Samenvatting:

Dit boek is over Almanzo die met zijn familie naar de jaarmarkt gaat. Zijn pompoen is er al heen gebracht en zijn zusjes nemen naai- en bakwerk mee. Samen met Vader kijkt Almanzo bij de paarden en schrikt van de ezels. Ze kijken bij de andere dieren en nemen plaats aan lange tafels om te eten. Dan volgt de prijsuitreiking en wint Almanzo’s pompoen een prijs. Ze kijken nog bij de wedstrijden en gaan pas heel laat naar huis.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn gemaakt door Jody Wheeler. Op de echte titelpagina zie je een reuze grote pompoen, het rode huis, de schuren en Almanzo met zijn handen in zijn kontzakken kijkend naar de bomen. Het eerste plaatje is bij de boerderij in Malone, Almanzo klimt in een boom. Vader komt aanlopen met een paard aan de teugel. Moeder en Eliza Jane zitten aardappels te schillen op de veranda bij de achterdeur. Royal sjouwt met emmers en Alice komt met manden naar de deur. Dan zit het hele gezin in de buggy op weg naar de jaarmarkt. Almanzo zit tussen Vader en Moeder op de bok. Iedereen draagt mooie kleren. Daarna allemaal plaatjes van de jaarmarkt en mensen en dieren en paarden. Het zijn plaatsjes van de markt. Vader en Almanzo brengen de paarden weg en lopen over de markt/ kermis. Vader en Almanzo kijken samen naar de paarden en ezels. Er is ook een tekening dat Almanzo schrikt van de ezels. Op de volgende tekeningen staan Vader en Almanzo te kijken naar de schapen. Dan zitten Vader en Almanzo aan tafels. Ze zitten tussen veel andere mensen en er staat veel taart voor hen klaar. Vervolgens gaan er veel plaatjes over de jury die de pompoenen beoordeeld.  Waarbij Almanzo staat te kijken als de jury bij zijn grote pompoen staat. De juryleden proeven de pompoen. Dan krijgt de grote pompoen een blauw lintje en Vader kijkt trots naar Almanzo. Vervolgens volgt er een plaatje van een wedstrijd waar Almanzo en Vader naar staan te kijken. En het laatste plaatjes is van dat ze in de nacht weer naar huis rijden. Op de allerlaatste bladzijde ligt Almanzo te slapen in bed met het blauwe lint bij zijn hoofd.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boekje, het verhaal komt uit Farmer Boy en is bekend. De tekeningen zijn mooi en lief en compleet. Je ziet een klein beetje dat het niet getekend is door Renee Graef maar door Jody Wheeler, maar de tekeningen zijn wel lief en levendig. Het is leuk dat de tekeningen in kleur zijn.

Resume:

This book is about Almanzo who goes to the fair with his family. His pumpkin has already been brought there and his sisters are bringing sewing and baking. Together with father, Almanzo looks at the horses and is frightened by the donkeys. They watch the other animals and sit down at long tables to eat. Then comes the awards ceremony and Almanzo's pumpkin wins a prize. They still watch the games and don't go home until very late.

Drawings:

The drawings are made by Jody Wheeler. On the real title page you see a giant pumpkin, the red house, the barns and Almanzo with his hands in his back pockets looking at the trees. The first picture is at the farm in Malone, Almanzo climbing a tree. Father approaches with a horse on the bridle. Mother and Eliza Jane are peeling potatoes on the back porch. Royal carries buckets and Alice comes to the door with baskets. Then the whole family is in the buggy on the way to the fair. Almanzo sits between Father and Mother on the box. Everyone wears nice clothes. Then all pictures of the fair and people and animals and horses. They arrives at the market. Father and Almanzo take the horses away and walk over the fair. Father and Almanzo watch the horses and donkeys together. There is also a drawing that Almanzo is frightened by the donkeys. In the following drawings, Father and Almanzo are looking at the sheep. Then Father and Almanzo are sitting at tables. They sit among many other people and there is a lot of cake waiting for them. Then there are many pictures about the jury that judges the pumpkins. Whereby Almanzo is watching when the jury stands at his large pumpkin. The judges taste the pumpkin. Then the big pumpkin gets a blue ribbon and Father looks proudly at Almanzo. Then there is a picture of a match that Almanzo and Father are watching. And the last pictures are of them driving home at night. On the very last page, Almanzo is asleep in bed with the blue ribbon at his head.

Own opinion:

A nice book, the story comes from Farmer Boy and is well known. The drawings are beautiful and sweet and complete. You can see a little bit that it is not drawn by Renee Graef but by Jody Wheeler, but the drawings are sweet and lively. It's nice that the drawings are in color.

