Samenvatting:

Een heel interessant boekje over de ontwikkeling van onderwijs in Kingsbury County in de periode dat Laura daar les had en daar les gaf.

Zeer veel feitelijke informatie is nagetrokken en onderzocht. Er is veel gekeken naar wie er les gaven en waar. Enkele van Laura’s vriendinnen of bekenden worden ook extra benoemd en uitgewerkt. Het beslaat het hele gebied waar Laura woonde. Op Kadastertekeningen wordt ook aangegeven waar de scholen lagen.

Personen die worden besproken zijn: Amos Whiting, Florence Garland, William Bradford Dodge Gray, Thomas Howard Garvin, Louis Eugene Whiting, Herbert Amos Whiting, Romano Norton Bunn, Carey Judson Thomas, Lettie Mary Hilton, Adelia Newton Lathrop, George Warren Crater en N. Eugene Osborn. Eliza Jane Wilder wordt uitgelicht. Er wordt vertelt over de James McKee Family en nog een lerares uit DeSmet Emma Dawley en over de leraar George Williams.

Ook wordt er zeer uitgebreid, een heel hoofdstuk, ingegaan op de Bouchie school en de familie Bouchie.

Het volgende hoofdstuk vertelt over de Perry school. Waarbij wordt in gegaan op Minnie Johnson.

Eigenlijk wordt elk hoofdstuk opgehangen aan het hoeveelste lesjaar in De Smet het is. Het hoofdstuk van het vijfde schooljaar is kort, maar gaat over een stuk over The De Smet Graded school. Minnie Barrows wordt uitgelicht, die Grace en Rose les heeft gegeven. En G. Elgetha Masters wordt toegelicht.

Het volgende hoofdstuk is gewijd aan de Wilkin School. Ida Wright wordt hier uitgelicht. Er worden in alle hoofdstukken heel veel namen, personen en data genoemd. Het is allemaal zeer uitgebreid onderzocht. In dit hoofdstuk staat ook vertelt over Genevieve Masters.

Het laatste hoofdstuk gaat over het eerste schoolgebouw in De Smet. Op het laatst wordt leraar Vidocq Owen nog uitgelicht.

Ook wordt er iets vertelt over de verschillende schoolgebouwtjes. Achterin staan de vragen van een leraren-examen.

Veel foto’s van de schoolgebouwen en ook van de leraressen staan er foto’s bij de stukjes. Verder heel veel kadastertekeningen, waardoor je duidelijk al het recht ingedeelde land kunt zien in Amerika. Ook staat er bij wie het land toebehoorde.

Schoolgebouwen waarvan foto’s in het boek staan, zijn het eerste schoolgebouw van De Smet, district 58 schoolhouse (bezocht door Harvey Dunn), de De Smet graded school en een foto van de Wilkin school.

Eigen mening:

Interessant boekje met nieuwe informatie over het onderwijs aan en door Laura. Goed geschreven, leesbaar en veel nieuwe informatie. Erg veel informatie, ook behoorlijk prettig leesbaar. Heel veel gedetailleerde informatie over mensen en de scholen.

A very interesting book about the development of education in Kingsbury County during the period that Laura was taught and taught there.

A lot of factual information has been checked and researched. A lot of attention was paid to who taught and where. Some of Laura's friends or acquaintances are also additionally named and elaborated upon. It covers the entire area where Laura lived. Land registry drawings also indicate where the schools were located.

Individuals discussed include: Amos Whiting, Florence Garland, William Bradford Dodge Gray, Thomas Howard Garvin, Louis Eugene Whiting, Herbert Amos Whiting, Romano Norton Bunn, Carey Judson Thomas, Lettie Mary Hilton, Adelia Newton Lathrop, George Warren Crater, and N .Eugene Osborn. Eliza Jane Wilder is featured. It tells about the James McKee Family and another teacher from DeSmet Emma Dawley and about the teacher George Williams.

The Bouchie school and the Bouchie family are also discussed in great detail, a whole chapter.

The next chapter tells about the Perry school. This focuses on Minnie Johnson.

