Het derde boek van de serie, geschreven door Laura Ingalls Wilder.

In dit deel komt de huifkar aan bij een huis in de grond. Hoewel het een kleine woning is, weet Ma, met hulp van Laura en Mary, het huis gezellig te maken. De meisjes spelen veel bij de rivier, die voor hun huis loopt. Pa bewerkt het land en Ma regelt het huishouden. Laura en Mary maken van alles mee; ze spelen in de hooiberg, krijgen paarden met kerst, gaan zwemmen met Pa en gaan voor het eerst naar school. Op school ontmoet Laura Nellie Oleson. Pa bouwt een mooi nieuw huis, maar voor hij de oogst binnen kan halen, komt er een grote wolk die bestaat uit sprinkhanen. De sprinkhanen eten alles op wat groen is. Pa moet weg om geld te verdienen. Ma en de meisjes proberen zo goed als het gaat alles te doen. Ze overleven een prairiebrand en vuurbollen. Als Pa weer thuis is, is het feest. Dan gaat Pa naar de stad, maar verdwaalt in een sneeuwstorm. Het zijn spannende dagen, maar gelukkig komt Pa weer veilig thuis.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen zijn weer van Garth Williams en dat zijn gewoon hele lieve, levende tekeningen, waarbij je een goed beeld krijgt van het verhaal.

De eerste tekening is vaneen meisje dat in een rivier staat. De volgende tekening is van de huifkar die aankomt bij een huis in de grond. Daarna een tekening van Laura en Mary die bij de deur van het huis staan en Ma die over het pad aan komt met Carrie op de arm. De volgende tekening is van Laura met een stok in haar hand tegenover een plat, behaard dier tussen het gras. Dan een plaatje van Laura die een koe melkt in een beker, terwijl Pa, Ma, Mary en Carrie toekijken. Dan de tekening van de os op het dak, met Laura die er achteraan rent en Jack die voor de os springt en Ma die haastig uit het huis komt. De volgende tekening is van Laura en Mary die spelen op de hooiberg. Dan een plaatje van de wagen op hol met Ma en Carrie in de bak en Pa die rent langs de ossen en Laura en Mary die angstig toekijken op het dak van het huis. Dan een tekening van Laura en Mary in omslagdoeken die twee paarden aaien. Een tekening van Laura die aan een houten brug hangt in het snelstromende water, een plaatje van een kachel en Pa en Laura met een visval onder een waterval. Dan een tekening van Laura en Mary die op een school af lopen waar kinderen voor staan. Een tekening van Nellie Oleson die Laura aan haar vlechten trekt. Een tekening van Nellie met haar mooie pop, die ze weg houdt van Laura, terwijl andere kinderen toekijken en met speelgoed spelen. Dan een tekening van een groepje kinderen en een vrouw die samen zingen. Dan de wolk springhanen die neerkomt, terwijl pa mest rondom het veld gooit, dat Ma aansteekt om rook te creëren. Dan een plaatje van Ma, Mary, Carrie en Laura en Jack naast het huis met uitzicht op een wolk met regen die valt op de prairie. Een plaatje van Laura in een omslagdoek die pop Charlotte ziet liggen in een waterplas. Dan een tekening van een kerstboom in de kerk met Laura, Mary, Ma en Pa op de eerste rij. Het volgende plaatje is van Ma, Mary en Laura die vechten tegen prairievuur bij de hooibergen. Vervolgens een plaatje van Carrie die de deur open maakt, terwijl Laura met haar handen vol hout binnen komt terwijl buiten een sneeuwstorm woedt. Het huis ligt vol houtblokken. Een tekening van Ma die door de sneeuw, zich vasthoudend aan een touw, loopt terwijl Laura door het raam toekijkt. De laatste tekening is van Pa die in een hol, terwijl het sneeuwt, het kerstsnoep opeet.

Eigen mening:

Een mooi boek, al meer een verhaal en minder beschrijving. Wel krijgen ze meer te maken met moeilijkheden. En toch is het een lief boek.

