Dit is deel 4 van de Caroline hoofdstuk-boeken.
Er staan 8 hoofdstukken in het boek.
1. Naar de stad.
Caroline mag voor het eerst met moeder en Henry mee naar de stad. Dat is heel spannend. Ze ziet een boel nieuwe dingen en schrikt van de herrie die de postkoets maakt. Dan staat ze verbaasd over de passagiers. Ook gaan ze nog naar de winkel.
2. De planken in de winkel
In de winkel komen moeder, Caroline en Henry mr. Carpenter tegen. Henry geeft zijn zak vol as af aan de winkelier. Caroline kijkt rond in de winkel, waar werkelijk va nalles te koop is. In de winkel zijn mooie dingen te zien.
3. Spel-wedstrijd
Caroline zit in de eerste klas op school en moet voor haar klas meedoen aan de spelwedstrijd van deze week. Ze vindt het heel spannend en doet heel erg haar best. Het andere meisje uit de eerste klas dat meedoet is een meisje dat pas net op school is, Elsa. Elsa doet ook erg haar best, als kent ze niet zo goed de regels van de wedstrijd. Caroline is verbaasd dat haar juf dat toelaat. Dan spelt Elsa een woord fout, wat Caroline wel goed kan. Elsa wordt heel boos en zegt dat ze wel goed heeft gespeld.
4. Woorden
Als ze thuis zijn voor lunch blijft Caroline nadenken over Elsa. Caroline en Martha vertellen  moeder wat er gebeurd is en die legt Martha en Caroline uit dat Elsa Duits spreekt en daarom zo verlegen is en zo slecht Engels praat. Door omstandigheden moet Caroline alleen terug naar school en ze komt onderweg Elsa tegen. Elsa wil wegrennen, maar Caroline houdt haar tegen en vertelt dat ze begrijpt dat Elsa gelijk had en een andere taal spreekt. Ze besluit om Elsa te helpen en leert haar nieuwe Engelse woorden.
5. Old Dan Tucker
Op een dag besluit moeder naar de stad te gaan en alle kinderen gaan mee. Onderweg komen ze Mr. Carpenter tegen. Hij helpt moeder met alle kinderen en zorgt ook dat ze rustig kan winkelen. De meisjes kijken met hem naar een schaakwedstrijd. Op de terugweg zijn ze allemaal moe en zingt Mr. Carpenter een voor Caroline onbekend, grappig liedje: Old Dan Tucker.
6. Dansfeest
Het is winter. Grootmoeder is naar het huis van oom Elisha om daar te helpen en Caroline vindt het maar saai in huis. Dan gaat het sap in de bomen stromen en Joseph en Henry gaan Mr. Carpenter helpen om sap te verzamelen. Moeder weet dat daarna wordt afgesloten met een dansfeest en besluit om, samen met de meisjes, alles daarvoor in orde te maken. Tevens leert moeder de kinderen enkele dansen.
7. Klaarmaken voor het feest.
De dagen daarna maakt moeder heel veel stroop van het sap dat de jongens meebrengen. Tevens maakt ze suikergoed. Op de avond van het feest liggen er voor de meisjes nieuwe jurken klaar en ook moeder heeft voor zichzelf een nieuwe jurk gemaakt.
8. Het suikerstroop feest
Het feest wordt gegeven in het huis van Mrs. Stoddard. Het huis is veel groter dan het huis van Caroline en Mrs. Stoddard is zo vriendelijk om de meisjes een rondleiding te geven. Caroline vergaapt zich aan alle mooie dingen. Ze danst mee en eet en afsluitend leest Mrs. Stoddard een sprookje voor. Caroline zal haar eerste feest nooit vergeten.

