Samenvatting:

Het is een mooi boek, mooie plaatjes. Tekst is eenvoudig en leesbaar. Eerst wordt globaal ingegaan op de familie Ingalls en de echte familie Ingalls. Daarna begint het hoofdstuk met een algemeen verhaal over het gebied in Kansas. Uitgediept over de familie Ingalls. Daarna gaan ze meer diep in op de tijd en wat er gebeurde en werd uitgezocht. Ook staat er een timeline. Het volgende hoofdstuk is meer over de tocht naar het Westen en waarom iedereen naar het Westen ging; de homestead act. Vervolgens staan er regelmatig recepten uitgewerkt in het boek. Met plaatjes. Het gaat over maaltijden die ma maakt. Er staat een recept in voor het maken van een nightcap of zachte zeep en het hoofdstuk eindigt met een liedje uit die tijd. Het volgende, derde, hoofdstuk is over de bouw van de blokhut en hoe dat ging. De tekst wordt dan gecombineerd met het verhaal, dus de komst van Mr. Edwards om te helpen. De doe-dingen bij dat hoofdstuk zijn weer recepten en hoe je een bezem maakt van wilgentenen. En natuurlijk Old Dan Tucker als liedje. Vervolgens gaat het over een dag op de prairie. Over wat Laura en Mary zagen en deden naast het helpen van Ma. Er waren genoeg gevaren op de prairie, zoals vuur, wolven en ziekte. Met vervolgens weer recepten (gedroogde bessen) en het planten van een moestuin. Het hoofdstuk eindigt met een slaapliedje. Hoofdstuk 5 is over de dieren op de prairie en dan vooral de gedomesticeerde dieren. Hoe pa aan een koe kwam, gaat het vooral over. Een bandana is een van de activiteiten die wordt beschreven. Dan komt er een hoofdstuk over Independence en waar het nou precies lag en hoe het groeide. Wederom volgen er recepten en over de rubber haarband. Vervolgens komt kerstmis aan bod. Er wordt beschreven dat het afkomt van Sinterklaas. Wederom recepten en als activiteiten papieren poppen maken. Het liedje is natuurlijk Jingle Bells. Dan komt er een stukje over de indianen. Waarbij de activiteiten kralen rijgen en borduren zijn. Hoofdstuk 9 gaat weer over de echte Laura en het schrijven van de boeken.

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan verschillende tekeningen. De tekeningen van Garth Williams zijn bekend, maar ingekleurd. Dat maakt ze weer mooier. Verder staan er nog lieve kleine tekeningen in die wel van Cathy Molly moeten zijn. Dat zijn tekeningetjes onder aan de bladzijde en bij de algemene informatie. De tekeningen maken het boek nog wel wat mooier.

Tekeningen in het boek zijn: indianen te paard, een blokhut, een meisje achter in de huifkar, Pa die de doek op het dak legt, de indianen die in een rij voorbij rijden, een wagenwiel, een Amerikaanse vlag, trein, telefoon, gloeilamp, de huifkar op de prairie, mais, een huifkar, gebakken bacon, een stapel pannenkoeken, een meisje met nachtmuts, een viool en naaigerei,  Pa die het dak maakt en Laura en Mary die zoeken naar de spijkers, gestapelde boomstammen, eten in een bord en pan, een twijg-bezem, Mary en Laura in het gras, een baby, een kampvuur, een wolf, een pot met bessen, een tuin, Pa met twee cowboys en de koe en kalf, een boekje, een bandana, Pa in de regen op de wagen, een hooibaal, postkoets en voorkant blokhut, eten op een bord, een meisje met een rubber haarband, een meisje met een sjaal, de kerstman in het donker met zijn muildier, een kerstman in de slee, een kerstboom, gepofte aardappelen op een bord, papieren poppen, indianen, tipi, bizon en een meisje met een kralenketting. Elk hoofdstuk heeft onder aan de bladzijde een klein tekeningetje van huisjes of bloemen.