In this part the covered wagon arrives at a house in the ground. Although it is a small house, Ma, with the help of Laura and Mary, knows how to make the house cozy. The girls play a lot near the river that runs in front of their house. Pa works the land and Ma takes care of the household. Laura and Mary experience everything; they play in the haystack, get horses for Christmas, go swimming with Pa and go to school for the first time. At school, Laura meets Nellie Oleson. Pa builds a nice new house, but before he can harvest the harvest, a large cloud of locusts appears. The locusts eat everything that is green. Pa has to leave to earn money. Ma and the girls try to do everything as best as they can. They survive a prairie fire and fireballs. When Pa comes home again, it's a party. Then Pa goes to town, but gets lost in a snowstorm. These are exciting days, but fortunately Pa returns home safely.

Drawings:

The drawings are again by Garth Williams and they are just very sweet, living drawings, which give you a good idea of the story.

The first drawing is of a girl standing in a river. The next drawing is of the covered wagon arriving at a house in the ground. Then a drawing of Laura and Mary standing at the door of the house and Ma coming down the path with Carrie in her arm. The next drawing is of Laura with a stick in her hand opposite a flat, hairy animal in the grass. Then a picture of Laura milking a cow in a cup, while Ma, Pa, Mary and Carrie watch. Then the drawing of the ox on the roof, with Laura running after it and Jack jumping in front of the ox and Ma hurriedly coming out of the house. The next drawing is of Laura and Mary playing on the haystack. Then a picture of the wagon running wild with Ma and Carrie in the wagonbox and Pa running past the oxen and Laura and Mary watching anxiously on the roof of the house. Then a drawing of Laura and Mary in shawls petting two horses. Own opinion:

A beautiful book, more of a story and less of a description. However, they do face more difficulties. And yet it is a sweet book.

Dit is een dun boekje met hoofdstukken uit de originele kleine huis serie. Het zijn de hoofdstukken die gaan over de moeilijke tijd op de prairie. Zoals onder andere de prairiebrand, de voetbrug waar Laura met hoog water gaat spelen en bijna verdrinkt, de os op het dak van het huis, de sprinkhanen die komen en die eieren leggen, de sneeuwstorm waarbij Pa in de stad is en ze hopen dat hij daar blijft, de dag vol spelletjes die ze spelen omdat Pa verdwaalt is op de prairie en de dag dat hij thuiskomt. De verhalen zijn allemaal bekend.
Dit boekje heeft 8 hoofdstukken. Alle hoofdstukken gaan over moeilijke momenten op de prairie die de familie Ingalls meemaken.
1. Vuur!
Het is lente en pa ploegt het land. Alles wordt groen en alles lijkt goed te gaan, maar dan wordt het donker aan de horizon. Pa komt snel naar huis en ploegt een voor om het huis en de stal. Ma pakt zakken en haalt water uit de put. Er komt een prairievuur aan. Pa bindt de paarden vast aan het huis en hij en Ma slaan naar alle vlammen die over pa's voren komen. Het vuur raast voorbij het huis en spaart alles binnen de voren.
2. De voetbrug
Dagen en dagen heeft het geregend bij Plum Creek en het water in de kleine rivier staat hoog. Op een dag gaat Laura naar buiten en kijkt bij de brug. Deze is helemaal opgenomen in het water. Toch wordt Laura aangetrokken door het water en ze gaat met haar voeten op de brug staan. Het water trekt aan haar enkels en de rest van haar lijf wil het water ook voelen. Ze gaat op de plank liggen en wordt al snel helemaal nat. Maar dan voelt Laura dat het water niet wil spelen, maar wild aan haar trekt en haar wil pakken. Ze wordt bang. Met veel moeite weet ze van de plank weg te komen en beseft dat ze had kunnen verdrinken.
3. Os op het dak.
Mary en Laura zorgen er iedere dag voor dat hun koe en de ossen naar de stal gaan. Ze doen dat bij de grote steen. Als Johny er aan komt met de kudde, kijken Laura en Mary waar hun koe is en drijven hem uit de kudde. Op een dag is al het vee onrustig en laat zich niet makkelijk opdrijven. Een van de os komt los en rent naar de rivieroever. Hij komt op het huis in de grond en zakt met zijn poot door het dak.
4. Sprinkhanen
Alles lijkt goed te gaan met de oogst en pa heeft een nieuw, mooi huis gebouwd voor het gezin. Dan op een dag wordt de zon verduisterd en een wolk van sprinkhanen bedekt het land en alles wat er op staat. Pa's mooie oogst wordt vernietigd. Pa doet er alles aan om de sprinkhanen van de oogst weg te houden, maar niets helpt tegen de overgrote hoeveelheid sprinkhanen die neerstrijkt op het land.
5. Eitjes
De sprinkhanen blijven en zijn overal. Er is nergens meer groen en de mensen op de prairie hebben het moeilijk. Op een dag zitten alle sprinkhanen heel stil. Als Laura kijkt wat ze doen, ziet ze dat de sprinkhanen eitjes leggen. Als deze uitkomen, weet de familie zeker dat er ook volgend jaar geen oogst kan zijn. Pa moet ergens anders werk zoeken. Alle sprinkhanen laten niets groens over op de wereld. Dan op een dag gaan alle sprinkhanen lopen. De grond is bedekt met wandelende sprinkhanen. Pa, Ma en de meisjes kijken toe. De sprinkhanen ontzien niets. Ze lopen zelfs dwars door het huis van raam naar raam. Na een poos vliegen ze allemaal tegelijk op, terug richting de zon.
6. Sneeuw + 7. Spelletjesdag
Het is winter en pa besluit om op een zonnige dag naar de stad te gaan. In de loop van de middag zien Ma en de meisjes een sneeuwstorm komen. Ze zijn er van overtuigd dat Pa in de stad is gebleven. Ma doet het werk in de stal en de meisjes doen wat ze kunnen binnen. De volgende dag is pa er nog niet en raast buiten de sneeuwstorm. Omdat Pa er niet is, is iedereen verdrietig en Ma besluit met de meisjes spelletjes te doen.
8. Verloren en gevonden
De derde dag woedt de storm nog steeds. Pas na 4 dagen is de sneeuwstorm voorbij. Laura maakt een klein gaatje in het ijs op het glas om naar buiten te kijken en ziet een beer naar het huis bewegen. Ze roept Ma en dan ontdekken ze dat het Pa is die naar het huis toe komt. Iedereen is heel blij dat Pa er weer is. Pa vertelt dat hij verdwaalde in de storm en terecht kwam aan de oever van de rivier in een beschut hol. Hij raakte ingesneeuwd en sliep veel. Toen hij geen storm meer hoorde, groef hij zich uit en zag dat hij vlakbij huis was.

