Er zijn 8 hoofdstukken in dit boekje.
1. De paardenschuur
Over dat Almanzo aan het werk gaat in de schuur en ook gaat kijken bij de paarden. Hij is dol op de paarden, maar zijn vader vindt hem nog te jong om de paarden te verzorgen. Hij mag wel de koeien melken en is trots als zijn vader zegt dat hij daar goed in is.
2. verjaardagsverrassing
Almanzo is jarig en mag een dag thuisblijven. Hij krijgt een mooi houten juk voor zijn kalfjes en is de hele ochtend bezig met de kalfjes te leren hoe ze moeten luisteren. Die middag eet hij alleen met vader en moeder. Daarna krijgt hij een mooie, houten slee en speelt de rest van de middag met de slee.

3. africhten van de kalfjes

Almanzo oefent vaak met de kalfjes om ze te leren aan het juk te wennen. Op een dag komen er vriendjes spelen en besluit Almanzo om de ossen voor de slee te spannen. Dat gaat een beetje goed, maar hij komt er ook achter dat hij de kalfjes beter kan leren hoe het gaat op het erf.
4. De vreemde hond
Op een avond komt er een vreemde hond aan de deur. Hij is mager en zielig en Alice besluit om hem eten te geven. Moeder is een beetje zenuwachtig, want vandaag heeft vader veulens verkocht en het was te laat om het geld nog naar de bank te brengen. Ze twijfelt over waar ze het geld moet verstoppen. De volgende morgen hoort Almanzo wat er die nacht gebeurd is. Midden in de nacht werd moeder wakker van het geluid van een hond. Toen ze naar buiten keek zag ze de onbekende hond voor het hek heen en weer lopen. Dat bleef hij een hele tijd doen. Toen de hond rustig ging liggen, ging moeder weer naar bed. De volgende morgen stonden er voetstappen van mannen aan de andere kant van het hek. Nog voor het ontbijt spande vader de paarden voor de wagen en bracht het geld naar de bank. In de stad hoorde hij dat andere mensen pas terug beroofd waren nadat ze paarden hadden verkocht. De hond had de familie gered, maar was verder verdwenen.
5. De laatste wol
Het is tijd om de schapen te scheren. Alle mannen gaan aan het werk. Almanzo moet de geschoren wol naar de zolder brengen. Er wordt hard gewerkt door iedereen. Vlak voor de lunch houden vader en de hulp een wedstrijd wie het snelste klaar is met scheren. Broer Royal bindt de wol samen en Almanzo brengt de wol naar de zolder. Hij is als laatste klaar. De hele middag lacht John hem uit dat hij nooit als eerste klaar kan zijn. Maar Almanzo is hem te slim af geweest! Terwijl iedereen al naar de lunch was, heeft hij een schaap met wol de trap naar de zolder op geholpen. Hij heeft het dier hooi gegeven om het stil te houden. Vader en John doen weer een wedstrijd als ze bij de laatste schapen zijn. Almanzo blijft volhouden dat hij wint, en John blijft hem plagen dat hij als laatste klaar is. Precies als alle schapen geschoren zijn, begint het schaap op de zolder te blaten. Almanzo lacht iedereen uit, omdat hij een wol boven heeft, wat nog niet geschoren is!
6. Sterrenlicht
Er is een prachtig veulen geboren. Almanzo gaat er graag naar kijken. Hij noemt het veulen sterrenlicht. Almanzo houdt van paarden en hoopt op een dag zijn eigen paarden te kunnen hebben en africhten.
7. De portemonnee van Meneer Thompson
Als Almanzo met vader meerijdt naar de stad ziet hij een portemonnee liggen op de straat. Er blijkt veel geld in te zitten. In de stad doen ze navraag van wie het geld kan zijn. De wagenmaker heeft wel een idee. Hij is van een rijk iemand die niemand vertrouwt en al zijn geld zelf bewaart. Als de man zijn portemonnee komt halen, wil hij Almanzo een stuiver geven als vindersloon. Dat vindt de wagenwaker veel te weinig en hij dwingt de man om Almanzo veel meer te geven. Uiteindelijk gaat hij met Almanzo mee naar vader om alles uit te leggen. Almanzo mag het geld houden en zet het op de bank.
8. Almanzo kiest
Die middag aan tafel vertelt vader aan moeder wat er in de stad is gebeurt. Tevens vroeg de wagenmaker aan vader om eens na te denken of hij Almanzo geen wagenmaker wilde laten worden en bij hem in de zaak te komen. Moeder is verontwaardigt over het voorstel. Zij vindt dat Almanzo boer moet worden, net als vader. Uiteindelijk vragen ze aan Almanzo wat hij wil. Hij vertelt dat hij graag een veulen wil kopen van het geld dat hij vandaag heeft gekregen. Dit vinden zijn ouders geen goed idee en Almanzo is teleurgesteld, Maar dan zegt vader: je mag Sterrenlicht hebben. Almanzo weet zeker dat hij dan boer wil worden.

