van Rocky Ridge op een herfstdag. Er is een foto van Laura en van het complete huis. Een foto van Laura’s receptenboek en de keuken in Rocky Ridge. Een foto van de viool op een lappendeken, de glazen broodschaal, fossielen in steen, een zonsopkomst, Laura’s stoel bij de tafel, een comfortabele leunstoel in de woonkamer, een dakraam, van de maan boven het huis met verlichte ramen, het orgel, de zijkant van het huis met zonsondergang, mais in een schaal op de trap, Laura’s schrijftafeltje, Laura’s fornuis, Laura’s schort, Laura’s servies, een cake, de brievenbus de woonkamer van Rocky Ridge in de zon, de muziekhoek in het huis, een mandje eieren, Laura’s boek met huishoudelijke tips, een mandje citroenen en een mandje met Laura’s kruidkoek, een inzoom van Laura’s aanrecht, Laura’s schommelstoel, een mandje appels, het Rock-house, een brief van Ma, Laura’s naaidoos en deken, Laura’s handschoenen en hoed, de eettafel, de schommelbank op de veranda, boeken, de gedekte eettafel en Rose’ Turkse theeservies voor de haard. Eigen mening:

Boekje in 2020 via Marktplaats gevonden, zomaar. In Eindhoven. Prachtige en verrassende aanwinst. Zulke mooie foto’s! interessante teksten. De recepten zal ik niet perse maken, maar de foto’s en informatie maken het boek heel waardevol. De foto’s zijn echt geweldig om naar te kijken, heel warm en mooi. En ook de teksten en recepten zijn interessant. Het was echt een mooie verrassing hoe leuk dit boek was.

Beautiful text, many recipes. The recipes are all linked to Laura Ingalls Wilder and clearly described. The text is fantastic. Very beautiful, very engaging, innovative, wonderfully written. Very interesting. The book is divided into five chapters with recipes for: main courses, vegetables and side dishes, bread, desserts, and drinks. Each recipe includes a short text about Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family and their cooking methods and abilities. The text often refers to the photo on the page. Then there is a recipe. Each recipe consists of a heading "ingredients" and "method of preparation." Almost every recipe is one page long, and very occasionally two. The instructions are short and sweet.

Illustrations:

The entire book contains beautiful photos of Rocky Ridge Farm! Some are very detailed, very sweet, and sharp. Truly beautiful. Almost everything is in color. The photos are innovative and a pleasure to look at. Almost every page has a photo. The photos are very sharp. The first photo is a view through the front door of Rocky Ridge on a fall day. There's a photo of Laura and of the entire house. There's also a photo of Laura's recipe book and the kitchen at Rocky Ridge. A photograph of the violin on a patchwork quilt, the glass bread plate, fossils in stone, a sunrise, Laura’s chair at the table, a comfortable armchair in the living room, a skylight, the moon over the house with lighted windows, the organ, the side of the house at sunset, corn in a bowl on the stairs, Laura’s writing table, Laura’s stove, Laura’s apron, Laura’s dishes, a cake, the mailbox, the living room at Rocky Ridge in the sun, the music corner in the house, a basket of eggs, Laura’s book of housekeeping tips, a basket of lemons and a basket of Laura’s gingerbread, a zoom in on Laura’s kitchen counter, Laura’s rocking chair, a basket of apples, the Rock House, a letter from Ma, Laura’s sewing box and blanket, Laura’s gloves and hat, the dining table, the porch swing, books, the table setting, and Rose’s Turkish tea set in front of the fireplace. My own opinion:

Found this book on Marktplaats in 2020, just like that. In Eindhoven. A beautiful and surprising find. Such beautiful photos! Interesting texts. I won't necessarily make the recipes, but the photos and information make the book very valuable. The photos are truly wonderful to look at, very warm and beautiful. And the texts and recipes are also interesting. It was a wonderful surprise how much I enjoyed this book.