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan een klein aantal tekeningen. Goed getekend door Renée Graef. Een mooie tekening is die van Laura die de koe ophaalt aan een touw door een regen van sprinkhanen. Pa die nog een laatste keer zwaait voor hij over de rand van de prairie verdwijnt op zoek naar werk en de tekening dat Pa weer thuiskomt na de sneeuwstorm. De kinderen stralen blijdschap uit, maar Ma in het plaatje ook bezorgdheid.

In het boek staan weer lieve, mooi tekeningen van Renée Graef. Ieder hoofdstuk heeft een eigen tekening en ze lijken behoorlijk veel op tekeningen van Garth Williams. Zo is er een tekening dat pa thuiskomt en iedereen hem omarmt. Een tekening van Ma die in de storm de dieren gaat voeren. Een tekening van Pa die zwaait op de prairie. Laura die de koe ophaalt in een regen van sprinkhanen. Een os op het dak van het huis, met Jack ervoor die hem probeert te sturen en ma met Carrie op de arm die het huis uit komt. Laura die op de plank in het water ligt en het prairievuur dat op het huis af komt en pa en ma die hun best doen om het vuur te weren.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met bekende teksten, maar leuke tekeningen van Renée Graef. Eigenlijk het eerste boekje van de chapterbooks die ik heb gekocht, omdat deze beschikbaar was in de winkel.

This is a book with chapters from the original Little House series. These are the chapters that deal with the difficult times on the prairie. Such as the prairie fire, the footbridge where Laura goes to play at high tide and almost drowns, the ox on the roof of the house, the locusts that come and lay eggs, the snowstorm where Pa is in town and they hope that he stays there, the day full of games they play because Pa got lost on the prairie and the day he comes home. The stories are all known.

This booklet has 8 chapters. All chapters are about difficult moments on the prairie that the Ingalls family experiences.

