Samenvatting:

Een verzameling artikelen over verschillende onderwerpen. Zo vertelt Irene Smith over het leven van Laura Ingalls en het schrijven van de boeken. Ze haalt ook stukken uit de boeken aan en probeert deze te verklaren. Verder vertelt Garth Williams over het ontstaan van zijn tekeningen. Hoe hij door het land reisde om de plaatsen van het kleine huis te zien en zelf ook olielampen vulde. Hij ontmoette uiteindelijk ook Laura en Almanzo in hun huis in Missouri. Dan komt er een kort artikeltje door Virginia Kirkus die het manuscript van het kleine huis moest beoordelen. Ze wist dat het moeilijk zou zijn voor Harper’s om een kinderboek uit te brengen gedurende de depressie, maar zodra ze het verhaal begon te lezen, werd ze er door geraakt. Ze besloot te zorgen dat Harper's het uit zou geven. Het laatste artikel gaat over kerstfeesten in het Kleine Huis. Het boekje eindigt met een brief van Laura aan iedereen waarin ze vertelt over het leven tijdens de 4 prairiejaren en dat ze daarna met Almanzo en Rose een huis en boerderij heeft opgebouwd in Missouri. Als allerlaatste staat het recept voor kruidenkoek van Laura genoteerd.

Tekeningen:

Er staan tekeningen en foto's in het boekje. Een foto van het interieur van het huis in Mansfield, de stoel bij de haard, een foto van Laura voor het huis in Mansfield. Foto's van Garth Williams en van Almanzo voor het huis en Laura in haar tuin aan het bonen plukken. Foto's van Plum Creek en de Verdigiris-rivier in Kansas. En foto's van de prairieclaim en het grote moeras, gemaakt door Garth Williams in 1947. En nog foto's van Garth Williams zelf. In het begin van het boekje staan ook foto's van de familie Ingalls en Almanzo, de bekende foto's. Verder staan er een aantal tekeningen van Garth Williams in het boek, 2 advertenties voor de boeken, een tekening van Helen Sewell.

Eigen mening:

Een dun, niet al te bijzonder boekje. Maar wel interessant.

Summary:

A collection of articles on various topics. Irene Smith, for example, discusses Laura Ingalls' life and the writing of the books. She also quotes passages from the books and attempts to explain them. Garth Williams also discusses the origins of his drawings, how he traveled the country to visit the locations of the Little House and even filled oil lamps himself. He eventually met Laura and Almanzo at their home in Missouri. Then comes a short article by Virginia Kirkus, who reviewed the manuscript of the Little House. She knew it would be difficult for Harper's to publish a children's book during the Depression, but once she began reading the story, she was captivated. She decided to have Harper's publish it. The final article is about Christmases at the Little House. The book ends with a letter from Laura to everyone in which she recounts life during the four years on the prairie and how she and Almanzo and Rose subsequently built a house and farm in Missouri. Last but not least, Laura's recipe for gingerbread is noted.

Drawings:

The booklet contains drawings and photographs. A photo of the interior of the Mansfield house, the chair by the fireplace, a photo of Laura in front of the Mansfield house. Photos of Garth Williams and Almanzo in front of the house and Laura in her garden picking beans. Photos of Plum Creek and the Verdigiris River in Kansas. And photos of the prairie claim and the great swamp, taken by Garth Williams in 1947. And more photos by Garth Williams himself. At the beginning of the booklet are also photos of the Ingalls family and Almanzo, the well-known photos. The book also contains several drawings by Garth Williams, two advertisements for the books, and a drawing by Helen Sewell.

My own opinion:

A slim, not particularly remarkable book. But interesting nonetheless.