Tekeningen:

Er staan weer een paar leuke tekeningen in het boek. De eerste tekening dat Almanzo de koe aan het melken is, lijkt precies op die van Garth Williams. Die van de ossen is net iets anders, Almanzo heeft ze aan de lijn tijdens het oefenen. Er is een plaatje van Almanzo en zijn vriendjes op de slee en de ossen die er voor rennen. Ook is er een plaatje van Almanzo en Alice die de vreemde hond eten geven. Het plaatje van het schaapscheren is vanuit een andere hoek genomen. Meer vanaf de zolder. Dan is er nog een plaatje van Almanzo bij de veulens. Het plaatje dat Mr Thompson geld uittelt voor Almanzo is in dit boek wat vriendelijker. Het laatste plaatje is van de hele familie aan tafel als Almanzo hoort dat hij Sterrenlicht krijgt

Eigen mening:

Een boekje met een harde kaft, de hoofdstukken zijn bekend uit de echte boeken. Het gaat vooral om de plaatjes en die zijn mooi.

1. The horse barn

About Almanzo going to work in the barn and also checking on the horses. He loves the horses, but his father thinks he is still too young to take care of them. He is allowed to milk the cows and is proud when his father says he is good at it.

2. birthday surprise

It's Almanzo's birthday and he can stay home for a day. He gets a nice wooden yoke for his calves and spends the entire morning teaching the calves how to listen. That afternoon he eats alone with his father and mother. Then he gets a nice wooden sled and plays with the sled for the rest of the afternoon.

3. training the calves

Almanzo often practices with the calves to teach them to get used to the yoke. One day friends come to play and Almanzo decides to harness the oxen to the sleigh. That goes somewhat well, but he also discovers that he can better teach the calves how things work in the yard.

4. The strange dog

One evening a strange dog comes to the door. He is thin and pathetic and Alice decides to feed him. Mother is a bit nervous, because today father sold foals and it was too late to take the money to the bank. She is unsure about where to hide the money. The next morning, Almanzo hears what happened that night. In the middle of the night, mother woke up to the sound of a dog. When she looked outside she saw the unknown dog walking back and forth in front of the fence. He continued to do that for a long time. When the dog lay down quietly, mother went back to bed. The next morning there were footsteps of men on the other side of the fence. Before breakfast, father hitched the horses to the buggy and took the money to the bank. In town he heard that other people had been robbed after selling horses. The dog had saved the family, but had otherwise disappeared.

5. The last wool

It's time to shear the sheep. All the men go to work. Almanzo has to take the shorn wool to the attic. Everyone is working hard. Just before lunch, father and the helper have a competition to see who can finish shaving the fastest. Brother Royal ties the wool together and Almanzo takes the wool to the attic. He's the last to finish. All afternoon John laughs at him about how he can never be the first to finish. But Almanzo has outsmarted him! While everyone had already gone to lunch, he helped a sheep with wool up the stairs to the attic. He gave the animal hay to keep it quiet. Father and John compete again when they reach the last sheep. Almanzo keeps insisting he wins, and John keeps teasing him about finishing last. Just when all the sheep have been sheared, the sheep in the attic starts bleating. Almanzo laughs at everyone because he has a wool on top that has not yet been shorn!