1. Fire!

It's spring and Pa is plowing the land. Everything turns green and everything seems to be going well, but then it becomes dark on the horizon. Pa comes home quickly and plows a furrow around the house and stable. Ma packs bags and gets water from the well. There's a prairie fire coming. Pa ties the horses to the house and he and Ma beat at all the flames that come over Pa's front. The fire rages past the house, sparing everything within the furrows.

2. The foot bridge

It has been raining for days and days at Plum Creek and the water in the small river is high. One day Laura goes outside and looks at the bridge. This is completely absorbed into the water. Yet Laura is attracted by the water and she stands with her feet on the bridge. The water pulls on her ankles and the rest of her body wants to feel the water too. She lies down on the board and quickly gets completely wet. But then Laura feels that the water does not want to play, but pulls wildly on her and wants to grab her. She gets scared. With great difficulty she manages to get away from the woodbridge and realizes that she could have drowned.

3. Ox on the roof.

Mary and Laura ensure that their cow and oxen go to the stable every day. They do that at the big stone. When Johny arrives with the herd, Laura and Mary look where their cow is and drive it out of the herd. One day all the cattle are restless and cannot be easily pushed around. One of the ox breaks free and runs to the riverbank. He lands on the house in the ground and sinks through the roof with his paw.

4. Grasshoppers

Everything seems to be going well with the harvest and Pa has built a new, beautiful house for the family. Then one day the sun is darkened and a cloud of locusts covers the land and everything in it. Pa's beautiful harvest is destroyed. Pa does everything he can to keep the locusts away from the harvest, but nothing helps against the overwhelming number of locusts that land on the land.

5. Eggs

The locusts remain and are everywhere. There is no green anywhere anymore and the people on the prairie are having a hard time. One day all the locusts sit very still. When Laura watches what they are doing, she sees that the locusts are laying eggs. If these come out, the family is sure that there will be no harvest next year either. Pa has to look for work elsewhere. All locusts leave nothing green in the world. Then one day all the locusts start walking. The ground is covered with walking locusts. Ma, Pa and the girls are watching. The locusts spare nothing. They even walk straight through the house from window to window. After a while they all fly up at the same time, back towards the sun.

6. Snow + 7. Day of Games

It's winter and Pa decides to go to town on a sunny day. During the afternoon, Ma and the girls see a snowstorm coming. They are convinced that Pa has stayed in town. Ma does the work in the stable and the girls do what they can inside. The next day Pa isn't there yet and the snowstorm is raging outside. Because Pa is not there, everyone is sad and Ma decides to play games with the girls.

8. Lost and found

The third day the storm is still raging. Only after 4 days is the snowstorm over. Laura makes a small hole in the ice on the glass to look outside and sees a bear moving towards the house. She calls Ma and then they discover that it is Pa coming to the house. Everyone is very happy that Pa is back. Pa says he got lost in the storm and ended up on the riverbank in a sheltered hole. He got snowed in and slept a lot. When he heard no more storm, he dug out and saw that he was close to home.

Drawings:

The book contains a small number of drawings. Well drawn by Renée Graef. A beautiful drawing is that of Laura retrieving the cow on a rope through a rain of locusts. Pa waves one last time before he disappears over the edge of the prairie in search of work and the drawing of Pa coming home after the snowstorm. The children radiate joy, but Ma also shows concern in the picture.

The book contains sweet, beautiful drawings by Renée Graef. Each chapter has its own drawing and they look quite similar to drawings by Garth Williams. For example, there is a drawing that shows Pa coming home and everyone embracing him. A drawing of Ma feeding the animals in the storm. A drawing of Pa waving on the prairie. Laura collecting the cow in a rain of locusts. An ox on the roof of the house, with Jack in front of it trying to steer it and Ma with Carrie on her arm coming out of the house. Laura lying on the bridge in the water and the prairie fire coming towards the house and Ma and Pa doing their best to keep the fire out.

Own opinion:

A thin book with well-known texts, but nice drawings by Renée Graef. Actually the first book of the chapter books that I bought, because it was available in the store.

