Samenvatting:

Een eenvoudig, dun boekje voor net iets meer dan de beginnende lezer.

Het begint heel verrassend met de treinreis naar South Dakota en Laura die begint met de wereld te beschrijven voor Mary. Hiermee oefende ze het beschrijven met woorden, zodat ze op 63-jarige leeftijd de wereld haar jeugd goed kon beschrijven. Hierna wordt wel vluchtig het verhaal van Laura vertelt. Ook staat er het verhaal in dat Almanzo werd uitgedaagd om een meisje te vragen naar huis te begeleiden. Hij vroeg Laura omdat hij dacht dat zij bedoeld was, maar later bleek dat eigenlijk iemand anders bedoeld was. Tevens staat vermeld dat Almanzo eigenlijk helemaal niet Rocky Ridge wilde kopen, maar dat Laura er op stond, omdat zij de potentie van het land zag. Hierna wordt nog vlug ingegaan op Laura’s schrijverscarriere. Het boekje bevat 17 hoofdstukken, die allemaal kort zijn.

Tekeningen:

Er staan vrijwel geen nieuwe foto’s in dit boek. Ze zijn allemaal bekend. Er staat een algemene tekening in van een spoorlijn, indianen en huifkarren. Een algemene tekening van een blokhut in het bos. Een algemene foto van een lerares voor een one-room schoolhouse met een groep kinderen ervoor. De huwelijksfoto van Laura en Almanzo (ingezoomd). Een algemene foto van een huikarren-rij. Een foto van Laura op 17-jarige leeftijd en Laura op 50-jarige leeftijd.

Eigen mening:

Dun boekje, kinderboek met matige informatie. Geen must-have. Maar ook wel weer interessant zoals het is opgeschreven. Goed leesbaar.

Resume:

A simple, thin book for just a little more than the novice reader.

It starts very surprisingly with the train journey to South Dakota and Laura starting to describe the world to Mary. With this she practiced describing with words, so that at the age of 63, she could properly describe her youth to the world. After this, Laura's story is briefly told. It also tells the story that Almanzo was challenged to ask a girl to accompany her home. He asked Laura because he thought she was meant, but later it turned out that actually someone else was meant. It is also stated that Almanzo did not actually want to buy Rocky Ridge at all, but that Laura insisted because she saw the potential of the land. After this, Laura's writing career is briefly discussed. The booklet contains 17 chapters, all of which are short.

There are virtually no new photos in this book. They are all known. It contains a general drawing of a railroad, Indians and covered wagons. A general drawing of a log cabin in the woods. A general photo of a teacher in front of a one-room schoolhouse with a group of children in front of it. Laura and Almanzo's wedding photo (zoomed in). A general photo of a row of covered wagons. A photo of Laura at the age of 17 and Laura at the age of 50.

Own opinion:

Thin book, children's book with information. Not a must have. But it is also interesting the way it is written. Well readable.
