Enkele van Laura’s artikelen zijn zeer belerend. Ze probeert lezers wel altijd wat mee te geven. Het gaat over de tijd waarin ze leeft, met verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen, tussen mensen in de stad en mensen in “the country”. Het gaat over karaktereigenschappen en ook haar liefde voor de natuur. De artikelen staan random door elkaar heen, ongedateerd. Er gaan er ook best een aantal over de 1^e wereldoorlog en de houding van Amerika daarin.

Tekeningen:

Er staan kleine, algemene tekeningen in het boek. Tekeningen van een oude auto, kuikentjes, een mandje met fruit, graan-halmen, koeien, een ploeg, machine, koffiemolen, huisje, konijn, mandje appels, apple-pie. De plaatjes zijn bij herhaling gebruikt.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 en gekregen met het pakket van Susan Duggan. Netjes boek met artikelen van Laura Ingalls Wilder die bij elkaar verzamelt zijn. Ik ben wel benieuwd.

Het is soms een taai boek, omdat Laura’s schrijfstijl echt jaren ’20 is. Sommige artikelen zijn ook moeilijk te begrijpen, sommige zijn goed, zoals die waarin ze haar liefde voor de natuur bespreekt of, mijn favoriet, het artikel dat iedereen in DeSmet onderzoekers zijn, omdat ze in de Lange Winter ontdekten dat je tarwe kunt malen in een koffiemolen en er dan brood van bakken.

Sommige artikelen kende ik al, sommige ook echt niet.

Ik vind het ook wel een schat om deze artikelen te hebben, omdat het echt schrijfsels van Laura zijn.

Some of Laura's articles are very pedantic. She always tries to give readers something. It is about the time in which she lives, with differences between men and women, between people in the city and people in “the country”. It is about character traits and also her love for nature. The articles are randomly mixed together, undated. There are also quite a few about the First World War and America's attitude to it.

Drawings:

There are small, general drawings in the book. Drawings of an old car, chicks, a basket of fruit, grain stalks, cows, a plow, machine, coffee grinder, house, rabbit, basket of apples, apple pie. The pictures have been used repeatedly.

Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 and received with Susan Duggan's package. Neat book with articles by Laura Ingalls Wilder that have been collected together. I am curious.

It is sometimes a tough book, because Laura's writing style is really 1920s. Some articles are also difficult to understand, some are good, like the one where she discusses her love for nature or, my favorite, the article that everyone in DeSmet are researchers because in the Long Winter they discovered that you can grind wheat in a coffee grinder and then use it to bake bread.

Some articles I already knew, some I really didn't.

I also think it is a treasure to have these articles, because they are really Laura's writings

Een mooie biografie over Laura waarin haar leven chronologisch wordt vertelt. Ook wordt vertelt zoals het werkelijk was en niet zoals in de boeken. Het vertelt over de reizen van de familie Ingalls, de ziekte van Mary, het vestigen in de DeSmet en de lange winter. Haar liefde en verloving met Almanzo en hun eerste jaren samen. Ook de jaren daarna in Spring Valley en Florida en daarna hun reis naar Mansfield. Hoe ze in Mansfield een leven opbouwen en hoe Laura op latere leeftijd besluit om te gaan schrijven over haar kinderjaren, omdat haar herinneringen en de verhalen van pa “te mooi zijn om vergeten te worden”.

Een mooie biografie over Laura Ingalls Wilder, geschreven door William Anderson. In de volgorde zoals het leven van de familie Ingalls en Laura is verlopen. Dus: eerst over de familie Quiner en Ingalls die leefden in de bossen van Wisconsin. Toen het huwelijk van Charles en Caroline en de geboorte van de kinderen. Vervolgens de verhuizing naar de prairie. Toen de vestiging aan Plum Creek en wat daar allemaal gebeurt is met de sprinkhanen en dat ze ook in Walnut Grove hebben gewoond. Vervolgens een stuk over het hotel in Burr Oak dat Pa Ingalls mee runde. Daarna opnieuw de terugkeer naar Walnut Grove en hoe ze daar een periode hun hoofd boven water hebben gehouden en over Mary's ziekte. Dan de laatste verhuizing naar Dakota Territory en hoe Laura als stadmeisje/ prairiemeisje was. Dan haar verkering, verloving en huwelijk met Almanzo en de eerste zware jaren. Hoe het echtpaar besluit dat ze de wereld willen zien en daarom een tijdje wonen in Spring Valley en zelfs in Florida. Hoe ze uiteindelijk naar Missouri vertrekken en Rocky Ridge kopen en opbouwen. Hoe Laura's schrijfcarriere ontstaat en ontwikkelt en hoe ze er toe komt om de kleine huis boeken te schrijven. En vervolgens haar laatste rustige jaren op Rocky Ridge Farm.