6. Starlight

A beautiful foal has been born. Almanzo likes to watch it. He calls the foal Starlight. Almanzo loves horses and hopes to one day own and train his own.

7. Mr. Thompson's wallet

When Almanzo rides into town with his father, he sees a wallet lying on the street. Turns out there's a lot of money in it. In the city they ask who the money could be. The wheelwright has an idea. It belongs to a rich person who trusts no one and keeps all his money himself. When the man comes to get his wallet, he wants to give Almanzo a nickel as a finder's fee. The wheelwright thinks that is far too little and he forces the man to give Almanzo much more. Finally he goes with Almanzo to father to explain everything. Almanzo gets to keep the money and puts it in the bank.

8. Almanzo chooses

That afternoon at the table, father tells mother what happened in the city. The wheelwright also asked father to think about whether he wanted Almanzo to become a wheelwright and join his business. Mother is indignant about the proposal. She believes that Almanzo should become a farmer, just like her father. Finally they ask Almanzo what he wants. He says that he would like to buy a foal with the money he received today. His parents don't think this is a good idea and Almanzo is disappointed, but then father says: you can have Starlight. Almanzo is sure he wants to become a farmer.

Drawings:

There are some nice drawings in the book. The first drawing of Almanzo milking the cow looks exactly like Garth Williams. That of the oxen is slightly different, Almanzo has them on a leash during practice. There is a picture of Almanzo and his friends on the sleigh and the oxen running in front of it. There is also a picture of Almanzo and Alice feeding the strange dog. The picture of sheep shearing is taken from a different angle. More from the attic. Then there is a picture of Almanzo with the foals. The picture of Mr. Thompson counting out money for Almanzo is a bit friendlier in this book. The last picture is of the whole family at the table when Almanzo hears that he is getting Starlight

Own opinion:

A book with a hard cover, the chapters are known from the real books. It's mainly about the pictures and they are beautiful.

Zijn vader heeft een vrij groot bedrijf en het hele gezin helpt mee om het florerend te maken. Ook Almanzo, een nog jonge knul. Hij helpt mee bij het verzorgen van de dieren en het zaaien van de gewassen. Hij moet ook naar school, wat hij helemaal niet leuk vind. Op school zitten ook vervelende jongens die de leraar pesten. Als Almanzo jarig is, mag hij een dag thuisblijven en krijgt een juk voor zijn eigen twee ossen en een nieuwe slee. In het voorjaar helpt Almanzo ook goed mee op de boerderij, maar niet met de paarden, daar is hij nog te jong voor. Op een dag verkoopt Vader een mooi span paarden, omdat het te laat is om het geld naar de bank te brengen, wordt het geld in huis bewaard. Diezelfde avond meld zich een zwerfhond bij de Familie Wilder, Alice geeft het diertje eten. Diezelfde nacht behoedt de hond het gezin van een beroving. Nog voor het ontbijt brengt vader het geld naar de bank. Op 4 juli is er onverwacht nachtvorst. Om de oogst te redden moet het hele gezin midden in de nacht uit bed om ieder plantje met wat water te begieten. Na een nacht hard werken, is het bij zonsopkomst feest. Almanzo krijgt van vader geld voor al het harde werken wat hij doet en koopt voor zichzelf snoep en een varken. In het najaar gaat het gezin naar de jaarmarkt. Zelf brengen ze ook waren in en Almanzo wint een prijs voor de grootste pompoen. Uiteindelijk wordt het weer winter en het boek eindigt dat Almanzo een veulen van zijn vader krijgt om af te richten.

