Samenvatting:

Het boek beslaat de hele periode van Laura’s leven. Verdeeld in 6 hoofdstukken. Eerst de jaren rondom 1860. Laura’s geboorte en beginjaren in de Big Woods en op de Kansas Prairie. Het gaat ook nog over de familie en de aanschaf van het land van pa en Henry. Ook wordt de Civil war besproken en de massacre in Minnesota, die nog niet zo heel lang was geleden en waardoor ma mogelijk bang was voor indianen. In het hoofdstuk wordt gezegd dat oom Joseph is gestorven door dood-bloeding tijdens de Civil war. Een wond die hij had ging weer open en hij bloedde dood voor deze kon worden geopereerd. Ook wordt de Bender-familie besproken en blijkt dat slachtoffers van deze familie kennissen waren van de Ingalls en bij hen in de buurt woonden.

Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over de jaren 1870. De familie Ingalls verhuist weer terug naar de Big Woods en dan verder naar Walnut Grove. Het gaat natuurlijk over de sprinkhanenplaag die de oogst vernietigd en de dood van kleine Freddie. Dan de reis naar Burr Oak en het leven daar in het hotel, waar ma erg hard moest werken. Het gezin verhuisd naar de kruidenier, waar de mannen in de avond komen luisteren naar het citeren van de meisjes Ingalls. Grace wordt geboren en ze verlaten Burr Oak in de nacht. Terug naar Walnut Grove, waar het ook weer veel moeite kost om het hoofd boven water te houden. Dan wordt mary ziek en blind. Daarna krijgt pa werk in het railroad-kamp en gaan ze daar heen.

De volgende 10 jaar gaan over De Smet en de bouw van de stad. Het leven op de homestead en de baantjes die Laura heeft om geld te verdienen. De lange winter natuurlijk met de Masters samen. Het vertrek van Mary naar het college, wat Laura ook wel had gewild. En de ontwikkeling van mannen die geïnteresseerd zijn in Laura. Natuurlijk was Almanzo uiteindelijk degene die haar hart won en ze trouwt met hem.

Het volgende hoofdstuk gaat over de jaren 1890. De eerste zware jaren van het huwelijk met veel tegenslag, de geboorte van Rose, de dood van hun baby-zoon (wist Laura al meteen dat er iets mis was, omdat ze hem niet meteen een naam heeft gegeven?) en de brand in het huis en de difteritis. Uiteindelijk vertrekt het gezin naar Spring Valley om bij te komen en daarna gaan ze tijdelijk naar Florida, maar Laura kan daar echt niet aarden. Het gezin Wilder keert terug naar De Smet en Laura en Almanzo werken hard om te sparen. Ze zijn nog steeds arm en wonen in een huis zonder meubels. Uiteindelijk reizen ze in een huifkar, samen met de Cooley’s naar Mansfield. Daar beginnen Laura en Almanzo weer met heel weinig op hun Rocky Ridge, wat ze door hard werken weten uit te bouwen tot een mooie boerderij.

In het hele boek wordt regelmatig terug gegrepen op Pioneer Girl en ook steeds meer op Rose haar brieven en verhalen.

Dan komt de periode van 1911 tot 1943 waarin Laura begint met het schrijven van artikelen voor de Missouri Ruralist. Over Rocky Ridge, soms over haar verleden. De periode waarin Laura ook begint aan Pioneer Girl, waarin ze naar San Fransciso reist en later met Almanzo terug naar De Smet. Uiteindelijk gaat het over de ontwikkeling van de boeken. Slechts zijdelings wordt Rose’ bijdrage genoemd. Daarna sluit het boek heel snel af met de laatste jaren. De dood van goede familieleden en uiteindelijk Almanzo. Dat Rose naar huis komt om op het einde bij Laura te zijn.

Het eindigt met een mooi stukje, dat een aantal jaren voor Laura’s dood, op kerstavond, kinderen spontaan besluiten om Laura een kerst-serenade te gaan brengen. Laura komt niet naar buiten, maar luistert, staande achter een raam in het lamplicht naar de aubade, in tranen.