Tekeningen:

In het boek zijn foto’s opgenomen van de kinderjaren van Laura en van haar latere leven als ze ouders is. Tevens van enkele eigendommen. Mooie foto’s, al zijn het wat donkere kopieën.

Er staan geen plaatjes in het boek. Maar wel veel foto's in twee blokken. De foto's zijn helaas een beetje donker afgedrukt. De eerste serie bevat foto's van de familie Ingalls, de kinderen, maar ook het huis in Mansfield en het huis op Rocky Ridge.
De tweede serie foto's bevat foto's van Laura Ingalls op latere leeftijd en items van Laura en Almanzo, zoals de viool van Pa, de broodschaal, de familiebijbel, de klok en de lessenaar. De laatste foto is van het Rock House.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boekje, een van mijn eerste, dus toen wist ik nog heel weinig en was het een schat aan informatie en foto’s die ik niet kende. Goed en leesbaar geschreven door William Anderson.

Geen fictie, maar werkelijkheid. Op een prettige manier geschreven en interessant om te lezen.

A beautiful biography about Laura in which her life is told chronologically. It is also told as it really was and not as in the books. It tells of the Ingalls family's travels, Mary's illness, settling in the DeSmet and the long winter. Her love and engagement to Almanzo and their first years together. Also the following years in Spring Valley and Florida and then their journey to Mansfield. How they build a life in Mansfield and how Laura decides later in life to write about her childhood, because her memories and Pa's stories are "too good to be lost".

A nice biography about Laura Ingalls Wilder, written by William Anderson. In the order in which the lives of the Ingalls family and Laura unfolded. So: first about the Quiner and Ingalls families who lived in the big woods of Wisconsin. Then the marriage of Charles and Caroline and the birth of the children. Then the move to the prairie. Then the Plum Creek settlement and what happened there with the grasshoppers and that they also lived in Walnut Grove. Then a piece about the hotel in Burr Oak that Pa Ingalls helped run. Then again the return to Walnut Grove and about Mary's illness. Then the final move to Dakota Territory and what Laura was like as a city girl/prairie girl. Then her courtship, engagement and marriage to Almanzo and the first difficult years. How the couple decides that they want to see the world and therefore live for a while in Spring Valley and even in Florida. How they eventually move to Missouri and buy and build Rocky Ridge. How Laura's writing career arises and develops and how she comes to write the Little House books. And then her last quiet years at Rocky Ridge Farm.

Drawings:

The book contains photos of Laura's childhood and of her later life when she became parents. Also of some properties. Beautiful photos, although they are somewhat dark copies.

There are no pictures in the book. But a lot of photos in two blocks. Unfortunately the photos are printed a bit dark. The first series contains photos of the Ingalls family, the children, as well as the house in Mansfield and the house on Rocky Ridge.

The second series of photographs includes photographs of Laura Ingalls later in life and items belonging to Laura and Almanzo, such as Pa's violin, bread platel, family Bible, clock and lap desk. The last photo is of the Rock House.

Own opinion:

A beautiful book, one of my first, so I knew very little at the time and it was a wealth of information and photos that I did not know. Well and readable written by William Anderson.

Not fiction, but reality. Written in a pleasant way and interesting to read.

