Het boek is
opgebouwd uit 8 hoofdstukken en gaat zeer diep in op de schrijftrant en hoe de
boeken zich met elkaar verbinden, de rode draad in de boeken, de ontwikkeling
van de personen in de boeken. Het wordt zeer diep beschreven. Het is echt een
informatief boek.
Er wordt een
duidelijk onderscheid gemaakt in de Laura die de boeken schrijft en de Laura in
de boeken. Er wordt heel duidelijk gemaakt dat dit twee verschillende personen
zijn. In hoofdstuk 1 wordt verteld over het werkelijke leven van Laura Ingalls
en wat ze heeft meegemaakt aan de frontier. Heel kort haar hele
levensverhaal. In hoofdstuk 2 wordt
gesproken over “familie Folklore”, waar onder andere het verhalen vertellen van
pa bij hoort. Binnen het gezin zijn de verhalen bekend, de gewenste reacties
horen er bij. Ook het viool spelen van pa en samen zingen is familie folklore.
En dit maakt dat een gezin bij elkaar hoort. Ook wordt in dit boek de
verhouding tussen Pa en Laura en Ma en Laura beschreven, en de zussen-relatie
van Mary en Laura. Wat is thuis? En waarom voel je als thuis. De beschrijvende
manier van Laura, waar je veel uit kunt halen over hoe ze zich voelt. Laura
tekent met woorden en dat is voor iedereen herkenbaar. Er wordt geschreven over
hoe Laura in eerste instantie tegen de prairie aankeek: groot, wijds en
gevaarlijk en hoe blij ze is met Pa’s aanwezigheid en veiligheid. Maar later
vertrouwt ze de prairie, al blijven de indianen voor een gevoel van
onveiligheid zorgen. Er wordt continu in het verhaal heen en weer geswitcht
tussen de verschillende boeken. Farmer Boy wordt apart behandeld, omdat dat zo
expliciet over Almanzo gaat. Maar ook daarin zit duidelijk een rode draad, nl
groter worden/ willen zijn. En er wordt in beschreven dat je fouten (mag) maakt
als je opgroeit. Het is herkenbaar.
Ook wordt
hier benoemd dat Laura echt de boeken schreef en Rose haar leerde hoe dat moest
met plot en thema en rode draad ed. En gaandeweg de boeken is dit ontwikkelt.
De boeken zijn veel doordachter geschreven, volgens deze schrijver, dan als je
ze zomaar leest. Ze zijn tijdloos door het thema, wat overal ter wereld
herkenbaar is: namelijk: een kind dat opgroeit. Verder wordt de ontwikkeling
van de verschillende hoofdpersonen beschreven. Waarbij Pa duidelijk de veilige
man is, maar wel 1 die fouten maakt en soms domme dingen doet. Ma is zacht en
gentle, altijd bezig met het opvoeden van de kinderen, lacht weinig, behoedt de
kinderen voor ijdelheid of verwaandheid, is lerares. Mary wordt benoemd, met
haar blindheid, die wel haar karakter toont in hoe ze daar mee om gaat. Carrie
en Grace zijn wat onderbelicht, maar dat zijn ze in de boeken ook.
Uiteindelijk
volgt een conclusie.

Er staan geen tekeningen in
het boek. Alleen bij de aanhef staat de foto van Laura Ingalls Wilder die ook
op de kaft staat.
Eigen mening:
Boek gekocht in 2021 en mee
laten komen in het pakket van Susan Duggan. Het boek is een oud bibliotheekboek
en ik heb het wel wat netter gemaakt toen het er eenmaal was.
Het is boek is zeer
informatief, geschreven door een reviewer van kinderboeken, die ook nog eens
professor is in kinderboeken, dus iemand die het zeer theoretisch benaderd. Wel
goed geschreven, maar soms een beetje taai. Een nieuwe kijk op de laura-boeken,
die helemaal worden uitgeplozen.

The book consists of 8
chapters and goes into great detail about the writing style and how the books
connect with each other, the common thread in the books, the development of the
people in the books. It is described very deeply. It is a really informative
book.
A clear distinction is made
between the Laura who writes the books and the Laura in the books. It is made
very clear that these are two different persons. Chapter 1 tells about the real
life of Laura Ingalls and what she experienced on the frontier. Very briefly
her entire life story. Chapter 2 talks about “family folklore”, which includes Pa's
storytelling. The stories are known within the family, the desired reactions
are part of it. Pa playing the violin and singing together is also family
folklore. And this makes a family belong together. This book also describes the
relationship between Pa and Laura and Ma and Laura, and the sister relationship
of Mary and Laura. What is home? And why do you feel like home. Laura's
descriptive way, from which you can learn a lot about how she feels. Laura
draws with words and that is recognizable to everyone. It is written about how
Laura initially viewed the prairie: big, wide and dangerous and how happy she
is with Pa's presence and safety. But later she trusts the prairie, even though
the Indians continue to create a feeling of insecurity. The story continuously
switches back and forth between the different books. Farmer Boy is treated
separately because it is so explicitly about Almanzo. But there is also a clear
common thread, namely growing/wanting to be bigger. And it describes that you
(are allowed to) make mistakes when you grow up. It is recognizable.
It is also mentioned here that
Laura really wrote the books and Rose taught her how to do that with plot and
theme and common thread, etc. And this developed gradually as the books were
written. The books are written much more thoughtfully, according to this
writer, than if you just read them. They are timeless because of the theme,
which is recognizable all over the world: namely: a child growing up.
Furthermore, the development of the various main characters is described. Where
Pa is clearly the safe man, but one who makes mistakes and sometimes does
stupid things. Ma is soft and gentle, always busy raising the children, laughs
little, protects the children from vanity or conceit, is a teacher. Mary is
mentioned, with her blindness, which shows her character in how she deals with
it. Carrie and Grace are a bit underexposed, as they are in the books.
Ultimately a conclusion
follows.

There are no drawings in the
book. Only the salutation contains the photo of Laura Ingalls Wilder, which is
also on the cover.
Own opinion:
Bought this book in 2021 and
included it in Susan Duggan's package. The book is an old library book and I
did tidy it up a bit once it arrived.
The book is very informative,
written by a reviewer of children's books, who is also a professor of
children's books, so someone who approaches it very theoretically. Well
written, but sometimes a bit tough. A new look at the Laura books, which are
completely explored.
