Samenvatting:

Het gezin woont weer op de ontginning. Pa werkt in de stad als timmerman en Laura kan ook in de stad gaan werken als naaister. Laura denkt terug aan het leven op de ontginning, het werken in de tuin, haar wandelingen op de prairie met Mary. Ze werkt in de stad en maakt knoopsgaten in hemden. Pa en Ma hebben besloten dat Mary dit jaar naar de school voor blinden in Iowa gaat. Het moet lukken met de opbrengst van de oogst en nu het het gezin beter gaat. Wel moet pa het veld opnieuw inzaaien omdat muizen de zaden opeten en als de oogst mooi is, komen de kraaien massaal de haver en mais eten. Pa schiet de vogels en je blijkt ze te kunnen eten. Dit is wel een teleurstelling, maar pa heeft geld verdient en ook Laura heeft haar verdiende geld aan de familie gegeven en dus gaat Mary toch naar het college. Pa en ma brengen Mary weg. Het huis is leeg zonder Mary, maar Laura, Carrie en Grace beginnen vast aan de grote najaarsschoonmaak. Voor de winter verhuist het gezin weer naar de grote stad. Laura en Carrie gaan naar school. De lerares dit jaar is Juffrouw Wilder en zij en Laura kunnen niet goed met elkaar opschieten. Hoewel Laura wel vriendinnen krijgt zoals Ida en Mary Power, komt ook Nellie Oleson weer terug. Dat is ook bepaald niet Laura’s vriendin. De meisjes maken onderling plezier, maar worden nogal eens verstoord door Nellie. Nellie is “teacher’s pet” en is vaak onaardig tegen Laura. Ze zegt dat Laura alles voor elkaar krijgt omdat haar vader in de schoolboard zit. Mrs Wilder is onaardig tegen Carrie, die nog erg zwak is van de lange winter. Laura kan er niet tegen en als Carrie met haar vriendin Mamie per ongeluk zachtjes de schoolbank schommelt, mogen zij daar mee door gaan van mrs Wilder zonder te leren. Mamie loopt weg, maar Carrie moet alleen doorgaan. Laura wordt zo boos dat zij het gaat doen, maar dan met herrie. Laura en Carrie worden door Mrs Wilder van school gestuurd. Natuurlijk gaan Laura en Carrie weer terug naar school. Later komt de schoolboard nog op bezoek en liegt Mrs Wilder dat Laura alle problemen veroorzaakt. Gelukkig eindigt de schooltermijn en komt er in de winter een nieuwe leraar. Laura leert veel, want ze wil les gaan geven zodra dat kan om geld te verdienen om Mary op college te houden. Maar ergens in de winter is ze helemaal klaar met leren. Ze is met Mary Power naar een sociable geweest, maar dat was saai. Ma laat haar nog een verhaal voorlezen, maar Pa heeft iets anders bedacht. De stad richt een letterkrans op en iedereen komt. De eerste bijeenkomst is een spellingswedstrijd, waarbij Pa de hele stad uit spelt. Daarna is er wekelijks een bijeenkomt. Er wordt muziek gemaakt, een musical gehouden, wassenbeelden tentoonstelling en het is reuze leuk. Als dan ook de kerk nog klaar is, is er op zondag twee keer kerk en zondagsschool. Het is druk met leuke dingen, maar er komt weinig van leren. Laura voelt zich wel schuldig als haar resultaten niet zo goed zijn als gehoopt. De volgende lente en zomer op de ontginning leert ze heel veel om de verloren tijd in te halen. Ze heeft zin in weer voor de herfst naar de stad te gaan. Met weer een goede, fijne leraar en haar vriendinnen om zich heen geniet Laura van school. Er worden nog steeds veel leuke dingen geregeld, zoals oa een opwekkingsbijeenkomst, waar Laura weinig aan vind, maar waarna Almanzo haar voor het eerst naar huis begeleid. Daarna volgt de tentoonstelling van school. Laura moet het eerste en langste stuk geschiedenis doen, Ida doet het tweede. Laura doet het erg goed. Laura bereidt zich voor op een openbare les. Hierna krijgt ze onverwacht haar diploma voor lerares en kan verderop op de prairie les gaan geven.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn van Garth Williams en in kleur. De plaatjes zijn bekend, maar wel mooi en warm, zo met kleuren.

Met de bekende tekeningen van Garth Williams. Soms een hele pagina, soms kleine tekeningetjes. Het zijn de warme tekeningen en leuk om naar te kijken. De kleine tekeningetjes zijn van huisjes, bloemen, Laura die het kalf voedt, een huis op de prairie, de meisjes rondom een poesje in de handen van Mary, gebouwen, Pa en Laura lopen hand in hand weg van het huis, Laura zit te naaien in de winkel, Ma met haar schort vol kuikentjes, Laura, Pa en Carrie in de stad op 4 juli, Pa en de meisjes kijken naar het paardenrennen, Mary in een mooie jurk, Laura en Carrie plukken mais en worden aangevallen door vogels, Pa, Ma en Mary in een wagen, gemend door een jongen, wegrijdend van het huis. Laura in een schoolbank, Nellie staat er naast, Laura bij de ladenkast, Laura schommelt de schoolbank met Carrie, Miss Wilder in gesprek met de schoolcommissie, meisjes die naamkaartjes uitzoeken, Laura knipt een pony, Pa en Mr Foster bij de leraar tijdens de spelwedstrijd, een zingende dame, blindemannetje spelen, de Mulligan band, Almanzo tikt aan zijn pet na het thuisbrengen van Laura en Laura krijgt applaus na haar presentatie.