Een dun, A4-groot boekje met brieven van Laura en Rose aan elkaar. Het begint met een uitgebreide introductie, waarin de brief wordt herhaald die Laura voorlas tijdens haar speech in oktober 1937. Hierin vertelt ze over waarom ze de verhalen op is gaan schrijven en ook het verhaal van de Benders.
Uiteindelijk worden er stukken getoond uit 6 brieven tussen moeder en dochter. De stukken zijn aangepast en veranderd om ze makkelijker te maken om te lezen. Met name is de bedoeling dat de brieven gebruikt worden door leerkrachten als lesmateriaal.
De brieven beginnen op 5 februari 1937. De eerste brief is van Laura aan haar dochter en gaat over dat Laura een handgeschreven boekje heeft gevonden van ma en dat ze Grace gevraagd heeft naar de bloemen op de prairie. In een volgende brief van 23 maart vertelt Laura een verhaal over Almanzo die heel veel last had van zijn tanden tussen Yankton en Sioux Falls. Toen ze een tandarts tegenkwamen, ging Almanzo met twee passen tegelijk de trap op. De persoon die binnen was, zei dat hij de tand zou trekken, maar dat hij niet goed wist hoe hij dat moest doen. In ieder geval probeerde hij het en zette zijn knieën op Almanzo’s schouders. Uiteindelijk kwam de tand eruit en toen kwam de ECHTE tandarts binnen. Almanzo was woest en ging al scheldend de zaak uit en weigerde te betalen. Verder vertelt Laura daarna dat ze arm waren in Burr Oak en dat het moeilijk was om weer vooruit te komen als je eenmaal tekort had. Dat Mary ziek was. Het was een ziekte waarvan de dokter de naam niet had genoemd. Pas veel later leerde het gezin dat de oogzenuwen waren beschadigt en dat daar niets meer aan te doen was.
In oktober 1937 schrijft Rose terug. Ze schrijft onder andere over dat Harper's in de boeken de spelling heeft aangepast en sommige Amerikaanse woorden heeft veranderd in Engelse woorden. Rose is daar boos over. In december 1937 gaat Laura in op Rose's voorstel om Mary niet blind te laten worden. Ze wijst het af. Ze vindt dat Mary's blindheid er ook bij hoort en dat het de reden is waarom Laura lerares is geworden en niet Mary. Verder vertelt ze Rose dat ze, toen ze voor de tweede keer in Walnut Grove woonden, werkte in het hotel en zorgde voor een baby.
In januari 1938 schrijft Rose weer over hoe zij het ziet dat ze de waarheid verdraaien en aanpassen. De laatste brief is van Laura aan Rose, uit mei 1939. De vrouwen discussiëren over de titel van het kleine huis aan het Zilvermeer. Verder geeft Laura aan dat ze maar één versie heeft van de lange winter, omdat ze geen zin meer had in hem over te schrijven.
Op het eind van het boekje staan vragen die gebruikt kunnen worden door leerkrachten. De vragen gaan over de brieven, maar ook over de foto's.

Er is een vrij groot lettertype gebruikt in het boekje.

Tekeningen:

Er staan 6 foto's in het boek. Een foto van Laura en Rose. Verder een foto van het huis op Rocky Ridge in de winter. Een foto van Laura en Almanzo. En nog een foto van Almanzo aan het maaien met een paardenspan en een foto van de hooischuur.

Eigen mening:

Mooi boekje met echte brieven en daardoor ook nieuwe informatie. De foto’s zijn bekend. Maar dit is wel een mooi iets.

A thin, A4-sized book with letters from Laura and Rose to each other. It starts with an extensive introduction, repeating the letter that Laura read during her speech in October 1937. In it she talks about why she started writing down the stories and also the story of the Benders.

Ultimately, pieces from 6 letters between mother and daughter are shown. The pieces have been edited and changed to make them easier to read. In particular, the intention is that the letters are used by teachers as teaching material.

The letters start on February 5, 1937. The first letter is from Laura to her daughter and says that Laura has found a handwritten book from Ma and that she has asked Grace about the flowers on the prairie. In a subsequent letter dated March 23, Laura tells a story about Almanzo who had a lot of problems with his teeth between Yankton and Sioux Falls. When they encountered a dentist, Almanzo took the stairs two steps at a time. The person inside said he was going to pull the tooth, but he wasn't sure how to do it. At least he tried and put his knees on Almanzo's shoulders. Finally the tooth came out and then the REAL dentist came in. Almanzo was furious and left the shop swearing and refused to pay. Laura then goes on to say that they were poor in Burr Oak and that it was difficult to get ahead once you were short. That Mary was sick. It was a disease that the doctor had not mentioned. Only much later did the family learn that the optic nerves had been damaged and that nothing could be done about it.

In October 1937, Rose wrote back. She writes, among other things, that Harper's has adjusted the spelling in the books and changed some American words into English words. Rose is angry about that. In December 1937, Laura discuss Rose's proposal that Mary not go blind. She turns it down. She believes that Mary's blindness is also part of it and that it is the reason why Laura became a teacher and not Mary. She goes on to tell Rose that when they lived in Walnut Grove for the second time, she worked at the hotel and took care of a baby.

