Een boekje wat erg leesbaar is geschreven. Leest makkelijk door. Het gaat eerst over Almanzo en hoe hij opgroeit op de boerderij en zich ontwikkelt en graag boer wil worden Hoe hij betrouwbaar wordt en vrolijk.

Daarna gaat het verhaal over Laura en hoe zij opgroeit in verschillende plaatsen. Hoe ze uiteindelijk ogen wordt voor Mary en de wereld leert beschrijven.

Daarna gaat het over hoe Almanzo en Laura samen komen. Wanneer Laura Almanzo voor het eerst ziet, hoe Almanzo Laura in de slee naar huis brengt, hoe ze daarna samen in de buggy rijden en hoe langzaamaan Laura verliefd raakt op Almanzo en niet alleen op de paarden. Hoe ze uiteindelijk trouwen en hun leven samen beginnen. En hoe zwaar de eerste jaren zijn. Vervolgens hoe ze zwerven door Amerika om een plaats te vinden waar ze allebei gelukkig kunnen worden, niet in Florida, niet in De Smet en ze vinden hun plek in Mansfield, met het beste klimaat. Hoe ze samen Rocky Ridge opbouwen, ieder aan een kant van de zaag en samen partners zijn. Uiteindelijk hoe Laura haar boeken schrijft en ze samen herinneringen ophalen. Uiteindelijk vertelt het boek over het overlijden van Almanzo en hoe Laura hem niet kan laten gaan, na een huwelijk van 64 jaar……..

Tussendoor staan veel teksten uit andere boeken of van Laura’s artikelen waarin verwezen wordt naar bepaalde denkwijze van Laura of hoe andere mensen hun liefde zagen.

Eigen mening:

Wel een leuk boekje. Gekocht en gekregen in 2020. Ik had het als E-book, maar wilde toch het echte boek hebben. Het leest wel lekker, maar is allemaal ook wel “gejat” en veel herhaling en aannames. Wel leuk om een keer te lezen.

In de boeken van Dan worden heel veel teksten “hergebruikt” uit andere boeken van Dan White en ook wordt veel gebruik gemaakt van (steeds dezelfde) artikelen die door Laura zijn geschreven.

In principe staat er niet echt iets nieuws in het boek, maar het wordt wel mooi vertelt. Veel van wat er wordt geschreven zijn ook aannames en niet echt ergens op gebaseerd. Niettemin leest het wel prettig. Het is wel een mooie verzameling van informatie die al lang bekend is, maar het is leuk bij elkaar gezet.

A book that is very readable. Reads easily. It is first about Almanzo and how he grows up on the farm and develops and wants to become a farmer. How he becomes reliable and cheerful.

Then the story is about Laura and how she grows up in different places. How she eventually becomes eyes for Mary and learns to describe the world.

Then it's about how Almanzo and Laura come together. When Laura sees Almanzo for the first time, how Almanzo brings Laura home in the sleigh, how they then ride together in the buggy and how Laura slowly falls in love with Almanzo and not just with the horses. How they eventually get married and start their life together. And how tough the first years are. Then how they wander through America to find a place where they can both be happy, not in Florida, not in De Smet and they find their place in Mansfield, with the best climate. How they build Rocky Ridge together, each on one side of the saw and being partners together. Ultimately how Laura writes her books and they reminisce together. Ultimately, the book tells about Almanzo's death and how Laura cannot let him go, after 64 years of marriage...

In between there are many texts from other books or from Laura's articles that refer to certain ways of thinking of Laura or how other people saw their love.

Own opinion:

Quite a nice book. Bought and received in 2020. I had it as an E-book, but still wanted the real book. It's a nice read, but it's all stolen and there's a lot of repetition and assumptions. Nice to read once.

In Dan's books, many texts are "reused" from other books by Dan White and extensive use is also made of (always the same) articles written by Laura.