Tekeningen:

Elk hoofdstuk heeft wel een tekening. De ene wat groter dan de andere. Het zijn mooie tekeningen met veel gevoel getekend. Er is een tekening van Caroline die Elsa nieuwe woorden leert, moeder in haar mooie nieuwe jurk, De kinderen rondom Mrs Stoddard die voorleest. Caroline en Elsa in de rij van de spelwedstrijd. De meisjes die staan te kijken bij het schaakspel in de stad. Moeder die de kinderen leert dansen. Caroline die rondkijkt in de winkel en Caroline die kijkt naar de postkoets met al zijn passagiers.

Eigen mening:

Een boekje met bekende verhalen uit de Caroline-serie. Mooie tekeningen. Fijn en makkelijk om te lezen. Als lje de boeken van de Caroline-serie hebt, is dit boekje niet echt een must, maar als je de serie niet hebt, is dit een interessant boekje.

This is part 4 of the Caroline chapter books.

There are 8 chapters in the book.

1. Going to town.

Caroline is allowed to go to town with Mother and Henry for the first time. That's very exciting. She sees a lot of new things and is shocked by the noise the stagecoach makes. Then she looks amazed at the passengers. They also go to the store.

2. The Grocer’s shelves

At the store, Mother, Caroline and Henry run into Mr. Carpenter. Henry hands his sack full of ashes to the shopkeeper. Caroline looks around the store, where everything is for sale. There are beautiful things to see in the store.

3. Spelling bee

Caroline is in first grade at school and has to compete for her class in this week's game competition. She finds it very exciting and tries very hard. The other girl from the first class who participates is a girl who has just started school, Elsa. Elsa also tries very hard, although she does not know the rules of the competition very well. Caroline is surprised that her teacher allows this. Then Elsa spells a word wrong, which Caroline can do well. Elsa gets very angry and says she spelled correctly.

4. Words

When they get home for lunch, Caroline continues to think about Elsa. Caroline and Martha tell Mother what happened and she explains to Martha and Caroline that Elsa speaks German and that's why she's so shy and her English is so bad. Due to circumstances, Caroline has to go back to school alone and she bumps into Elsa on the way. Elsa wants to run away, but Caroline stops her and tells her that she understands that Elsa was right and speaks a different language. She decides to help Elsa and teaches her new English words.

5.Old Dan Tucker

One day mother decides to go to the city and all the children go with her. On the way they meet Mr. Carpenter. He helps mother with all the children and also ensures that she can shop in peace. The girls watch a chess match with him. On the way back they are all tired and Mr. Carpenter learns them a funny song unknown to Caroline: Old Dan Tucker.

6. Dancing

It is winter. Grandmother has gone to Uncle Elisha's house to help and Caroline thinks the house is silent. Then the sap will flow in the trees and Joseph and Henry will help Mr. Carpenter to collect tree juice. Mother knows that this will conclude end up with a dance and decides to prepare everything for it together with the girls. Mother also teaches the children some dances.

7. Getting ready

The following days mother makes a lot of syrup from the juice that the boys bring. She also makes clothes. On the evening of the party, new dresses are waiting for the girls and mother has also made a new dress for herself.

8. The Maple Frolic

The party is held at Mrs. Stoddard. The house is much bigger than Caroline and Mrs. Stoddard is kind enough to give the girls a tour. Caroline marvels at all the beautiful things. She dances and eats and in conclusion Mrs. Stoddard reads a fairytale. Caroline will never forget her first party.

Drawings:

Each chapter has a drawing. One a bit bigger than the other. They are beautiful drawings drawn with a lot of feeling. There is a drawing of Caroline teaching Elsa new words, Mother in her beautiful new dress, The children around Mrs Stoddard reading aloud. Caroline and Elsa lining up for the spell bee. The girls watching the chess game in the city. Mother teaching the children to dance. Caroline looking around the store and Caroline looking at the stagecoach with all its passengers. 

Own opinion:

A booklet with well-known stories from the Caroline series. Beautiful drawings. Nice and easy to read. If you have the books of the Caroline series, this booklet is not really a must, but if you do not have the series, this is an interesting booklet.
