Samenvatting:

Het boek is ingedeeld in 15 hoofdstukken en enkele voorwoorden en aanvullingen. Het boek is gedrukt in A4-formaat. Hoofdstuk 1 is de tour door het museum vanaf binnenkomst tot uitgang. Wat er te zien is in het museum, zoals Pa’s viool en andere items van Laura, Almanzo en de familie. Hoofdstuk 2 neemt je mee door het witte huis op de heuvel. Van de keuken tot de grote zitkamer en alles daar tussenin. De schrijver beschrijft de tour zoals ze deze zelf geeft door het huis, met aanvullende informatie en over de kleine details, zoals wat op tafel staat in de eetkamer. De schrijver draagt zorg voor alle items in de huizen van Almanzo en Laura en maakt hier ook schoon. Op het einde van dit hoofdstuk staat een bijzondere ontdekking achter in een kast beschreven. Hoofdstuk 3 gaat over de tour door het rock house en het pad wat je kunt volgen om daar te komen. Ook hier neemt de schrijver je als tour-guide mee door het hele huis van de ingang tot de achterdeur. Hoofdstuk 4 gaat over Rocky Ridge Farm zelf, de appelboomgaard, de eigendomsakte (op Laura’s naam!), de oude weg en het ravijn en Almanzo’s garage en workshop. In hoofdstuk 5 wordt uitleg gegeven over de social clubs waar Laura lid van was, zoals de Justamere club, The Athenian club en de eastern star. In hoofdstuk 6 wordt geschreven over de dieren die op Rocky Ridge gezien zijn. In hoofdstuk 7 wordt in gegaan op de start van Laura’s schrijverscarriere. In hoofdstuk 8 wordt vertelt over Mansfield toen en nu en welke gebouwen er nu nog zijn, die ten tijde dat Laura in Mansfield leefde er ook al stonden en natuurlijk gaat het over de bibliotheek. In hoofdstuk 9 wordt verteld over bezoekers van de TV-serie, maar ook andere bekende bezoekers die Rocky Ridge Farm hebben gezocht, zoals Laura Bush. Dan wordt er een stukje vertelt over de Wilder Days in Mansfield. De hoofdstukken zijn niet altijd lang en vaak onderverdeeld in korte paragrafen. Hoofdstuk 11 gaat over andere interessante plaatsen in Mansfield om te bezoeken, zoals de begraafplaats, de bibliotheek en het huis wat Almanzo en Laura hebben gehuurd in Mansfield. Hoofdstuk 12 gaat over Laura’s geloof. Hoofdstuk 13 gaat over Garth Wiliams. Hoofstuk 14 gaat over een kerstfeest dat is gehouden op Rocky Ridge Farm. Hoofdstuk 15 is de beschouwing van de schrijver.

Aanvullingen zijn: vragen & antwoorden aan andere medewerkers en Laura’s vrienden en bekenden die iets over haar hebben verteld.

Tekeningen:

Alle plaatjes zijn in zwart-wit, alleen niet op de voor en achterkant. De meeste foto’s zijn uit public domain of van de schrijfster zelf. Onder elke foto staat een korte tekst en de verantwoording. Er zijn foto’s van de schrijfster. Er zijn foto’s van de echte Laura, de TV-Laura als kind en als volwassene. Foto’s van het museum, borden langs de weg, het looppad van het farmhouse naar het Rock House. Foto’s van Pa, Ma, Mary, Rose en Almanzo en Laura. Natuurlijk ook foto’s van het huis op de heuvel, ravijn en de achterdeur en borden die hangen bij de achterdeur. Ook staan er foto’s van de cistern en Laura’s serviesgoed in het boek en de bank, sofa en leunstoel in het huis. Foto’s van de vleermuisjes kastjes en het borduurpatroon van Laura. Foto’s van de kippenren en Rock Ridge Farm en de oude weg. Dan natuurlijk foto’s van de buitenkant van het Rock house en het uitzicht vanaf het Rock House. De keuken in het Rock house en serviesgoed en een foto van de deur van het spring-house. Ook staan er foto’s in van de grafstenen van Frank Cooley, Almanzo & Laura en Rose en de familie Seal. In het boek staat een foto van Almanzo’s workshop en van de originele eigendomsakte. Foto’s van slangen, een schildpad en een bobcat staan ook in het boek. Natuurlijk mag een plaatje met alle 9 boeken geschreven door Laura niet ontbreken. Er staat een foto in van een appel en verschillende gebouwen in Mansfield. Verder staan er foto’s van verschillende bekende personen in het boek die op bezoek zijn geweest op Rocky Ridge. Een foto van de buste van Laura en het huis in Mansfield ontbreken ook niet. Dan nog een foto van kerstversiering aan de achterkant van het huis en een foto van het farmhouse in de sneeuw. En dit zijn niet eens alle foto’s die in het boek staan.