In principle there is nothing new in the book, but it is nicely told. Much of what is written is also assumptions and not really based on anything. Nevertheless, it is a pleasant read. It is a nice collection of information that has been known for a long time, but it is nicely put together.

Het is een gezin dat deed aan homeschooling en gezamenlijk een liefde voor Laura Ingalls heeft opgebouwd. Over elke locatie wordt een stukje vertelt en ook wel wat er te zien is. Alle bekende sites komen aan bod, maar ook South Troy, Westville, Vinton en Keystone. Er worden per locatie belangrijke plaatsen genoemd. Bij veel dingen wordt ook verwezen naar websites en ook heeft de familie filmpjes gemaakt, welke op internet beschikbaar zijn. Er staan 13 sites benoemd in het boek.

Tekeningen:

Het zijn allemaal foto’s. Sommige zijn bekende foto’s van de Herbert Hoover Library, maar de meeste zijn van het gezin zelf en ze staan er ook zelf op. De foto’s zijn scherp en mooi en soms vernieuwend. Er staat een foto in van huis in Pepin en van de binnen- en buitenkant van de gereconstrueerde blokhut in Kansas, maar ook een foto van het bord op de Ingalls Homestead in Chariton County. Meerdere foto’s van Walnut Grove, zoals de kerkklok en het museum. Een fotootje van South Troy begraafplaats en natuurlijk foto’s van het hotel in Burr Oak. Een foto van de kerk in De Smet, maar ook van Pa’s huis en het landmetershuis. En natuurlijk van de steen op de homestead. Een foto van de kerk in Spring Valley en van de kerk in Westville. Foto’s van Mansfield ontbreken zeker niet. De foto’s zijn vooral van buitenaanzicht van huizen en kerken. Het boek eindigt met Malone en Vinton en Key Stone.

Eigen mening:

Het is eigenlijk een mooi, dun, informatief boekje. Het is op een heel leesbare manier samengesteld. De christelijkheid, maar ook de liefde voor LIW spat er best vanaf. En toch heeft het vernieuwing en informatie in zich. Het is een mooi boekje. De foto’s zijn mooi.

Duidelijk en informatief en vrij recent.

Resume:

A small book by a family who jointly visited all of Laura Ingalls Wilder's museum sites. They are a family that are homeschooled and built a shared love for Laura Ingalls. A bit is said about each location and also what there is to see. All well-known sites are covered, as well as South Troy, Westville, Vinton and Keystone. Important places are mentioned per location. Many things also refer to websites and the family has also made videos, which are available on the internet. There are 13 sites mentioned in the book.

Drawings:

There are many photos. Some are well-known photos from the Herbert Hoover Library, but most are of the family itself and they are included. The photos are sharp and beautiful and sometimes innovative. It includes a photo of the house in Pepin and the interior and exterior of the reconstructed log cabin in Kansas, as well as a photo of the sign at the Ingalls Homestead in Chariton County. Several photos of Walnut Grove, such as the church bell and the museum. A photo of South Troy cemetery and of course photos of the hotel in Burr Oak. A photo of the church in De Smet, but also of Pa's house and the surveyor's house. And of course the stone on the homestead. A photo of the church in Spring Valley and the church in Westville. Photos of Mansfield are certainly not lacking. The photos are mainly of exterior views of houses and churches. The book ends with Malone and Vinton and Key Stone.

Own opinion:

It's actually a nice, thin, informative book. It is put together in a very readable way. The Christianity, but also the love for LIW, really shines through. And yet it contains innovation and information. It is a beautiful book. The photos are beautiful.

Een prachtig boek van William Anderson. Goede tekst en heel veel foto’s en documenten.

De tekst is eenvoudig, maar is het hele verhaal over de familie Ingalls. Tevens worden ook de grootouders besproken. De tekst is eenvoudig en prettig te lezen, hij is erg chronologisch en compleet.