Samenvatting:

Dit boekje heb ik twee keer, maar met een andere voorkant. De hoofdstukken en de tekeningen in het boek zijn hetzelfde.
Er zijn 9 hoofdstukken.
1. Kerst in het grote bos. Wat gaat over de voorbereidingen voor kerst in het kleine huis in het grote bos. Het maken van snoep van sneeuw, het maken van eten, het schoonmaken van het huis.
2. De neven en nichtjes. Dit hoofdstuk gaat over het arriveren van de familie in de blokhut in het grote bos. Mary en Laura kunnen spelen met de neefjes en nichtjes, onder andere spelen ze in de sneeuw. In de avond speelt Pa viool zodat iedereen kan gaan slapen.
3. Kerstmorgen in het grote bos. Met de kadootjes voor iedereen. De volwassenen hebben kadootjes voor elkaar gemaakt, de kinderen krijgen kadootjes in hun sokken. Laura is heel blij met haar mooie pop. Daarna eet de familie samen. Bij het ontbijt pannenkoekenmannetjes en nog een heerlijke lunch. Daarna moet de familie alweer vertrekken.
4. Kerstfeest op de prairie. De familie Ingalls woont op de prairie en het kerstfeest nadert. Het regent, maar er komt geen sneeuw en de meisjes maken zich zorgen dat de kerstman niet gaat komen. Ma stelt ze gerust, maar als blijkt dat de kreek overstroomt is, weten Mary en Laura dat de kerstman hen echt niet kan bereiken. Ze zijn teleurgesteld op kerstavond, hoewel Ma hen wel de sokken op laat hangen.
5. Meneer Edwards ontmoet de kerstman. Op kerstochtend wordt het gezin gewekt door geklop op de deur. Mr. Edwards is gekomen. Hij vertelt dat hij de kerstman heeft ontmoet en de kadootjes voor de meisjes heeft mee genomen. Terwijl Mary en Laura luisteren naar het verhaal van Mr Edwards, laat Ma de kadootjes in de sokken zakken. De meisjes krijgen zoveel mooie kadootjes dat ze sprakeloos zijn. Daarna wordt het een fijne dag met bezoek en lekker eten.
6. Kerstpaarden. Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over kerst bij de rivier. Tijdens de voorbereidingen praten Mary en Laura over wat ze allemaal willen van de kerstman, maar Ma geeft aan dat Pa paarden wil. De meisjes weten dat van hen verwacht wordt dat ze deze dan ook vragen, maar Laura is er niet blij mee.
7. Paarden en snoep. In de dagen voor kerst stelt Ma aan Mary en Laura voor om een ketting te maken voor Carrie. De ketting mag gemaakt worden van Ma’s knopenverzameling. De meisjes maken de mooiste ketting die ze kunnen. Uiteindelijk krijgen ze op kerstochtend allebei snoep in hun sokken en Carrie krijgt de ketting. Maar na het ontbijt mogen Mary en Laura met Pa naar de stal, waar ze de mooie paarden zien en er op mogen rijden
8. Geheimen en verrassingen. In de inleiding van dit hoofdstuk wordt duidelijk gemaakt dat de familie weer is verhuisd en dat Mary en Laura groot zijn en dat Grace nu de baby is. Ze wonen in het landmetershuis op de prairie. Het hoofdstuk gaat over de kadootjes die iedereen voor elkaar bedenkt en hoe ze die maken. Ze maken samen een mooie jas voor Grace. Op kerstavond speelt Pa viool als ze buiten iemand horen. Het blijken meneer en mevrouw Boast te zijn.
9. Een vrolijk kerstfeest. Laura heeft even gedacht aan het bezoek en alle verborgen kadootjes, maar Ma is degene die de oplossing bedenkt. Bij het ontbijt liggen de pakjes op de borden. Na het ontbijt moeten de karweitjes gedaan worden en daarna is er heerlijke kerstmaaltijd. Na de maaltijd verzamelt iedereen rondom de kachel en blijken Mr en Mrs Boast popcorn meegenomen te hebben.

Tekeningen:

De kleine tekeningetjes komen vaak overeen met tekeningen van Garth Williams. Ma die een zakdoekje krijgt tijdens kerstfeest. Pa die viool speelt temidden van zijn gezin. Mary en Laura die een knopenketting maken. Ma die staat te strijken en met de meisjes het kerstfeest bespreekt. Een plaatje van Meneer Edwards die kadootjes krijgt van de kerstman. Laura en Mary die spelen met papieren poppen. Laura met pop Charlotte. De neefjes en nichtjes die sneeuwpoppen maken. Laura en Mary die suikergoed maken. Hoewel de illustraties overeenkomen met die van Garth Williams, zijn ze net wat anders en erg levendig.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met hoofdstukken uit de echte boeken. Het gaat mij vooral om de tekeningen en die zijn lieflijk. Hoe het kan dat ik dit boekjes dubbel heb, weet ik niet en het is eigenlijk ook niet nodig. De verhalen zijn bekend, maar de tekeningen zijn nieuw.

