Samenvatting:

Het algemene verhaal van Laura Ingalls vanaf haar geboorte tot aan haar dood. Eerst dat ze in het bos woont en Ma zorgt voor koken, naaien en het huishouden en Pa zorgt voor het vlees en de oogst. Ze volgen wel de werkelijke tijdlijn, dus in 1868 gaan ze naar de prairie. In 1870 wordt Carrie geboren. Er wordt simpel uitgelegd dat de indianen het er niet mee eens zijn. Dan vertrekken ze naar Walnut Grove. Er wordt beschreven dat Laura graag op de prairie speelt, terwijl Mary Ma helpt en voor Carrie zorgt. Dan mogen de meisjes naar school. Pa bouwt een nieuw huis. Helaas komen de sprinkhanen, waardoor er problemen ontstaan. Er wordt niet benoemd dat het gezin naar Burr Oak gaat, wel dat Freddie wordt geboren en sterft. Dat Grace wordt geboren in 1877. Er wordt heel kort vertelt dat Mary blind wordt. Dan gaan ze aan het Zilvermeer wonen in 1879, waar ze in het landmetershuis wonen tot de Familie Boast komt. Daarna verhuizen ze naar de stad. Er wordt snel wat vertelt over de lange winter. Er staat een klein zinnetje dat Laura zelf gedichtjes schrijft in kleine, zelfgemaakte boekjes. De eerste school van Laura wordt benoemd en dat Almanzo haar komt ophalen. Daarna dat ze verliefd worden en dat ze trouwen. Er wordt vertelt van de eerste zware jaren en de geboorte van Rose. Daarna dat ze nog in Minnesota en Florida wonen, voor ze in 1894 naar Mansfield, Missouri vertrekken. Dan wordt vertelt dat ze de boerderijk opbouwen en dat als alles goed gaat, Laura begint met schrijven eerst voor de Missouri Ruralist en later, met behulp van Rose, ook voor nationale bladen. Dan uiteindelijk de verhalen van Pa en de kleine huis boeken. Er wordt benoemd dat Almanzo sterft in 1949 en uiteindelijk Laura.

Alles is in hele korte zinnen beschreven. Sommige details staan er dan ineens weer in, terwijl andere niet eens benoemd worden, of slechts met een paar woorden.

Het verhaal is snel te lezen, niet volledig, wel prima.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn nieuw en hebben echt te maken met het verhaal van Laura Ingalls Wilder. Het is een aparte tekenstijl die deels overeen komt met de streepjesstijl van Helen Sewell en deels heel eigen is. De plaatjes zijn groot en passen bij het verhaal.

Er zijn veel details in de plaatjes verwerkt. Zo staan op het eerste plaatje van het gezin in de blokhut de volgende details: verschillende kruiden aan de muur, een quilt aan de muur, een bolletje wol onder de kat, Mary met haar pop op een stoeltje, het herderinnetje op de schoorsteenmantel, maar wel een kachel ipv een haardvuur. Een ander voorbeeld van een gedetailleerde tekening is van het huis op de prairie waar de sprinkhanen aan alle kanten over en omheen lopen, de kippen eten de sprinkhanen, Carrie staat in huis op een stoel te huilen, Ma veegt sprinkhanen naar buiten, Mary en Pa zijn op het veld bezig.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 en uit Amerika laten komen in het pakket van Susan Duggan. Het is een netjes boek, oud bibliotheekboek. De tekeningen zijn bijzonder, maar wel passend en niet slecht. Het is een kinderboek. Een leuk boek om te hebben, maar geen must-have.

Resume:

The overall story of Laura Ingalls from her birth to her death. First that she lives in the forest and Ma takes care of cooking, sewing and housework and Pa takes care of the meat and the harvest. They do follow the actual timeline, so in 1868 they go to the prairie. Carrie was born in 1870. It is simply explained that the Indians do not agree with them living on their land. Then they leave for Walnut Grove. Laura is described as enjoying playing on the prairie, while Mary helps Ma and cares for Carrie. Then the girls can go to school. Pa is building a new house. Unfortunately, the grasshoppers come, causing problems. It is not mentioned that the family goes to Burr Oak, but it is mentioned that Freddie is born and dies. That Grace is born in 1877. It is briefly mentioned that Mary becomes blind. Then they moved to Silver Lake in 1879, where they lived in the surveyor's house until the Boast Family arrived. Then they move to the city. Soon something will be said about the long winter. There is a small sentence that Laura writes poems herself in small, self-made books. Laura's first school is announced and Almanzo is coming to bring her home. Then they fall in love and get married. It tells of the first difficult years and the birth of Rose. They then lived in Minnesota and Florida before moving to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894. Then it is said that they are building the farm and that if all goes well, Laura will start writing first for the Missouri Ruralist and later, with the help of Rose, also for national magazines. Then finally Laura starts writting books to keep Pa’s stories alive. It is mentioned that Almanzo dies in 1949 and eventually Laura.

Everything is described in very short sentences. Some details are suddenly included again, while others are not even mentioned, or only mentioned in a few words.

The story is quick to read, not complete, but fine.

Drawings:

The drawings are new and really relate to the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is a special drawing style that partly corresponds to the dashed style of Helen Sewell and partly is very unique. The pictures are large and fit the story.

Many details have been incorporated into the images. For example, the first picture of the family in the log cabin shows the following details: various herbs on the wall, a quilt on the wall, a ball of wool under the cat, Mary with her doll on a chair, the shepherdess on the mantelpiece, but a stove instead of a fireplace. Another example of a detailed drawing is of the house on the prairie with the grasshoppers walking over and around it on all sides, the chickens eating the grasshoppers, Carrie standing on a chair in the house crying, Ma sweeping grasshoppers outside, Mary and Pa are busy in the field.

Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 and had it shipped from the USA in the package from Susan Duggan. It's a neat book, old library book. The drawings are special, but appropriate and not bad. It's a children's book. A nice book to have, but not a must-have.