Er staat een foutje in het boek; dat Laura 15 jaar was toen ze begon met lesgeven, terwijl op het officiële certificaat de datum 1883 staat en toen was Laura 16 jaar.

Het boek bevat 12 hoofdstukken, ingedeeld in jaren en begint tussen 1850-1860 en eindigt van 1950-1957.

De tekst volgt het bekende verhaal en gaat uitgebreid in op de bekende situaties uit de boeken en het leven daarna als Laura begint met schrijven.

Het verhaal is prettig geschreven.

Tekeningen:

De foto’s zijn zeer mooi en duidelijk. Foto’s van teksten en briefjes zijn goed te lezen en in originele handschriften. Er zitten een paar heel bijzondere foto’s tussen.  Onbekende foto’s van Laura op verschillende leeftijden, een mooie foto van de bouw van het huis op Rocky Ridge, met de bovenverandaramen er op.  En nog wat oude foto’s van Rocky Ridge. Ook foto’s van Rose en Almanzo. Alle foto’s zijn scherp. Foto’s zijn in kleur en in zwart-wit. Ook zitten er veel “plaatjes” in de boeken, zoals tekeningen van Garth Williams en Helen sewell, maar ook van de kaften van de boeken, telegrammen en brieven van Laura en aan Laura. De meeste foto’s zijn wel bekend, maar de duidelijkheid van de foto’s maakt het boek waardevol. En alle aanvullende informatie die in het boek is gezet.

Eigen mening:

Prachtig boek!!! Mooie, duidelijke, nieuwe foto’s, informatieve teksten, prettig lezen. Een echte aanrader. Erg mooi.

Erg mooi, een ware aanvulling op een grote verzameling.

A beautiful book by William Anderson. Good text and lots of photos and documents.

The text is simple, but is the whole story about the Ingalls family. The grandparents are also discussed. The text is simple and pleasant to read, it is very chronological and complete.

There is an error in the book; that Laura was 15 years old when she started teaching, while on the official certificate the date is 1883 and Laura was 16 years old at that time.

The book contains 12 chapters, divided into years and starts between 1850-1860 and ends from 1950-1957.

The text follows the well-known story and discusses in detail the well-known situations from the books and life afterwards when Laura starts writing.

The story is nicely written.

Drawings:

The photos are very beautiful and clear. Photos of texts and notes are easy to read and in original handwriting. There are some very special photos. Unknown photos of Laura at different ages, a beautiful photo of the construction of the house on Rocky Ridge, showing the upper porch windows. And some old photos of Rocky Ridge. Also photos of Rose and Almanzo. All photos are sharp. Photos are in color and black and white. There are also many “pictures” in the books, such as drawings by Garth Williams and Helen Sewell, but also of the covers of the books, telegrams and letters from Laura and to Laura. Most of the photos are known, but the clarity of the photos makes the book valuable. And all the additional information put into the book.

Own opinion:

Beautiful book!!! Beautiful, clear, new photos, informative texts, pleasant reading. Highly recommended. Very nice.