I have this booklet twice, but with a different front cover. The chapters and the drawings in the books are the same.

There are 9 chapters.

1. Christmas in the big Woods. What is about the preparations for Christmas in the little house in the big woods. Making candy from snow, making food, cleaning the house.

2. The cousins. This chapter is about the arrival of the family in the log cabin in the big woods. Mary and Laura can play with the nephews and nieces, including playing in the snow. In the evening Pa plays the violin so that everyone can go to sleep.

3. Christmas morning in the big woods. With gifts for everyone. The adults have made presents for each other, the children get presents in their socks. Laura is very happy with her beautiful doll. Then the family eats together. Pancake men for breakfast and another delicious lunch. Then the family has to leave again.

4. Christmas on the Prairie. The Ingalls family lives on the prairie and Christmas approaches. It's raining, no snow is coming and the girls worry that Santa isn't coming. Ma reassures them, but when it turns out that the creek has flooded, Mary and Laura know that Santa really can't reach them. They are disappointed on Christmas Eve, although Ma does let them hang up their stockings.

5. Mr. Edwards meets Santa Claus. On Christmas morning, the family is awakened by a knock on the door. Mr. Edwards has come. He says he met Santa and brought the presents for the girls. While Mary and Laura listen to Mr Edwards' story, Ma put the presents into the stockings. The girls receive so many beautiful gifts that they are speechless. After that it will be a nice day with a visitor and good food.

6. The Christmas horses. The next chapter is about Christmas by the river. During the preparations, Mary and Laura talk about what they all want from Santa, but Ma indicates that Pa wants horses. The girls know they are expected to ask horses, but Laura isn't happy about it.

7. Horses and candy. In the days leading up to Christmas, Ma suggests to Mary and Laura that they make a necklace for Carrie. The necklace may be made from Ma's button collection. The girls make the prettiest necklace they can. In the end, on Christmas morning, they both get candy in their socks and Carrie gets the necklace. But after breakfast, Mary and Laura are allowed to go to the stable with Pa, where they see the beautiful horses and are allowed to ride them

8. Secrets and surprises. In the introduction to this chapter it is made clear that the family has moved again and Mary and Laura are grown up and Grace is now the baby. They live in the surveyor's house on the prairie. The chapter is about the gifts that everyone thinks of for each other and how they make them. Together they make a beautiful coat for Grace. On Christmas Eve, Pa is playing the violin when they hear someone outside. It turns out to be Mr. and Mrs. Boast.

9. A Merry Christmas. Laura has thought about the visit and all the hidden presents, but Ma is the one who comes up with the solution. At breakfast, the packages are on the plates. After breakfast the chores have to be done and then there is a delicious Christmas meal. After the meal everyone gathers around the stove and Mr and Mrs Boast appear to have brought popcorn.

Drawings:

The small drawings often correspond to drawings by Garth Williams. Ma getting a handkerchief at the Christmas party. Pa playing the violin in the midst of his family. Mary and Laura making a button chain. Ma doing her ironing and discussing Christmas with the girls. A picture of Mr. Edwards receiving presents from Santa Claus. Laura and Mary playing with paper dolls. Laura with doll Charlotte. The nieces and nephews who make snowmen. Laura and Mary making candy with snow. While the illustrations match those of Garth Williams, they are slightly different and very lively.

Own opinion:

A thin booklet with chapters from the real books. I especially like the drawings and they are lovely. How it is possible that I have these booklets twice, I do not know and it is actually not necessary. The stories are familiar, but the drawings are new.

Dit dunne  kinderboekje vertelt het verhaal over het kerstfeest in de grote bossen. Dat Ma en de meisjes de voorbereidingen doen voor het kerstfeest met koekjes bakken en sneeuwsuikergoed maken. Dan komt de familie op bezoek. Tante Eliza, Oom peter en de neefjes en nichtjes. De kinderen spelen buiten in de sneeuw en tegen bedtijd hangen ze de sokken op. De volgende ochtend heeft de kerstman kadootjes gebracht. Laura is het gelukkigst van allemaal, want ze heeft een pop gekregen. Daarna bakt Ma pannenkoekenmannetjes. Na het uitgebreide eten gaat de familie weer naar huis.

