Samenvatting:

Een dik boek waarin drie boeken zijn gebundeld. De boeken "Het kleine huis in het grote bos", "het kleine huis op de prairie" en "het kleine huis aan de rivier. De verhalen zijn ons allemaal wel bekend en wijken niet veel af van de verhalen die al bij ons bekend zijn.

Het vertelt een jaar dat het gezin met Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura en Carrie in het grote bos in Wisconsin woont. Er staan veel verhalen in die Pa aan zijn meisjes vertelde. Er gebeurd veel in het verhaal, ze maken kerst mee, gaan naar een feest bij grootvader, gaan een keer naar de stad en verder helpt Laura mee met de dagelijkse dingen die in huis gebeuren, zoals het maken van kaas, het roken van vlees, het oogsten.

In het tweede deel trekt het gezin naar de prairie. Er wordt eerst vertelt over de reis in de huifkar, daarna over de bouw van het huis, de stal en de put en open haard. Er wordt contact gemaakt met andere mensen, zoals Meneer Edwards en meneer en mevrouw Scott. Ook krijgt het gezin te maken met de indianen die in het gebied wonen. Pa en Ma proberen een bestaan op te bouwen en zaaien en oogsten. Ze zijn heel blij als ze een koe krijgen. Het gezin wordt getroffen door een ziekte, waarvoor Dr. Tan hen komt verzorgen en ze maken een schoorsteenbrand mee. Kerstfeest dat jaar valt bijna in het water, want er is geen sneeuw maar heel veel regen. Gelukkig haalt meneer Edwards de kadootjes voor Laura en Mary op bij de kerstman en komt ze brengen. Uiteindelijk gaan de indianen ruzie maken over de aanwezigheid van de blanken. De familie wordt uit de slaap gehouden door de harde oorlogskreten. Laura en het gezub zien uiteindelijk de indianen vertrekken in een lange, lange rij. Hierna vertrekt het gezin ook weer in de huifkar.

In deel 3 komt de huifkar aan bij een huis in de grond. Hoewel het een kleine woning is, weet Ma, met hulp van Laura en Mary, het huis gezellig te maken. De meisjes spelen veel bij de rivier, die voor hun huis loopt. Pa bewerkt het land en Ma regelt het huishouden. Laura en Mary maken van alles mee; ze spelen in de hooiberg, krijgen paarden met kerst, gaan zwemmen met Pa en gaan voor het eerst naar school. Pa bouwt een mooi nieuw huis, maar voor hij de oogst binnen kan halen, komt er een grote wolk die bestaat uit sprinkhanen. De sprinkhanen eten alles op wat groen is. Pa moet weg om geld te verdienen. Ma en de meisjes proberen zo goed als het gaat alles te doen. Ze overleven een prairiebrand en vuurbollen. Als Pa weer thuis is, is het feest. Dan gaat Pa naar de stad, maar verdwaalt in een sneeuwstorm. Het zijn spannende dagen, maar gelukkig komt Pa weer veilig thuis.

Tekeningen:

Ik heb dit boek alleen maar voor de tekeningen van Helen Sewell. De plaatjes zijn wat donker. Bij iedere tekening staat een onderschrift dat verwijst naar het verhaal. Sommige tekeningen zijn paginagroot en andere staan tussen het verhaal in. De kaft is getekend door Renée Graef.

Eigen mening:

Een dik boek, bijna nieuw. Ik heb het boek alleen voor de plaatjes van Helen Sewell. De plaatjes zijn wat donker en ik vind dat ze niet de warmte hebben van de tekeningen van Garth Williams, maar ze horen zeker bij de boeken.

Summary:

A thick book in which three books are bundled. The books "Little House in the Big Woods", "Little House on the Prairie" and "Little House on the River". The stories are all familiar to us and do not differ much from the stories that we already know.

It tells a story about a year that the family with Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura and Carrie lives in the big woods in Wisconsin. There are many stories that Pa told his girls. A lot happens in the story, they experience Christmas, go to a party at grandfather's, go to town and Laura helps with the daily things that happen in the house, such as making cheese, smoking meat, harvesting.

In the second part, the family moves to the prairie. First, the story is about the journey in the covered wagon, then about the construction of the house, the stable and the well and fireplace. Contact is made with other people, such as Mr. Edwards and Mr. and Mrs. Scott. The family also has to deal with the Indians who live in the area. Pa and Ma try to build a life and sow and harvest. They are very happy when they get a cow. The family is struck by an illness, for which Dr. Tann comes to take care of them and they experience a chimney fire. Christmas that year almost is missed, because there is no snow and a lot of rain. Fortunately, Mr. Edwards picks up the presents for Laura and Mary from Santa Claus and comes to deliver them. Eventually the Indians start to argue about the presence of the whites. The family is kept awake by the loud war cries. Laura and the family eventually see the Indians leave in a long, long line. After this the family also leaves in the covered wagon.

In part 3 the covered wagon arrives at a house in the ground. Although it is a small house, Ma, with the help of Laura and Mary, manages to make the house cozy. The girls play a lot by the river, which runs in front of their house. Pa works the land and Ma takes care of the house. Laura and Mary experience all kinds of things; they play in the haystack, get horses for Christmas, go swimming with Pa and go to school for the first time. Pa builds a beautiful new house, but before he can harvest the crops, a big cloud of grasshoppers comes. The grasshoppers eat everything that is green. Pa has to leave to earn money. Ma and the girls try to do everything as best they can. They survive a prairie fire and fireballs. When Pa gets home, there is a party. Then Pa goes to town, but gets lost in a snowstorm. These are exciting days, but fortunately Pa comes home safely.

Drawings:

I only have this book for the drawings by Helen Sewell. The pictures are a bit dark. Each drawing has a caption that refers to the story. Some drawings are full-page and others are in between the story. The cover is drawn by Renée Graef.

Own opinion:

A thick book, almost new. I only have the book for the pictures by Helen Sewell. The pictures are a bit dark and I think they do not have the warmth of the drawings by Garth Williams, but they certainly belong to the books.