Actually, each chapter is based on the number of teaching years in De Smet. The chapter of the fifth school year is short, but concerns a piece about The De Smet Graded school. Featured is Minnie Barrows, who taught Grace and Rose. And G. Elgetha Masters is explained.

The next chapter is devoted to the Wilkin School. Ida Wright is highlighted here. Many names, people and dates are mentioned in all chapters. It has all been very extensively researched. This chapter also tells about Genevieve Masters.

The last chapter is about the first school building in De Smet. At the end, teacher Vidocq Owen is highlighted.

Something is also said about the different school buildings. At the back are the questions for a teacher exam.

School buildings of which photos appear in the book include the first De Smet schoolhouse, district 58 schoolhouse (visited by Harvey Dunn), the De Smet graded school and a photo of the Wilkin school.

Own opinion:

Interesting booklet with new information about the education of and by Laura. Well written, readable and lots of new information. A lot of information, also quite pleasant to read. Lots of detailed information about people and the schools.

Een duidelijk kinderboek. Het verhaal is in eigen woorden geschreven en beschrijft heel globaal het verhaal van Laura. Het is een dun en eenvoudig boekje, maar er staan wel interessante dingen in. Zoals dat het leven in de winter op de prairie zwaarder is dan in de bossen, waar meer bescherming is. Dat de familie bij regen in de huifkar moest schuilen en bij droog weer rond het kampvuur. Dat het zwaar was om een familie mee te nemen in een huifkar. Dat Mary, Laura en Carrie erg “close” waren. Er staan ook een paar foutjes in: dat de familie WILDER ziek werd in Walnut Grove, dat moet natuurlijk de familie INGALLS zijn.  Tevens wordt vertelt dat Almanzo ziek werd terwijl ze al in Mansfield woonden, terwijl Laura en Almanzo difteritis kregen in DeSmet. En er wordt gedaan alsof Rose in Mansfield is geboren en dat Laura haar genoemd heeft naar de bloemen die je zag op de boerderij. Rose is wel vernoemd naar bloemen, maar dan naar de Prairie-rozen van DeSmet.

Het boekje heeft 24 bladzijden en eindigt met een samenvatting van de moeilijke woorden die in het boek voorkomen.

Tekeningen:

De foto's in dit boekje zijn duidelijk en goed. Wel bekend. Enkele algemene nieuwe foto's. Vooral bekende foto’s van de familie en enkele algemene foto’s van pioniers en hun huizen.

Plaatjes/ foto’s die in het boek staan zijn onder andere: een plattegrond van Amerika met de staten waar Laura heeft gewoond, de jeugdfoto van Laura, de trouwfoto van Pa en Ma, een foto van een huifkar met een 6-span paarden, verschillende foto’s van een gezin voor een blokhut, de foto van de Ingalls zusjes, de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura, een foto van een schooltje met kinderen er voor, het huis op Rocky Ridge, een foto van Rose en nog een foto van Laura op leeftijd.

Eigen mening:

Simpel boekje, weinig nieuwe tekst, paar foutjes, foto’s zijn bekend. Geen aanwinst. En verdrietig dat er fouten in staan.

A clear children's book. The story is written in her own words and describes Laura's story very roughly. It is a thin and simple book, but it does contain interesting things. Like how life in winter on the prairie is harder than in the forests, where there is more protection. That the family had to take shelter in the covered wagon when it rained and around the campfire when it was dry. That it was hard to take a family in a covered wagon. That Mary, Laura and Carrie were very “close”. There are also a few errors: that the WILDER family became ill in Walnut Grove, which of course must be the INGALLS family. It is also said that Almanzo became ill while they were already living in Mansfield, while Laura and Almanzo contracted diphtheria in DeSmet. And it is pretended that Rose was born in Mansfield and that Laura named her after the flowers you saw on the farm. Rose is named after flowers, but after DeSmet's Prairie roses.

The booklet has 24 pages and ends with a summary of the difficult words that appear in the book.

Drawings:

The photos in this booklet are clear and good. Well known. Some general new photos. Mainly famous photos of the family and some general photos of pioneers and their homes.

