Het tweede
deel van de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder, maar niet helemaal het
tweede deel, want dat is De Grote Hoeve. Laura Ingalls Wilder schreef eerst Het
kleine huis in het Grote Bos en daarna De Grove Hoeve en toen Het Kleine Huis
op de Prairie.
Het gezin
Ingalls verlaat het kleine huis in het bos en reist per huifkar naar de
prairie. Ze moeten eerst de grote, brede, bevroren rivier over steken met de
wagen. Ze kamperen op de prairie, waar Ma het eten kookt boven het kampvuur en
Pa zorgt voor de paarden. Hond Jack bewaakt de huifkar. Als ze een rivier
oversteken, stijgt het water heel snel. Pa springt in het water om de paarden
te helpen en leiden, maar op de andere oever ontdekken ze dat Jack is
verdwenen. Na een zoektocht komt Jack ’s avonds aan in het kamp. Pa vindt de
plek waar hij een huis wil bouwen op de prairie. Pa haalt hout voor een huis en
stal bij de rivier en soms mogen Mary en Laura mee. Pa rijdt rond op de prairie
en zorgt voor vlees in het kleine huis, terwijl Ma het huishouden regelt en
voor het eten zorgt. Ma helpt Pa met de bouw van het huis, maar als een zware
boomstam op haar enkel valt, ligt de bouw stil. Tot Pa een vrijgezel tegenkomt
die hem wil helpen: Meneer Edwards. Als de muren eenmaal staan, bouwt Pa,
geholpen door Laura, een deur, vloer, haard en dak. Pa komt grote wolven tegen
op de prairie. Het huis dat Pa gebouwd heeft, blijkt aan een pad van de
indianen te staan. Vaak zien de meisjes als ze buiten spelen indianen voorbij
rijden. En de indianen komen ook in het huis. Jack houdt niet van indianen en
moet aan de ketting omdat hij de indianen anders aanvalt. Pa maakt ook een put,
zodat Ma beschikking heeft over vers water. Pa gaat helpen met de cowboys die
het vee over de prairie naar de grote steden drijven. Op deze manier krijgt hij
een koe en een kalf. Er komt vuur in de haard en Laura weet Mary te redden die
met Carrie in de zware schommelstoel zit. Dan wordt de hele familie tegelijk
ziek met moeraskoorts. Ze worden geholpen door Dr Tann. Pa neemt daarna Mary en
Laura mee naar een indianenkamp, waar ze kralen vinden in het zand. Pa gaat
naar de stad. Hij is langer weg dan ze verwacht hadden vanwege het slechte
weer. Het wordt een bijzondere kerst, omdat er geen sneeuw is, maar Meneer
Edwards is de kadootjes voor Mary en Laura gaan ophalen in Independence. Hij
vertelt over zijn ontmoeting met de kerstman en Laura en Mary zijn heel blij
met de eigen beker en het snoep dat ze krijgen. Behalve de wolven ontdekt Pa
ook een poema in het bos bij de rivier, waarnaar hij op jacht gaat. Pa ontmoet
regelmatig indianen bij de rivier. Hij probeert met ze te praten en is meestal
vriendelijke tegen hen. Maar toch zijn de indianen het niet eens met de komst
van de kolonisten en in de nacht voeren ze hun oorlogsdans uit en slaken wilde
kreten, waardoor het gezin Ingalls niet kan slapen. Het eindigt met de indianen
uit elkaar gaan. Een lange rij rijdt langs het kleine huis. Hierna hoort Pa dat
de soldaten komen omdat ze niet op de juiste plaats zijn gaan wonen, ondanks de
glazen ramen, de net geplante moestuin, de nieuwe ploeg en het mooie kleine
huis, besluit Pa weer te gaan. De huifkar wordt vol geladen en Mary en Laura
worden in de wagen gezet en zien het kleine huis op de prairie langzaam
verdwijnen.
In het boek
is een aanvullend hoofdstuk over de “making of” door William Anderson. Dit gaat
over het ontstaan van het boek.
