Samenvatting:

In dit boek zijn muziekstukken verzameld van liedjes die voorkomen in de boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder. De hoofdstukken zijn ingedeeld naar "love-songs", kerkliederen, patriottistische liedjes, trieste liedjes, dansliedjes en spelletjes-liedjes en oude bekenden. Bij ieder liedje staat een korte tekst met daarin wie de tekst heeft gemaakt, wie de muziek heeft gecomponeerd en uit welk jaar het liedje komt. Daarna staat er een stukje tekst dat verwijst naar het boek en het moment waarop het liedje werd gebruikt. Van elk liedje staat de bladmuziek: gitaar-deel met akkoorden en de toon en pianobegeleiding. Ook staat bij elk liedje de tekst onder noten. Liedjes die in het boek staan zijn onder andere: “life let us cherish”, “oft in the silly night”, “Rock me to sleep”, “Oh, Susanna”, “Golden Years are passing by”, “Old Dan Tucker”, “Pop! Goes the Weasel”, “Uncle Sam’s Farm”, “America”, “in the Starlight”, “Wait for the wagon”, “Bonny Doon”, “Lily Dale”, “Merry, Merry Christmas” en “There is a Happy Land”. Er staan 62 liedjes in het boek.

Tekeningen:

Bij de meeste liedjes staan tekeningen van Garth Williams. Soms zijn het nieuwe tekeningetjes die nog niet zo bekend zijn en soms zijn het tekeningen die ook in de boeken terugkomen. De allereerste tekening is van het gezin Ingalls in het bos en vervolgens een plaatje van de blokhut en in de blokhut. Vervolgens: huisjes in het donker, een boom, Pa op zijn paard door de prairie, Ma aan het bessen plukken, Pa’s geweer, de schommelstoel met vioolkoffer, een lamp, de meisjes bij Ma die in de schommelstoel zit, een kat en de viool op tafel, de huifkar, de ketelwagen, paardenraces, Laura bij Pa op schoot, vogels, huizen in een sneeuwstorm, het gezin Ingalls rond de kachel, een kamp op de prairie, Oom met trompet, een man op een paard, een zingend meisje, de dansers bij grootvader, Ma begroet iemand, dansers, een man met geweer die danst, Almanzo die afscheid neemt van Laura bij de deur, Pa speelt viool voor een dansende Mr. Edwards, Laura helpt Ma met kaas maken, Pa speelt op zijn viool voor de meisjes, Mary en Laura spelen met een bal, een drukke stad, huisjes op de prairie, een kanon, Pa ontgint een veld, Almanzo en Laura in de buggy, een indiaan, bloemen, Pa met viool, een uil, een vogel op een tak, de wagen met het gezin voor de stad in Pepin, Laura in het gangpad van school, Pa in de nacht in de wagen, Pa schept sneeuw van het bed van de meisjes, een conducteur in de trein, Laura met de drinkkan, het herderinnetje, hertjes bij het water, Pa komt thuis en wordt geknuffeld door Mary en Laura, de kerstboom in de kerk, Pa schudt zijn vuist tegen de storm, Laura op een stoel, kerstkadootjes en – lekkers, de zangschool, de kerk, het uitgraven van de boze treindirecteur uit de locomotief in de sneeuw, de waterdrager en Ma die de meisjes instopt.

Eigen mening:

Zeer mooi boek!!! Gekregen van Kathy Glaser als verrassing met de post en eerste brief. Interessant muziek en lief. Heel fijn boek om te hebben. Ook de tekstjes zijn leuk. Ik heb het boek toevallig later nogmaals gekocht met een andere voorkant, ik heb het boek dus twee maal.

Summary:

This book collects musical excerpts from songs found in Laura Ingalls Wilder's books. The chapters are organized by love songs, hymns, patriotic songs, sad songs, dance songs, game songs, and familiar favorites. Each song includes a short text explaining who wrote the lyrics, who composed the music, and the year the song was written. This is followed by a short text section that refers to the book and the time the song was used. Sheet music for each song is included: guitar part with chords, the musical note, and piano accompaniment. Lyrics are also included under the notes. Songs in the book include: "Life Let Us Cherish," "Oft in the Silly Night," "Rock Me to Sleep," "Oh, Susanna," "Golden Years Are Passing By," "Old Dan Tucker," "Pop! Most of the songs feature illustrations by Garth Williams. Some are new, lesser-known illustrations, and others are drawings that appear in the books. The very first illustration is of the Ingalls family in the woods, followed by a picture of the log cabin and inside the cabin. Then: houses in the dark, a tree, Pa on his horse through the prairie, Ma picking berries, Pa’s rifle, the rocking chair with its violin case, a lamp, the girls with Ma sitting in the rocking chair, a cat and the violin on the table, the covered wagon, the kettle car, horse races, Laura on Pa’s lap, birds, houses in a snowstorm, the Ingalls family around the stove, a camp on the prairie, Uncle with a trumpet, a man on horseback, a singing girl, the dancers at Grandfather’s, Ma greeting someone, dancers, a man with a rifle, dancing, Almanzo saying goodbye to Laura at the door, Pa playing the violin for a dancing Mr. Edwards, Laura helps Ma make cheese, Pa plays his violin for the girls, Mary and Laura play ball, a busy town, houses on the prairie, a cannon, Pa clearing a field, Almanzo and Laura in the buggy, an Indian, flowers, Pa with the violin, an owl, a bird on a branch, the wagon with the family outside the town in Pepin, Laura in the aisle of the school, Pa in the wagon at night, Pa shoveling snow from the girls' bed, a conductor on the train, Laura with the water jug, the shepherdess, deer by the water, Pa coming home and being hugged by Mary and Laura, the Christmas tree in the church, Pa shaking his fist against the storm, Laura on a chair, Christmas presents and treats, the singing school, the church, digging the angry train director out of the locomotive in the snow, the water carrier, and Ma tucking the girls in.

My opinion:

A very nice book!!! Received this from Kathy Glaser as a surprise in the mail and with the first letter. Interesting music and sweet. A really nice book to have. The lyrics are also nice. I happened to buy it again later with a different cover, so I have it twice.
