Het vijfde deel uit de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Op de ontginning is het goed en Laura helpt Pa met het binnenhalen van de oogst en het hooien. Al snel blijkt dat Pa bezorgd is over de komende winter en als dan ook nog de indiaan zijn waarschuwing laat horen over dat het een strenge winter gaat worden, besluit Pa om met zijn gezin in de stad te gaan wonen. Laura vindt het in het begin helemaal niet leuk in de stad. Samen met Carrie wordt ze naar school gestuurd. Al snel beginnen de sneeuwstormen en de school wordt gesloten. Helemaal als de kinderen van de school ternauwernood de stad weten te bereiken als een sneeuwstorm start als ze op school zitten. Het gezin probeert te overleven met het weinige dat ze hebben aan brandstof en eten. Pa leert Laura om “hooistokken” te maken om het vuur brandend te houden, ze malen graan in een koffiemolen voor dagelijks brood. Ze vieren kerst met kleine kadootjes. De trein kan niet meer tot het stadje komen en de bevolking lijdt honger. Almanzo en Cap Garland gaan de prairie op op zoek naar een boer met zaaitarwe om de tarwe te kopen en de stad te redden van de honger. Het is een barre tocht, maar ze vinden de boer, kopen de tarwe en redden daarmee de stad. Uiteindelijk, na maanden, stoppen de sneeuwstormen. Het gezin heeft de lange winter overleeft en het boek eindigt met een kerstfeest in mei.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen van Garth Williams zijn erg goed en levendig. Bij de aankondiging van het hoofdstuk staat een klein tekeningetje en in enkele hoofdstukken staat een grotere tekening. Er staan niet heel veel tekeningen bij het boek, maar die er staan zijn mooi en lijken echt goed. De tekeningen die in het boek staan zijn: Laura met de kruik op de zonnige prairie, de indiaan die in de winkel vertelt hoe streng de winter wordt, Almanzo die pannenkoeken bakt en praat met Royal, Mary en Laura in een schommelstoel, in de sneeuw spelende kinderen, Pa die Laura leert om hooistokken te maken, een door de sneeuw bedolven locomotief, Pa die zaaitarwe haalt uit een wand, Almanzo die hout zit te snijden en Pa die zijn vuist zwaait naar de storm.

In het boek met harde kaft staat als extra tekening :huisjes in een sneeuwstorm,  

Eigen mening:

Dit boek weerspiegelt de hechtheid van het gezin, samen tegen de elementen. Samen overleven. En wat er allemaal gebeurd. Het is een beetje een somber boek, omdat het natuurlijk wel een moeilijke tijd was, maar er spreekt kracht uit hoe ze hier doorheen komen.

The fifth part in the series, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Things are going well on the claim and Laura helps Pa bring in the harvest and make the hay. It soon becomes apparent that Pa is concerned about the coming winter and when the Indian also gives his warning that it will be a harsh winter, Pa decides to live in the city with his family. Laura doesn't like it at all in the city at first. She and Carrie are sent to school. Soon the blizzards begin and the school is closed. Especially when the children of the school barely manage to reach the city when a snow storm starts when they are at school. The family tries to survive on what little fuel and food they have. Pa teaches Laura to make "hay sticks" to keep the fire burning, they grind grain in a coffee grinder for daily bread. They celebrate Christmas with small presents. The train can no longer reach the town and the population is starving. Almanzo and Cap Garland set out across the prairie in search of a seed wheat farmer to buy the wheat and save the town from starvation. It is a grueling journey, but they find the farmer, buy the wheat and save the city. Finally, after months, the blizzards stop. The family survived the long winter and the book ends with a Christmas party in May.

Drawings:

Garth Williams' drawings are very good and vibrant. There is a small drawing at the announcement of the chapter and a larger drawing in some chapters. There are not many drawings in the book, but the ones there are are beautiful and seem really good. The drawings in the book are: Laura with the jug on the sunny prairie, the Indian telling in the shop how harsh the winter is getting, Almanzo baking pancakes and talking to Royal, Mary and Laura in a rocking chair, children playing in the snow, Pa teaching Laura how to make hay sticks, a locomotive buried in snow, Pa pulling wheat seed from a wall, Almanzo cutting wood and Pa waving his fist at the storm.

Own opinion:

This book reflects the closeness of the family, together against the elements. Survive together. And what happened. It's a bit of a sad book, because of course it was a difficult time, but there is strength in how they get through this.
