Samenvatting:

Het boek ziet er netjes uit. ER staan 10 hoofdstukken in het boek en 7 aanvullingen. Hoofdstuk 1 is een soort inleiding “het boek dat de depressie niet kon stoppen”. Het gaat over de depressie en hoe de eerste ontwikkeling van Laura’s boeken verlopen. Hoofdstuk 2 gaat over het leven in het grote bos. Hoofdstuk 3 over de priairie. Hoofdstuk 4 over Plum Creek. Hoofdstuk 5 over zware tijden. Hoofdstuk 6 over de prairie homestead. Hoofdstuk 7 over opgroeien. Hoofdstuk 8 over vreugde en ellende. Hoofdstuk 9 over Rocky Ridge en hoofdstuk 10 over dat de boeken worden geschreven. De tekst zelf is eenvoudig en het bekende verhaal. Er wordt weinig nieuws vertelt in het boek. Gelukkig wordt wel de periode in Burr Oak genoemd. Af en toe staan er interessante zinnen in het boek of een goede uitleg. In de zijlijn van de tekst staan kleine wetenswaardigheidjes uitgelegd. Het verhaal is wel prettig geschreven. Op het eind bevat het boek een tijdslijn, en uitleg en opsomming voor moeilijk, nieuw te leren woorden (glossary) en enkele feiten.

Tekeningen:

Leuke foto van een oudere Laura op de voorkant. In het boek staan verder de bekende foto’s van Laura, Almanzo, hen samen en de drie zusjes. Verder zijn er wat pentekeningen van het pioniersleven. Een leuke foto is een foto van Rose tijdens haar reistijd en van laura’s bureautje waaraan ze de boeken schreef. Er is een foto van Rocky Ridge en van de tablet waarin Laura de boeken schreef. Een foto van Pa en Ma. Een foto van Pa en zijn viool. Een plaatje van een sprinkhaan en een plaatje van de verschillende plekken waar ze gewoond hebben. Een grote foto van Mary en een plaatje van De Smet en het landmetershuis. Een foto van het graf van de baby-zoon.

Eigen mening:

Geen geweldig boek, hoewel het er mooi uit ziet en het best prettig leest. Meest ergerlijk is dat er fouten in het boekje staan! Zo staat er dat Rose is geboren op 9 december (dat is 5 december) en bij een foto-onderschrift staat dat Laura voor het huis op Rocky Ridge staat, terwijl het het huis in Mansfield is. Ook wordt gezegd dat Ma 21 jaar oud is als ze trouwt, terwijl ze pas 20 jaar is. Slordige foutjes.

The book looks neat. There are 10 chapters in the book and 7 additions. Chapter 1 is a kind of introduction to “the book that a depression couldn't stop”. It is about the depression and how the initial development of Laura's books went. Chapter 2 is about life in the big forest. Chapter 3 on the Prairie. Chapter 4 about Plum Creek. Chapter 5 about hard times. Chapter 6 on the prairie homestead. Chapter 7 about growing up. Chapter 8 about joy and misery. Chapter 9 about Rocky Ridge and Chapter 10 about the books being written. The text itself is simple and the well-known story. Little new is said in the book. Happily, the period in Burr Oak is mentioned. Occasionally there are interesting sentences in the book or a good explanation. Small facts are explained on the sidelines of the text. The story is nicely written. At the end the book contains a timeline, an explanation and summary of difficult, new words to learn (glossary) and some facts.

Drawings:

Nice photo of an older Laura on the front. The book also contains the well-known photos of Laura, Almanzo, them together and the three sisters. There are also some pen drawings of pioneer life. A nice photo is a photo of Rose during her travel time and of Laura's desk where she wrote the books. There is a photo of Rocky Ridge and of the tablet in which Laura wrote the books. A photo of Ma and Pa. A photo of Pa and his violin. A picture of a grasshopper and a picture of the different places where they lived. A large photo of Mary and a picture of De Smet and the surveyor's house. A photo of the baby son's grave.

Own opinion:

Not a great book, although it looks nice and is quite enjoyable to read. What is most annoying is that there are errors in the booklet! For example, it says that Rose was born on December 9 (which is December 5) and a photo caption says that Laura is standing in front of the house on Rocky Ridge, while it is the house in Mansfield. It is also said that Ma will be 21 years old when she gets married, while she is only 20 years old. Careless mistakes.