Dan zijn er nog verschillende bijlagen in het boek. Onder andere een stuk uit het interview met de Ruralist, stukjes uit Pioneer Girl en een artikel dat door Laura is geschreven. Ook een stukje uit de brieven naar Almanzo als Laura in San Franscisco is en een stukje van haar dagboek van de reis naar De Smet terug. Stukjes uit een artikel en stukjes uit brieven die kinderen naar Laura hebben gestuurd.

Er staan helemaal geen tekeningen in het boek. Op de kaft staat een bekende foto van Laura.

Eigen mening:

Boek gekocht in 2021 via Bol.com. Het is een boek uit 2015, maar ik wilde het toch wel eens lezen. Al met al is het een interessant boekje met veel informatie en ook wat nieuwe informatie. Informatie net weer wat anders verzameld en geïnterpreteerd dan in andere boeken. Het leest wel vlot.

The book covers the entire period of Laura's life. Divided into 6 chapters. First the years around 1860. Laura's birth and early years in the Big Woods and on the Kansas Prairie. It is also about the family and the purchase of Pa and Henry's land. The Civil War is also discussed and the massacre in Minnesota, which was not so long ago and which may have caused Ma to be afraid of Indians. In the chapter it is said that Uncle Joseph died of exsanguination during the Civil War. A wound he had reopened and he bled to death before it could be operated. The Bender family is also discussed and it appears that victims of this family were acquaintances of the Ingalls and lived near them.

The next chapter focuses on the 1870s. The Ingalls family moves back to the Big Woods and then on to Walnut Grove. It is of course about the grasshopper-plague that destroys the crops and the death of little Freddie. Then the trip to Burr Oak and life there in the hotel, where Ma had to work very hard. The family moved to the grocery store, where the men come in the evening to listen to the Ingalls girls quoting. Grace is born and they leave Burr Oak in the night. Back to Walnut Grove, where it takes a lot of effort to keep their head above water. Then Mary becomes ill and blind. Then Pa gets a job at the railroad camp and they go there.

The next 10 years are about De Smet and the construction of the city. Life on the homestead and the jobs Laura has to earn money. The long winter of course, with the Masters. Mary's departure for college, which Laura also wanted. And the development of men interested in Laura. Of course, Almanzo was the one who won her heart in the end and she marries him.

The next chapter is about the 1890s. The first difficult years of the marriage with many setbacks, the birth of Rose, the death of their baby son (Laura knew immediately that something was wrong because she did not immediately give him a name?) and the fire in the house and the diphtheria. Ultimately, the family leaves for Spring Valley to recover and then they temporarily go to Florida, but Laura really can't settle there. The Wilder family returns to De Smet and Laura and Almanzo work hard to save money. They are still poor and live in a house without furniture. Ultimately, they travel in a covered wagon, together with the Cooley's, to Mansfield. There, Laura and Almanzo start again with very little on their Rocky Ridge, which through hard work they manage to develop into a beautiful farm.

Throughout the book, we regularly return to Pioneer Girl and increasingly to Rose's letters and stories.

Then comes the period from 1911 to 1943 when Laura begins writing articles for the Missouri Ruralist. About Rocky Ridge, sometimes about her past. The period in which Laura also starts Pioneer Girl, in which she travels to San Fransciso and later back to De Smet with Almanzo. Ultimately it is about the development of the books. Rose's contribution is only mentioned in passing. The book then closes very quickly with the last years. The death of close family members and ultimately Almanzo. That Rose comes home to be with Laura at the end.

It ends with a beautiful piece that happened a few years before Laura's death, on Christmas Eve, children spontaneously decide to give Laura a Christmas serenade. Laura does not come outside, but, standing behind a window in the lamplight, listens to the aubade, in tears.

Then there are several appendices in the book. This includes an excerpt from the interview with the Ruralist, excerpts from Pioneer Girl and an article written by Laura. Also a piece from the letters to Almanzo when Laura is in San Francisco and a piece of her diary from the trip back to De Smet. Parts from an article and parts from letters that children have sent to Laura.

Drawings:

There are no drawings in the book at all. The cover features a well-known photo of Laura.

Own opinion:

Book purchased in 2021 via Bol.com. It's a book from 2015, but I still wanted to read it. All in all it is an interesting book with a lot of information and also some new information. Information collected and interpreted slightly differently than in other books. It reads smoothly.
