Samenvatting:

Deel 7 in de hoofdstukken-serie.
Een klein boekje met hoofdstukken uit de boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder met als thema de dagen dat er gewerkt werd voor het dagelijkse eten.
Er staan 9 hoofstukken in het boek.
1. Oogsttijd
Dit is het hoofdstuk uit het kleine huis in het grote bos, waarbij pa en oom Henry een dorsmachine hebben gehuurd en Laura en Mary gaan kijken.
2. Pa helpen
Laura helpt pa bij het werk in het kleine huis in het grote bos. Ze brengt hem houtsnippers voor het roken van het vlees. Mary en Laura helpen pa ook als hij zijn geweer laat.
3. Ma helpen
De meisjes kijken toe en helpen ma als ze boter en kaas maakt. Laura proeft van de wei, maar vindt het niet lekker. Mary en Laura zien hoe ma een mooi kleur geeft aan de boter.
4. Een huis bouwen
Deze keer komt het hoofdstuk uit Het kleine huis op de prairie. Het gaat over dat pa en ma samen beginnen aan de blokhut. Helaas komt ma's voet onder een boomstam terecht als hij wegglijdt en verzwikt ze hem flink.
5. Meneer Edwards
Pa ontmoet meneer Edwards en deze belooft om het huis verder mee te komen bouwen. Als hij komt leert hij Laura en Mary spugen en hij blijkt een gezellige man te zijn.
6. Een tuin aanplanten
Pa gaat aan het ploegen en hij heeft al een klein stuk voor ma geploegd. Ma en de meisjes gaan alles planten. Laura kijkt daarna vaak naar de groeiende tuin.
7. Opnieuw beginnen
Deze keer komt het hoofdstuk uit kleine huis aan de rivier. Ze hebben het huisje onder de grond schoongemaakt en Laura loopt met pa ergens heen. Pa vertelt dat hij een nog mooiere tuin gaat maken.
8. Melktijd
Pa heeft met zijn werk voor meneer Nelson een koe verdient en neemt deze mee naar huis. Laura blijkt zomaar te kunnen melken tot ma's verbazing.
9. Verhuizen
Dit hoofdstuk gaat over dat het gezin Ingalls verhuist naar het mooie, nieuwe huis van planken met ramen en een echte deur dat pa gebouwd heeft.

De hoofdstukken zijn niet één-op-één over genomen uit de boeken maar hier en daar een beetje aangepast.

Tekeningen:

Bij hoofdstuk 1 staat een groot plaatje waarop alle dorsers te zien zijn en twee kleine meisjes die toekijken. In hoofdstuk 2 is er een klein plaatje waarbij Laura met een schort vol houtsnippers naast pa staat die bij de holle boomstam zit waarin het vlees wordt gerookt. In het derde hoofdstuk kijken wee meisjes toe hoe ma de druppels uit een doek wringt boven een kom. In hoofdstuk 4 staat een groot plaatje van pa die een inkeping hakt in een boomstam en ma die de stam tegenhoudt op een al 4 stammen hoge muur. Het volgende plaatje is Meneer Edwards die heel ver spuugt en twee meisjes die toekijken. Bij hoofdstuk 6 staat een plaatje van ma die aan het schoffelen is en Laura en Mary die op hun knieën tussen de planten werken. Hoofdstuk 7 bevat een lief plaatje van pa met zijn bijl over zijn schouder en Laura aan de hand.
Het plaatje bij het een na laatste hoofdstuk is van Laura die aan het melken is en de rest van de familie kijkt toe. In hoofdstuk 9 staat weer een groot plaatje van twee meisjes die hand in hand kijken naar een mooi, groot huis van planken.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje over hoofdstukken uit de Lauraboeken. De teksten zijn dus bekend. De tekeningen zijn leuk en lieflijk. De tekeningen zijn wat meer “vrij” geïnterpreteerd en dat maakt ze erg mooi.

A small book with chapters from the books of Laura Ingalls Wilder with the theme of the days when people worked for the daily food.

There are 9 chapters in the book.

1. Harvest time

This is the chapter from the little house in the big forest, where Pa and Uncle Henry have rented a threshing machine and Laura and Mary go to have a look.

2. Helping Pa

Laura helps Pa with the work in the small house in the big forest. She brings him wood chips for smoking the meat. Mary and Laura also help Dad when he leaves his gun.

3. Helping Ma

The girls watch and help Ma as she makes butter and cheese. Laura tastes the whey, but doesn't like it. Mary and Laura see how Ma gives a nice color to the butter.

4. Building a house

This time the chapter is from The Little House on the Prairie. It's about Ma and Pa starting work on the log cabin together. Unfortunately, Ma's foot ends up under a tree trunk when he slips and she sprains it badly.

5. Mr. Edwards

Pa meets Mr. Edwards and he promises to help build the house. When he comes he teaches Laura and Mary to spit and he turns out to be a pleasant man.

6. Planting a garden

Pa goes to plow and he has already plowed a small area for Ma. Ma and the girls are going to plant everything. Laura then often looks at the growing garden.

7. Starting over

This time the chapter is from Little House at Plum Creek. They have cleaned the house underground and Laura is walking somewhere with Pa. Pa says that he is going to make an even more beautiful garden.

8. Milking time

Pa has earned a cow with his work for Mr. Nelson and takes it home. Laura turns out to be able to milk, much to Ma's surprise.

9. Moving in

This chapter is about the Ingalls family moving into the beautiful new board house with windows and a real door that Pa built.

The chapters have not been copied one-on-one from the books, but have been slightly adjusted here and there.

Drawings:

Chapter 1 has a large picture showing all the threshers and two little girls watching. In chapter 2 there is a small picture where Laura, wearing an apron full of wood chips, stands next to Pa who is sitting by the hollow tree trunk in which the meat is smoked. In the third chapter, two girls watch how Ma wrings the drops from a cloth over a bowl. In chapter 4 there is a large picture of Pa cutting a notch in a tree trunk and Ma holding the trunk against a wall that is already 4 trunks high. The next picture is Mr. Edwards spitting very far and two girls watching. Chapter 6 shows a picture of Ma hoeing and Laura and Mary working on their knees among the plants. Chapter 7 contains a sweet picture of Pa with his ax over his shoulder and Laura holding his hand.

The picture in the penultimate chapter is of Laura milking and the rest of the family watching. In chapter 9 there is another large picture of two girls holding hands looking at a beautiful, large house made of planks.

Own opinion:

A thin booklet about chapters from the Laura books. So the texts are known. The drawings are fun and lovely. The drawings have been interpreted more “freely” and that makes them very beautiful.