Tekeningen:

Er staan weer vele mooie tekeningen in van Renee Graef. Van het kleine huis helemaal bedekt met sneeuw tussen de bomen. Een konijn springt van het plaatje weg. De volgende tekening is van het huis in de sneeuw en Laura die door het raam kijkt. De volgende pagina toont het hele gezin Ingalls voor de open haard in de blokhut. Met een lamp en boek op tafel, Pa met Carrie in de armen en Ma in de schommelstoel. Daarna komt de tekening van Pa die Laura een dikke knuffel geeft met zijn jas nog aan. Op de volgende bladzijde zit  Carrie in haar bedje te spelen, terwijl Mary en Laura de lepel van het koekjesbakken aflikken en Ma een schaal met koekjes vast heeft. Daarna komt de bekende tekening dat Laura en Mary toekijken bij het suikergoed maken van sneeuw. Daarna arriveert de familie in de slee, dik ingepakt met twee paarden voor de slee. Op de volgende bladzijde begroeten de twee families elkaar in de blokhut. Daarna wordt er in de sneeuw gespeeld. De kinderen maken sneeuwengeltjes. Dan een tekening dat ze allemaal slapen in verschillende bedden De sokken hangen voor de haard. Daarna komt de bladzijde dat ze allemaal hun kadootjes bewonderen. In alle sokken zitten kadootjes. Laura ziet haar pop. Op de schoorsteenmantel staat het herderinnetje. Daarna is iedereen wakker, Laura wiegt haar pop, de jongen zuigt aan de zuurstok, de andere meisjes hebben wanten in hun handen. Dan de tekening dat Ma de pannenkoekenmannetjes bakt. De volgende tekening is van drie meisjes, liggend op de houten vloer voor de haard en kijkend in een boek. Laura heeft haar pop vast, Mary heeft haar wanten aan en het derde meisje heeft de zuurstok in haar hand. De laatste grote tekening is van de familie Ingalls voor hun huis en dat ze de familie uitzwaaien. Ma heeft Carrie op de arm en Laura heeft haar pop vast. De allerlaatste tekening is een stilleven van wanten, pop en zuurstok op de lappendeken tegen het kussen aan gezet.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boekje vooral vanwege de tekeningen. Lieflijk. De tekeningen zijn zo leuk om naar te kijken, het beeld komt bijna tot leven. Ik heb deze boekjes echt alleen voor de tekeningen, want het verhaal is al bekend.

This thin children's book tells the story of Christmas in the big woods. That Ma and the girls prepare for the Christmas party with baking cookies and making snow candy. Then the family comes to visit. Aunt Eliza, Uncle Peter and the cousins. The children play outside in the snow and hang their socks at bedtime. The next morning Santa brought presents. Laura is the happiest of all, because she got a doll. Then Ma bakes pancake-men. After the extensive meal, the family goes home.

Drawings:

There are again many beautiful drawings by Renee Graef. From the little house all covered in snow among the trees. A rabbit jumps away from the picture. The next drawing is of the house in the snow and Laura looking through the window. The next page shows the entire Ingalls family in front of the fireplace in the log cabin. With a lamp and book on the table, Pa with Carrie in his arms and Ma in the rocking chair. Then comes the drawing of Pa giving Laura a big hug with his coat still on. On the next page, Carrie is playing in her crib, while Mary and Laura lick the biscuit spoon and Ma holds a bowl of biscuits. Then comes the famous drawing of Laura and Mary watching candy made from snow. Then the family arrives in the sleigh, thickly packed with two horses for the sleigh. On the next page, the two families greet each other in the cabin. Then the children play in the snow. The children make snow angels. Then a drawing that they all sleep in different beds. The stockings hang in front of the fireplace. Then comes the page where they all admire their presents. There are gifts in all stockings. Laura sees her doll. The shepherdess is on the mantelpiece. Then everyone is awake, Laura rocks her doll, the boy sucks the candy cane, the other girls have mittens in their hands. Then the drawing of Ma baking the pancake-men. The next drawing is of three girls, lying on the wooden floor in front of the fireplace and looking in a book. Laura is holding her doll, Mary is wearing her mittens and the third girl is holding the candy cane. The last large drawing is of the Ingalls family in front of their house, waving goodbye to the family. Ma has Carrie on her arm and Laura has her doll. The very last drawing is a still life of mittens, doll and candy cane placed on the patchwork quilt against the pillow.

Own opinion:

A beautiful book especially because of the drawings. lovely. The drawings are so nice to look at, the image almost comes to life. I really only have these books for the drawings, because the story is already known.

Een heel dun boekje met volop informatie over het claimen van land in de U.S. ten tijde van de homestead-act. Heel veel feitelijke informatie, verweven met de informatie over Pa Ingalls en zijn land.

Tekeningen:

Er is maar 1, wat vage, tekening bij het eerste begin. Van een man en vrouw die land ontginnen. Verder zijn het vooral raster-tekeningen van de gebieden, zoals ze waren opgedeeld.

