Samenvatting:

Een eenvoudig verhaal voor kinderen, wat in eigen woorden en slechts heel kort stukjes het hele verhaal van Laura Ingalls vertelt. Het gaat over de reis naar Independence en dan vooral de reis met de huifkar. Vervolgens springt het verhaal naar het leven in Dakota, naar een gewone dag. Laura gaat wandelen met Mary en ze praten over het schrijven van een boek. Waar alles snel en kort wordt behandeld, duurt dit stuk juist lang. Vervolgens gaat er een stuk over South Dakota  en de reis naar Missouri. Dan een stuk over San Fransciso en vervolgens over dat Laura gaat schrijven.

Een heel simpel, dun kinderboekje. Het is het verhaal van Laura Ingalls in verhalende vorm. Dus geen saaie opsomming van de feiten. Het is simpel Engels en door het verhalende, ook leuk om te lezen. Er zijn allemaal korte hoofdstukken in het boekje die een tijdsperiode beschrijven. Zo begint het met de periode in "Minnesota 1874", is er een hoofdstuk "Dakota 1880" en een stuk van "South Dakota naar Missouri 1880s tot 1890s". "San Francisco 1915" en dan nog "Rocky Ridge 1930s". Al deze periodes worden vertelt in korte hoofdstukken. Wat er gebeurde en er wordt ook wel ingegaan op hoe ze zich gevoeld moet hebben, zoals; toen ze in San Francisco was, miste ze Almanzo. Ze herinnerde zich Pa's lach toe ze ouder werd.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn van Shelly O. Haas, wat abstracte, maar ook weer mooie tekeningen. Vaak hebben de tekeningen een dubbel beeld. De tekeningen zijn wel mooi, maar ook modern. Het past niet helemaal bij Laura.

De tekeningen zijn bijzonder. Zeer abstract en totaal anders dan we gewend zijn van Garth Williams. Maar toch zitten er hele mooie tekeningen tussen. Zoals de tekening waarop een oudere Laura aan het schrijven is en je tegelijk het beeld ziet van de kinderen Mary en Laura die spelen in het bos. Een tekening van Laura die schrijft bij het kampvuur tijdens de reis met de huifkar naar Missouri. Laura die op de prairie wandelt met blinde Mary. Pa die viool speelt. Andere tekeningen zijn wat vager en abstracter, maar niettemin is het toch de moeite waard om er goed naar te kijken.

Eigen mening:

Het boekje is leuk om te lezen, makkelijk, maar bevat weinig nieuwe informatie.

A simple story for children, which tells the whole story of Laura Ingalls in their own words and only very short pieces. It is about the journey to Independence and especially the journey with the covered wagon. Then the story jumps to life in Dakota, to an ordinary day. Laura goes for a walk with Mary and they talk about writing a book. While everything is covered quickly and briefly, this section actually takes a long time. Then there is a piece about South Dakota and the journey to Missouri. Then a piece about San Fransciso and then about what Laura is going to write.

A very simple, thin children's book. It is the story of Laura Ingalls in narrative form. So no boring summary of the facts. It is simple English and, because of the narrative, also fun to read. There are all these short chapters in the book that describe a time period. For example, it starts with the period in "Minnesota 1874", there is a chapter "Dakota 1880" and a section from "South Dakota to Missouri 1880s to 1890s". “San Francisco 1915” and then “Rocky Ridge 1930s”. All these periods are told in short chapters. What happened and how she must have felt is also discussed, such as; when she was in San Francisco, she missed Almanzo. She remembered Pa's smile as she got older.

Drawings:

The drawings are by Shelly O. Haas, somewhat abstract, but also beautiful drawings. The drawings often have a double image. The drawings are beautiful, but also modern. It doesn't quite suit Laura.

The drawings are special. Very abstract and completely different from what we are used to from Garth Williams. But there are still very beautiful drawings among them. Such as the drawing in which an older Laura is writing and at the same time you see the image of the children Mary and Laura playing in the forest. A drawing of Laura writing by the campfire during the covered wagon trip to Missouri. Laura walking on the prairie with blind Mary. Dad playing the violin. Other drawings are a bit vaguer and more abstract, but nevertheless they are still worth looking at closely.

Own opinion:

The book is fun to read, easy, but contains little new information.
