Samenvatting:

Een boekje dat er mooi uitziet van buiten, maar niet heel veel inhoud heeft. Het volgt het begin van Laura’s verhalen, waarbij dus eerst naar het indianengebied wordt gegaan en daarna naar Walnut Grove. Wel wordt er gesproken over het jaar in Burr Oak en dat het gezin heel arm is en van de verschillende ziekten die de familie overkomen.

Het boekje heeft 12 hoofdstukken en 5 toevoegingen. Het boekje is verhalend geschreven en met dialogen. Er zijn veel kleine incidenten beschreven in het boekje, zoals dat Laura met Mary samen naar school gaat in Pepin. Er wordt verhaald over de geboorte van Freddie. In het stuk over Burr Oak wordt vertelt over dat Laura, Mary en Carrie naar school gingen en dat Laura moeite had met de vermenigvuldigingstafels uit haar hoofd te leren. En, toen ze boven de winkel woonden, Mary en Laura reciteerden en dat de bezoekers in de winkel daar naar luisterden. Ook gaat het verhaal over dat Mary erg ziek is door meningitis en blind wordt. Ook gaat het verhaal over Almanzo die geduldig Laura’s liefde wint. Vervolgens komen de eerste vier prairiejaren aan bod, met de geboorte van Rose, de difterie en periode daarna. Almanzo en Laura overwogen emigratie naar Nieuw-Zeeland, maar komt uit in Mansfield, Missouri. Daarna vertelt het boek over de ontwikkeling van Rose, maar ook over dat Almanzo en Laura Rocky Ridge opbouwen en het huis bouwen. Uiteindelijk ook over dat Laura gaat schrijven. Eigenlijk wordt wel het hele verhaal beschreven. Dat Laura terug reist naar De Smet voor de begrafenis van Pa en niet voor die van Ma. Dat Carrie op bezoek komt in Mansfield. En dan uiteindelijk gaat het boek over het schrijven van de Kleine Huis- boeken. Daarna gaat het verhaal over de laatste jaren van Laura op Rocky Ridge en eindigt bij haar overlijden. Waarna nog meer wordt vertelt over Rose voor het boek eindigt.

Tekeningen:

Er staan verschillende foto’s in het boek. Enkele zijn nieuw zoals Laura en Almanzo in de tuin van Rocky Ridge met een hond 2x. Foto’s van Laura en Rose op reis door Amerika. En enkele overzichtsfoto’s van Mansfield, een trein, een indianendorp, een man die een span ossen over een akker begeleid en ploegt, een foto van Walnut Grove Creamery, een foto van de kerk in Walnut Grove en een foto van de hoofdstraat in De Smet, een foto van een gezin op de prairie, een foto van Mansfield en de natuur rondom Mansfield,  De tekeningen zijn vooral plaatjes van Garth Williams. Er is een tekening van Marcy Dunn Ramsey. En verder familiefoto’s van Grace, de drie zusjes, Laura, Mary, Almanzo, trouwfoto Laura en Almanzo, Rose, de familie-foto van de familie Ingalls.

Eigen mening:

De tekst verder is eenvoudig, weinig nieuws. Af en toe is er een leuk zinnetje of een alinea met wat nieuws. Het leest wel prettig. Helaas staan er ook foutjes in het boek.

Resume:

A book that looks nice from the outside, but doesn't have much content. It follows the beginning of Laura's stories, first going to the Indian Territory and then to Walnut Grove. There is talk about the year in Burr Oak and that the family is very poor and the various diseases that happen to the family.

The booklet has 12 chapters and 5 additions. The book is written narratively and with dialogues. There are many small incidents described in the book, such as Laura going to school together with Mary in Pepin. It tells the story of Freddie's birth. The piece about Burr Oak talks about Laura, Mary and Carrie going to school and Laura having trouble memorizing the multiplication tables. And, when they lived above the shop, Mary and Laura would recite and the visitors in the shop would listen to it. The story also talks about Mary being very ill with meningitis and going blind. The story is also about Almanzo who patiently wins Laura's love. The first four prairie years are then discussed, with the birth of Rose, the diphtheria and the period afterwards. Almanzo and Laura considered emigrating to New Zealand, but ended up in Mansfield, Missouri. The book then tells about Rose's development, but also about Almanzo and Laura building Rocky Ridge and building the house. Ultimately also about Laura going to write. Actually the whole story is described. That Laura travels back to De Smet for Pa's funeral and not for Ma's. That Carrie is coming to visit Mansfield. And then finally the book is about writing the Little House books. The story then focuses on Laura's last years on Rocky Ridge and ends with her death. After which more is told about Rose before the book ends.

Drawings:

There are several photos in the book. Some are new, such as Laura and Almanzo in the garden of Rocky Ridge with a dog twice. Photos of Laura and Rose traveling through America. And some overview photos of Mansfield, a train, an Indian village, a man guiding and plowing a team of oxen across a field, a photo of Walnut Grove Creamery, a photo of the church in Walnut Grove and a photo of the main street in De Smet, a photo of a family on the prairie, a photo of Mansfield and the nature around Mansfield, The drawings are mainly pictures by Garth Williams. There is a drawing by Marcy Dunn Ramsey. And further family photos of Grace, the three sisters, Laura, Mary, Almanzo, wedding photo of Laura and Almanzo, Rose, the family photo of the Ingalls family.

Own opinion:

The rest of the text is simple, not much new. Every now and then there is a nice sentence or paragraph with something new. It is a pleasant read. Unfortunately, there are also errors in the book.
