Samenvatting:

Een mooi boek vol foto's en ook tekst. Niet te moeilijke tekst. Prettig om te lezen. Er staat veel informatie in het boek. Helaas af en toe een klein foutje. Het is geen heel dik boek, maar toch erg uitgebreid met informatie en het omvat het hele leven van Laura Ingalls en ook van daarvoor (over haar ouders) en veel over dochter Rose.

Het boek heeft 15 hoofdstukken: “geliefde schrijfster”, “ van het grote bos naar de prairie”, “de grote bossen lonken”, “benarde situatie op de prairie”, “stadsleven”, “welkom terug in Walnut Grove”, “door naar De Smet”, “Bessie en Manly”, “zware tijden”, “een nieuwe bladzijde”, “het leven op Rocky Ridge”, “Het schrijversleven begint”, “Rose keert terug naar Rocky Ridge”, “Een moeder-dochter overeenkomst”, “van boerin tot prijswinnende schrijfster”, “een literaire erfernis”. Het boekje eindigt met een tijdlijn en veel informatie over citaten, foto’s en waar je informatie kunt vinden. Door het hele boek is in kleine “wolkjes” korte aanvullende informatie beschreven, zoals over een huifkar, de homestead act, indianen, gevaren op de prairie, roodvonk, dugouts, sprinkhanenplaag, een infarct, spoorwegen, de Dakota Boom, landmeters, weer en goederen, een shanty, pionier-leraren, een lening, difteritis, de panic van 1893, morgan paarden, serie verhalen, west from home, de World’s fair en vrouwenrechten. Sommige stukjes zijn heel kort (enkele regels), andere stukjes zijn net iets langer.

Tekeningen:

Verder staan er heel veel foto's in het boek, in kleur en in zwart-wit. Oa een klein fotootje van de bouw van het huis op Rocky Ridge farm en een oude foto van DeSmet. Een foto van Rose met leesbril. Er staan ook brieven in die Laura heeft gekregen van fans en een brief van haar agent. Een foto van het stenen huis in de sneeuw en een kleine foto van Rose voor de piramides in Egypte. Een mooie, vroege foto van de schuur op Rocky Ridge. Een foto van Carrie voor de drukkerij in De Smet. In de eerste jaren zijn het vooral algemene tekeningen en foto's, behalve dan een foto van het eerste handwerk van Laura. Al met al genoeg foto's om eens goed te bekijken en ze zijn ook allemaal erg duidelijk.

Eigen mening:

Mooi boekje, goed leesbaar, veel informatie. Interessant. En veel mooie foto’s.

A beautiful book full of photos and also text. Not too difficult text. Pleasant to read. There is a lot of information in the book. Unfortunately a small mistake every now and then. It is not a very thick book, but it is very extensive with information and it covers the whole life of Laura Ingalls and also before (about her parents) and a lot about daughter Rose.

The book has 15 chapters: “beloved writer”, “from the big woods to the prairie”, “the big woods beckons”, “prairie plight”, “city life”, “welcome back to Walnut Grove”, “on to De Smet”, “Bessie and Manly”, “Hard Times”, “A New Page”, “Life on Rocky Ridge”, “The Writering Life Begins”, “Rose Returns to Rocky Ridge”, “A Mother-Daughter arrangement”, “from farmer to award-winning author”, “a literary legacy”. The booklet ends with a timeline and lots of information about quotes, photos and where to find information. Throughout the book, brief additional information is described in small "clouds", such as about a covered wagon, the homestead act, Indians, dangers on the prairie, scarlet fever, dugouts, plague of locusts, an infarction, railroads, the Dakota Boom, surveyors, weather and goods, a shanty, pioneer teachers, a mortgage, diphtheria, the panic of 1893, morgan horses, serial stories, west from home, the world's fair and women's rights. Some pieces are very short (a few lines), other pieces are slightly longer.

Drawings:

There are also many photos in the book, in color and in black and white. Including a small photo of the construction of the house on Rocky Ridge farm and an old photo of DeSmet. A picture of Rose with reading glasses. It also includes letters Laura has received from fans and a letter from her agent. A picture of the rock house in the snow and a small picture of Rose in front of the pyramids in Egypt. A nice, early photo of the barn on Rocky Ridge. A photo of Carrie in front of the printing company in De Smet. In the first years it is mainly general drawings and photographs, except for a photograph of Laura's first needlework. All in all enough photos to take a good look at and they are all very clear.

Own opinion:

Beautiful book, easy to read, lots of information. Interesting. And many beautiful pictures.