In January 1938, Rose wrote again about how she saw them distorting and adapting the truth. The last letter is from Laura to Rose, from May 1939. The women discuss the title of the small house on Silver Lake. Furthermore, Laura indicates that she only has one version of the long winter, because she no longer felt like writing about it.

At the end of the booklet there are questions that can be used by teachers. The questions are about the letters, but also about the photos.

A fairly large font has been used in the booklet.

There are 6 photos in the book. A photo of Laura and Rose. Also a photo of the house on Rocky Ridge in the winter. A photo of Laura and Almanzo. And another photo of Almanzo mowing with a team of horses and a photo of the hay barn.

Own opinion:

Nice book with real letters and therefore new information. The photos are known. But this is a beautiful thing.

Interviews zijn afgenomen bij Neta Seal, Nava Austin, Peggy en Erman Dennis, Emogene Fuge, Anna Gutschke en Carl Hartley, sr.

Verder worden er verschillende onderwerpen behandeld in het boek, zoals waarom Laura’s boeken zo mooi zijn, wat er gebeurd is met de familie Ingalls, over Rocky Ridge.

Veel informatie, ook wel interessant.

Het gaat over verschillende onderwerpen. Eerst over de verhuizing naar de Ozarks. Dat Laura en Almanzo teveel pech hadden gehad op de prairie en op zoek waren naar een ander klimaat. Dat ze hoopten dat het beter zou worden in Mansfield. In het begin was Laura verliefd op Rocky Ridge. Almanzo zag het niet meteen zitten. Maar ze kochten het land en gingen aan het werk. Uiteindelijk is Rocky Ridge een prachtige plaats geworden. Het vertrek van de familie is opgeschreven zoals Laura het mogelijk heeft ervaren, door haar ogen. Dat is wel mooi.

In het hele boek zijn tussendoor stukjes gebruikt die Laura zelf heeft geschreven en die passen bij het thema. Ook wordt vertelt dat, zeker in de begintijd, Mansfield eigenlijk een beetje achtergebleven gebied was. De mensen waren er stug. Er was weinig ontwikkeling. Ook zijn er stukjes te vinden van de hand van Almanzo.

In dit boek wordt het statement gemaakt dat de Kleine-huis Boeken zo vrolijk zijn, omdat Laura vrolijk was toen ze ze schreef. Ze was tevreden met het leven dat ze op dat moment leidde op Rocky Ridge. Daarom kon ze lief schrijven en het leven positief zien. Ook wordt ergens vertelt dat Laura ooit geweigerd heeft om Hollywood een film te laten maken van haar boeken. Ze zou het niet eens zijn geweest met veranderingen. Hoewel ze veel geld zou kunnen verdienen met de film, heeft ze dus geweigerd er aan mee te werken.

Er is een interview met Nava Austin, die Laura kende van de bibliotheek waar ze wekelijks kwam. Nava weet dat Laura op latere leeftijd de deur niet meer open deed, tenzij ze bezoek verwachtte. Ze hield niet van mensen die haar kwamen opzoeken omdat ze een bekende schrijver was. Ze hield er van als mensen om haar gaven als vriend

Er staan geen tekeningen of foto’s in het boek. Op de voorkant staat een foto van de buste van Laura op het plein in Mansfield.

Eigen mening:

Wel een mooi boek, interessante inhoud, maar ik lees niet zo graag de schrijfstijl van White. De interviews zijn interessant.

An interesting book in which several people who knew Laura were interviewed. It's question and answer, but very interesting.

Interviews were conducted with Neta Seal, Nava Austin, Peggy and Erman Dennis, Emogene Fuge, Anna Gutschke and Carl Hartley, Sr.

Furthermore, various topics are discussed in the book, such as why Laura's books are so beautiful, what happened to the Ingalls family, about Rocky Ridge.

Lots of information, also interesting.

It's about different topics. First about the move to the Ozarks. That Laura and Almanzo had had too much bad luck on the prairie and were looking for a different climate. That they hoped things would get better in Mansfield. At first, Laura was in love with Rocky Ridge. Almanzo didn't like it right away. But they bought the land and went to work. Ultimately, Rocky Ridge became a beautiful place. The family's departure is written as Laura may have experienced it, through her eyes. That's nice.

Throughout the book, pieces that Laura wrote herself have been used that fit the theme. It is also said that, especially in the early days, Mansfield was actually a somewhat backward area. The people were stiff. There was little development. There are also pieces by Almanzo.

