Een dun boekje over een reis langs sites van Laura Ingalls Wilder. Er is een voorwoord van de schrijver en een introductie. Dan volgen 7 hoofdstukken van een site. Het boekje eindigt met een samenvatting en wat tips en websites voor informatie.

De bezochte sites zijn:

1.    Pepin, Wisonsin

2.    Burr Oak, Iowa

3.    Spring Valley, Minnesota

4.    Walnut Grove, Minnesota

5.    De Smet, South Dakota

6.    Independence, Kansas

7.    Mansfield, Missouri

Elk hoofdstukje is hetzelfde opgebouwd: eerst een kort stukje met de context in het verhaal van Laura Ingalls Wilder, dan de attacties die te maken hebben met Laura Ingalls Wilder en haar familie. Dan andere locale attracties zoals parken ed en dan nog wat reistips; zoals waar je kunt eten of winkelen.

Helaas klopt het stukje over Spring Valley niet. Er staat dat Pa en Ma Ingalls er gewoond hebben na het overlijden van Grace, maar dat is natuurlijk niet. De familie Wilder heeft in Spring Valley gewoond en Almanzo en Laura en Rose hebben er kortdurend gewoond na de ellende van de eerste prairiejaren.

Tekeningen:

De voorkant van het boekje is mooi, met een stel dat kijkt naar de ondergaande zon terwijl ze staan bij een huifkar. Verder staan er foto’s in het boek. Omdat het boekje is geschreven door iemand persoonlijk, zijn de foto’s familiefotos. Van de vrouw van de schrijver die verrast is als blijkt dat ze aan de reis beginnen. Van de schrijver met Dean Butler en Alison Arngrim voor zijn bedrijk in De Smet. Verder een kaartje en een foto voor het museum in Pepin en de blokhut in Pepin. Een foto voor het hotel in Burr Oak en het hele gezin op de foto bij de huifkar in Burr Oak. Een foto van de kerk in Spring Valley en van het museum in Walnut Grove. En natuurlijk van het bord bij de dugout. Een foto van een vlag in De Smet en het bord bij de homestead, het landmetershuis en de grafsteen van de overleden zoon van Almanzo en Laura. Een foto voor de blokhut in Kansas en foto’s van Mansfield, natuurlijk ook van de boerderij en van het rockhouse. Verder nog een foto dat de schrijver de buste van Laura een kus geeft en een foto van de graven in Mansfield. En foto’s van een grot in Mansfield. Het boekje eindigt met een foto-collage van de Ingalls familie en nog een foto van verschillende huizen.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje, gekocht via Amazon in 2024, toen het net uit was. Op zich wel een geinig boekje om de reis te plannen, al is de informatie wat globaal.

Erg jammer dat de foto’s niet in kleur zijn.

Erg jammer dat het stukje over Spring Valley totaal niet klopt, terwijl je dat in deze tijd toch na kunt kijken via internet. Maar verder is de opzet wel geinig. Geen must have.

Summary:

Each chapter is structured the same: first a short piece with the context in the story of Laura Ingalls Wilder, then the attractions that have to do with Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family. Then other local attractions such as parks etc. and then some travel tips; such as where to eat or shop.

Unfortunately, the piece about Spring Valley is incorrect. It says that Pa and Ma Ingalls lived there after Grace died, but of course that is not true. The Wilder family lived in Spring Valley and Almanzo and Laura and Rose lived there for a short time after the misery of the first prairie years.

Drawings:

The front of the book is beautiful, with a couple looking at the sundown while standing by a covered wagon. There are also photos in the book. Because the book was written by someone personally, the photos are family photos. Of the writer's wife who is surprised when it turns out that they are starting the journey. Of the writer with Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim in front of his business in De Smet. Also a card and a photo in front of the museum in Pepin and the log cabin in Pepin. A photo befor the hotel in Burr Oak and the whole family in the photo by the covered wagon in Burr Oak. A photo of the church in Spring Valley and of the museum in Walnut Grove. And of course of the sign at the dugout. A photo of a flag in De Smet and the sign at the homestead, the surveyor's house and the gravestone of the deceased son of Almanzo and Laura. A photo of the log cabin in Kansas and photos of Mansfield, of course also of the farm and the rock house. Also a photo of the writer kissing Laura's bust and a photo of the graves in Mansfield. And photos of a cave in Mansfield. The book ends with a photo collage of the Ingalls family and another photo of various houses.

Own opinion:

A thin book, bought via Amazon in 2024, when it had just been released. In itself a nice book to plan the trip, although the information is a bit global.

Too bad the photos are not in color.

Too bad the part about Spring Valley is completely wrong, while you can check that on the internet these days. But otherwise the layout is nice. Not a must have.