Voor in het boek staat een lijst van alle illustraties. Er staan 19 illustraties in totaal in. Iedere foto heeft zijn eigen ondertitel die in een zin vertelt wat het betekent. In dit boek staan plaatjes van Helen Sewell, de enige reden waarom ik het boek heb. Tekeningen door Helen Sewell die in het boek staan zijn: Almanzo die met zijn broer en zussen naar school loopt, Almanzo die een koe melkt, Alice aan het borduren, kinderen op een rijtje, Almanzo in de tobbe, Almanzo die stil zit op een grote stoel, Almanzo en vader op een boomstronk in het bos bij een pot met kokend sap, Almanzo met twee paarden, Nick Brown de tin-verkoper, Alice geeft de hond eten, Almanzo leidt een schaap de trap op, Almanzo aan het onkruid wieden, Almanzo en de beer in het bos, Alice, Royal en Almanzo rennen achter varken Lucy aan, Almanzo op een ladder aan het appels plukken, Almanzo kijkt naar een muildier, Almanzo helpt moeder met kaarsen maken, een volle tafel met eten en Almanzo zit tussen de volwassenen en de ossen trekken een slee vol boomstammen.

Eigen mening:

Het verhaal is bekend, ik heb het boek vanwege de tekeningen van Helen Sewell. Het is een oud bibliotheek-boek, de bladzijden zijn vergeeld. Het ruikt ook naar oud boek.

In the end he got a beautiful foal for himself to train.

In the spring Almanzo also helps out on the farm, but not with the horses, he is still too young for that. One day Father sells a nice team of horses, because it is too late to take the money to the bank, the money is kept in the house. That same evening, a stray dog comes to the Wilder family and Alice gives the animal food. That same night, the dog saves the family from being robbed. Before breakfast, father takes the money to the bank. On July 4 there is unexpected night frost. To save the harvest, the entire family has to get out of bed in the middle of the night to water each plant with some water. After a hard night's work, it's time to party at sunrise. Almanzo receives money from his father for all the hard work he does and buys himself candy and a pig. In the autumn the family goes to the annual fair. They also bring in goods themselves and Almanzo wins a prize for the largest pumpkin. Eventually winter comes again and the book ends with Almanzo receiving a foal from his father to train.

There is a list of all illustrations at the front of the book. There are 19 illustrations in total. Each illustration has its own subtitle that tells what it means in a sentence. This book contains pictures of Helen Sewell, the only reason I have the book. Drawings by Helen Sewell that appear in the book are: Almanzo walking to school with his brother and sisters, Almanzo milking a cow, Alice embroidering, children in a row, Almanzo in the tub, Almanzo sitting quietly on a large chair, Almanzo and father on a tree stump in the forest near a pot of boiling sap, Almanzo with two horses, Nick Brown the tin peddler, Alice feeding the dog, Almanzo leading a sheep up the stairs, Almanzo weeding, Almanzo and the bear in the forest, Alice, Royal and Almanzo running after Lucy the pig, Almanzo on a ladder picking apples, Almanzo looking at a mule, Almanzo helping mother make candles, a full table with food and Almanzo sitting between the adults and the oxen pull a sled full of logs.

Own opinion:

The story is well known, I have the book because of Helen Sewell's drawings. It is an old library book, the pages are yellowed. It also smells like an old book.

Het Engelse boek "de Grote Hoeve". Ik heb dit boekje uit Engeland, maar het is vrijwel gelijk aan een Amerikaans boekje.
Het verhaal is van Almanzo die zijn jeugd doorbrengt op een boerderij in Malone, New York. Zijn vader heeft een vrij groot bedrijf en het hele gezin helpt mee om het florerend te maken. Ook Almanzo, een nog jonge knul. Hij helpt mee bij het verzorgen van de dieren en het zaaien van de gewassen. Hij moet ook naar school, wat hij helemaal niet leuk vind. Op school zitten ook vervelende jongens die de leraar pesten. De familie viert samen kerstmis. Tekeningen:

De plaatjes in het boek zijn van Garth Williams. Er staan meer tekeningen in dan in de Nederlandse versie. Het zijn de bekende, veelzeggende, mooie, levende tekeningen van Garth Williams. Aan het begin van ieder hoofdstuk is getekend en verder soms tussendoor nog een plaatje.