Een simpel dun boekje over het leven van Laura in Mansfield. Het boekje begint met een korte samenvatting van Laura's leven voor ze naar Mansfield kwam. Dan volgt een klein stukje over de reis naar Mansfield en hoe Laura al meteen gecharmeerd was van de Ozarks. Hoe Laura en Almanzo probeerden om in de loop der jaren Rocky Ridge op te bouwen. Ze woonden een tijdje in de stad en de vader van Almanzo kocht het huis waarin ze woonden. Samen bouwden Almanzo en Laura hun droomhuis op Rocky Ridge. Elke keer weer bouwden ze er wat kamers bij als ze daar tijd en materiaal voor hadden. Laura hield kippen en zorgde er zo goed voor dat ze altijd meer eieren en gezondere kippen had dan wie dan ook in de omgeving. Laura werd gevraagd om voor gezelschappen over haar kippenhouderij te komen praten. Toen ze een keer niet kon, zond ze haar speech op papier, zodat deze kon worden voorgelezen. Een editor in het publiek waardeerde de schrijfwijze en nodigde Laura uit om voor verschillende bladen te schrijven. Verder was Laura lid van verschillende clubs in Mansfield. Almanzo en Laura gingen samen naar feestjes en dancings. uiteindelijk begon Laura te schrijven over haar leven. Met Rose' hulp werden de manuscripten veranderd in kinderboeken die erg bekend werden. Na het uitkomen van de boeken kreeg Laura veel post van kinderen. In het boekje staan een groot aantal brieven van klassen en kinderen vermeld. Laura schreef bijna iedereen een kort briefje terug en ook deze staan vermeld. Nog later werden er bibliotheken naar Laura vernoemd en ontving ze prijzen. Laura was inmiddels te oud om overal naar toe te reizen. Op hoge leeftijd was ze vaak alleen thuis en las veel. Verder hield ze van handwerken. Rose kwam regelmatig langs en Laura ontwikkelde suikerziekte. In 1956 bleek Laura erg ziek toen Rose kwam en Laura moest naar het ziekenhuis. Ze was op tijd weer gezond om terug te keren naar haar geliefde Rocky Ridge waar ze 3 dagen na haar 90ste verjaardag overleed.

Er staan een paar foto's in het boekje. Een van Laura in 1919 en Laura op 65-jarige leeftijd. Een foto van Rose en een foto van een oude Almanzo. Natuurlijk een foto van Rocky Ridge huis en een foto uit 1949 van Laura in haar bibliotheek. Dan zijn er nog een foto van Laura bij een kastje met boeken en dat ze aan het signeren is.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi, dun boekje door William Anderson. Dus gevuld met informatie en mooie foto’s. Interessant om te lezen. De foto’s zijn zwart-wit kopieën en daarom helaas niet heel duidelijk.

A simple small book about Laura's life in Mansfield. The booklet begins with a brief summary of Laura's life before she came to Mansfield. Then follows a little bit about the trip to Mansfield and how Laura was immediately charmed by the Ozarks. How Laura and Almanzo tried to build Rocky Ridge over the years. They lived in town for a while and Almanzo's father bought the house they lived in. Together, Almanzo and Laura built their dream home on Rocky Ridge. Each time they built some more rooms if they had the time and materials for it. Laura kept chickens and took such good care of them that she always had more eggs and healthier chickens than anyone else in the area. Laura was asked to talk to groups about her chicken farming. One time when she couldn't make it, she sent her speech on paper so it could be read. An editor in the audience appreciated the writing and invited Laura to write for various magazines. Laura was also a member of several clubs in Mansfield. Almanzo and Laura went to parties and dances together. Eventually Laura started writing about her life. With Rose's help, the manuscripts were turned into children's books that became well known. After the books came out, Laura received a lot of mail from children. The booklet contains a large number of letters from classes and children. Laura wrote back a short note to almost everyone and these are also listed. Later still, libraries were named after Laura and she received awards. Laura was now to old to travel anywhere. In her old age she was often home alone and read a lot. She also loved needlework. Rose visited regularly and Laura developed diabetes. In 1956 Laura turned out to be very ill when Rose arrived and Laura had to go to hospital. She was healthy again in time to return to her beloved Rocky Ridge where she passed away 3 days after her 90th birthday.

Drawings:

There are a few photos in the booklet. One of Laura in 1919 and Laura at the age of 65. A photo of Rose and a photo of old Almanzo. Of course, a photo of Rocky Ridge house and a 1949 photo of Laura in her library. Then there is a photo of Laura at a cupboard with books and that she is signing.

Own opinion:

A nice, slim book by William Anderson. So filled with information and beautiful photos. Interesting to read. The photos are black and white copies and therefore unfortunately not very clear.

