Het gezin woont weer op de ontginning. Pa werkt in de stad als timmerman en Laura kan ook in de stad gaan werken, als naaister. Laura denkt terug aan het leven op de ontginning, het werken in de tuin, haar wandelingen op de prairie met Mary en hoe ze samen de ontginning bewoonbaar maken. Maar ze gaat werken in de stad en maakt knoopsgaten in hemden. Pa en Ma hebben besloten dat Mary dit jaar naar de school voor blinden in Iowa gaat. Zij brengen Mary weg. Het huis is leeg zonder Mary, maar Laura, Carrie en Grace beginnen vast aan de grote schoonmaak. Voor de winter verhuisd het gezin weer naar de grote stad. Laura en Carrie gaan naar school. De lerares dit jaar is Juffrouw Wilder en zij en Laura kunnen niet goed met elkaar opschieten. Hoewel Laura wel vriendinnen krijgt zoals Ida en Mary Power, komt ook Nellie Oleson weer terug. Dat is bepaald niet Laura’s vriendin. De meisjes maken onderling plezier, maar dat wordt nogal eens verstoord door Nellie. In de stad gebeuren in de winter allemaal leuke dingen. Er wordt een letterkrans opgericht, waarna vele leuke avonden plaatsvinden. Tevens is er een kerk opgericht waar de familie Ingalls naar toe gaat. Laura bereidt zich voor op een openbare les. Hierna krijgt ze onverwacht haar diploma voor lerares en kan ergens op de prairie les gaan geven.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn paginagroot en getekend door Helen Sewell en Mildred Boyle. De tekeningen hebben allemaal een ondertitel die komt uit het verhaal. De tekeningen zijn nog mooi. De eerste tekening is in een blauwige kleur, van Laura in de stad. De volgende tekening is van Pa en Laura op weg naar hun werk bij opkomende zon. Dan volgt een tekeningetje van een vrouw achter een naaimachine en een meisje aan het naaien. Dan een meisje met een beker-lepel in haar handen. Dan de tekening van Mary in een mooie jurk. Dan een vogel die van de mais pikt. Dan twee meisjes met bloemen in hun armen op de prairie. Het volgende plaatje is van een jongen met zijn handen op zijn billen in een klaslokaal. Dan Almanzo en Laura in een buggy en Laura geeft haar naamkaartje. Dan een plaatje van Laura voor de spiegel. Een grote plaatje van allemaal mensen in het donker op weg naar het schoolgebouw. Een tekening van een orgel. Een varken met appel in zijn bek. Jongeren aan een eettafel. Almanzo neemt afscheid van Laura bij de deur. En het laatste plaatje is van boeken, lamp, lei op een tafel.

Eigen mening:

Het is een oud boek, gelezen, ruikt ook zo. Ik heb het voor de tekeningen van Helen Sewell. Het is een oud bibliotheekboek.

Summary:

The family lives on the claim again. Pa works in the city as a carpenter and Laura can also go to work in the city, as a seamstress. Laura thinks back to life on the claim, working in the garden, her walks on the prairie with Mary and how they make the claim habitable together. But she goes to work in the city and makes buttonholes in shirts. Pa and Ma have decided that Mary will go to the school for the blind in Iowa this year. They take Mary away. The house is empty without Mary, but Laura, Carrie and Grace already start the autumn- cleaning. The family moves back to town before winter. Laura and Carrie go to school. The teacher this year is Miss Wilder and she and Laura do not get along well. Although Laura does make friends like Ida and Mary Power, Nellie Oleson also comes back. She is definitely not Laura's friend. The girls have fun together, but that is often interrupted by Nellie. In town all kinds of fun things happen in the winter. A literarie is set up, after which many fun evenings take place. A church has also been set up, which the Ingalls family attends. Laura prepares for a public lesson. After this, she unexpectedly receives her certificate as a teacher and can teach somewhere on the prairie.

Drawings:

The drawings are full-page and drawn by Helen Sewell and Mildred Boyle. The drawings all have a subtitle that comes from the story. The drawings are still beautiful. The first drawing is in a blueish color, of Laura in the city. The next drawing is of Pa and Laura on their way to work at sunrise. Then follows a small drawing of a woman behind a sewing machine and a girl sewing. Then a girl with a cup-spoon in her hands. Then the drawing of Mary in a beautiful dress. Then a bird pecking at the corn. Then two girls with flowers in their arms on the prairie. The next picture is of a boy with his hands on his bottom in a classroom. Then Almanzo and Laura in a buggy and Laura gives her name card. Then a picture of Laura in front of the mirror. A large picture of all people in the dark on their way to the school building. A drawing of an organ. A pig with an apple in its mouth. Young people at a dining table. Almanzo says goodbye to Laura at the door. And the last picture is of books, lamp, slate on a table.

Own opinion:

It is an old book, read, smells like it too. I have it for the drawings of Helen Sewell. It is an old library book.