Pictures/photos in the book include: a map of America with the states where Laura lived, Laura's childhood photo, Ma and Pa's wedding photo, a photo of a covered wagon with a team of 6 horses, various photos of a family in front of a log cabin, the photo of the Ingalls sisters, the wedding photo of Almanzo and Laura, a photo of a school with children in front of it, the house on Rocky Ridge, a photo of Rose and another photo of Laura at an elderly age.

Own opinion:

Simple booklet, little new text, a few errors, photos are known. No asset. And sad that there are mistakes.

Samenvatting:

Het boek beslaat de hele periode van Laura’s leven. Verdeeld in 6 hoofdstukken. Eerst de jaren rondom 1860. Laura’s geboorte en beginjaren in de Big Woods en op de Kansas Prairie. Het gaat ook nog over de familie en de aanschaf van het land van pa en Henry. Ook wordt de Civil war besproken en de massacre in Minnesota, die nog niet zo heel lang was geleden en waardoor ma mogelijk bang was voor indianen. In het hoofdstuk wordt gezegd dat oom Joseph is gestorven door dood-bloeding tijdens de Civil war. Een wond die hij had ging weer open en hij bloedde dood voor deze kon worden geopereerd. Ook wordt de Bender-familie besproken en blijkt dat slachtoffers van deze familie kennissen waren van de Ingalls en bij hen in de buurt woonden.

Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over de jaren 1870. De familie Ingalls verhuist weer terug naar de Big Woods en dan verder naar Walnut Grove. Het gaat natuurlijk over de sprinkhanenplaag die de oogst vernietigd en de dood van kleine Freddie. Dan de reis naar Burr Oak en het leven daar in het hotel, waar ma erg hard moest werken. Het gezin verhuisd naar de kruidenier, waar de mannen in de avond komen luisteren naar het citeren van de meisjes Ingalls. Grace wordt geboren en ze verlaten Burr Oak in de nacht. Terug naar Walnut Grove, waar het ook weer veel moeite kost om het hoofd boven water te houden. Dan wordt mary ziek en blind. Daarna krijgt pa werk in het railroad-kamp en gaan ze daar heen.

De volgende 10 jaar gaan over De Smet en de bouw van de stad. Het leven op de homestead en de baantjes die Laura heeft om geld te verdienen. De lange winter natuurlijk met de Masters samen. Het vertrek van Mary naar het college, wat Laura ook wel had gewild. En de ontwikkeling van mannen die geïnteresseerd zijn in Laura. Natuurlijk was Almanzo uiteindelijk degene die haar hart won en ze trouwt met hem.

Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over de jaren 1890. De eerste zware jaren van het huwelijk met veel tegenslag, de geboorte van Rose, de dood van hun baby-zoon (wist Laura al meteen dat er iets mis was, omdat ze hem niet meteen een naam heeft gegeven?) en de brand in het huis en de difteritis. Uiteindelijk vertrekt het gezin naar Spring Valley om bij te komen en daarna gaan ze tijdelijk naar Florida, maar Laura kan daar echt niet aarden. Het gezin Wilder keert terug naar De Smet en Laura en Almanzo werken hard om te sparen. Ze zijn nog steeds arm en wonen in een huis zonder meubels. Uiteindelijk reizen ze in een huifkar, samen met de Cooley’s naar Mansfield. Daar beginnen Laura en Almanzo weer met heel weinig op hun Rocky Ridge, wat ze door hard werken weten uit te bouwen tot een mooie boerderij.

In het hele boek wordt regelmatig terug gegrepen op Pioneer Girl en ook steeds meer op Rose haar brieven en verhalen.

Dan komt de periode van 1911 tot 1943 waarin Laura begint met het schrijven van artikelen voor de Missouri Ruralist. Over Rocky Ridge, soms over haar verleden. De periode waarin Laura ook begint aan Pioneer Girl, waarin ze naar San Fransciso reist en later met Almanzo terug naar De Smet. Uiteindelijk gaat het over de ontwikkeling van de boeken. Slechts zijdelings wordt Rose’ bijdrage genoemd. Daarna sluit het boek heel snel af met de laatste jaren. De dood van goede familieleden en uiteindelijk Almanzo. Dat Rose naar huis komt om op het einde bij Laura te zijn.