Een vrij nieuw boek geschreven door William Anderson. Over de tijd van de familie Ingalls in Walnut Grove. Het is meestal bekende tekst, maar ook wel weer prettig geschreven.

In het boek wordt ook ingegaan op bezoekers van het museum, op de televisieserie en de spelers daarin. Er wordt ingegaan op brieven die ooit zijn geschreven aan Laura en aan de tijd dat de familie in Walnut Grove woonde. Er is achtergrond-informatie over de tijd dat de Ingallses er woonden, maar er wordt ook ingegaan op het bezoek van Garth Williams toen hij de boeken tekende en het schrijven van de boeken, met correspondentie tussen Rose en Laura.

Dit boekje gaat geheel en al over Walnut Grove en de links met Laura Ingalls Wilder. Het begint met een uitgebreid stuk over de speech die Laura in Detroit heeft gehouden en vertelt verder over de ontwikkeling van Walnut Grove als bekende plaats. De familie Gordon die gaandeweg zijn grond heeft opengesteld voor bezoekers aan Plum Creek. Het ontwikkelen van het museum en wat daar allemaal staat. Er wordt in het laatste hoofdstuk ook veel aandacht besteedt aan de TV-serie en de mensen daarvan die Walnut Grove bezoeken. Er staan ook verschillende interviews in met mensen uit de TV serie over hun ervaringen of mensen die iets moois gemaakt hebben wat met Laura te maken heeft. Er wordt ingegaan op de sprinkhanenplaag die Walnut Grove heeft geteisterd en over de ontwikkeling van de stad. Ook staat er extra informatie in over Nellie Owens. Ook staat er een stukje in het boek over de periode dat de familie bij Oom Peter inwoonde en dan ook over Freddie.

Tekeningen:

Er staan veel mooie, scherpe foto’s in het boek en enkele bekende tekeningen van Garth Williams of Helen Sewell. Ook foto’s van Helen Sewell, Mildred Boyle en Garth Williams.

In het boekje staan veel foto's. Er staan foto's in van items van Laura en haar familie die niet zo bekend zijn, zoals Laura's naaimandje, quilts, de Fifth Reader van Mary.

Ook staan er foto’s in van de drie meisjes die samen Nellie Oleson vormen en van de familie Nelson en Moses en de familie Masters.

Natuurlijk staan er bekende foto’s in het boek van Laura, Almanzo en de familie Ingalls, ook van Pa en Ma. Ook Plum Creek staat op de foto. Er is een duidelijke copie van het eerste handgeschreven hoofdstuk van het boek en een brief van Laura aan Rose. Zo zijn ook de getekende plattegrondjes van Laura duidelijk geplaatst en er is een grote plattegrond van Walnut Grove in 1874/1879. Er is een niet zo bekende foto van Rose en natuurlijk foto’s van Rocky Ridge Farm.

Foto’s van Walnut Grove zelf, zoals van de kerk. En heel veel foto’s van de spelers uit de TV-serie.

Eigen mening:

Het is een mooi boek, mooie foto’s, mooi verhaal. Het verhaal is zo geschreven dat het prettig is om te lezen. De informatie is duidelijk bij elkaar gezet en er staan toch weer onbekende foto’s in, waar William Anderson toegang tot weet te krijgen.

A fairly new book written by William Anderson. About the Ingalls family's time in Walnut Grove. It is usually well-known text, but also pleasantly written.

The book also discusses visitors to the museum, the television series and the players in it. It discusses letters once written to Laura and the time the family lived in Walnut Grove. There is background information about the time the Ingallses lived there, but it also discusses Garth Williams' visit when he draws the books and the writing of the books, with correspondence between Rose and Laura.

