Samenvatting:

Dit is het Engelse deel 1 van de Rose-serie. Het boek begint met dat de familie Wilder nog in De Smet woont. Rose brengt veel tijd door bij haar opa en oma, omdat haar ouders werken. Ze vindt het fijn bij haar opa en oma. Deze avond hebben papa en mama een verrassing als ze thuiskomen. Het blijkt dat het gezin Wilder gaat verhuizen naar de staat Missouri in een huifkar. Eerst lijkt het Rose wel leuk, tot ze begrijpt dat opa en oma dan achterblijven. Uiteindelijk nemen ze afscheid van de familie Ingalls, waarbij Pa tot laat in de nacht viool speelt en het afscheid zwaar valt. Het gezin Wilder reist samen met de familie Cooley over de wegen naar Missouri. Een deel van deze reis is beschreven in “onderweg”. Ze maken van alles mee, zoals de overtocht over de rivier de Missouri, het bezoek van de Russen in hun kamp, een ritje bij Paul en George op hun wagen en later ruzie tussen Rose en Paul. Uiteindelijk komen ze aan in Mansfield. Daar gaat Almanzo op zoek naar een boerderij, terwijl Laura en Rose alles rond het kamp doen. Hier worden Paul en Rose weer vrienden. Uiteindelijk vindt Almanzo een mooi stuk grond, als Almanzo en Laura het willen gaan kopen, blijkt het biljet van 100 dollar kwijt te zijn. Gelukkig weet Rose het te vinden en kan de boerderij worden gekocht. Er staat alleen een kleine blokhut op en verder veel hout en stenen en honderden ingegraven appelboompjes. Het gezin gaat aan het werk om zoveel mogelijk van de boerderij te maken. Almanzo gaat, samen met een gehuurde hulp, aan het werk om het hout te hakken. Laura en Rose maken de blokhut schoon en zetten alles er in. Er is water in de buurt. Later worden er een kippenhok en een stal gebouwd. Voor de stal komen alle mensen uit de omgeving om te helpen. Rose ontmoet haar vriendinnetje Alva. Ze ontdekt het bos, de dieren, alles wat er groeit, de grot. Verder helpt ze hard mee op de boerderij. Langzaam lijkt de boerderij van de grond te komen met al hun harde werk. Almanzo maakt een raam in de blokhut, ze eten konijn die Rose heeft gevangen.

Er staan 32 hoofdstukken in dit boek.

Tekeningen:

Er staan een klein aantal tekeningen in het boek, vooral aan het begin van de hoofdstukken. Het zijn de wat vage tekeningen van deze illustrator. Beetje abstract, al zijn in dit boek sommige tekeningen ook wel weer heel mooi.

Er is een tekening van een rij huifkarren voor de pont over de rivier, waarbij een storm op komst is. Boven hoofdstuk 1 staat een mooie, duidelijke tekening van een stoel voor een raam bij een tafel met lamp. Hoofdstuk 2 begint met een viool in vioolkist. Vervolgens staat bij het begin van de hoofstukken een leeg land met boerderij en koeien, de huifkarren van Cooley en Wilder op een plek op de prairie, een houtkachel, een haan bij opkomende zon, konijnen op de prairie, een boek en beker en horloge bij elkaar, was aan de waslijn, maïsveld, telegraafpalen, een grote stad met een tram en veel mensen, een houten hek, permanente kampeerplek met wagens, stoelen, tafel, fornuis, een hond, lege borden, het schrijfkistje op z’n kant, zak appels, een blokhut in het bos, emmer en poetslap, klok en broodschaal op de schoorsteenmantel, indeling van de blokhut bij de haard, muizenhol, ingegraven appelboompjes, naaikistje, kippen op een boomtak, raampje met uitzicht, hond bij een holle boomstam, een eg, een grot, een tafel vol eten, een groep mensen die samen een stal bouwt en een zadel aan de muur.

Eigen mening:

Het vervolg op de boeken van Laura. Dit gaat meer over Rose. Ook vertelt het nog een stuk over onderweg. Leuk om verder te lezen hoe het met Laura en Almanzo gaat, maar wel echt een andere schrijfstijl dan die van Laura Ingalls.

De tekeningen zijn redelijk mooi, niet zo warm als de tekeningen van Garth Williams of Reneé Graef, maar wel redelijk leuk. De grote tekeningen zijn meer abstract.

This is the English part 1 of the Rose series. The book starts with the Wilder family still living in De Smet. Rose spends a lot of time with her grandparents, because her parents work. She likes it with her grandparents. This evening, mom and dad have a surprise when they get home. It turns out that the Wilder family is moving to the state of Missouri in a covered wagon. At first it seems fun to Rose, until she understands that grandpa and grandma will be left behind. Finally they say goodbye to the Ingalls family, with Pa playing the violin late into the night and the farewell is difficult. The Wilder family travels the roads to Missouri together with the Cooley family. Part of this journey is described in “on the way home”. They experience many things, such as the crossing of the Missouri River, the visit of the Russians to their camp, a ride with Paul and George on their wagon and later an argument between Rose and Paul. Finally they arrive in Mansfield. There Almanzo goes looking for a farm, while Laura and Rose do everything around the camp. Here Paul and Rose become friends again. Eventually Almanzo finds a nice piece of land, when Almanzo and Laura want to buy it, the $100 bill turns out to be lost. Fortunately, Rose manages to find it and the farm can be purchased. There is only a small log cabin and a lot of wood and stones and hundreds of buried apple trees. The family goes to work to make as much of the farm as possible. Almanzo, together with a hired helper, goes to work chopping the wood. Laura and Rose clean the cabin and put everything in it. There is water nearby. Later a chicken coop and a stable are built. All the people from the area come to the stable to help. Rose meets her friend Alva. She discovers the forest, the animals, everything that grows there, the cave. She also helps out on the farm. Slowly the farm seems to be getting off the ground with all their hard work. Almanzo opens a window in the cabin, they eat rabbit that Rose has caught.

There are 32 chapters in this book.

Drawings:

There are a small number of drawings in the book, especially at the beginning of the chapters. These are the somewhat vague drawings of this illustrator. A bit abstract, although some of the drawings in this book are very beautiful.

There is a drawing of a row of covered wagons in front of the ferry across the river, with a storm approaching. Above chapter 1 there is a beautiful, clear drawing of a chair in front of a window near a table with a lamp. Chapter 2 begins with a violin in a violin case. Then at the beginning of the chapters there is an empty field with a farm and cows, Cooley and Wilder's covered wagons on a spot on the prairie, a wood stove, a rooster at the rising sun, rabbits on the prairie, a book and cup and watch. each other, laundry on the washing line, corn field, telegraph poles, a big city with a tram and many people, a wooden fence, permanent camping spot with wagons, chairs, table, stove, a dog, empty plates, the writing box on its side, bag of apples, a log cabin in the woods, bucket and cleaning rag, clock and bread bowl on the mantelpiece, layout of the log cabin near the fireplace, mouse hole, buried apple trees, sewing box, chickens on a tree branch, window with a view, dog near a hollow tree trunk, a harrow, a cave, a table full of food, a group of people building a stable together and a saddle on the wall.

Own opinion:

The sequel to Laura's books. This is more about Rose. It also tells a bit about the journey. Nice to read more about how Laura and Almanzo are doing, but a really different writing style than that of Laura Ingalls.

The drawings are quite nice, not as warm as the drawings of Garth Williams or Reneé Graef, but still quite nice. The large drawings are more abstract.

This story has also been translated into Dutch. There are some beautiful parts in the book. But it is less beautiful than the real Laura series