In dit boekje wordt vertelt over het leven van de familie Wilder in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Ze verhuisden daar naartoe rond 1870. In het boekje wordt ingegaan op heel veel verschillende aspecten van Spring Valley die een link hebben met de familie. Zo wordt genoemd tot welke kerk ze behoorden en wanneer ze zich daarbij aansloten en ook wanneer ze gedoopt werden.
Ook is er een heel hoofdstuk over de personen van Spring Valley met een link naar de familie Wilder. Er woonde een periode een neef van Almanzo bij de familie Wilder in, hij trouwde in Spring Valley en zijn dochter Mabel was bruidsmeisje bij het huwelijk van Eliza Jane. Ook over het gezin van dochter Laura Wilder, die woonde in Crowley na het overlijden van haar man, wordt vertelt. Haar dochter Angelina woonde in Spring Valley. Dan over Albert Baldwin, de man van Alice. Ook waren er leden van de familie Ingalls die in Spring Valley woonden. Het was vooral verre familie van Laura, maar het gezin Charles Ingalls was in 1876 maar 40 mijl verwijderd van Spring valley toen ze in Burr Oak woonden. En dan is er nog de familie Thayer. Deze kende vele familieleden in Spring Valley, onder andere ook de man van Eliza Jane. Er zijn nog veel mensen met een link, zoals Edward Sears, de Lobdill-tweeling en de familie Ewings.
In de jaren 1880 bouwde James Wilder zijn boerderij op in Spring Valley en wist hem winstgevend te maken. Rond 1890 woonden Almanzo en Laura en Rose een tijdje bij de ouders van Almanzo in Spring Valley. Royal Wilder vestigde zich als winkelier in Spring Valley en woonde er zijn hele leven en ligt er ook begraven. Het 50-jarige huwelijk van James en Angelina Wilder werd in Spring Valley gevierd. In de jaren 1890 was er veel informatie te vinden in Spring valley die verband hield met de familie Wilder.

Er staan veel foto's in het boekje van de familie Wilder en hun bekenden. Ook zijn er veel foto's opgenomen van Spring Valley zelf. Er staat onder andere een foto van James en Angelina Wilder op hun 50-jarige huwelijksdag. Er is een foto van de originele schuur van de Wilders, deze foto is gemaakt in 1990. Er staat een plattegrond in van Spring Valley in 1880 en een foto van de grafsteen van Royal. Er staat een schilderij in van het huis van Royal Wilder.

Eigen mening:

Dun boekje met veel informatie. Beetje random verzameld, maar wel interessant. Het boekje staat vol informatie en is daardoor leuk om als aanvulling te lezen.

Summary:

This booklet describes the life of the Wilder family in Spring Valley, Minnesota. They moved there around 1870. It explores many different aspects of Spring Valley that are linked to the family. For example, it mentions which church they belonged to, when they joined, and when they were baptized.

There is also an entire chapter about the people of Spring Valley with a connection to the Wilder family. A nephew of Almanzo lived with the Wilder family for a time; he married in Spring Valley, and his daughter Mabel was a bridesmaid at Eliza Jane's wedding. It also tells about the family of daughter Laura Wilder, who lived in Crowley after her husband's death. Her daughter Angelina lived in Spring Valley. It also tells about Albert Baldwin, Alice's husband. Members of the Ingalls family also lived in Spring Valley. They were mostly distant relatives of Laura, but the Charles Ingalls family was only 40 miles from Spring Valley in 1876 when they lived in Burr Oak. And then there's the Thayer family. They knew many relatives in Spring Valley, including Eliza Jane's husband. There are still many people with a connection, such as Edward Sears, the Lobdill twins, and the Ewings family.

In the 1880s, James Wilder built his farm in Spring Valley and managed to make it profitable. Around 1890, Almanzo, Laura, and Rose lived with Almanzo's parents in Spring Valley for a while. Royal Wilder established himself as a storekeeper in Spring Valley, lived there his entire life, and is buried there. The 50th wedding anniversary of James and Angelina Wilder was celebrated in Spring Valley. In the 1890s, much information related to the Wilder family was available in Spring Valley.

The booklet contains many photos of the Wilder family and their acquaintances. There are also many photos of Spring Valley itself. One includes a photo of James and Angelina Wilder on their 50th wedding anniversary. There's also a photo of the Wilders' original barn, taken in 1990. There's a map of Spring Valley in 1880 and a photo of Royal's gravestone. There's also a painting of Royal Wilder's house.

My opinion:

A slim booklet with a lot of information. A bit haphazard, but interesting nonetheless. The booklet is packed with information, making it a fun read.