This booklet is all about Walnut Grove and its links to Laura Ingalls Wilder. It starts with an extensive piece about the speech Laura gave in Detroit and continues about the development of Walnut Grove as a famous place. The Gordon family who gradually opened their land to visitors to Plum Creek. Developing the museum and what is there. The final chapter also focuses on the TV series and the people who visit Walnut Grove. There are also several interviews with people from the TV series about their experiences or people who have created something beautiful that has to do with Laura. It discusses the locust plague that has ravaged Walnut Grove and the development of the city. It also contains additional information about Nellie Owens. There is also a piece in the book about the period when the family lived with Uncle Peter and also about Freddie.

Drawings:

There are many beautiful, sharp photos in the book and some well-known drawings by Garth Williams or Helen Sewell. Also photos by Helen Sewell, Mildred Boyle and Garth Williams.

The booklet contains many photos. It contains photos of items belonging to Laura and her family that are not well known, such as Laura's sewing basket, quilts, Mary's Fifth Reader.

It also contains photos of the three girls who make up Nellie Oleson and of the Nelsons and Moses families and the Masters family.

Of course there are well-known photos in the book of Laura, Almanzo and the Ingalls family, also of Ma and Pa. Plum Creek is also in the photo. There is a clear copy of the first handwritten chapter of the book and a letter from Laura to Rose. Laura's drawn maps are also clearly placed and there is a large map of Walnut Grove in 1874/1879. There is a, not so well known photo, of Rose and of course photos of Rocky Ridge Farm.

Photos of Walnut Grove itself, such as the church. And lots of photos of the players in the TV series.

Own opinion:

It is a beautiful book, beautiful photos, beautiful story. The story is written in such a way that it is pleasant to read. The information is clearly put together and it contains unknown photos, to which William Anderson manages to gain access.

Het boek is ingedeeld in 15 hoofdstukken en enkele voorwoorden en aanvullingen. Het boek is gedrukt in A4-formaat. Hoofdstuk 1 is de tour door het museum vanaf binnenkomst tot uitgang. Wat er te zien is in het museum, zoals Pa’s viool en andere items van Laura, Almanzo en de familie. Hoofdstuk 2 neemt je mee door het witte huis op de heuvel. Van de keuken tot de grote zitkamer en alles daar tussenin. De schrijver beschrijft de tour zoals ze deze zelf geeft door het huis, met aanvullende informatie en over de kleine details, zoals wat op tafel staat in de eetkamer. De schrijver draagt zorg voor alle items in de huizen van Almanzo en Laura en maakt hier ook schoon. Op het einde van dit hoofdstuk staat een bijzondere ontdekking achter in een kast beschreven. Hoofdstuk 3 gaat over de tour door het rock house en het pad wat je kunt volgen om daar te komen. Ook hier neemt de schrijver je als tour-guide mee door het hele huis van de ingang tot de achterdeur. Hoofdstuk 4 gaat over Rocky Ridge Farm zelf, de appelboomgaard, de eigendomsakte (op Laura’s naam!), de oude weg en het ravijn en Almanzo’s garage en workshop. In hoofdstuk 5 wordt uitleg gegeven over de social clubs waar Laura lid van was, zoals de Justamere club, The Athenian club en de eastern star. In hoofdstuk 6 wordt geschreven over de dieren die op Rocky Ridge gezien zijn. In hoofdstuk 7 wordt in gegaan op de start van Laura’s schrijverscarriere. In hoofdstuk 8 wordt vertelt over Mansfield toen en nu en welke gebouwen er nu nog zijn, die ten tijde dat Laura in Mansfield leefde er ook al stonden en natuurlijk gaat het over de bibliotheek. In hoofdstuk 9 wordt verteld over bezoekers van de TV-serie, maar ook andere bekende bezoekers die Rocky Ridge Farm hebben gezocht, zoals Laura Bush. Dan wordt er een stukje vertelt over de Wilder Days in Mansfield. De hoofdstukken zijn niet altijd lang en vaak onderverdeeld in korte paragrafen. Hoofdstuk 11 gaat over andere interessante plaatsen in Mansfield om te bezoeken, zoals de begraafplaats, de bibliotheek en het huis wat Almanzo en Laura hebben gehuurd in Mansfield. Hoofdstuk 12 gaat over Laura’s geloof. Hoofdstuk 13 gaat over Garth Wiliams. Hoofstuk 14 gaat over een kerstfeest dat is gehouden op Rocky Ridge Farm. Hoofdstuk 15 is de beschouwing van de schrijver.