Het eindigt met een mooi stukje, dat een aantal jaren voor Laura’s dood, op kerstavond, kinderen spontaan besluiten om Laura een kerst-serenade te gaan brengen. Laura komt niet naar buiten, maar luistert, staande achter een raam in het lamplicht naar de aubade, in tranen.

Dan zijn er nog verschillende bijlagen in het boek. Onder andere een stuk uit het interview met de Ruralist, stukjes uit Pioneer Girl en een artikel dat door Laura is geschreven. Ook een stukje uit de brieven naar Almanzo als Laura in San Franscisco is en een stukje van haar dagboek van de reis naar De Smet terug. Stukjes uit een artikel en stukjes uit brieven die kinderen naar Laura hebben gestuurd.

Tekeningen:

Er staan helemaal geen tekeningen in het boek. Op de kaft staat een bekende foto van Laura.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 via Bol.com. Het is een boek uit 2015, maar ik wilde het toch wel eens lezen. Al met al is het een interessant boekje met veel informatie en ook wat nieuwe informatie. Informatie net weer wat anders verzameld en geïnterpreteerd dan in andere boeken. Het leest wel vlot.

The book covers the entire period of Laura's life. Divided into 6 chapters. First the years around 1860. Laura's birth and early years in the Big Woods and on the Kansas Prairie. It is also about the family and the purchase of Pa and Henry's land. The Civil War is also discussed and the massacre in Minnesota, which was not so long ago and which may have caused Ma to be afraid of Indians. In the chapter it is said that Uncle Joseph died of exsanguination during the Civil War. A wound he had reopened and he bled to death before it could be operated. The Bender family is also discussed and it appears that victims of this family were acquaintances of the Ingalls and lived near them.

The next chapter focuses on the 1870s. The Ingalls family moves back to the Big Woods and then on to Walnut Grove. It is of course about the grasshopper-plague that destroys the crops and the death of little Freddie. Then the trip to Burr Oak and life there in the hotel, where Ma had to work very hard. The family moved to the grocery store, where the men come in the evening to listen to the Ingalls girls quoting. Grace is born and they leave Burr Oak in the night. Back to Walnut Grove, where it takes a lot of effort to keep their head above water. Then Mary becomes ill and blind. Then Pa gets a job at the railroad camp and they go there.

The next 10 years are about De Smet and the construction of the city. Life on the homestead and the jobs Laura has to earn money. The long winter of course, with the Masters. Mary's departure for college, which Laura also wanted. And the development of men interested in Laura. Of course, Almanzo was the one who won her heart in the end and she marries him.

The next chapter is about the 1890s. The first difficult years of the marriage with many setbacks, the birth of Rose, the death of their baby son (Laura knew immediately that something was wrong because she did not immediately give him a name?) and the fire in the house and the diphtheria. Ultimately, the family leaves for Spring Valley to recover and then they temporarily go to Florida, but Laura really can't settle there. The Wilder family returns to De Smet and Laura and Almanzo work hard to save money. They are still poor and live in a house without furniture. Ultimately, they travel in a covered wagon, together with the Cooley's, to Mansfield. There, Laura and Almanzo start again with very little on their Rocky Ridge, which through hard work they manage to develop into a beautiful farm.

Throughout the book, we regularly return to Pioneer Girl and increasingly to Rose's letters and stories.

Then comes the period from 1911 to 1943 when Laura begins writing articles for the Missouri Ruralist. About Rocky Ridge, sometimes about her past. The period in which Laura also starts Pioneer Girl, in which she travels to San Fransciso and later back to De Smet with Almanzo. Ultimately it is about the development of the books. Rose's contribution is only mentioned in passing. The book then closes very quickly with the last years. The death of close family members and ultimately Almanzo. That Rose comes home to be with Laura at the end.

It ends with a beautiful piece that happened a few years before Laura's death, on Christmas Eve, children spontaneously decide to give Laura a Christmas serenade. Laura does not come outside, but, standing behind a window in the lamplight, listens to the aubade, in tears.