Eigen mening:

Zeer interessante achtergrondinformatie over hoe Pa aan zijn land kwam. Het is goed geschreven, leesbaar, ondanks de vele feiten.

Resume:

A very thin booklet with plenty of information about claiming land in the U.S. at the time of the homestead act. Loads of factual information intertwined with information about Pa Ingalls and his claim.

Drawings:

There is only 1, somewhat vague, drawing at the very beginning. Of a man and woman clearing land. Furthermore, there are mainly grid drawings of the areas as they were divided.

Own opinion:

Very interesting background information on how Pa got his land. It is well written, readable, despite the many facts.

Er staan 8 hoofdstukken in dit boekje.
1. Zussen
Caroline en Martha zijn bezig met de ochtendklusjes. Het halen van water, het verzamelen van hout. Ze maken samen lol en plagen elkaar. Het is wasdag. Als alle klusjes gedaan zijn, moet Martha naar bed. Haar jurk moet worden gewassen en ze heeft maar 1 dagelijkse jurk. Caroline heeft er een hekel aan om de jurken van haar zus te krijgen, maar op wasdag is ze daar altijd blij mee, omdat zij twee dagelijkse jurken heeft. Caroline helpt moeder met de was en kijkt tussendoor bij Martha.
2. Sneeuwspelletjes
Het is winter en als de ochtendklussen zijn gedaan leren Martha en Caroline aan de tafel in het huis. De jongens Joseph en Henry zijn naar school. De kinderen hebben eigenlijk geen tijd meer om samen te spelen. Moeder belooft dat, als de jongens op tijd thuis zijn, ze allemaal nog buiten mogen spelen. Ineens zijn de jongens er. De meester had ze vroeg naar huis gestuurd omdat een andere leerling een sneeuwbal op zijn stoel had gelegd en zich niet wilde laten straffen. Uit woede stuurde de leraar iedereen vroeg naar huis. Nu is er tijd om een spelletje in de sneeuw te spelen met z'n vieren.
3.Zondagse jurken
Moeder krijgt een uitnodiging om weer eens mee te gaan naar de kerk met het hele gezin en ze besluit meteen om nieuwe jurken te gaan maken. Bij het passen van de jurken blijken die van Martha en Caroline niet meer te passen. Caroline krijgt de oude van Martha die versleten is, maar gerepareerd en ingekort kan worden. Martha krijgt een heel nieuwe, van prachtige, blauwe stof. Caroline is jaloers en vindt het niet eerlijk. Moeder doet haar best op de jurk voor Caroline en dat scheelt wel iets, maar de blauwe jurk blijft nieuw en mooier. Als ze naar de kerk gaan moeten de kinderen schoenen aan. De schoenen van Caroline passen nog maar net, maar die van Martha passen eigenlijk niet. Moeder staat er op dat Martha schoenen aan doet, of ze nu passen of niet en ook niet als haar tenen eruit barsten. Ondanks de mooie jurk maakt dat Martha ongelukkig.
4.Zondag
Dan zijn ze bij de kerk. Caroline ontdekt dat Martha haar schoenen heeft uit gedaan, maar besluit er niets over te zeggen. Martha doet eerst heel voorzichtig, zodat moeder niet ziet dat ze geen schoenen aan heeft. Als ze dat vergeet en moeder ziet het, wordt moeder heel boos. Er zijn ook nog andere meisjes die Martha uitlachen en tegen hen neemt Caroline het op om haar zusje te beschermen. De volgende zondagen moet Martha thuisblijven, wat natuurlijk zonde is dat niemand de blauwe jurk ziet.
5. Beginnen op school
Caroline wil heel graag naar school en kan eigenlijk niet wachten. Dan vertelt Martha dat school niet leuk is en de leraar heel onaardig kan zijn. Dit maakt Caroline bang. Hierdoor treuzelt ze en is minder enthousiast. Uiteindelijk verraad Martha haar bij grootmoeder, dat ze bang is. Moeder spreekt de meisjes toe en dan kunnen ze naar school.
6. Eerste schooldagen
Martha en Caroline lopen naar school en Caroline is langzaam. Martha spoort haar aan en bekend uiteindelijk dat ze school ook spannend vindt. Op het plein zien ze de meisjes die Martha hebben uitgelachen op de zondag. Martha vertelt ze nog maar eens dat ze nu en de rest van de zomer geen schoenen draagt. Als de bel luidt, wordt duidelijk dat ze een juf hebben en geen meester. Dat is voor Caroline een hele opluchting.
7. Een nieuwe vriendin
De meisjes nemen plaats in de klas. Dan staat er een verlegen meisje alleen te kijken en Martha en Caroline laten haar bij hen plaatsnemen. Het meisje heet Anna. De juf is vriendelijk en inventariseert wat iedereen kan. Anna begint ook net. In de pauze vragen de meisjes of Anna met hen naar huis komt om te eten en als ze dat doet hebben ze allemaal plezier.
8. Haastig
De meisjes eten thuis en als moeder vraagt hoe de schooldag was, is Caroline erg enthousiast. Ze kan niet wachten om terug te gaan naar school nu ze een nieuwe vriendin heeft.

