Dit boek is een verzamelbundel van drie boeken van Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Het eerste boek is:
On The Way home
Het dagboek van de reis van Zuid Dakota naar Mansfield, Missouri in 1894. In Nederland bekend als "onderweg". Hier heeft Rose Wilder Lane ook een voorwoord bij geschreven. Het is letterlijk een kopie van "onderweg" met dezelfde foto's en precies hetzelfde verhaal. Laura hield tijdens de reis een klein dagboekje bij. Daarin vermeldde ze de temperatuur en hoe de gewassen erbij stonden waar ze voorbij kwamen. Verder vertelde ze leuke anekdotes, zoals dat ze gingen zwemmen op zondag, dat ze een Russische familie tegenkwamen en daar brood van kregen.

De tekst van Laura begint op 17 juli 1894 en eindigt op 30 augustus 1894. Rose heeft een voor- en nawoord geschreven. Het voorwoord gaat over het afscheid in De Smet van de familie en over hoe de wagen er uit zag. Laura’s dagboek gaat over hoe laat ze vertrekken en welke plaatsen ze allemaal langs komen. Ze reizen samen met de familie Cooley. Laura vertelt over de verschillende kampeerplaatsen. Dan komt deel 3, het laatste gedeelte wat Rose weer heeft geschreven. De zoektocht naar land, dan de ontdekking dat het 100 dollar biljet kwijt is en uiteindelijk dat het weer wordt gevonden en dat ze Rocky Ridge Farm kopen. Rose vertelt over dat ze naar het land gaan en over haar eerste blik op Mansfield en het land. Over de blokhut en dan wat meer algemeen over de eerste periode die ze leven in Mansfield.

Het tweede boek :
West From Home

Brieven van Laura Ingalls Wilder aan Almanzo over haar reis naar San Francisco/ Rose. Rose was al jaren weg uit Mansfield en al jaren niet meer in de gelegenheid geweest om haar ouders te zien. Ze wilde dat haar ouders haar kwamen bezoeken en misschien zelfs wel land kochten in Californië. Omdat Almanzo en Laura niet meer van plan waren om te verhuizen en omdat er iemand achter moest blijven voor de boerderij, besloot alleen Laura haar dochter op te gaan zoeken. Ze beloofde Almanzo te schrijven over alles wat ze meemaakte. In San Francisco was de Wereld-tentoonstelling aan de gang en Rose en Gillette (haar man, ze was toen nog getrouwd) namen Laura daar regelmatig mee naar toe. Ze zag veel verschillende gebouwen, groot vuurwerk. Laura maakte kennis met de mensen van de krant waar Rose voor werkte en Rose hielp Laura met het schrijven van artikelen voor haar maandblad. Laura stond met haar voeten in de Atlantische Oceaan. Verder vertelde ze levendig over de dingen die ze zag en meemaakte.

De eerste brief van Laura aan Almanzo is van 21 augustus 1915. De laatste brief dateert van 22 oktober 1915. Laura vertelt echt veel in de brieven. Het eindigt met enkele recepten.

Het derde boek is:
The Road Back

Het voorwoord is van Abigail MacBride, dochter van Roger Lea MacBride.

Het verslag begint op 6 juni 1931 en eindigt 29 juni 1931.
Dit verslag is nooit ergens anders gepubliceerd dan in dit boek en daarom is het boek interessant. Op leeftijd en eindelijk toe aan wat rust, besloten Laura en Almanzo om de reis terug naar South Dakota te maken die ze bijna 40 jaar eerder met de huifkar waren gegaan. Deze keer zou het een reis met de auto worden. Laura en Almanzo reizen terug en ontmoeten mensen uit het verleden, waarmee ze herinneringen ophalen. Ook gaan ze op bezoek bij Grace en Carrie. Ze overnachten onderweg bij bekenden of in blokhutten. Laura houdt bij wat ze per dag uitgeven, waar ze rijden, hoe de landbouw gaat en verder nog leuke dingen die ze meemaken. Hond Nero mag ook mee op de reis en wordt regelmatig in het verslag benoemd.

Tekeningen:

In het boek zijn foto's verwerkt. Eigenlijk geen nieuwe, onbekende foto's en vooral ook algemene plaatjes van verschillende bezienswaardigheden, zoals van de Wereldtentoonstelling in 1915 als van de presidendiële hoofden die zijn uitgehouwen in steen in Dakota. In "on the way home" staan dezelfde foto's als in het Nederlandse boek "onderweg". Onder elke foto staat een onderschrift. De foto’s die te zien zijn in onderweg zijn van Almanzo, Laura en Rose. Het huis op Rocky Ridge en het land Rocky Ridge in  1910 en1962. Rose met Spookendyke, Laura in het ravijn, Almanzo voor de blokhut met paarden, de lessenaar open en dicht, Mansfield, Missouri, Ford Scott, Kansas, Marysville, Kansas, the Wooden bridge over de Platte River, Schuyler, Nebraska en een kaartje van de reis. Ook foto’s van het huis in De Smet en De Smet zelf, Laura, Almanzo en Rose als 2-jarige en met haar klas in 1894.

West From Home bevat foto’s van Laura in 1917 en Almanzo met paarden op het veld. Rose in 1916. Verder van San Fransciso Ocean beach in 1915, het huis in Vallejo Street waar Rose en Gillette wonen in 1915 en de achterkant van het huis. Foto’s van de world faire en China Town. Een streetcar, waar Laura vanaf viel en Market Street. En een foto van Gillette en Laura.