Aanvullingen zijn: vragen & antwoorden aan andere medewerkers en Laura’s vrienden en bekenden die iets over haar hebben verteld.

Tekeningen:

Alle plaatjes zijn in zwart-wit, alleen niet op de voor en achterkant. De meeste foto’s zijn uit public domain of van de schrijfster zelf. Onder elke foto staat een korte tekst en de verantwoording. Er zijn foto’s van de schrijfster. Er zijn foto’s van de echte Laura, de TV-Laura als kind en als volwassene. Foto’s van het museum, borden langs de weg, het looppad van het farmhouse naar het Rock House. Foto’s van Pa, Ma, Mary, Rose en Almanzo en Laura. Natuurlijk ook foto’s van het huis op de heuvel, ravijn en de achterdeur en borden die hangen bij de achterdeur. Ook staan er foto’s van de cistern en Laura’s serviesgoed in het boek en de bank, sofa en leunstoel in het huis. Foto’s van de vleermuisjes kastjes en het borduurpatroon van Laura. Foto’s van de kippenren en Rock Ridge Farm en de oude weg. Dan natuurlijk foto’s van de buitenkant van het Rock house en het uitzicht vanaf het Rock House. De keuken in het Rock house en serviesgoed en een foto van de deur van het spring-house. Ook staan er foto’s in van de grafstenen van Frank Cooley, Almanzo & Laura en Rose en de familie Seal. In het boek staat een foto van Almanzo’s workshop en van de originele eigendomsakte. Foto’s van slangen, een schildpad en een bobcat staan ook in het boek. Natuurlijk mag een plaatje met alle 9 boeken geschreven door Laura niet ontbreken. Er staat een foto in van een appel en verschillende gebouwen in Mansfield. Verder staan er foto’s van verschillende bekende personen in het boek die op bezoek zijn geweest op Rocky Ridge. Een foto van de buste van Laura en het huis in Mansfield ontbreken ook niet. Dan nog een foto van kerstversiering aan de achterkant van het huis en een foto van het farmhouse in de sneeuw. En dit zijn niet eens alle foto’s die in het boek staan.

Eigen mening:

Dat de foto’s in zwart-wit zijn, is wel jammer, want sommige foto’s zullen mooier zijn in kleur. Maar toch vullen ze het verhaal mooi aan.

Het verhaal is heel goed te lezen, lekker vloeiend en interessant. De schrijver neemt je mee als tour-guide door de huizen en dat is heel leuk. Ook de aanvullende informatie is leuk om te lezen.

Ik heb over het boek gemaild met Michelle, omdat de verschepingskosten heel hoog waren, maar gelukkig was het te koop via Amazon. Gekocht in 2023.