Het boek “de Grote Hoeve” in het Engels. Leuk dat er extra tekeningen in staan van Garth Williams.

The book “de Grote Hoeve” in English. Nice that it contains extra drawings by Garth Williams.

Er staan echt heel veel artikelen in, ongeveer 170.

Dit boek gekocht en gekregen in april 2021.

Dit boek al wel een paar keer voorbij zien komen, maar toch nooit gekocht. De voorkant is wel mooi, ik wist dat het over artikelen geschreven door Laura Ingalls ging, maar ik wilde het toch steeds niet. Tot ik in maart ging zoeken naar alle artikelen die Laura had geschreven. Ik vond op pioneergirl.com een hele lijst, inclusief in welke boeken de artikelen al zijn gepubliceerd. Toen bleek ik veel artikelen niet te hebben en toen bleek dat in Farm Journalist praktisch alle artikelen zijn gebundeld. Toen moest ik het boek natuurlijk hebben!

Bought and received this book in April 2021.

I've seen this book a few times, but never bought it. The front cover is nice, I knew it was about articles written by Laura Ingalls, but I still didn't want it. Until March when I started looking for all the articles Laura had written. I found a whole list on pioneergirl.com, including in which books the articles have already been published. Then it turned out that I did not have many articles and then it turned out that practically all articles are bundled in Farm Journalist. Then of course I had to have the book!

Een boekje vol informatie over de sites van de musea en extra informatie. Ook Burr Oak, Springfield en het blindeninstituut in Iowa worden genoemd. En natuurlijk Pepin, Independence, Walnut Grove, De Smet, Mansfield en Malone. De extra informatie zijn vaak korte stukjes die gaan onder andere over: suikerstroop, het grote groene boek van Pa, lantaarns, de Montgomery ward catalog, buffels, Laura’s naaimand, quilting, spinnenwielen, de eerste naaimachines, de schoenmaker, one room schools, huifkarren, katoenbomen, ovens en bulldogs.

Het boek begint met een kaartje van de lokaties en de adressen van alle musea.

Elke onderwerp heeft een of twee pagina’s, alleen de lokaties hebben soms meerdere pagina’s met kleine stukjes informatie, zoals wat er te bezoeken is, wat er in de omgeving is gerelateerd aan de familie Ingalls.

Tekeningen:

Veel foto’s van de musea zelf, de locaties, van de steden en van voorwerpen. Mooie, duidelijke foto’s om het verhaal aan te vullen. Bij Pepin staan er foto’s van de blokhut, maar ook van het graf van Anna Barry en de informatieborden van Lake Pepin en Little House Wayside en de blokhut in de winter en bevroren lake Pepin. Tevens fotootjes van het museum. Van Independence staan er foto’s van de blokhut en binnen in de blokhut en van de andere huisjes bij het museum en de graven van Dr Tann en Edmund Mason. Van Walnut Grove staan er fotootjes van het bord bij de dug out en het museum en de kerkklok en dingen die in het museum staan. Van Burr Oak zijn de foto’s van het hotel en de winkel en het bankgebouw en van de oven in het hotel en de begraafplaats. Van De Smet zijn de foto’s van het landmetershuis in de sneeuw en verschillende informatieborden over Pa en Ma en de geboorteplaats van Rose. Uit Spring Valley staan er verschillende foto’s van de kerk en het graf van Royal. Van Mansfield zijn er foto’s van het Rocky Ridge huis en het Rock huis en (oude) museum. Maar ook van de buste van Laura in het centrum en de grafsteen. En dan van Malone nog verschillende foto’s van de boerderij en de schuren.

Bij de informatiepagina staan kleine foto’s van lantaarns, de broodschaal, een buffelhoofd, Laura’s naaimand, een quilt, spinnenwielen, naaimachines, een wateremmer en schoolbankjes, karntonnen, katoenbomen, bulldogs en een foto van Laura’s verlovingsring.