Then there are several appendices in the book. This includes an excerpt from the interview with the Ruralist, excerpts from Pioneer Girl and an article written by Laura. Also a piece from the letters to Almanzo when Laura is in San Francisco and a piece of her diary from the trip back to De Smet. Parts from an article and parts from letters that children have sent to Laura.

Drawings:

There are no drawings in the book at all. The cover features a well-known photo of Laura.

Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 via Bol.com. It's a book from 2015, but I still wanted to read it. All in all it is an interesting book with a lot of information and also some new information. Information collected and interpreted slightly differently than in other books. It reads smoothly.

Dit fotoboek heb ik zelf gemaakt en bestaat alleen maar uit foto’s van Laura Ingalls Wilder die ik heb gevonden op internet en vooral Facebook. Er staat weinig tekst in het boek, alleen her en der namen en zo.

Er staan foto’s in van de Card Exchange en van toen ik een groot pakket uit Amerika kreeg met boeken die ik had besteld.

Dit boek is “Allerlei” uit 2020-2021, de eerste keer dat ik een fotoboek maakte van een deel van mijn verzameling. De foto’s die ik heb gevonden van de verschillende plaatsen met musea staan hier ook in, maaar de ook graven, souveniers, memorablia, quotes, enzovoorts. Het is geen leesboek, maar een kijkboek.

Tekeningen:

Er staan heel veel foto’s in het boek, het is een fotoboek. Met alles wat ik heb verzameld of heb gekregen/ gekocht in 2021/2020. Er staan veel foto’s in van de sites/ musea die mensen in het afgelopen jaar op Facebook hebben gezet. Vooral van Malone zijn er veel foto’s en die zijn wel mooi. Verder zijn er nog wat foto’s van de familie Ingalls en hun bekenden/ familie. Er staan kleine-huis boeken in in andere talen. Verder veel foto’s van quotes. Het is een fotoboek.

Eigen mening:

Omdat ik het zelf heb gemaakt, is het natuurlijk een mooi boek. Het is uniek. Het is een mooi boek en duidelijke foto’s. Ik ben er wel trots op. Het is een van de eerste boeken die ik zelf heb gemaakt, van het jaar 2020-2021. Alle plaatjes van die jaren zijn verzameld. De foto’s zijn doorgaans bekend, de papieren heb ik verzameld. Het is een bundeling van foto’s die ik heb gevonden en die alles bij elkaar zet.

I made this photo book myself and it consists only of photos by Laura Ingalls Wilder that I found on the internet and especially Facebook. There is little text in the book, just names and such.

It contains photos of the Card Exchange and when I received a large package from America with books that I had ordered.

This book is “Allerlei(Everything)” from 2020-2021, the first time I made a photo book of part of my collection. The photos I found of the various places with museums are also included here, but also graves, souvenirs, memorablia, quotes, and so on. It is not a reading book, but a viewing book.

Drawings:

There are a lot of photos in the book, it is a photo book. With everything I collected or received/bought in 2021/2020. It contains many photos of the sites/museums that people have put on Facebook in the past year. There are many photos of Malone in particular and they are beautiful. There are also some photos of the Ingalls family and their acquaintances/family. It contains Little house books in other languages. Also many photos of quotes. It's a photo book.

Own opinion:

Because I made it myself, it is of course a beautiful book. It's unique. It is a beautiful book and clear photos. I'm proud of it. It is one of the first books I made myself, from the year 2020-2021. All pictures from those years have been collected. The photos are usually known, I have collected the papers. It's a collection of photos I found that puts everything together.