In het boek staat ook een plattegrond van het kleine huis op de prairie. En een kaartje van Pepin naar Independence. En een plattegrond van de binnenkant de blokhut. Een kaartje van de route van het slachtvee,

Ook staan er foto’s in het boek van Pa en Ma en Mary, Laura en Carrie. Van Laura, Almanzo en Rose en het huis op Rocky Ridge. Er staan foto’s in van de replica van de blokhut en de binnenkant van deze blokhut. Nog een foto van een oudere Laura en Rose. En een foto van Garth Williams.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 op aanraden van verschillende mensen. Het boek ziet er erg mooi uit en is een combi tussen het verhaal en nieuwe, algemene informatie en recepten en doe-dingen. Mooi opgezet. Zeer netjes boek. Boek is wel leuk om te lezen, gaat niet heel diep in op het verhaal, maar is wel leuk gecombineerd met verhaal, liedjes, recepten en activiteiten. Het is zeker wel een interessant boek.

Hoofdstuk 4 eindigt met een slaapliedje dat ik nog niet kende.

Resume:

It is a beautiful book, beautiful pictures. Text is simple and readable. First, the Ingalls family and the real Ingalls family are briefly discussed. Then the chapter begins with a general story about the area in Kansas. Elaborated on the Ingalls family. Then they go into more detail about the time and what happened and was investigated. There is also a timeline. The next chapter is more about the journey to the West and why everyone went to the West; the homestead act. Subsequently, recipes are regularly elaborated in the book. With pictures. It's about meals that Ma makes. It contains a recipe for making a nightcap or soft soap and the chapter ends with a song from that time. The next, third, chapter is about the construction of the log cabin and how it went. The text is then combined with the story, so the arrival of Mr. Edwards to help. The things to do in that chapter are recipes and how to make a broom from willow wicks. And of course Old Dan Tucker as a song. Then it's about a day on the prairie. About what Laura and Mary saw and did besides helping Ma. There were plenty of dangers on the prairie, such as fire, wolves and disease. Followed by recipes (dried berries) and planting a vegetable garden. The chapter ends with a lullaby. Chapter 5 is about the animals of the prairie, especially the domesticated animals. It's mainly about how Pa got a cow. A bandana is one of the activities described. Then there is a chapter about Independence and where exactly it was located and how it grew. Once again there will be recipes and about the rubber hairband. Next comes Christmas. It is described as coming from Saint Nicholas. Again recipes and paper doll making activities. The song is of course Jingle Bells. Then there is a piece about the Indians. The activities include stringing beads and embroidery. Chapter 9 is again about the real Laura and writing the books.

Drawings:

The book contains several drawings. Garth Williams's drawings are well-known, but colored. That makes them more beautiful. There are also sweet little drawings that must be by Cathy Molly. These are drawings at the bottom of the page and with the general information. The drawings make the book even more beautiful.

Drawings in the book are: Indians on horseback, a log cabin, a girl in the back of the covered wagon, Pa putting the cloth on the roof, the Indians driving past in a line, a wagon wheel, an American flag, train, telephone, light bulb , the covered wagon on the prairie, corn, a covered wagon, fried bacon, a stack of pancakes, a girl with a nightcap, a violin and sewing kit, Pa making the roof and Laura and Mary looking for the nails, stacked tree trunks, food in a plate and pan, a twig broom, Mary and Laura in the grass, a baby, a campfire, a wolf, a pot of berries, a garden, Pa with two cowboys and the cow and calf, a book, a bandana, Pa in the rain on the wagon, a hay bale, stagecoach and front of a log cabin, food on a plate, a girl with a rubber headband, a girl with a scarf, Santa Claus in the dark with his mule, a Santa Claus in the sleigh, a Christmas tree , jacket potatoes on a plate, paper dolls, Indians, tepee, bison and a girl with a bead necklace. Each chapter has a small drawing of houses or flowers at the bottom of the page.

The book also contains a map of the Little House on the Prairie. And a ticket from Pepin to Independence. And a map of the inside of the log cabin. A map of the route of the slaughtered cattle,

There are also photos in the book of Ma and Pa and Mary, Laura and Carrie. Of Laura, Almanzo and Rose and the house on Rocky Ridge. It contains photos of the replica of the log cabin and the inside of this log cabin. Another photo of an older Laura and Rose. And a photo of Garth Williams.

 Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 on the recommendation of several people. The book looks very nice and is a combination of the story and new, general information and recipes and things to do. Nicely set up. Very neat book. The book is fun to read, does not go into the story very deeply, but is fun combined with story, songs, recipes and activities. It is certainly an interesting book.

Chapter 4 ends with a lullaby I didn't know yet.