Het verhaal zelf is simpel. Elk boekje begint met “once upon a time, a little girl named Laura lived in the big woods of Wisconsin in a little house made of logs”. Het verhaal vertelt eerst dat het zo druk is geworden in de Grote Bossen, dat Mary en Laura dagelijks nieuwe mensen in huifkarren voorbij zien komen. Pa wil weg uit een gebied waar de dieren niet meer vrij rond lopen. Pa vertelt aan Ma dat hij besloten heeft om naar het Westen te gaan, waar minder mensen zijn en geen bomen en het gras dik en wuivend staat. Pa verkoopt de koe en het kalf. Ma en Pa pakken alles in de huifkar. Dan op een morgen wekt Ma Mary en Laura en is het tijd om te vertrekken. Ma helpt de meisjes met zich dik aankleden. Over de weg komen karren met familie naar de blokhut. Grootmoeder en de tantes knuffelen en kussen de dik ingepakte meisjes. Laura houdt haar pop goed vast. De ooms en grootvader helpen Pa om de paarden voor de wagen te spannen en de neefjes en nichtjes wordt vertelt om afscheid te nemen van Laura en Mary. Mary en Laura worden in de wagen getild en ma krijgt Carrie aangereikt van grootmoeder. Dan rijdt de wagen weg van de blokhut in het bos. Ze zijn op weg met pa op de bok en Jack onder de wagen.

Tekeningen:

Dit dunne kinderboekje is getekend door Renée Graef. De eerste tekening is een mooi plaatje van bovenaf van het kleine huis in het grote bos met de stal. Ma voert de kippen en Laura draagt iets naar het huis met Jack op haar hielen. Uit de schoorsteen van de blokhut kringelt rook. Het tweede plaatje is van het gezin Ingalls in de tuin, met Laura op de schommel en Carrie die haar eerste stapjes zet. De volgende tekening is van Mary en Laura in de tuin die kijken naar een huifkar die voorbij komt op de weg met achterin twee onbekende kinderen. Laura heeft haar arm om Jack geslagen en Mary houdt haar pop vast. In tekening drie kijkt Pa om de boom heen naar een grote beer die blauwe bessen zit te eten. De volgende tekening is van Pa die Ma vertelt dat hij naar het Westen wil. Ze zitten in de blokhut, Ma heeft haar breiwerk op schoot, terwijl ze luistert in het lamplicht naar wat Pa te vertellen heeft. In de volgende tekening verkoopt Pa de koe en het kalf aan een man die hem geld overhandigt, terwijl hij de dieren aan een touw heeft. Er ligt sneeuw op de grond. Op de volgende tekening staat Ma in de huifkar tussen de pakketten, Pa komt aanlopen met een doos in zijn armen. De bomen zijn kaal en er ligt nog sneeuw. Dan is het plaatje dat Ma Laura wakker maakt, Mary ligt naast haar te slapen. Op de volgende tekening helpt Ma Laura in haar jurk over een dikke onderjurk. Mary is haar kousen aan aan het trekken. Jack kijkt toe. Het huis is leeg en op het bed liggen dekens en handschoenen en een muts. De volgende tekening is van twee wagen die aan komen over de weg. De blokhut staat in de sneeuw langs de weg. Vervolgens is getekend dat grootmoeder en de tantes Laura en Mary knuffelen en kussen. Laura heeft haar pop vast. Mannen lichten bij met lantaarns. Op het volgende plaatjes zie je de knuffels tussen de neefjes en nichtjes en Mary en Laura. Iemand heeft een paard vast om in te spannen. Een neefje kijkt toe, zittend op een boomstronk. De huifkar staat er volgeladen bij. Dan komt het plaatje met Mary en Laura met hun poppen aan de zijkant in de huifkar. Ma zit op de bok en krijgt van grootmoeder Carrie aangereikt. Om grootmoeder heen staan de volwassenen toe te kijken. Op de volgende tekening kijken Mary en Laura uit de achterkant van de huifkar, tussen de spullen, naar de blokhut in de sneeuw, met de twee boomstronken waarop ze altijd speelden, de kale bomen van het grote bos. Dan volgt een tekening  waarbij het hele gezin op de bok te zien is. Pa houdt de leidsels, Laura staat achter Pa met haar handen op zijn schouders. Ma zit naast Pa met een dik ingepakte Carrie op schoot. Mary staat schuin achter Ma en Ma en Mary kijken naar elkaar. De laatste tekening is van de wagen in een bleke zon in de kale, besneeuwde bossen. Jack loopt achter de wagen. Mary en Laura kijken achter uit de wagen.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met mooie tekeningen van Renée Graef. Lieflijk en mooi en levendig. En zo “warm” dat de tekeningen echt wat uitstralen. De tekeningen zijn de reden dat ik dit boekje hebt en ze zijn zo mooi. De tekeningen zijn weer erg mooi en lief en gedetailleerd. Echt leuk om naar te kijken. Ze zijn heel “warm”. Er is weinig verschil te zien dus de tekenstijl van Renée Graef en Doris Ettlinger. Wel zie je verschillen met Garth Williams. De tekeningen in het boekje zijn allemaal in kleur.