Het algemene verhaal van Laura Ingalls vanaf haar geboorte tot aan haar dood. Eerst dat ze in het bos woont en Ma zorgt voor koken, naaien en het huishouden en Pa zorgt voor het vlees en de oogst. Ze volgen wel de werkelijke tijdlijn, dus in 1868 gaan ze naar de prairie. In 1870 wordt Carrie geboren. Er wordt simpel uitgelegd dat de indianen het er niet mee eens zijn. Dan vertrekken ze naar Walnut Grove. Er wordt beschreven dat Laura graag op de prairie speelt, terwijl Mary Ma helpt en voor Carrie zorgt. Dan mogen de meisjes naar school. Pa bouwt een nieuw huis. Helaas komen de sprinkhanen, waardoor er problemen ontstaan. Er wordt niet benoemd dat het gezin naar Burr Oak gaat, wel dat Freddie wordt geboren en sterft. Dat Grace wordt geboren in 1877. Er wordt heel kort vertelt dat Mary blind wordt. Dan gaan ze aan het Zilvermeer wonen in 1879, waar ze in het landmetershuis wonen tot de Familie Boast komt. Daarna verhuizen ze naar de stad. Er wordt snel wat vertelt over de lange winter. Er staat een klein zinnetje dat Laura zelf gedichtjes schrijft in kleine, zelfgemaakte boekjes. De eerste school van Laura wordt benoemd en dat Almanzo haar komt ophalen. Daarna dat ze verliefd worden en dat ze trouwen. Er wordt vertelt van de eerste zware jaren en de geboorte van Rose. Daarna dat ze nog in Minnesota en Florida wonen, voor ze in 1894 naar Mansfield, Missouri vertrekken. Dan wordt vertelt dat ze de boerderijk opbouwen en dat als alles goed gaat, Laura begint met schrijven eerst voor de Missouri Ruralist en later, met behulp van Rose, ook voor nationale bladen. Dan uiteindelijk de verhalen van Pa en de kleine huis boeken. Er wordt benoemd dat Almanzo sterft in 1949 en uiteindelijk Laura.

Alles is in hele korte zinnen beschreven. Sommige details staan er dan ineens weer in, terwijl andere niet eens benoemd worden, of slechts met een paar woorden.

Het verhaal is snel te lezen, niet volledig, wel prima.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn nieuw en hebben echt te maken met het verhaal van Laura Ingalls Wilder. Het is een aparte tekenstijl die deels overeen komt met de streepjesstijl van Helen Sewell en deels heel eigen is. De plaatjes zijn groot en passen bij het verhaal.

Er zijn veel details in de plaatjes verwerkt. Zo staan op het eerste plaatje van het gezin in de blokhut de volgende details: verschillende kruiden aan de muur, een quilt aan de muur, een bolletje wol onder de kat, Mary met haar pop op een stoeltje, het herderinnetje op de schoorsteenmantel, maar wel een kachel ipv een haardvuur. Een ander voorbeeld van een gedetailleerde tekening is van het huis op de prairie waar de sprinkhanen aan alle kanten over en omheen lopen, de kippen eten de sprinkhanen, Carrie staat in huis op een stoel te huilen, Ma veegt sprinkhanen naar buiten, Mary en Pa zijn op het veld bezig.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 en uit Amerika laten komen in het pakket van Susan Duggan. Het is een netjes boek, oud bibliotheekboek. De tekeningen zijn bijzonder, maar wel passend en niet slecht. Het is een kinderboek. Een leuk boek om te hebben, maar geen must-have.

Resume:

The overall story of Laura Ingalls from her birth to her death. First that she lives in the forest and Ma takes care of cooking, sewing and housework and Pa takes care of the meat and the harvest. They do follow the actual timeline, so in 1868 they go to the prairie. Carrie was born in 1870. It is simply explained that the Indians do not agree with them living on their land. Then they leave for Walnut Grove. Laura is described as enjoying playing on the prairie, while Mary helps Ma and cares for Carrie. Then the girls can go to school. Pa is building a new house. Unfortunately, the grasshoppers come, causing problems. It is not mentioned that the family goes to Burr Oak, but it is mentioned that Freddie is born and dies. That Grace is born in 1877. It is briefly mentioned that Mary becomes blind. Then they moved to Silver Lake in 1879, where they lived in the surveyor's house until the Boast Family arrived. Then they move to the city. Soon something will be said about the long winter. There is a small sentence that Laura writes poems herself in small, self-made books. Laura's first school is announced and Almanzo is coming to bring her home. Then they fall in love and get married. It tells of the first difficult years and the birth of Rose. They then lived in Minnesota and Florida before moving to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894. Then it is said that they are building the farm and that if all goes well, Laura will start writing first for the Missouri Ruralist and later, with the help of Rose, also for national magazines. Then finally Laura starts writting books to keep Pa’s stories alive. It is mentioned that Almanzo dies in 1949 and eventually Laura.

