Ik heb de Engelse versie van dit boek, dus niet uit Amerika.
Het boek begint met een kleine terugblik. In deze tijd heeft het gezin Ingalls te maken gehad met ziekte, waardoor Mary blind is geworden. Pa wil al graag weg van de prairie, en krijgt het aanbod om verder naar het Westen voor de spoorweg te gaan werken. Een zus van hem komt langs om te vragen of hij dit wil. Terwijl Pa vertrekt, helpt Laura Ma met de zorg voor Mary, Carrie en Grace. Uiteindelijk gaan ze met de trein achter Pa aan. De prairie in Dakota is nog erg ongerept en Laura geniet van de natuur. De reis met de trein is spannend, maar ook de reis met de huifkar op de lege prairie is mooi. Laura vertelt alles wat ze ziet aan Mary, zodat zij ook kan genieten. Wel is de reis in de huifkar spannend als achter hen een bandiet verschijnt. Bij hun nieuwe woonplaats in het spoorwegkamp blijkt nog meer familie te zijn. Laura maakt een vriendin, haar nicht Lena, hoewel ze weinig te maken heeft met het echte werk aan de spoorweg. Het gezin Ingalls woont in een klein huisje aan de rand van het kamp. In het kamp valt veel te beleven, maar Ma heeft haar meisjes gewaarschuwd er niet in de buurt te komen. Laura wil graag zien hoe de spoorweg wordt gebouwd en op een middag neemt Pa haar mee om te kijken. Op gepaste afstand ziet Laura hoe het in zijn werk gaat. Alle andere tijd brengt ze door met wandelen langs het Zilvermeer, het helpen van Ma en zorgen voor de koe. Voordat de winter invalt krijgt Pa het aanbod om met zijn gezin in het landmetershuis te gaan wonen. Het gezin neemt het aanbod aan en trekt in het ruime huis. De winter is heerlijk rustig en al snel krijgen ze bezoek van de familie Boost, met wie ze hecht bevriend raken. Zodra het lente wordt, komt er een stormloop op het land en zorgen Ma en Laura voor de vele gasten die in hun huis onderdak zoeken. Zodra Pa een huis in de stad heeft gebouwd, verhuizen ze daar naar toe. Het boek eindigt met dat de familie Ingalls op hun eigen stuk grond gaan wonen.

In dit boek staan allemaal tekeningen van Garth Williams. Mooie tekeningen zoals wij ze kennen. De echte tekeningen. Een aantal extra tekeningen in vergelijking met de Nederlandse versie.

Eigen mening:

Een van de leukere boeken uit de serie. In het Engels. Leuk dat er meerdere tekeningen in staan van Garth Williams. Dit boek heb ik al lang. Natuurlijk heb ik eerst de Nederlandse serie verzameld, maar jaren later, toen mijn man Louis in Engeland zat, heeft hij het eerste boekje in het Engels gegeven. Daarna heb ik heel de verzameling in het Engels verzameld.

The book starts with a little retrospective. During this time, the Ingalls family has been dealing with illness, which has left Mary blind. Pa is eager to get away from the prairie, and gets an offer to work further west for the railroad. A sister of his comes by to ask if he wants this. While Pa leaves, Laura helps Ma care for Mary, Carrie, and Grace. In the end they go after Pa by train. The prairie in Dakota is still very pristine and Laura enjoys nature. The journey by train is exciting, but also the journey by covered wagon on the empty prairie is beautiful. Laura tells Mary everything she sees so she can enjoy it too. However, the journey in the covered wagon is exciting when a bandit appears behind them. At their new residence in the railway camp, it turns out that there are even more relatives. Laura makes a friend, her cousin Lena, though she has little to do with the real work on the railroad. The Ingalls family live in a small house on the edge of the camp. There's a lot going on in the camp, but Ma has warned her girls not to go near it. Laura is eager to see the railway being built and one afternoon Pa takes her to watch. From a suitable distance, Laura sees how things work. All other time she spends walking along Silver Lake, helping Ma and taking care of the cow. Before winter sets in, Pa is offered to live with his family in the land surveyor's house. The family accepts the offer and moves into the spacious house. The winter is wonderfully quiet and soon they are visited by the Boast family, with whom they become close friends. As soon as spring comes, a stampede hits the land and Ma and Laura tend to the many guests who take shelter in their house. Once Pa builds a house in town, they move there. The book ends with the Ingalls family moving into their own piece of land.

This book contains all drawings by Garth Williams. Beautiful drawings as we know them. The real drawings. A number of extra drawings compared to the Dutch version.

Own opinion:

One of the better books in the series. In English. Nice that there are several drawings by Garth Williams. I've had this book for a long time. Of course I first collected the Dutch series, but years later, when my husband Louis was in England, he gave the first booklet in English. Then I collected the whole collection in English.
