Samenvatting:

Het boek is het verhaal van tante Docia, die in de Laura-boeken voorkomt in het Grote Bos en later bij het Kleine huis aan het Zilvermeer. Eigenlijk heeft aunt Docia geen makkelijk leven gehad. Het verhaal is een novel en deels geconstrueerd uit brieven en deels verzonnen. Het verhaal is in dagboek-vorm. Er zit een inleiding in het boek en dan begint het verhaal in 1918, Docia is erg ziek en stervende. Haar kinderen komen bij elkaar om afscheid te nemen. Een van haar dochters heeft haar dagboeken gevonden en mee genomen. Docia gaat er in lezen en dan komt haar verhaal vanaf 1865, als ze 19 jaar is en het dagboek heeft gekregen van haar vader. Ze schrijft er onregelmatig in, ze schrijft over haar familie, soms alledaagse dingen. Ze maakt eenvoudige dingen mee. Ook vertelt Docia in haar dagboek veel over de rest van de familie en alle trouwerijen en geboortes. Ze schrijft over haar ontmoeting met August Waldvogel en hoe verliefd ze is en dat ze uiteindelijk gaat trouwen. Ze schrijft over August, die na het huwelijk toch wat moeilijker in de omgang blijkt te zijn en zijn broer Joseph die zich met hen bemoeit. Dan schrijft ze over hoe ziek ze is tijdens de zwangerschap van Lena en hoe blij met de geboorte en hoe mooi Lena is. Daarna raakt ze vrij snel weer zwanger van Gene. August werkt in een molen als paymaster en soms zijn er wat problemen. Uiteindelijk komt er in de vooravond iemand aan huis die August niet vertrouwt en hij schiet door de deur heen. De persoon blijkt te overlijden. August wordt opgepakt en gevangen gezet en uiteindelijk tot 8 jaar gevangenisstraf veroordeeld. Docia vertelt aan haar dagboek dat ze (hoogzwanger) weer bij haar ouders gaat wonen, samen met Lena. Ze vertelt hoe ze uiteindelijk kiest voor een scheiding van August en dat Gene wordt geboren, maar dat hij zijn vader nooit zal zien. Daarna woont Docia langere tijd met de kinderen bij haar ouders. Ze is dol op de hele familie en ook haar broers en zussen met hun gezinnen. Elke keer meldt ze als iemand zwanger is. Docia werkt her en der om geld voor zichzelf en haar kinderen te verdienen. Haar moeder (op wie Docia dol is) zorgt dan voor haar kinderen. Maar Lena en Gene zijn boefjes. Uiteindelijk ontmoet Docia Hi via haar broer Hiram. In het begin vindt ze hem niets, maar later wordt ze verliefd. Ze trouwen en Hi neemt Lena en Gene op als zijn eigen kinderen. Hi is een “zwerver” en trekt rond. Hij blijkt ook een dronkaard te zijn. Hier komt Docia na het huwelijk achter. Docia zwerft met hem mee in twee huifkarren, op zoek naar werk en een goed stuk grond. Ze reizen heen en weer tussen verschillende staten: onder andere Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Dakota Territory, enzovoorts. Maar nergens kan Hi lang settelen. Soms overwinteren ze een paar maanden op een gehuurde boerderij. Soms wonen ze tijdelijk in bij Henry & Polly. Docia heeft het soms moeilijk met het zwervende bestaan, zeker als Hi al het geld verdrinkt en zij en de kinderen honger lijden. Docia raakt wel zwanger van Hi. Ze krijgen uiteindelijk samen 6 dochters. Lena en Hi botst als Lena in de puberteit komt. Gene ziet Hi als zijn vader, maar wil juist wel boer worden, wat Hi niet wil. Docia is blij als ze in de buurt van familie zijn en probeert ook altijd de familie te betrekken. De familie Ingalls schrijft veel heen en weer. Hi krijgt uiteindelijk werk bij de railroads en Docia kan dan werken in de barak om voor het eten te zorgen. Lena en Gene moeten haar dan helpen of oppassen op de kleine kinderen. Docia is wel altijd blij als ze ergens een redelijk vaste plek vinden. Ze schrijft ook over haar zorgen. In 1886 stopt het dagboek. Dan gaat het weer terug naar 1918 en het overlijden van Docia.