Eigen mening:

Mooi boekje, eenvoudig, maar wel mooi over de verschillende sites. De tekst is eenvoudig te lezen in korte alinea’s. Het is wel een informatief boekje.

The book starts with a map of the locations and addresses of all museums.

Each topic has one or two pages, only the locations sometimes have several pages with small pieces of information, such as what there is to visit, what is in the area related to the Ingalls family.

Drawings:

Many photos of the museums themselves, the locations, the cities and objects. Beautiful, clear photos to complement the story. At Pepin there are photos of the log cabin, but also of Anna Barry's grave and the information boards of Lake Pepin and Little House Wayside and the log cabin in winter and frozen Lake Pepin. Also photos of the museum. From Independence there are photos of the log cabin and inside the log cabin and of the other houses at the museum and the graves of Dr Tann and Edmund Mason. From Walnut Grove there are photos of the sign at the dug out and the museum and the church bell and things that are in the museum. From Burr Oak are the photos of the hotel and the store and the bank building and of the stove in the hotel and the cemetery. By De Smet are the photos of the surveyor's house in the snow and various information boards about Ma and Pa and Rose's birthplace. From Spring Valley there are several photos of the church and Royal's grave. From Mansfield there are photos of the Rocky Ridge house and the Rock house and (old) museum. But also of the bust of Laura in the center and the gravestone. And then several photos from Malone of the farm and the barns.

The information page contains small photos of lanterns, the bread bowl, a buffalo head, Laura's sewing basket, a quilt, spinning wheels, sewing machines, a water bucket and school desks, churns, cotton trees, bulldogs and a photo of Laura's engagement ring.

Own opinion:

Nice book, simple, but nice about the different sites. The text is easy to read in short paragraphs. It is an informative booklet.

Het vierde boek van de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Het boek begint met een kleine terugblik. In deze tijd heeft het gezin Ingalls te maken gehad met ziekte, waardoor Mary blind is geworden. Pa wil al graag weg van de prairie, en krijgt het aanbod om verder naar het Westen voor de spoorweg te gaan werken. Terwijl Pa vertrekt, helpt Laura Ma met de zorg voor Mary, Carrie en Grace. Uiteindelijk gaan ze met de trein achter Pa aan. De prairie in Dakota is nog erg ongerept en Laura geniet van de natuur. Tevens maakt ze in het spoorwegkamp een vriendin, haar nicht Lena, hoewel ze weinig te maken heeft met het echte werk aan de spoorweg. Voordat de winter invalt krijgt Pa het aanbod om met zijn gezin in het landmetershuis te gaan wonen. Het gezin neemt het aanbod aan en trekt in het ruime huis. De winter is heerlijk rustig en al snel krijgen ze bezoek van de familie Boost, met wie ze hecht bevriend raken. Tijdens de winter gaan Carrie en Laura glijden op het ijs van het zilvermeer, waar ze een grote wolf op de oever zien. Er wordt veel gezongen en gedanst in de avonden. Zodra het lente wordt, komt er een stormloop op het land en zorgen Ma en Laura voor de vele gasten die in hun huis onderdak zoeken. Zodra Pa een huis in de stad heeft gebouwd, verhuizen ze daar naar toe. Het boek eindigt met dat de familie Ingalls op hun eigen stuk grond gaan wonen nabij de stad.

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan verschillende tekeningen van Garth Williams. De tekeningen zijn mooi en geven goed weer wat er in het verhaal gebeurd. De tekeningen in dit boekje zijn niet heel scherp afgedrukt, dus niet heel goed te zien, maar ze komen overeen met de andere boeken en tekeningen. De meeste tekeningen zijn paginagroot of op een halve pagina.