This book makes the statement that the Little House Books are so cheerful because Laura was cheerful when she wrote them. She was content with the life she was currently living on Rocky Ridge. That's why she could write sweetly and see life positively. It is also said somewhere that Laura once refused to let Hollywood make a film of her books. She would not have agreed with changes. Although she could make a lot of money from the film, she refused to participate in it.

There is an interview with Nava Austin, who knew Laura from the library she visited every week. Nava knows that, later in life, Laura no longer opened the door unless she was expecting visitors. She didn't like people coming to see her because she was a famous writer. She loved it when people cared about her as a friend

There are no drawings or photos in the book. The front features a photo of Laura's bust in the square in Mansfield.

Own opinion:

A nice book, interesting content, but I don't really enjoy reading White's writing style. The interviews are interesting.

Een biografie over Laura. Hele kleine letters geschreven. Weer niet het fictieve verhaal, maar meer de werkelijkheid. Het grootste deel van het boek is gewijd aan Laura's kinder- en jeugdjaren en de tijd die ze doorbrengt met haar ouders en de reizen. Slechts een klein stuk gaat over het leven van haar en Almanzo.

Er zijn negen hoofdstukken en ze zijn ingedeeld in de plaatsen waar Laura Ingalls woonde als kind, dus de grote bossen, de prairie, Plum Creek, Burr Oak, Walnut Grove, Silver Lake en de gouden jaren en de jaren samen. Er wordt in chronologische volgorde vertelt over het leven van Laura. Het is een informatief boek en zeker interessant om te lezen. Over het laatste stuk van haar leven gaat slechts één hoofdstuk, dus dat is niet zo heel uitgebreid.

Ook staat er een tijdlijn in het boek en de adressen van de verschillende musea.

Tekeningen:

In het boek zijn foto’s opgenomen. Vooral de bekende foto’s van de familie Ingalls en Wilder. Van de viool en de zusjes samen. Van Rose en van het huis op Rocky Ridge. In het boek staan geen plaatjes, maar wel foto's van Laura, Almanzo, Rose, de familie Ingalls, het interieur van het huis in Mansfield, Grace, Carrie, de familie Wilder, de viool en Pa & Ma. Het zijn zwart-wit foto's, maar wel mooi om te zien en duidelijk.

Eigen mening:

Een geinig boekje, wel goed geschreven over het hele leven van Laura Ingalls. Mooie foto’s. Een van mijn eerste boeken, dus alle info was nieuw en belangrijk. Ook de foto’s.

A biography about Laura. Written in very small letters. Again not the fictional story, but more reality. Most of the book is devoted to Laura's childhood and youth and the time she spends with her parents and the travels. Only a small part is about her and Almanzo's life.

There are nine chapters and they are organized into the places where Laura Ingalls lived as a child, so the big woods, the prairie, Plum Creek, Burr Oak, Walnut Grove, Silver Lake and the golden years and the years together. Laura's life is told in chronological order. It is an informative book and certainly interesting to read. Only one chapter is about the last part of her life, so it is not very extensive.

There is also a timeline in the book and the addresses of the various museums.

Drawings:

Photos are included in the book. Especially the famous photos of the Ingalls and Wilder families. Of the violin and the sisters together. From Rose and from the house on Rocky Ridge. The book contains no pictures, but it does contain photos of Laura, Almanzo, Rose, the Ingalls family, the interior of the house in Mansfield, Grace, Carrie, the Wilder family, the violin and Ma & Pa. They are black and white photos, but nice to see and clear.

Own opinion:

A funny book, well written about the entire life of Laura Ingalls. Beautiful pictures. One of my first books, so all the info was new and important. Also the photos.