Tekeningen:
In dit boek
zijn alle tekeningen in kleur. De tekeningen van Garth Williams zijn passend
als altijd. Mooi, veelbetekenend en veelzeggend. Tekeningen zijn onder andere:
van de huifkar op de grote prairie, de huifkar die de rivier over steekt, het
kamp op de donkere prairie, ontbijt op de grote prairie, Pa die op de viool
speelt terwijl meneer Edwards danst, in indianenkamp met tipi’s, Pa legt het
wagenzeil op de blokhut als dak, Pa te paard tussen de grote wolven, Pa die de
paarden laat drinken bij de rivier, Mary op een boomstam bij de rivier en Laura
aan het pootje baden in de rivier, de familie bij de open haard met op de
schoorsteenmantel het herderinnetje, Laura en Mary op hun buik in het gras
kijkend naar een konijn, Pa loopt over de lege prairie, Ma bij de put, Pa die
omvalt tijdens het melken van de koe, Pa en de meisjes op de lege prairie, Ma
en Laura aan het bessen plukken bij de rivier, Laura met de waterlepel met Jack
naast zich, een brandende schoorsteen en Ma die de brand uit slaat, Pa op de
wagen in de regen, Jack in het gras, een indiaan rijdt langs het huis, een
indiaan op een paard die Jack onder schot neemt, koekharten en bekers, Pa in de
nacht met een lantaarn, Mary en Laura knuffelen Pa bij de tafel, Mary en Laura
met een haarband, Pa aan het ploegen, Mary en Laura met Jack tegen de muur van
het huis, terwijl Pa en Ma proberen de prairiebrand langs het huis te leiden,
Pa stuurt de paarden naar de stal, terwijl de ploeg langs het land staat en de
vuren branden, indianen rond een kampvuur aan het dansen, een indianenvrouw te
paard met een klein kindje in de mand, een rij indianen rijdt voorbij het
kleine huis waar de familie Ingalls voor staat te kijken, Pa neemt afscheid van
meneer Edwards en meneer Scott, het afgesloten huis en stal op de prairie en de
wegrijdende huifkar en het kamp op de donkere prairie.
Eigen
mening:
Veel
beschrijving over wat ze allemaal doen, wel mooi. Paar spannende momenten.
Omdat het het bekendste boek is vanwege de TV-serie, vind ik het wat minder
leuk. Veel beschrijvingen van de bouw van het huis, wat soms een beetje langdradig
is. Maar ook wel weer hele mooie stukken zoals over meneer Edwards en het
kerstfeest en de indianen.
In deze
Engelse versie staan net wat meer tekeningen dan in de Nederlandse versie. Dat
is leuk. Dat de tekeningen in kleur zijn, is wel heel mooi. En het is een mooie
uitgave van het boek. Het boek is ooit nat geworden en daardoor zijn de
bladzijden niet meer helemaal glad.

Resume:
The
second part of the series, written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, but not quite the
second part, because that is Farmer Boy. Laura Ingalls Wilder first wrote The
Little House in the Big Woods and then Farmer Boy and then The Little House on
the Prairie.
The
Ingalls family leaves the small house in the woods and travels by covered wagon
to the prairie. They first have to cross the big, wide, frozen river by wagon.
