Dit boek bestaat uit artikelen die Laura Ingalls Wilder heeft geschreven voor een tijdschrift. Het zijn verschillende verzamelde artikelen die gaan over verschillende onderwerpen, zoals '" het boerenleven in de Ozarks", "de pioneer spirit", "de weg naar vooruitgang", "veranderende tijden voor vrouwen", "de waarde van hard werk" en "de dingen die er toe doen". Laura heeft over ieder onderwerp verschillende artikelen geschreven door de tijd heen en deze zijn geplaatst. Mijn favoriete artikel van Laura is het artikel over de lange winter. Dat staat ook in dit boekje. Hierin staat dat onderzoekers hebben ontdekt dat je van tarwekorrels met een koffiemolen graan kunt malen om zo een brood te bakken. Laura concludeert dat ze daar geen onderzoek naar hadden hoeven doen, omdat de inwoners van De Smet dit tijdens de lange winter proefondervindelijk ook al hadden ontdekt. Verder is er een artikel over de aanleg van de open haard met materialen van Rocky Ridge en dat Laura drie hele grote stenen wilde gebruiken en Almanzo dit niet zag zitten, tot Laura gaat huilen en dat werkt uiteindelijk. En het artikel over dat Laura als kind achter de koeien aan ging en dat ze dat zo leuk vond.

Het boek bestaat uit 6 hoofdstukken. Elk hoofdstuk behandeld 3 tot 5 artikelen.

Tekeningen:

Er staan maar een paar foto's in dit boek. De mooiste foto's zijn van Almanzo op een ezel op Rocky Ridge en Almanzo bij een mooie appelboom in de boomgaard. De andere foto's zijn portretfoto's van Laura en van het interieur van de keuken en kamer op Rocky Ridge.

Eigen mening:

Het zijn wel interessante artikelen, maar er zijn meer boeken met artikelen van Laura. Dit boek is niet perse een grote aanvulling op de bibliotheek.

This book consists of articles that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote for a magazine. They are several collected articles that cover various topics, such as 'farming life in the Ozarks', 'the pioneer spirit', 'the road to progress', 'changing times for women', 'the value of hard work' and ' the things that matter." Laura has written several articles on each topic over time and these have been posted. My favorite article by Laura is the article about the long winter. That is also stated in this booklet. It states that researchers have discovered that you can grind wheat grains with a coffee grinder to bake bread. Laura concludes that they did not need to investigate this, because the residents of De Smet had already discovered this experimentally during the long winter. There is also an article about the construction of the fireplace with materials from Rocky Ridge and that Laura wanted to use three very large stones and Almanzo did not like this, until Laura starts crying and that eventually works. And the article about how Laura chased cows as a child and how much she enjoyed it.

The book consists of 6 chapters. Each chapter covers 3 to 5 articles.

Drawings:

There are only a few photos in this book. The most beautiful photos are of Almanzo on a donkey on Rocky Ridge and Almanzo near a beautiful apple tree in the orchard. The other photos are portrait photos of Laura and of the interior of the kitchen and room at Rocky Ridge.

Own opinion:

These are interesting articles, but there are more books with articles by Laura. This book is not necessarily a major addition to the library.