Eigen mening:

Dat de foto’s in zwart-wit zijn, is wel jammer, want sommige foto’s zullen mooier zijn in kleur. Maar toch vullen ze het verhaal mooi aan.

Het verhaal is heel goed te lezen, lekker vloeiend en interessant. De schrijver neemt je mee als tour-guide door de huizen en dat is heel leuk. Ook de aanvullende informatie is leuk om te lezen.

Ik heb over het boek gemaild met Michelle, omdat de verschepingskosten heel hoog waren, maar gelukkig was het te koop via Amazon. Gekocht in 2023.

The book is divided into 15 chapters and some forewords and additions. The book is printed in A4 format. Chapter 1 is the tour of the museum from entry to exit. What can be seen in the museum, such as Pa's violin and other items from Laura, Almanzo and the family. Chapter 2 takes you through the white farmhouse on the hill. From the kitchen to the large sitting room and everything in between. The writer describes the tour as she gives it through the house, with additional information and about the small details, such as what is on the table in the dining room. The writer takes care of all the items in Almanzo and Laura's houses and also cleans here. At the end of this chapter a special discovery in the back of a cupboard is described. Chapter 3 is about the tour through the rock house and the path you can take to get there. Here too, the writer takes you as a tour guide through the entire house from the entrance to the back door. Chapter 4 is about Rocky Ridge Farm itself, the apple orchard, the deed (in Laura's name!), the old road and ravine and Almanzo's garage and workshop. Chapter 5 explains the social clubs of which Laura was a member, such as the Justamere club, The Athenian club and the eastern star. Chapter 6 writes about the animals seen on Rocky Ridge. Chapter 7 discusses the start of Laura's writing career. Chapter 8 talks about Mansfield then and now and which buildings are still there, which were already there when Laura lived in Mansfield and of course it is about the library. Chapter 9 tells about visitors from the TV series, as well as other famous visitors who sought out Rocky Ridge Farm, such as Laura Bush. Then there is a bit about the Wilder Days in Mansfield. The chapters are not always long and are often divided into short paragraphs. Chapter 11 is about other interesting places to visit in Mansfield, such as the cemetery, the library and the house Almanzo and Laura rented in Mansfield. Chapter 12 is about Laura's faith. Chapter 13 is about Garth Wiliams. Chapter 14 is about a Christmas party held at Rocky Ridge Farm. Chapter 15 is the writer's reflection.

Additions include: questions & answers to other employees and Laura's friends and acquaintances who have told something about her.

Drawings:

All pictures are in black and white, just not on the front and back. Most photos are from public domain or from the author herself. Below each photo there is a short text and explanation. There are photos of the author. There are photos of the real Laura, the TV Laura as a child and as an adult. Photos of the museum, signs along the road, the walkway from the farmhouse to the Rock House. Photos of Ma, Pa, Mary, Rose and Almanzo and Laura. Of course also photos of the house on the hill, ravine and the back door and signs hanging at the back door. There are also photos of the cistern and Laura's crockery in the book and the couch, sofa and armchair in the house. Photos of the bat cabinets and Laura's embroidery pattern. Photos of the coop and Rock Ridge Farm and the old road. Then of course photos of the outside of the Rock House and the view from the Rock House. The kitchen in the Rock house and crockery and a photo of the door of the spring house. It also contains photos of the gravestones of Frank Cooley, Almanzo & Laura and Rose and the Seal family. The book contains a photo of Almanzo's workshop and the original title deed. Photos of snakes, a turtle and a bobcat are also in the book. Of course, a picture with all 9 books written by Laura should not be missing. It contains a photo of an apple and several buildings in Mansfield. The book also contains photos of various famous people who visited Rocky Ridge. A photo of the bust of Laura and the house in Mansfield are also included. Then another photo of Christmas decorations at the back of the house and a photo of the farmhouse in the snow. And these aren't even all the photos in the book.

Own opinion:

It is unfortunate that the photos are in black and white, because some photos would be more beautiful in color. But they still complement the story nicely.

The story is very easy to read, nice and flowing and interesting. The writer takes you as a tour guide through the houses and that is great fun. The additional information is also fun to read.

I emailed Michelle about the book because the shipping costs were very high, but luckily it was available for purchase on Amazon. Purchased in 2023.