Dit boekje bevat allemaal hoofdstukken die gaan over Laura en Nellie Oleson. Het boekje bevat 9 hoofdstukken die eigenlijk allemaal afkomstig zijn uit het kleine huis aan de rivier. Het begint met dat Mary en Laura voor het eerst naar school gaan in de stad. Ze maken kennis met Nellie Oleson, die hen uitscheld voor "plattelands-kinderen". Laura vindt dat niet leuk. De dag daarna kopen Mary en Laura in de winkel van meneer Oleson een lei. Nellie en haar broertje Willie komen ook de winkel in en stoppen zich vol met snoep, zonder Mary en Laura ook maar een kruimel aan te bieden. Laura vindt dit maar heel gemeen. Bij het volgende hoofdstuk gaat het over het spelletje dat de meisjes spelen tijdens de pauze. Nellie wil altijd dat ze hetzelfde spelletje spelen: Ring-around-the-rosy, maar op een dag stelt Laura voor om Uncle John te doen. Nellie wordt heel boos en trekt Laura hard aan haar haren. Toch besluiten alle meisjes om een keer een ander spel te doen. Nellie loopt huilend weg. Dan worden de meisjes uitgenodigd voor een feestje bij Nellie Oleson in de stad. Mary en Laura hebben hun beste kleren aangetrokken en kijken hun ogen uit in het mooie huis van Nellie. Mooie, chique meubels, veel speelgoed en ook boeken. Nellie heeft zelfs een paar hele mooie poppen, maar Laura mag ze niet aanraken. Daarna gaat Laura in een hoekje zitten. Ze krijgt een boek van mevrouw Oleson vol plaatjes. Voor ze er erg in heeft wordt er limonade en cake uitgedeeld. Dan nodigen Mary en Laura hun vriendinnen uit voor een feestje op de prairie. Ma en de meisjes maken van tevoren sneeuwbollen. Mary en Laura gaan de meisjes tegemoet. Nellie Oleson is onaardig tegen Jack en ook tegen ma. Ze zegt dat ze natuurlijk niet haar beste jurk aan heeft gedaan voor het feestje. Intussen is Laura erg boos op Nellie en besluit haar terug te pakken. Dit kan als ze gaan spelen in de rivier. Laura plaagt de grote kreeft samen met haar vriendinnen en als ze wegrennen duwt ze Nellie richting het plekje waar de bloedzuigers zitten. Ze laat Nellie daar mooi een tijdje staan en als Nellie weer naar het heldere water komt, zitten er allemaal bloedzuigers op haar benen. Nellie moet erg huilen en de andere meisjes gillen. Alleen Laura moet lachen. In het eennalaatste hoofdstuk gaat het gezin Ingalls naar de stad. Het is winter en de meisjes hebben nieuwe jurken nodig. Terwijl ze in de winkel van Oleson zijn komt Nellie aan gelopen. Ze heeft een bontjasje aan en toont dit arrogant aan Laura. Ook zegt ze erbij dat Laura zoiets moois niet kan hebben met een boer als vader. Ma vertelt dat het weer tijd is voor de kerk en zondagsschool. Dat vindt Laura leuk, Zeker als Dominee Alden komt preken en hij zegt altijd iets vriendelijks tegen Mary en Laura. In het laatste hoofdstuk wacht Mary en Laura een verrassing. Ze gaan zomaar op een doordeweekse dag naar de kerk en daar blijkt een kerstboom te zijn. Het is kerstmis! Aan de boom hangen allemaal kadootjes en na de preek en dienst worden deze kadootjes uitgedeeld. Er hangen een heel mooi bontjasje met een mof in de boom en Laura kijkt er lang naar. Ze is heel blij verrast als zij het jasje en de mof krijgt. Daarna kan zij showen bij Nellie die geen mof heeft.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen in het boek zijn van Renée Graef. Er is een tekening van Laura en Mary die het plein opkomen en Nellie die daar aan de zijkant, met haar neus in de lucht, naar staat te kijken. Er is een tekening van Nellie en Willie die snoepjes eten uit de snoepton, terwijl Laura toekijkt. Het volgende plaatje is als Nellie Laura hard aan haar vlechten trekt omdat Laura een ander spelletje voorstelt. Dan een plaatje van alle kinderen rondom de ark van Noah in het huis van Nellie. Daarna zit Laura op een stoel met een boek in haar handen. Dan zie je hoe Laura en Jack hun vriendinnen tegemoet hollen. En daarna hoe Nellie vlakbij de kreeft loopt met haar rokken omhoog en Laura verderop in het water. Dan toont ma in de winkel stof aan Laura. De laatste tekening toont Laura met bonten cape en mof die ze laat zien aan Nellie.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje over Laura en Nellie met de bekende hoofdstukken. Het gaat mij vooral om de plaatjes. Het laatste plaatje is misschien wel de mooiste en eigenlijk ook nieuw. Veel van de tekening komen overeen met wat Garth Williams ooit tekende.