The book is divided into 15 chapters and some forewords and additions. The book is printed in A4 format. Chapter 1 is the tour of the museum from entry to exit. What can be seen in the museum, such as Pa's violin and other items from Laura, Almanzo and the family. Chapter 2 takes you through the white farmhouse on the hill. From the kitchen to the large sitting room and everything in between. The writer describes the tour as she gives it through the house, with additional information and about the small details, such as what is on the table in the dining room. The writer takes care of all the items in Almanzo and Laura's houses and also cleans here. At the end of this chapter a special discovery in the back of a cupboard is described. Chapter 3 is about the tour through the rock house and the path you can take to get there. Here too, the writer takes you as a tour guide through the entire house from the entrance to the back door. Chapter 4 is about Rocky Ridge Farm itself, the apple orchard, the deed (in Laura's name!), the old road and ravine and Almanzo's garage and workshop. Chapter 5 explains the social clubs of which Laura was a member, such as the Justamere club, The Athenian club and the eastern star. Chapter 6 writes about the animals seen on Rocky Ridge. Chapter 7 discusses the start of Laura's writing career. Chapter 8 talks about Mansfield then and now and which buildings are still there, which were already there when Laura lived in Mansfield and of course it is about the library. Chapter 9 tells about visitors from the TV series, as well as other famous visitors who sought out Rocky Ridge Farm, such as Laura Bush. Then there is a bit about the Wilder Days in Mansfield. The chapters are not always long and are often divided into short paragraphs. Chapter 11 is about other interesting places to visit in Mansfield, such as the cemetery, the library and the house Almanzo and Laura rented in Mansfield. Chapter 12 is about Laura's faith. Chapter 13 is about Garth Wiliams. Chapter 14 is about a Christmas party held at Rocky Ridge Farm. Chapter 15 is the writer's reflection.

Additions include: questions & answers to other employees and Laura's friends and acquaintances who have told something about her.

Drawings:

All pictures are in black and white, just not on the front and back. Most photos are from public domain or from the author herself. Below each photo there is a short text and explanation. There are photos of the author. There are photos of the real Laura, the TV Laura as a child and as an adult. Photos of the museum, signs along the road, the walkway from the farmhouse to the Rock House. Photos of Ma, Pa, Mary, Rose and Almanzo and Laura. Of course also photos of the house on the hill, ravine and the back door and signs hanging at the back door. There are also photos of the cistern and Laura's crockery in the book and the couch, sofa and armchair in the house. Photos of the bat cabinets and Laura's embroidery pattern. Photos of the coop and Rock Ridge Farm and the old road. Then of course photos of the outside of the Rock House and the view from the Rock House. The kitchen in the Rock house and crockery and a photo of the door of the spring house. It also contains photos of the gravestones of Frank Cooley, Almanzo & Laura and Rose and the Seal family. The book contains a photo of Almanzo's workshop and the original title deed. Photos of snakes, a turtle and a bobcat are also in the book. Of course, a picture with all 9 books written by Laura should not be missing. It contains a photo of an apple and several buildings in Mansfield. The book also contains photos of various famous people who visited Rocky Ridge. A photo of the bust of Laura and the house in Mansfield are also included. Then another photo of Christmas decorations at the back of the house and a photo of the farmhouse in the snow. And these aren't even all the photos in the book.

Own opinion:

It is unfortunate that the photos are in black and white, because some photos would be more beautiful in color. But they still complement the story nicely.

The story is very easy to read, nice and flowing and interesting. The writer takes you as a tour guide through the houses and that is great fun. The additional information is also fun to read.

I emailed Michelle about the book because the shipping costs were very high, but luckily it was available for purchase on Amazon. Purchased in 2023.

De tekeningen zijn wel algemeen en niet perse toegespitst op Laura Ingalls Wilder, maar ze zijn wel mooi. Veel bloemen, natuur, dieren (kikkers, vlinders, vogels, insecten, slakken, eekhoorntjes) en huisjes

Eigen mening:

Boekje in 2020 eerst als E-boek gekocht, daarna toch in echte vorm. Mooi boekje, netjes, leuke plaatjes en mooie uitspraken van Laura. Veel uitspraken om even over na te denken.

Mooi boekje en mooie uitspraken. Er zit ook een leeslint in met een metalen bloemetje.

Booklet first purchased as an E-book in 2020, then in real form. Nice book, neat, nice pictures and beautiful statements by Laura. Lots of statements to think about.

Beautiful book and beautiful statements. There is also a reading ribbon with a metal flower.

Own opinion:

In itself an interesting book, but not necessarily pleasant to read, because it is very factual. And a summary of many facts. But there is definitely a lot in the book about De Smet.