Tekeningen:

Er staan weer mooie tekeningen in het boekje. Levendig en enthousiast. De tekeningen zijn van Doris Ettlinger. De eerste tekening is van Martha en Caroline die hout verzamelen in het bos. De tweede tekening is van de vier kinderen in de sneeuw die een cirkel maken. De derde tekening is van Caroline in de kamer in een te lange jurk. Ze kijkt sip naar een te lange mouw. De vierde tekening is voor de kerk. Twee meisjes stan te lachten en wijzen naar Martha die onder haar jurk geen schoenen aan heeft. Caroline staat met een boze uitdrukking op haar gezicht naast Martha. De vijfde tekening is van Ma die de zonnehoed onder Caroline’s kin strikt. Een zesde tekening is van de meisjes die arriveren bij school, waar heel veel kinderen in het gras spelen. De zevende tekening is van een meisje dat staat te wachten en de andere kinderen zitten op banken. De achtste tekening is van Caroline die het nieuwe meisje voorstelt aan moeder samen met Martha. Ieder hoofdstuk heeft een eigen tekening.

1. Sisters

Caroline and Martha are doing morning chores. Fetching water, collecting wood. They have fun together and tease each other. It's laundry day. When all the chores are done, Martha has to go to bed. Her dress needs to be washed and she only has 1 daily dress. Caroline hates getting her sister's dresses, but she's always happy about that on laundry day, as she has two everyday dresses. Caroline helps Mother with the laundry and checks on Martha in between.

2. Snow games

It is winter and when the morning chores are done, Martha and Caroline are learning at the table in the house. The boys Joseph and Henry are at school. The children don't really have time to play together anymore. Mother promises that if the boys are home in time, they can all still play outside. Suddenly the boys are there. The master had sent them home early because another student had put a snowball on his chair and did not want to be punished. Out of anger, the teacher sent everyone home early. Now it's time to play a game in the snow with the four of them.

3.Sunday dresses

Mother receives an invitation to go to church again with the whole family and she immediately decides to start making new dresses. When trying on the dresses, those of Martha and Caroline no longer fit. Caroline gets the old one from Martha which is worn out but can be repaired and shortened. Martha gets a whole new, beautiful, blue cloth. Caroline is jealous and doesn't think it's fair. Mother does her best on the dress for Caroline and that makes a difference, but the blue dress remains new and more beautiful. When they go to church, the children have to wear shoes. Caroline's shoes barely fit, but Martha's don't actually fit. Mother insists that Martha wear shoes whether they fit or not, or if her toes burst out. Despite the beautiful dress, it makes Martha unhappy.

4.Sunday

Then they are at the church. Caroline discovers that Martha has taken off her shoes, but decides not to say anything about it. Martha is very careful at first so that Mother does not see that she has is wearing no shoes. When she forgets that and Mother sees it, Mother gets very angry. There are also other girls who make fun of Martha and Caroline takes it up against them to protect her sister. The following Sundays Martha has to stay at home, which of course is a shame that no one sees the blue dress.

5. Start at school

Caroline really wants to go to school and can't wait. Then Martha tells that school is not fun and the teacher can be very unkind. This scares Caroline. This causes her to hesitate and is less enthusiastic. In the end, Martha betrays her to grandmother, that she is afraid. Mother speaks to the girls and then they can go to school.

6. First days of school

Martha and Caroline walk to school and Caroline is slow. Martha encourages her and eventually confesses that she also finds school exciting. In the square they see the girls who laughed at Martha on Sunday. Martha tells them again that she won't be wearing shoes now and for the rest of the summer. When the bell rings, it becomes clear that they have a teacher and not a master. That is a great relief for Caroline.

7. A new girlfriend

The girls are in class. Then a shy girl stands alone watching and Martha and Caroline let her sit with them. The girl's name is Anna. The teacher is friendly and makes an inventory of what everyone can do. Anna is also just starting. During intermission the girls ask Anna to come home with them for dinner and when she does they all have fun.

8. Hastily

The girls have dinner at home and when Mother asks how the school day was, Caroline is very excited. She can't wait to go back to school now that she has a new girlfriend.