This booklet contains all chapters about Laura and Nellie Oleson. The book contains 9 chapters, all of which actually come from On the banks of Plum Creek. It starts with Mary and Laura going to school in the city for the first time. They are introduced to Nellie Oleson, who calls them "country girls". Laura doesn't like that. The next day, Mary and Laura go to Mr. Oleson's shop to buy a slate. Nellie and her brother Willie also enter the store and stuff themselves with sweets, without offering Mary and Laura even a crumb. Laura thinks this is very mean. The next chapter is about the game the girls play during recess. Nellie always wants them to play the same game: Ring-around-the-rosy, but one day Laura suggests they do Uncle John. Nellie gets very angry and pulls Laura hard by her hair. Yet all the girls decide to play a different game for once. Nellie walks away crying. Then the girls are invited to a party at Nellie Oleson's in town. Mary and Laura have put on their best clothes and are looking forward to seeing Nellie's beautiful house. Beautiful, chic furniture, lots of toys and also books. Nellie even has some very nice dolls, but Laura is not allowed to touch them. Then Laura sits down in a corner. She gets a book from Mrs. Oleson full of pictures. Before she knows it, lemonade and cake are being handed out. Then Mary and Laura invite their friends to a party on the prairie. Ma and the girls make snow globes in advance. Mary and Laura go to meet the girls. Nellie Oleson is unkind to Jack and also to Ma. She says that of course she didn't wear her best dress for the party. Meanwhile, Laura is very angry with Nellie and decides to pay it back to her. This can be done when they go to play in the river. Laura teases the big crab with her friends and when they run away she pushes Nellie towards the place where the leeches are. She leaves Nellie there for a while and when Nellie comes back to the clear water, there are all kinds of leeches on her legs. Nellie cries a lot and the other girls scream. Only Laura laughs. In the penultimate chapter, the Ingalls family goes to town. It's winter and the girls need new dresses. While they are in Oleson's store, Nellie arrives. She is wearing a fur jacket and arrogantly shows it to Laura. She also says that Laura cannot have something so beautiful with a farmer as a father. Ma tells the girls it's time for church and Sunday school again. Laura likes that, especially when Reverend Alden comes to preach and he always says something kind to Mary and Laura. In the final chapter, a surprise awaits Mary and Laura. They just go to church on a weekday and there turns out to be a Christmas tree. It's Christmas! There are all kinds of presents hanging on the tree and these presents are handed out after the sermon and service. There is a very beautiful fur coat with a muff hanging in the tree and Laura looks at it for a long time. She is very pleasantly surprised when she receives the jacket and muff. Then she can show to Nellie, who has no muff.

Drawings:

The drawings in the book are by Renée Graef. There is a drawing of Laura and Mary entering the square and Nellie standing to the side, with her nose in the air, watching them. There is a drawing of Nellie and Willie eating candy from the candy barrel while Laura watches. The next picture is when Nellie pulls Laura hard on her braids because Laura suggests another game. Then a picture of all the children around Noah's ark in Nellie's house. Then Laura sits on a chair with a book in her hands. Then you see how Laura and Jack run towards their friends. And then how Nellie walks near the crab with her skirts up and Laura further on in the water. Then Ma shows fabric to Laura in the store. The last drawing shows Laura with a fur cape and muff that she shows to Nellie.

Own opinion:

A small book about Laura and Nellie with the well-known chapters. For me it's mainly about the pictures. The last picture is perhaps the most beautiful and actually new. Many of the drawings are similar to what Garth Williams once drew.

Samenvatting:

Dit boekje bevat 8 hoofdstukken uit de welbekende verhalen die gaan over Mr. Edwards en Laura.

Verhaal 1 gaat over dat Pa en Ma samen de blokhut bouwen en dat de stam op Ma’s voet terecht komt, waardoor Ma niet meer kan helpen en de bouw dus niet opschiet.

Hoofdstuk 2 is A new Neighbor, waarin Pa contact maakt met Mr Edwards en de mannen besluiten samen een huis te bouwen. Als beloning blijft Mr Edwards eten en vervolgens danst hij op de muziek van Pa’s viool.

Hoofdstuk 3 gaat over dat Pa naar de stad is en Mr Edwards zo vriendelijk is om rond staltijd te komen kijken en het werk te doen. Maar Jack bewaakt het huis en jaagt mr. Edwards de houtstapel op.

Hoofdstuk 4 en 5 zijn natuurlijk de hoofdstukken over kerstmis op de prairie, waarbij er geen sneeuw ligt en de rivier te gezwollen is. Mr. Edwards onderneemt de tocht naar de stad en koopt lekkers en kadootjes voor Mary en Laura. Hij vertelt Mary en Laura over zijn ontmoeting met de kerstman, terwijl Ma alsnog de sokken vult.

