Samenvatting:

Een dun boekje van ongeveer 45 bladzijden, maar wel vol informatie over de familie Ingalls. Het begint bij de familie van Charles en Caroline en gaat daarna verder over de familie Ingalls zelf. Over Mary en haar scholing, Laura en Almanzo en Rose, Carrie en haar werkzaamheden en gezondheid en haar huwelijk en Grace en haar huwelijk. Het vertelt over het huis in De Smet waar Pa en Ma voor het laatst woonden en het lange leven van Ma. Er wordt vooral veel vertelt over Carrie en hoe zij werkt en uiteindelijk tot haar huwelijk komt.

Het boekje eindigt met de eerste publicatie van Grace’s dagboek. Letterlijk weergegeven, inclusief de spelfouten. Er staat ook een herinnering in van Carrie aan de eerste jaren in De Smet. Het boekje gaat kort in op de reizen die de familie heeft gemaakt in de huifkar.

Tekeningen:

Er staan verschillende mooie foto’s in. Van het huis in Third Street zijn er verschillende foto’s, van het huis van Carrie in Keystone. Een foto van Carrie tijdens een inhuldiging en haar claim shanty en met haar stiefkinderen. De eerste foto van Ma in de kamer in Third street Ook een foto van Laura en Lansford Ingalls. Er is ook een mooie foto van een kralenmandje gemaakt door Mary. Ook een foto van de viool. En de trouwfoto van Pa en Ma in het doosje en van Pa en Ma later zowel samen als apart. De foto van de 3 meisjes Ingalls en van Mary. Handtekeningen van Pa en Ma en een foto van Plum Creek en het hotel in Burr Oak. Er is een kaartje van de reizen. Ook van Grace en Nate is er een foto en van Laura in Mansfield en Ma op leeftijd

En een paar tekeningen getekend door Helen Sewell van een blokhut en Pa aan het ploegen.

De foto’s zijn allemaal in zwart-wit.

Eigen mening:

Een dun, erg interessant boekje. Mooie foto’s.

Summary:

A small book of about 45 pages, but packed with information about the Ingalls family. It begins with the family of Charles and Caroline and then continues about the Ingalls family itself. It covers Mary and her education, Laura and Almanzo and Rose, Carrie and her work and health, her marriage, and Grace and her marriage. It tells about the house in De Smet where Ma and Pa last lived and Ma's long life. It focuses primarily on Carrie and her work and her eventual marriage.

The book ends with the first publication of Grace's diary, reproduced verbatim, including spelling errors. It also includes Carrie's recollection of her early years in De Smet. The book briefly discusses the family's travels in the covered wagon.

Illustrations:

It contains several beautiful photographs. There are several photos of the house on Third Street and of Carrie's house in Keystone. A photo of Carrie at an inauguration, her claim shanty, and with her stepchildren. The first photo of Ma in the room on Third Street. Also a photo of Laura and Lansford Ingalls. There's also a beautiful photo of a bead basket made by Mary. Also a photo of the violin. And the wedding photo of Pa and Ma in the box, and of Pa and Ma later, both together and separately. A photo of the three Ingalls girls and Mary. Signatures of Pa and Ma, and a photo of Plum Creek and the hotel in Burr Oak. There's a map from the trips. There's also a photo of Grace and Nate, and of Laura in Mansfield and Ma in her later years.

And a few drawings by Helen Sewell of a log cabin and Pa plowing.

The photos are all in black and white.

My own opinion:

A small, very interesting book. Beautiful photos.
