Samenvatting:

Een kinderboekje voor de kinderen die al iets beter kunnen lezen. Het hele verhaal van Laura van het begin tot het eind wordt snel verteld. Tussendoor staan wel “interessante feiten” zoals een (korte) uitleg hoe een dugout werd gemaakt en altijd een zandvloer had en waar de naam DeSmet vandaan komt. Prettig is dat afstanden ook worden aangegeven in kilometers. Op het eind staat een woordenlijst waarin een keer echt moeilijke woorden worden uitgelegd zoals “drayman” en “frontier” en “pioneer”. Het is nog een vrij nieuw boek en er wordt ook verwezen naar websites.

Het boek bevat 4 “echte” hoofdstukken en 4 aanvullingen zoals de tijdlijn, uitleg van woorden, meer informatie en de index. Ook staan er nog enkele bladzijde met uitgebreide informatie in, zoals over sneeuwstormen, over de periode in Burr Oak en over de boeken.

Tekeningen:

Er staan bekende foto’s in van de 3 meisjes, Charles en Caroline Ingalls, en een foto van Carrie en Mary. Verder een foto van het landmetershuis en Almanzo. Een foto van Laura toen ze 17 jaar was en de trouwfoto van Laura en Almanzo. De kinderfoto van Rose,helaas staat bij de foto van Rose ook dat ze 4 jaar is en niet 2 jaar en 4 maanden. Een foto van de oude Laura bij haar boeken en Laura op 25-jarige leeftijd. Er staat een voor mij nieuwe foto in van Rose als volwassene. En natuurlijk een foto van het huis in Mansfield.

Ook staan er algemene plaatjes in van een dugout, een rails in de sneeuw, landmeters bij een tent, een huifkar in een sneeuwstorm en een groot huis in de sneeuw. Een klassenfoto van laat 1800 en een foto van een door hagel beschadigde oogst. Een foto van houten gebouw in de Ozarks.

Eigen mening:

Vrij nieuw, nog netjes boekje. Qua tekst en foto’s niet echt heel interessant. Wel geinig.

A children's book for children who can read a little better. Laura's entire story from beginning to end is told quickly. In between there are "interesting facts" such as a (short) explanation of how a dugout was made and always had a sand floor and where the name DeSmet comes from. It is nice that distances are also indicated in kilometers. At the end there is a glossary in which really difficult words are explained such as “drayman” and “frontier” and “pioneer”. It is still a fairly new book and there are also references to websites.

The book contains 4 “real” chapters and 4 additions such as the timeline, explanation of words, more information and the index. There are also a few pages with extensive information, such as about blizzards, about the period in Burr Oak and about the books.

Drawings:

It contains famous photos of the 3 girls, Charles and Caroline Ingalls, and a photo of Carrie and Mary. Furthermore, a photo of the surveyor's house and Almanzo. A photo of Laura when she was 17 years old and the wedding photo of Laura and Almanzo. The childhood photo of Rose, unfortunately the photo of Rose also states that she is 4 years old and not 2 years and 4 months. A photo of old Laura with her books and Laura at the age of 25. It contains a new-to-me photo of Rose as an adult. And of course a photo of the house in Mansfield.

It also contains general pictures of a dugout, a track in the snow, surveyors near a tent, a covered wagon in a snowstorm and a large house in the snow. A class photo from the late 1800s and a photo of a crop damaged by hail. A photo of a wooden building in the Ozarks.

Own opinion:

Fairly new, still neat booklet. Not very interesting in terms of text and photos. Pretty cool.