Drawings:

There are beautiful drawings in the book. Lively and enthusiastic. The drawings are by Doris Ettlinger. The first drawing is of Martha and Caroline collecting wood in the woods. The second drawing is of the four children in the snow making a circle. The third drawing is of Caroline in the room in a dress that is too long. She looks glumly at a sleeve that is too long. The fourth drawing is before the church. Two girls laugh and point to Martha who has no shoes under her dress. Caroline stands next to Martha with an angry expression on her face. The fifth drawing is of Ma tying the sun hat under Caroline's chin. A sixth drawing is of the girls arriving at school, where many children are playing in the grass. The seventh drawing is of a girl waiting and the other children sitting on benches. The eighth drawing is of Caroline introducing the new girl to Mother along with Martha. Each chapter has its own drawing.

Own opinion:

A booklet with well-known chapters from the Caroline series. Dear drawings.

Het gaat over de reis van Pepin, Wisconsin naar de prairie. Geschreven uit het gezichtspunt van Ma. Ma wil eigenlijk helemaal niet weg van de familie en vindt alles kommer en kwel. Dan is ze ook nog net zwanger en ze mist hulp. Ze vindt Pa maar niets, die altijd zo optimistisch is. In het boek wordt de voorkeur van Ma voor Mary boven Laura ook duidelijk. De reis is moeilijk en zwaar en nat. Ma vindt de huifkar te klein.

Als ze zich dan vestigen op de prairie wordt het verhaal wel iets beter als het huis is gebouwd. Mr Edwards komt voorbij. Het kerstfeest vanuit het oogpunt van Ma is wel mooi. Dat volwassenen dat toch anders beleefden dan kleine Laura. Maar Ma’s afkeer van de indianen, de zorgen, de geboorte van Carrie en het zware leven komen duidelijk naar voren in het boek. Verder wordt er ook een paar keer de liefde bedreven in het boek.

Er staan geen tekeningen in het boek.

Eigen mening:

Ik heb het boek in 2020 aangeschaft. Amerikanen zijn er lovend over, maar ik vond het niet fantastisch. Ik heb me er echt een beetje doorheen moeten worstelen. Het eind ging wel, maar ik vond het over-all nogal negatief. Het bezoedeld een beetje het lieve beeld van Caroline. Verder wordt er ook een paar keer de liefde bedreven in het boek, wat eigenlijk niet past. Het is gewoon over all geen positief boek. Een leesboek, maar ik heb me er doorheen geworsteld. Zeker het begin is allemaal erg negatief.

It's about the journey from Pepin, Wisconsin to the prairie. Written from Ma's point of view. Ma doesn't really want to leave the family at all and thinks everything is doom and gloom. Then she is also just pregnant and she lacks help. She doesn't like Pa, who is always so optimistic. Ma's preference for Mary over Laura also becomes apparent in the book. The journey is hard and heavy and wet. Ma thinks the covered wagon is too small.

If they then settle on the prairie, the story will get a little better when the house is built. Mr Edwards passes by. Christmas from Ma's point of view is beautiful. That adults experienced it differently than little Laura. But Ma's distaste for the Indians, the worry, the birth of Carrie and the hard life are clearly visible in the book.

There are no drawings in the book.

Own opinion:

I purchased the book in 2020. Americans praise it, but I didn't think it was fantastic. I really had to struggle through it a bit. The ending went well, but I thought it was rather negative overall. It tarnishes Caroline's sweet image a bit. Furthermore, love is also made a few times in the book, which does not really fit. It's just not a good book at all. A reading book, but I struggled through it. Certainly the beginning is all very negative.