They camp on the prairie, where Ma cooks food over the campfire and Pa takes
care of the horses. Dog Jack guards the covered wagon. When they cross a river,
the water rises very quickly. Pa jumps into the water to help and guide the
horses, but on the other bank they discover that Jack has disappeared. After a
search, Jack arrives at the camp in the evening. Pa finds the place where he
wants to build a house on the prairie. Pa gets wood for a house and stable by
the river and sometimes Mary and Laura are allowed to come along. Pa rides
around on the prairie and provides meat in the little house, while Ma manages
the house and provides food. Ma helps Pa build the house, but when a heavy tree
trunk falls on her ankle, construction comes to a standstill. Until Pa meets a
bachelor who wants to help him: Mr. Edwards. Once the walls are up, Pa, helped
by Laura, builds a door, floor, fireplace and roof. Pa encounters big wolves on
the prairie. The house that Pa built turns out to be on an Indian path. The
girls often see Indians driving by when they are playing outside. And the
Indians also come into the house. Jack doesn't like Indians and has to be
chained because otherwise he will attack the Indians. Pa also makes a well, so
that Ma has access to fresh water. Pa goes to help with the cowboys who drive
the cattle across the prairie to the big cities. In this way he gets a cow and
a calf. A fire starts in the fireplace and Laura manages to save Mary who is
sitting in the heavy rocking chair with Carrie. Then the whole family falls ill
with fever at the same time. They are helped by Dr Tann. Pa then takes Mary and
Laura to an Indian camp, where they find beads in the sand. Pa goes to town. He
is gone longer than they expected due to the bad weather. It will be a special
Christmas because there is no snow, but Mr. Edwards has gone to pick up the
presents for Mary and Laura in Independence. He talks about his meeting with
Santa Claus and Laura and Mary are very happy with their own cup and the candy
they receive. In addition to the wolves, Pa also discovers a panther in the
forest near the river, which he goes hunting for. Pa regularly meets Indians at
the river. He tries to talk to them and is usually friendly to them. But still
the Indians do not agree with the arrival of the colonists and at night they
perform their war dance and let out wild cries, which prevents the Ingalls
family from sleeping. It ends with the Indians parting ways. A long line passes
the small house. After this, Pa hears that the soldiers are coming because they
did not live in the right place, despite the glass windows, the newly planted vegetable
garden, the new plow and the beautiful little house, Pa decides to go again.
The covered wagon is loaded and Mary and Laura are put in the wagon and watch
the little house on the prairie slowly disappear.
The book
has an additional chapter on the “making of” by William Anderson. This is about
the origin of the book.
Drawings:
In this
book all drawings are in color. Garth Williams's drawings are as appropriate as
ever. Beautiful, significant and meaningful. Drawings include: of the covered
wagon on the great prairie, the covered wagon crossing the river, the camp on
the dark prairie, breakfast on the great prairie, Pa playing the fiddle while
Mr. Edwards dances, in Indian camp with tepees, Pa puts the wagon tarpaulin on
the log cabin as a roof, Pa on horseback among the big wolves, Pa letting the
horses drink at the river, Mary on a tree trunk by the river and Laura bathing
in the river, the family at the open fireplace with the shepherdess on the
mantelpiece, Laura and Mary on their bellies in the grass looking at a rabbit,
Pa walking across the empty prairie, Ma at the well, Pa falling over while
milking the cow, Pa and the girls on the empty prairie, Ma and Laura picking
berries by the river, Laura with the water spoon with Jack next to her, a
burning chimney and Ma putting out the fire, Pa on the wagon in the rain, Jack
in the grass, an Indian driving past the house, an Indian on a horse who shoots
Jack, cookie hearts and cups, Pa at night with a lantern, Mary and Laura
hugging Pa at the table, Mary and Laura with a headband, Pa ploughing, Mary and
Laura with Jack against the wall of the house, while Ma and Pa try to direct
the prairie fire past the house, Pa sends the horses to the stable, while the
plow stands along the field and the fires are burning, Indians are dancing
around a campfire , an Indian woman on horseback with a small child in the
basket, a line of Indians rides past the small house in front of which the
Ingalls family stands watching, Pa says goodbye to Mr. Edwards and Mr. Scott,
the closed house and stable on the prairie and the moving covered wagon and the
camp on the dark prairie.
Own
opinion:
Lots of
description about what they do, which is nice. Some exciting moments. Because
it is the most famous book because of the TV series, I like it a little less.
Many descriptions of the construction of the house, which is sometimes a bit
long-winded. But also very beautiful pieces such as about Mr. Edwards and
Christmas and the Indians.
This
English version has a few more drawings than the Dutch version. That's nice. The
fact that the drawings are in color is very nice. And it is a beautiful edition
of the book. The book got wet at some point and as a result the pages are no
longer completely smooth.