Eigen mening:

Ik heb dit boek gekocht in 2023 gewoon omdat ik het leuk vond om een boek van de serie in een andere taal te hebben. Ik zal het boek nooit echt lezen, want zoveel Spaans ken ik niet, maar het is gewoon leuk om te hebben. De plaatjes zijn bekend, dus daar hoefde ik het boek niet voor te hebben. De letterdruk is heel klein.

The fourth book in the series, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The book starts with a small retrospective. During this time, the Ingalls family has been dealing with illness, which has left Mary blind. Pa already wants to get away from the prairie, and is offered to work for the railroad further west. While Pa leaves, Laura helps Ma care for Mary, Carrie and Grace. Eventually they go after Pa by train. The prairie in Dakota is still very untouched and Laura enjoys nature. She also makes a friend at the railway camp, her cousin Lena, although she has little to do with the real work on the railway. Before winter sets in, Pa is offered to live in the surveyor's house with his family. The family accepts the offer and moves into the spacious house. The winter is wonderfully quiet and they soon receive a visit from the Boast family, with whom they become close friends. During the winter, Carrie and Laura go sliding on the ice of Silver Lake, where they see a large wolf on the shore. There is a lot of singing and dancing in the evenings. As soon as spring comes, there is a stampede on the land and Ma and Laura take care of the many guests who seek shelter in their house. As soon as Pa builds a house in town, they move there. The book ends with the Ingalls family living on their own plot of land near the city.

Drawings:

The book contains several drawings by Garth Williams. The drawings are beautiful and clearly reflect what is happening in the story. The drawings in this book are not printed very sharply, so are not very visible, but they correspond with the other books and drawings. Most drawings are full-page or half-page.

Own opinion:

I bought this book in 2023 just because I liked having a book of the series in another language. I will never actually read the book, because I don't know much Spanish, but it's just nice to have. The pictures are familiar, so I didn't need the book for that. The letter print is very small.

Laura gaat uit huis om les te geven op een kleine school ver weg op de prairie. Ze moet inwonen bij het gezin Brewster, wat zeer onplezierig is. Ook het les geven vindt Laura niet gemakkelijk, al heeft ze maar 5 leerlingen. Gelukkig is daar Almanzo die Laura elke vrijdag komt halen en elke zondag weer terugbrengt. Laura is blij om tussendoor thuis te zijn en kan tevens Ma om raad vragen over haar leerlingen. Een keer is de rit naar huis ontzettend koud, elke paar kilometer moet Almanzo uit de slee om de adem van de paarden rond hun neuzen te ontdooien. Laura wordt kouder en kouder, als ze bij het huis zijn, moet ze naar binnen worden geholpen. Uiteindelijk komt de schoolinspecteur langs op Laura’s schooltje. Laura is blij als haar termijn voorbij is en ze terug kan keren naar huis. Hoewel ze niets voelt voor Almanzo blijft ze toch met hem meegaan voor sleetochtjes. Laura gaat met de mevrouw en Maggie McKee naar hun ontginning, omdat deze bewoont moet worden. Gelukkig kan ze wel naar huis voor de thuiskomst van Mary. Mary komt thuis van school voor een vakantie. Laura blijft contact houden met Almanzo. Ze helpt zelfs met een span paarden temmen. Het is een wild span. Laura vindt het leuk om Almanzo met de paarden te helpen, al vindt Ma het maar gevaarlijk. Op een keer gaat ook Nellie Oleson mee uit rijden, wat Laura helemaal niet leuk vindt. Laura en Almanzo gaan op zangles. Het wilde paard Barnum leert stapvoets gaan. Laura geeft nog een paar termijnen les op andere scholen meer in de buurt van De Smet. Vlak voor kerst gaan Almanzo en zijn broer Royal weg voor een world Fair te bekijken. Laura mist Almanzo, maar wil dat niet laten merken. Op kerstavond komt Almanzo vervroegd terug en geeft Laura een mooie broche als kerstkado. Uiteindelijk krijgt ze van Almanzo een verlovingsring, waarbij Ma zich afvraagt of ze meer om de paarden geeft dan om de eigenaar, maar Laura antwoordt dat ze het ene niet zonder het andere kan hebben. Almanzo bouwt een huis op de bomenclaim. Als blijkt dat familie van Almanzo van plan is een groot huwelijksfeest te organiseren, wat Almanzo en Pa niet kunnen betalen, besluit het stel op korte termijn te trouwen. Almanzo werkt door aan het huis dat hij aan het bouwen is en korte tijd later trouwen ze bij dominee Brown. Na hun huwelijk gaat Laura met Almanzo op de bomenclaim wonen.