De foto’s in The Road Back zijn onder andere: Laura, Almanzo en hond Nero. Rose in de auto Isabelle. Een oude foto van De Smet. Een foto van Grace en haar man Nate Dow. Een foto van de homestead in 1947, gemaakt door Garth Williams. Carrie en een van Carrie en haar man. Een foto van de werkzaamheden op de rotsen van Mount Rushmore.

 

Eigen mening:

Mooi boek, wel jammer dat onderweg (On the Way Home) er ook in staat, want die had ik al in het Nederlands en Engels. Maar de brieven uit San Fransciso en met name ook de reis door Dakota zijn interessant. En nog van Laura’s hand. Het vertelt allemaal redelijk over het alledaagse leven wat ze tijdens de reis meemaken. Dat maakt het ook wel weer heel interessant om te lezen. Als je On the Way Home nog niet hebt, dan is dit een goed boek om alles ineens te hebben.

This book is a collection of three books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

 

The first book is:

On The Way home

The journal of the journey from South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri in 1894. Known in the Netherlands as "Onderweg". Rose Wilder Lane has also written a foreword to this. It is literally a copy of "on the way home" with the same photos and exactly the same story. Laura kept a small diary during the trip. In it she mentioned the temperature and the condition of the crops they passed. She also told nice anecdotes, such as that they went swimming on Sunday, that they met a Russian family and received bread from them.

Laura's text begins on July 17, 1894 and ends on August 30, 1894. Rose has written a foreword and afterword. The foreword is about saying goodbye to the family in De Smet and about what the car looked like. Laura's diary is about what time they leave and which places they pass by. They travel with the Cooley family. Laura tells about the different camping pitches. Then comes part 3, the last part Rose wrote again. The search for land, then the discovery that the $100 bill has been lost, and finally it is found again and they buy Rocky Ridge Farm. Rose talks about them going to the country and about her first look at Mansfield and the country place. About the log cabin and then more generally about the first period they live in Mansfield.

 

The second book:

West From Home

The foreword is written by Roger Lea MacBride.

Letters from Laura Ingalls Wilder to Almanzo about her trip to San Francisco/Rose. Rose had been away from Mansfield for years and hadn't been able to see her parents for years. She wanted her parents to come visit her and maybe even buy land in California. Because Almanzo and Laura were no longer planning to move and because someone had to stay behind for the farm, only Laura decided to visit her daughter. She promised to write Almanzo about everything she experienced. In San Francisco the World's Fair was going on and Rose and Gillette (her husband, she was still married at the time) regularly took Laura there. She saw many different buildings, big fireworks. Laura met the people at the newspaper Rose worked for and Rose helped Laura write articles for her monthly magazine. Laura stood with her feet in the Atlantic Ocean. She also spoke vividly about the things she saw and experienced.

The first letter from Laura to Almanzo is dated August 21, 1915. The last letter is dated October 22, 1915. Laura really tells a lot in the letters. It ends with some recipes.

 

The third book is:

The RoadBack

Laura Ingalls Wilder's record of the Journey back to De Smet, South Dakota 1931

The foreword is by Abigail MacBride, daughter of Roger Lea MacBride.

The record begins June 6, 1931 and ends June 29, 1931.

This account has never been published anywhere else other than in this book, which is why the book is interesting. Aging and finally in need of some rest, Laura and Almanzo decided to take the covered wagon trip back to South Dakota they had taken nearly 40 years earlier. This time it would be a trip by car. Laura and Almanzo travel back and meet people from the past, reminiscing about them. They also visit Grace and Carrie. They spend the night with acquaintances or in log cabins along the way. Laura keeps track of what they spend each day, where they drive, how farming is going and other fun things they experience. Dog Nero is also allowed on the trip and is regularly mentioned in the report.

 

Drawings:

Photos are included in the book. Actually no new, unknown photos and especially general pictures of various sights, such as the World's Fair in 1915 and the presidential heads that are carved in stone in Dakota. In "on the way home" are the same pictures as in the Dutch book "Onderweg". There is a caption under each photo. The photos that can be seen in “on the way home”are of Almanzo, Laura and Rose. The house on Rocky Ridge and the Rocky Ridge land in 1910 and 1962. Rose with Spookendyke, Laura in the ravin, Almanzo in front of the log cabin with horses, the lectern open and closed, Mansfield, Missouri, Ford Scott, Kansas, Marysville, Kansas, the Wooden bridge over the Platte River, Schuyler, Nebraska and a map of the journey. Also photos of the house in De Smet and De Smet itself, Laura, Almanzo and Rose as a 2-year-old and with her class in 1894.

West From Home contains photos of Laura in 1917 and Almanzo with horses in the field. Rose in 1916. Further from San Fransciso Ocean beach in 1915, the house on Vallejo Street where Rose and Gillette live in 1915 and the back of the house. Pictures of the world faire and China Town. A street car, where Laura fell off and Market Street. And a picture of Gillette and Laura.

The photos in The Road Back include: Laura, Almanzo and dog Nero. Rose in the car Isabelle. An old photo of De Smet. A photo of Grace and her husband Nate Dow. A photo of the homestead in 1947 taken by Garth Williams. Carrie and one of Carrie and her husband. A photo of the work on the rocks of Mount Rushmore.

 

Own opinion:

Nice book, but it's a pity that it also say contains “on the way home”, because I already had it in Dutch and English. But the letters from San Francisco and especially the journey through Dakota are interesting. And from Laura's hand. It all tells reasonably about the everyday life they experience during the trip. That also makes it very interesting to read. If you don't have On the Way Home yet, this is a good book to have it all at once.
