Samenvatting:

Een dun boekje, samengesteld door een van de oude vrijwilligers van het museum in Mansfield. Het is eigenlijk een boekje met samenstelling van artikelen geschreven door en over Laura Ingalls, Rose en Almanzo. Het zijn 16 artikelen met een voorwoord en wat extra informatie.

Een artikel gaat over het verplaatsen van de beek om water in huis te krijgen.

Twee artikelen van Rose over het leven in de Ozarks en op een boerderij, het leven wat ze in de artikelen vooral roemt. Een artikel over Laura, door iemand anders, over hoe ze toen was. En een artikel over de Morgan horse van Almanzo. En verschillende artikelen van Laura zoals ze zijn verschenen, vaak met overwegingen.

En het eerste artikel dat Laura ooit heeft gepubliceerd in DeSmet News, terwijl ze nog onderweg waren naar Mansfield en Laura een brief schreef over het land waar ze doorheen reden.

Tekeningen:

Er staan geen tekeningen in het boek, wel een aantal foto’s. Een paar bekende foto’s en een foto van de auto van Almanzo en Laura. Een mooie foto van Almanzo en Laura op een boomstam. Rose en Laura in de tuin iets aan het plukken en een overzichtsfoto van Rocky Ridge. Rose met haar ezeltje en Laura in het ravijn en natuurlijk van Rocky Ridge. Foto’s van Rose op verschillende leeftijden, een foto van de achterdeur op Rocky Ridge en een mooie foto van Rose op de trap in huis en een foto van de open haard.

Alle foto’s zijn in zwart-wit.

Eigen mening:

De artikelen die Laura heeft geschreven zijn inmiddels bekend, maar de andere artikelen, van Rose en over Laura zijn ook interessant. Het is een voorloper van boeken die later zijn samengesteld.

Dus in 2020 echt gelezen. Eigenlijk wel een mooi boekje en ook zeldzaam. De artikelen zijn leuk gekozen en kom je niet in andere boeken vaak tegen. De foto’s zijn wat bekenden, maar wel duidelijk en mooi. De taal is soms wat ouderwets en daardoor moeilijker te lezen en de schrijftaal van Laura vind ik interessanter en beter dan die van Rose.

Resume:

A thin booklet, compiled by one of the old volunteers at the museum in Mansfield. It is actually a booklet composed of articles written by and about Laura Ingalls, Rose and Almanzo. There are 16 articles with a foreword and some additional information.

One article is about moving the stream to get water into the house.

Two articles by Rose about life in the Ozarks and on a farm, the life she especially praises in the articles. An article about Laura, by someone else, about what she was like then. And an article about the Morgan horse from Almanzo. And various articles by Laura as they appeared, often with reflections.

And the first article Laura ever published in the DeSmet News, while they were still on their way to Mansfield and Laura wrote a letter about the country they were driving through.

Drawings:

There are no drawings in the book, but there are a number of photos. A few well-known photos and a photo of Almanzo and Laura's car. A beautiful photo of Almanzo and Laura on a tree trunk. Rose and Laura in the garden picking something and an overview photo of Rocky Ridge. Rose with her donkey and Laura in the ravine and of course Rocky Ridge. Photos of Rose at different ages, a photo of the back door on Rocky Ridge and a nice photo of Rose on the stairs in the house and a photo of the fireplace.

All photos are in black and white.

Own opinion:

The articles that Laura wrote are now well-known, but the other articles, by Rose and about Laura, are also interesting. It is a precursor to books that were compiled later.

So really read in 2020. Actually a nice book and also rare. The articles are nicely chosen and are not often found in other books. The photos are somewhat familiar, but clear and beautiful. The language is sometimes a bit old-fashioned and therefore more difficult to read and I find Laura's written language more interesting and better than that of Rose.