Dit is het Amerikaanse boek van "het kleine huis bij het Zilvermeer"
Het boek is van iemand persoonlijk geweest en ziet er nog heel goed uit.
Het boek begint met een kleine terugblik. In deze tijd heeft het gezin Ingalls te maken gehad met ziekte, waardoor Mary blind is geworden. Pa wil al graag weg van de prairie, en krijgt het aanbod om verder naar het Westen voor de spoorweg te gaan werken. Terwijl Pa vertrekt, helpt Laura Ma met de zorg voor Mary, Carrie en Grace. Uiteindelijk gaan ze met de trein achter Pa aan. De prairie in Dakota is nog erg ongerept en Laura geniet van de natuur. Tevens maakt ze in het spoorwegkamp een vriendin, hoewel ze weinig te maken heeft met het echte werk aan de spoorweg. Voordat de winter invalt krijgt Pa het aanbod om met zijn gezin in het landmetershuis te gaan wonen. Het gezin neemt het aanbod aan en trekt in het ruime huis. De winter is heerlijk rustig en al snel krijgen ze bezoek van de familie Boost, met wie ze hecht bevriend raken. Zodra het lente wordt, komt er een stormloop op het land en zorgen Ma en Laura voor de vele gasten die in hun huis onderdak zoeken. Zodra Pa een huis in de stad heeft gebouwd, verhuizen ze daar naar toe. Het boek eindigt met dat de familie Ingalls op hun eigen stuk grond gaan wonen.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen in dit boek zijn van Helen Sewell en Mildred Boyle. Zeer regelmatig staan er in het boek de onbekende, streperige tekeningen. Ze staan meestal op een halve of hele bladzijde. Toch zijn het ook mooie tekeningen, omdat ze duidelijk uitbeelden waar het verhaal over gaat. De eerste paginagrote tekening is in semi-kleur van Laura die naar de vogels kijkt. Daarnaast staat een kleine tekening van een vogel. Er staan meer kleine tekeningen van vogels in het boek. De volgende tekening is van tante Docia in de buggy. De volgende tekening is van Laura die Jack knuffelt, snel gevolgd door een tekening van Ma en de meisjes die instappen in de wagon van de trein. Dan een tekening van twee mensen in de trein, een man en vrouw. De volgende tekening is van Mary en Laura op de bank in de wachtruimte. Dan weer een grote tekening van de familie in de wagen in het donker met de meisjes op de plank en pa en ma op de bok. Er is een tekening van Laura op de rug van de pony met los haar. En een grote tekening van Big Jerry op zijn paard bij de ondergaande zon. Dan volgt de tekening van Pa en Laura die kijken naar de spannen paarden die de spoorlijn maken. Daarna een kleine tekening van een half huis en van Laura en Carrie die samen dansen en een tekening van een grote wolf. Een grote tekening van het hele gezin en meneer en mevrouw Boast aan het kerstdiner volgt. Dan een plaatje van Laura aan de afwas. Vervolgens een tekening van Pa en Ma die een boom planten en nog een tekening van Grace tussen de viooltjes.
Dit boek heeft geen lijst met tekeningen uit het boek en ook geen onderschriften bij de tekeningen.

Eigen mening:

Een oud boek, maar nog in goede staat. Ik heb het alleen vanwege de tekeningen, maar ben wel blij dat ik het heb. Ik heb het boek alleen maar omdat ik perse de uitgaven met de tekeningen van Helen Sewell wilde. Het boek ruikt heel oud en dat maakt het toch ook wel heel speciaal.

This is the American book of "the little house by the Silver Lake"

The book belonged to someone personally and still looks very good.

The book starts with a little retrospective. During this time, the Ingalls family has been dealing with illness, which has left Mary blind. Dad is eager to get away from the prairie, and gets an offer to work further west for the railroad. While Dad leaves, Laura helps Ma care for Mary, Carrie, and Grace. In the end they go after Pa by train. The prairie in Dakota is still very pristine and Laura enjoys nature. She also makes a girlfriend in the railway camp, although she has little to do with the real work on the railway. Before winter sets in, Pa is offered to live with his family in the land surveyor's house. The family accepts the offer and moves into the spacious house. The winter is wonderfully quiet and soon they are visited by the Boost family, with whom they become close friends. As soon as spring comes, a stampede hits the land and Ma and Laura tend to the many guests who take shelter in their house. Once Pa builds a house in town, they move there. The book ends with the Ingalls family moving into their own piece of land.

Drawings:

The drawings in this book are by Helen Sewell and Mildred Boyle. Very regularly in the book there are the unknown, streaky drawings. They are usually half or full page. Yet they are also beautiful drawings, because they clearly depict what the story is about. The first full-page drawing is in semi-colour of Laura watching the birds. Next to it is a small drawing of a bird. There are more small drawings of birds in the book. The next drawing is of Aunt Docia in the buggy. The next drawing is of Laura hugging Jack, followed quickly by a drawing of Ma and the girls boarding the train car. Then a drawing of two people on the train, a man and a woman. The next drawing is of Mary and Laura on the sofa in the waiting room. Then another large drawing of the family in the car in the dark with the girls on the board and Ma and Pa on the trestle. There is a drawing of Laura on the back of the pony with loose hair. And a big drawing of Big Jerry on his horse at sunset. Then follows the drawing of Pa and Laura watching the teams of horses making the railway. Then a small drawing of half a house and of Laura and Carrie dancing together and a drawing of a large wolf. A large drawing of the whole family and Mr. and Mrs. Boast at Christmas dinner follows. Then a picture of Laura doing the dishes. Then a drawing of Ma and Pa planting a tree and another drawing of Grace among the pansies.

This book has no list of drawings from the book and no captions to the drawings.

Own opinion:

An old book, but still in good condition. I only have it for the drawings, but I'm glad I got it. I only have the book because I insisted on the editions with Helen Sewell's drawings. The book smells very old and that makes it very special.