Tekeningen:

Er staan weer veel kleine tekeningen in van Garth Williams bij het begin van elk hoofdstuk. Verder staan er ook regelmatig wat grotere tekeningen in die passen bij het verhaal.

De kleine tekeningen zijn: een huisje, een lamp, de opkomende zon, waaiende bomen, takjes, een wiel, sneeuwvlokken en de zangschool,

De grote tekeningen zijn: Pa en Laura in de slee op weg over de besneeuwde prairie, 5 kinderen in een klaslokaal en Laura als lerares er voor, een slee met Almanzo en Laura met twee paarden, Laura die een mes uit de vlecht van Martha haalt terwijl Charlie en Clarence toekijken, Laura op de sofa terwijl Mrs Brewster een mes naar haar man houdt, Laura die zich aankleedt voor de koude tocht, sleerijden in de hoofdstraat van De Smet, een brandend fort, Mary bij haar kist terwijl ze kadootjes uitdeelt, Laura en Alice die popcorn maken, Almanzo en Laura in de buggy, Laura die een brief ophaalt bij het postkantoor, Laura die in een razende buggy rijdt met Barnum voor de buggy, Laura laat Almanzo binnen in de sneeuwstorm, de naaimachine, Laura aan het naaien en Almanzo en Laura voor dominee Brown.

Ook een van de mooiste boeken omdat er in wordt vertelt hoe Laura verder opgroeit en hoe het begint met Almanzo.

Laura leaves home to teach at a small school far away on the prairie. She has to live with the Brewster family, which is very unpleasant. Laura also finds teaching difficult, even though she only has 5 students. Fortunately there is Almanzo who comes to collect Laura every Friday and brings her back every Sunday. Laura is happy to be home in between and can also ask Ma for advice about her students. Once the ride home is extremely cold, every few kilometers Almanzo has to get out of the sleigh to thaw the breath of the horses around their noses. Laura gets colder and colder, when they get to the house she has to be helped inside. Finally, the school inspector visits Laura's school. Laura is happy when her term is over and she can return home. Although she doesn't feel anything for Almanzo, she continues to go with him for sleigh rides. Laura goes with Mrs. and Maggie McKee to their claim because it needs to be inhabited. Fortunately, she can go home before Mary's return. Mary comes home from school for a vacation. Laura keeps in touch with Almanzo. She even helps tame a team of horses. It's a wild team. Laura enjoys helping Almanzo with the horses, even though Ma thinks it's dangerous. On one occasion, Nellie Oleson also goes for a ride, which Laura doesn't like at all. Laura and Almanzo take singing lessons. The wild horse Barnum learns to walk at a walking pace. Laura misses Almanzo, but doesn't want to show it. On Christmas Eve, Almanzo returns early and gives Laura a beautiful brooch as a Christmas present. In the end she is given an engagement ring by Almanzo, with Ma wondering if she cares more about the horses than the owner, but Laura replies that she can't have one without the other. Almanzo builds a house on the tree claim. When it turns out that Almanzo's family is planning to organize a big wedding party, which Almanzo and Pa cannot afford, the couple decides to get married soon. Almanzo continues to work on the house he is building and a short time later they marry at Reverend Brown's. After their marriage, Laura goes to live on the tree claim with Almanzo.

There are again many small drawings by Garth Williams at the beginning of each chapter. There are also regular larger drawings that fit the story.

Own opinion:

Also one of the most beautiful books because it tells how Laura grows up and how it starts with Almanzo.