Eigen mening:

Het boek zat bij het pakket dat Susan Duggan opstuurde. Ik wilde graag dit deel, omdat het een van mijn lievelingsdelen is. De plaatjes zijn in kleur inderdaad de moeite waard en mooi. Het boek is ook gedrukt op mooi papier.

Summary:

The family is back on the claim. Pa works in town as a carpenter and Laura can also go to town to work as a seamstress. Laura thinks back to life on the claim, working in the garden, her walks on the prairie with Mary. She works in town and makes buttonholes in shirts. Pa and Ma have decided that Mary will go to the school for the blind in Iowa this year. It should work with the yield of the harvest and now that the family is doing better. Pa does have to reseed the field because mice eat the seeds and when the harvest is good, the crows come en masse to eat the oats and corn. Pa shoots the birds and it turns out that you can eat them. This is a disappointment, but Pa has earned money and Laura has also given her earned money to the family and so Mary goes to college after all. Pa and Ma take Mary away. The house is empty without Mary, but Laura, Carrie and Grace start the big fall cleaning. The family moves back to the big city before winter. Laura and Carrie go to school. The teacher this year is Miss Wilder and she and Laura do not get along well. Although Laura does make friends like Ida and Mary Power, Nellie Oleson also returns. She is definitely not Laura's friend either. The girls have fun together, but are often interrupted by Nellie. Nellie is "teacher's pet" and is often mean to Laura. She says that Laura gets everything done because her father is on the school board. Mrs Wilder is mean to Carrie, who is still very weak from the long winter. Laura cannot stand it and when Carrie and her friend Mamie accidentally rock the school desk gently, Mrs Wilder allows them to continue doing it without studying. Mamie runs away, but Carrie has to continue alone. Laura gets so angry that she does it, but then with noise. Laura and Carrie are expelled from school by Mrs Wilder. Of course Laura and Carrie go back to school. Later the school board comes to visit and Mrs Wilder lies that Laura is causing all the trouble. Fortunately, the school term ends and a new teacher arrives in the winter. Laura learns a lot, because she wants to teach as soon as she can to earn money to keep Mary in college. But somewhere in the winter she is completely done with learning. She went to a social with Mary Power, but that was boring. Ma lets her read a story, but Pa has something else in mind. The town sets up a letter circle and everyone comes. The first meeting is a spelling contest, in which Pa spells down the whole town. After that there is a weekly meeting. There is music, a musical, a waxwork exhibition and it is great fun. When the church is also finished, there is church and Sunday school twice on Sunday. It is busy with fun things, but there is little learning. Laura does feel guilty when her results are not as good as she had hoped. The following spring and summer on the claim she learns a lot to make up for lost time. She is looking forward to going back to town before the fall. With a good, nice teacher again and her friends around her, Laura enjoys school. Many fun things are still being arranged, such as a revival meeting, which Laura does not enjoy much, but after which Almanzo accompanies her home for the first time. Then follows the school exhibition. Laura has to do the first and longest piece of history, Ida does the second. Laura does very well. Laura prepares for a public lesson. After this she unexpectedly receives her diploma for teacher and can teach further on the prairie.

The drawings are by Garth Williams and in color. The pictures are familiar, but beautiful and warm, with colors.

With the familiar drawings by Garth Williams. Sometimes a whole page, sometimes small drawings. They are the warm drawings and nice to look at. The small drawings are of houses, flowers, Laura feeding the calf, a house on the prairie, the girls around a kitten in Mary's hands, buildings, Pa and Laura walking hand in hand away from the house, Laura is sewing in the shop, Ma with her apron full of chicks, Laura, Pa and Carrie in the city on the 4th of July, Pa and the girls watching the horse races, Mary in a beautiful dress, Laura and Carrie picking corn and being attacked by birds, Pa, Ma and Mary in a wagon, driven by a boy, driving away from the house. Laura in a school desk, Nellie standing next to her, Laura by the chest of drawers, Laura swinging the school desk with Carrie, Miss Wilder talking to the school committee, girls choosing name tags, Laura cutting a pony, Pa and Mr Foster with the teacher during the spelling bee, a singing lady, playing blind man's buff, the Mulligan band, Almanzo tapping his cap after bringing Laura home and Laura getting applause after her presentation.

Own opinion:

The book was included in the package that Susan Duggan sent. I really wanted this part, because it is one of my favorite parts. The pictures are indeed worth it in color and beautiful. The book is also printed on beautiful paper.
