Samenvatting:

Het zesde deel uit de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Het gezin woont weer op de ontginning. Pa werkt in de stad als timmerman en Laura kan ook in de stad aan het werk als naaister. Laura denkt terug aan het leven op de ontginning na de lange winter, het werken in de tuin, haar wandelingen op de prairie met Mary. Ze werkt in de stad en maakt knoopsgaten in hemden. Pa en Ma hebben besloten dat Mary dit jaar naar de school voor blinden in Iowa gaat. Ze brengen Mary weg. Het huis is leeg zonder Mary, maar Laura, Carrie en Grace beginnen vast aan de grote schoonmaak. Voor de winter verhuisd het gezin weer naar de grote stad. Laura en Carrie gaan naar school. De lerares is dit jaar juffrouw Wilder en zij en Laura kunnen niet goed met elkaar opschieten. Hoewel Laura wel vriendinnen krijgt zoals Ida en Mary Power, komt ook Nellie Oleson weer terug. Dat is niet bepaald Laura’s vriendin. De meisjes maken onderling plezier, maar worden nogal eens gestoord door Nellie. In de stad gebeuren in de winter allemaal leuke dingen. Er wordt een letterkrans opgericht, waarna vele leuke avonden plaatsvinden. Tevens is er een kerk opgericht die de familie Ingalls bezoekt. Laura bereidt zich voor op de openbare les. Hierna krijgt ze onverwacht haar diploma voor lerares en kan verderop op de prairie les gaan geven.

Eigen mening:

Dit boek gekocht op 1-5-2023 toen we in Brussel waren. We liepen toevallig langs een tweedehands boekenwinkeltje en ik moest even binnen gaan kijken. Er stonden zoveel boeken! Ook in de kinderhoek. De kinderen werden al ongeduldig en kwamen kijken waar ik bleef. Ik keek nog een keer rond en ineens viel mijn oog op 4 boeken. In niets leek het op LIW, maar ik trok er een boek uit en dat waren ze. Er stonden in geen van de boeken plaatjes, alle vier waren in het Frans. Ik koos dit deel, omdat ik “kleine stad op de prairie” altijd leuk vond, maar “Een huis voor Laura” stond er ook in het Frans. Ik kan enkele titels wel vertalen, maar het hele boek in het Frans lezen, zal ik nooit doen. Toch was ik blij dat ik het boek had gevonden. Wat een toeval. Kosten: 4,50 euro.

The sixth part of the series, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The family lives again on the claim. Pa works in the city as a carpenter and Laura can also work in the city as a seamstress. Laura thinks back to life on the claim after the long winter, working in the garden, her walks on the prairie with Mary. She works in the city making buttonholes in shirts. Ma and Pa have decided that Mary will go to the school for the blind in Iowa this year. They take Mary away. The house is empty without Mary, but Laura, Carrie and Grace start the big cleaning. The family moves back to the city for the winter. Laura and Carrie go to school. The teacher this year is Miss Wilder and she and Laura do not get along well. Although Laura does gain friends such as Ida and Mary Power, Nellie Oleson also returns. That's not exactly Laura's friend. The girls have fun together, but are often interrupted by Nellie. All kinds of fun things happen in the city in winter. A letter wreath is erected, after which many fun evenings take place. A church has also been established that the Ingalls family attends. Laura prepares for public class. After this, she unexpectedly receives her teacher's diploma and can start teaching further on the prairie.

Own opinion:

Bought this book on May 1, 2023 when we were in Brussels. We happened to walk past a second-hand bookstore and I had to take a look inside. There were so many books! Also in the children's corner. The children were getting impatient and came to see where I was. I looked around again and suddenly my eye fell on 4 books. It looked nothing like LIW, but I pulled out a book and that's what they were. There were no pictures in any of the books, all four were in French. I chose this part because I always liked “little town on the prairie,” but “A house for Laura” was also in French. I can translate some titles, but I will never read the entire book in French. Still, I was glad I found the book. What a coincidence. Costs: 4.50 euros.