Hoofdstuk 6 gaat over het vertrek van de familie Ingalls van de prairie en het afscheid dat ze nemen van Mr. Edwards, die verder gaat op een vlot over de rivier.

In hoofdstuk 7 komt Mr Edwards weer voorbij als pa zijn land bij DeSmet wil gaan registreren en het erg druk is bij het inschrijfkantoor. Mr. Edwards begint een gevecht om te zorgen dat Pa als eerste naar binnen kan om zijn land te claimen, want er blijken meer kapers op de kust.

In hoofdstuk 8 komt uit de Lange Winter. Pa gaat mee het spoor schoonmaken en brengt Mr. Edwards mee naar  huis voor het eten. Mr. Edwards geeft Mary in het geheim een biljet van 20 dollar en hij is alweer op de trein voor ze het ontdekken.

Tekeningen:

Er staan grote en kleine tekeningen in het boek. Zoals de tekeningen van Pa die naar Ma’s voet kijkt nadat de stam er op is gekomen. Een tekening van Mr Edwards die heel ver spuugt, terwijl Laura, Mary en Jack toekijken. Een pagina-grootte tekening van Jack die Mr. Edwards de houtstapel op heeft gejaagd. Een mooi plaatje van Mary en Laura in bed, die kijken hoe Ma de sokken ophangt voor kerstmis. Een plaatje van Mr. Edwards bij de kerstman. Dan een plaatje van Mary en Laura die afscheid nemen van Mr. Edwards op de prairie. Een paginagrote tekening van de mannen, oa Pa, voor de landoffice om land te claimen. En een klein plaatje van Laura en Carrie in winterkleding, die kijken hoe de mannen op de handkar het spoor schoonmaken.

Eigen mening:

Het is mooi dat deze hoofdstukken bij elkaar zijn gezet. Leuke tekeningen erbij, maar wel gebaseerd op de tekeningen van Garth Williams. Tekeningen zijn erg levendig. Een leuk, klein boekje, met bekende hoofdstukken.

This booklet contains 8 chapters from the well-known stories about Mr. Edwards and Laura.

Story 1 is about Ma and Pa building the log cabin together and the log landing on Ma's foot, which means Ma can no longer help and the construction therefore does not progress.

Chapter 2 is A new Neighbor, in which Pa makes contact with Mr. Edwards and the men decide to build a house together. As a reward, Mr. Edwards stays for dinner and then dances to the music of Pa's violin.

Chapter 3 is about Pa being in town and Mr Edwards kindly coming over around stable time to look and do the work. But Jack guards the house and chases Mr. Edwards into the woodpile.

Chapters 4 and 5 are of course the chapters about Christmas on the prairie, where there is no snow and the river is too swollen. Mr. Edwards makes the trip into town and buys treats and presents for Mary and Laura. He tells Mary and Laura about his meeting with Santa Claus, while Ma fills the socks.

Chapter 6 concerns the Ingalls family's departure from the prairie and their farewell to Mr. Edwards, who continues on a raft across the river.

In Chapter 7, Mr. Edwards passes by again when Pa wants to register his land in DeSmet and it is very busy at the registration office. Mr. Edwards starts a fight to ensure that Pa can go in first to claim his land, because there appear to be more pirates on the coast.

In chapter 8 comes from the Long Winter. Pa comes along to clean the track and brings Mr. Edwards home for dinner. Mr. Edwards secretly gives Mary a $20 bill and he is back on the train before they discover it.

Drawings:

There are large and small drawings in the book. Like the drawings of Pa looking at Ma's foot after the trunk has been fallen on it. A drawing of Mr Edwards spitting very far, while Laura, Mary and Jack watch. A page-size drawing of Jack chasing Mr. Edwards into the woodpile. A lovely picture of Mary and Laura in bed, watching Ma hang up the socks for Christmas. A picture of Mr. Edwards and Santa. Then a picture of Mary and Laura saying goodbye to Mr. Edwards on the prairie. A full-page drawing of the men, including Pa, in front of the land office to claim land. And a small picture of Laura and Carrie in winter clothes, watching the men on the handcart clean the track.

Own opinion:

It is nice that these chapters have been put together. Nice drawings, but based on the drawings of Garth Williams. Drawings are very vivid. A nice little book, with well-known chapters.