Er staan geen tekeningen in het boek, alleen aan het begin van elk hoofdstuk een achtergrondplaatje van steeds dezelfde bloem.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021. Werd aanbevolen en er op gewezen door een Amerikaanse vriendin. Het leek me wel interessant om het verhaal van Docia Ingalls te lezen, dus daarom besteld bij Amazon.

Het is een mooi verhaal en leest heerlijk, ook echt wel om door te lezen, interessant. Veel over de hele familie qua trouwerijen, geboortes en op het einde ook overlijden. Het verlies van de ouders Ingalls en hoe moeilijk Docia dat vindt. Het is echt een lopend verhaal en interessant. Charles en Caroline worden ook genoemd en dat Mary blind wordt. Helaas een jaar te vroeg dat Laura trouwt. Maar verder is het echt wel een mooi boek en het lezen waard. Het kan zo gegaan zijn, maar het is natuurlijk verzonnen.

Het boek leest heerlijk!

The book is the story of Aunt Docia, who appears in the Laura books in the Big Woods and later in the Little House on Silver Lake. Actually, Aunt Docia hasn't had an easy life. The story is a novel and partly constructed from letters and partly made up. The story is in diary form. There is an introduction in the book and then the story starts in 1918, Docia is very sick and dying. Her children gather to say goodbye. One of her daughters found and took her diaries. Docia starts reading them and then her story comes from 1865, when she is 19 years old and has received the diary from her father. She writes in it irregularly, she writes about her family, sometimes everyday things. She experiences simple things. Docia also tells a lot about the rest of the family and all the weddings and births in her diary. She writes about her meeting with August Waldvogel and how in love she is and that she will eventually get married. She writes about August, who turns out to be a bit more difficult to get along with after the marriage, and his brother Joseph who interferes with them. Then she writes about how sick she is during Lena's pregnancy and how happy with the birth and how beautiful Lena is. After that, she gets pregnant again with Gene pretty soon. August works in a mill as a paymaster and sometimes there are some problems. Finally, in the early evening, someone who does not trust August comes to the house and August shoots through the door. The person appears to be dead. August is caught and imprisoned and eventually sentenced to 8 years in prison. Docia tells her diary that she (heavily pregnant) is going to live with her parents again, together with Lena. She tells how she finally chooses to divorce August and that Gene is born, but he will never see his father. After that, Docia lives with her parents for a longer period of time with the children. She adores all the family and also her siblings with their families. Every time she reports if someone is pregnant. Docia works here and there to earn money for herself and her children. Her mother (whom Docia adores) then takes care of her children. But Lena and Gene are rascals. In the end, Docia meets Hi through her brother Hiram. At first she doesn't like him, but later she falls in love. They marry and Hi takes Lena and Gene in as his own children. Hi is a “wanderer” and travels around. He also turns out to be a drunkard. Docia finds out about this after marriage. Docia roams with him in two covered wagons, looking for work and a good piece of land. They travel back and forth between different states: Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Dakota Territory, and so on. But nowhere can Hi settle for a long time. Sometimes they hibernate for a few months on a rented farm. Sometimes they temporarily live with Henry & Polly. Docia sometimes has a hard time with the wandering existence, especially when Hi drinks all the money and she and the children go hungry. Docia does get pregnant with Hi. They eventually have 6 daughters together. Lena and Hi clash as Lena enters puberty. Gene sees Hi as his father, but wants to become a farmer, which Hi does not want. Docia is happy when they are around family and always tries to involve the family as well. The Ingalls family writes back and forth a lot. Hi eventually gets a job at the railroads and Docia can then work in the barracks to take care of the food. Lena and Gene then have to help her or babysit the little kids. Docia is always happy when they find a reasonably permanent place somewhere. She also writes about her concerns. In 1886 the diary ends. Then it goes back to 1918 and the death of Docia.

There are no drawings in the book, only a background image of the same flower at the beginning of each chapter.

Own opinion:

Bought book in 2021. Was recommended and pointed out by an American friend. I thought it would be interesting to read the story of Docia Ingalls, so I ordered it from Amazon.

It's a beautiful story and reads wonderfully, really to read through, interesting. Many about the whole family in terms of weddings, births and in the end also death. The loss of the Ingalls parents and how difficult Docia finds that. It's really a running story and interesting. Charles and Caroline are also mentioned and that Mary is going blind. Unfortunately a year too early for Laura to get married. But other than that it's a really good book and worth reading. It may have happened that way, but of course it was made up.

The book reads wonderfully!