Everything is described in very short sentences. Some details are suddenly included again, while others are not even mentioned, or only mentioned in a few words.

The story is quick to read, not complete, but fine.

Drawings:

The drawings are new and really relate to the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is a special drawing style that partly corresponds to the dashed style of Helen Sewell and partly is very unique. The pictures are large and fit the story.

Many details have been incorporated into the images. For example, the first picture of the family in the log cabin shows the following details: various herbs on the wall, a quilt on the wall, a ball of wool under the cat, Mary with her doll on a chair, the shepherdess on the mantelpiece, but a stove instead of a fireplace. Another example of a detailed drawing is of the house on the prairie with the grasshoppers walking over and around it on all sides, the chickens eating the grasshoppers, Carrie standing on a chair in the house crying, Ma sweeping grasshoppers outside, Mary and Pa are busy in the field.

Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 and had it shipped from the USA in the package from Susan Duggan. It's a neat book, old library book. The drawings are special, but appropriate and not bad. It's a children's book. A nice book to have, but not a must-have.

In het tweede deel wordt vertelt over Laura en haar ontwikkeling tot de schrijfster die ze is geworden. Over het aandeel van Rose in de boeken.

Er is veel gebruik gemaakt van eerder verschenen biografieën oa van Miller, Hines en Anderson. Ook is er veel verwijzing naar correspondentie tussen Laura en Rose. Het proces wordt erg goed beschreven.

Het boek heeft 17 hoofdstukken.

Tekeningen:

Er staan maar weinig foto’s in het boek en de foto’s die er staan, zijn de bekende foto’s. Zoals de foto’s van Pa en Ma, de familiefoto van de familie Ingalls, de trouwfoto van Almanzo en Laura, Almanzo en Laura op leeftijd in de Badlands, een foto van het landmeters-huis, een foto van Rocky Ridge, een foto van Rose en foto’s van kaften van de eerste druk van de boeken.

Eigen mening:

Een zeer interessant boek om te lezen. wel kleine letters en moeilijker Engels. Maar goed gedocumenteerd en uitgezocht.

Een mooi boek over Laura’s leven.

The second part tells about Laura and her development into the writer she has become. About Rose's part in the books.

Much use has been made of previously published biographies, including those of Miller, Hines and Anderson. There are also many references to correspondence between Laura and Rose. The process is very well described.

The book has 17 chapters.

Drawings:

There are few photos in the book and the photos that are there are the well-known photos. Such as the photos of Ma and Pa, the family photo of the Ingalls family, the wedding photo of Almanzo and Laura, Almanzo and Laura at age in the Badlands, a photo of the surveyor's house, a photo of Rocky Ridge, a photo of Rose and photos of covers of the first edition of the books.

Own opinion:

A very interesting book to read. small letters and more difficult English. But well documented and researched.

Samenvatting:

Een biografie over Laura. Een mengsel van de werkelijkheid en de fictie. Een fijn geschreven boek, prettig om te lezen. Het boek beschrijft eigenlijk vooral de eerste jaren en reizen van de familie Ingalls en gaat niet diep in op de periode in Mansfield.

Het boek heeft 15 hoofdstukken.

In het boek is ook dialoog opgenomen.

Er staan geen plaatjes in het boek. Bij elk hoofdstuk staat een plaatje van een arrenslee met paard en een gezinnetje er in, maar dat is bij elk hoofdstuk hetzelfde en heeft er weinig mee te maken

Eigen mening:

Simpel boekje, wel prettig om te lezen, niet teveel nieuwe informatie. Een verhaal. Beetje hak op de tak en niet helemaal volgens de waarheid, maar die is er wel in verweven.

Simple book, pleasant to read, not too much new information. A story. A bit of a stretch and not entirely according to the truth, but it is woven into it.