The story itself is simple. Each booklet begins with “once upon a time, a little girl named Laura lived in the big woods of Wisconsin in a little house made of logs”. The story first tells that it has become so busy in the Big Woods that Mary and Laura see new people passing by in covered wagons every day. Pa wants to leave an area where animals no longer roam freely. Pa tells Ma that he has decided to go to the West, where there are fewer people and no trees and the grass is thick and waving. Pa sells the cow and calf. Ma and Pa pack everything in the covered wagon. Then one morning Ma wakes Mary and Laura and it is time to leave. Ma helps the girls dress up. Wagons with family come along the road to the cabin. Grandmother and the aunts hug and kiss the bundled up girls. Laura holds her doll tightly. The uncles and grandfather help Pa hitch the horses to the wagon and the nieces and nephews are told to say goodbye to Laura and Mary. Mary and Laura are lifted into the wagon and Ma is handed Carrie by Grandmother. Then the wagon drives away from the cabin in the woods. They are on the road with Pa on the box and Jack under the wagon.

This thin children's book is drawn by Renée Graef. The first drawing is a beautiful picture from above of the little house and stable in the big woods. Ma feeds the chickens and Laura carries something to the house with Jack on her heels. Smoke billows from the chimney of the log cabin. The second picture is of the Ingalls family in the garden, with Laura on the swing and Carrie taking her first steps. The next drawing is of Mary and Laura in the garden watching a covered wagon passing by on the road with two unknown children in the back. Laura has her arm around Jack and Mary is holding her doll. In drawing three, Pa looks around the tree at a big bear eating blueberries. The next drawing is of Pa telling Ma that he wants to go to the West. They are sitting in the log cabin, Ma has her knitting on her lap, while she listens in the lamplight to what Pa has to say. In the next drawing, Pa sells the cow and calf to a man who hands him money while he has the animals on a rope. There is snow on the ground. In the next drawing, Ma is standing in the covered wagon among the packages, Pa approaches with a box in his arms. The trees are bare and there is still snow. Then the picture is that Ma wakes Laura, Mary is sleeping next to her. In the next drawing, Ma helps Laura into her dress over a thick underdress. Mary is putting on her stockings. Jack watches. The house is empty and there are blankets and gloves and a hat on the bed. The next drawing is of two wagons approaching on the road. The log cabin stands in the snow along the road. It is then shown that grandmother and aunts Laura and Mary are hugging and kissing. Laura is holding her doll. Men illuminate with lanterns. In the following pictures you can see the hugs between the nieces and nephews and Mary and Laura. Someone is holding a horse to harness. A nephew watches, sitting on a tree stump. The covered wagon is fully loaded. Then comes the picture with Mary and Laura with their dolls on the side in the covered wagon. Ma sits on the box and is handed Carrie by grandmother. The adults stand around grandmother and watch. In the next drawing, Mary and Laura look out of the back of the covered wagon, among the belongings, at the log cabin in the snow, with the two tree stumps on which they always played, the bare trees of the big forest. Then follows a drawing showing the entire family on the box. Pa holds the reins, Laura stands behind Pa with her hands on his shoulders. Ma sits next to Pa with a heavily wrapped Carrie on her lap. Mary stands diagonally behind Ma and Ma and Mary look at each other. The last drawing is of the wagon in a pale sun in the bare, snow-covered woods. Jack walks behind the car. Mary and Laura look out the back of the wagon.

Own opinion:

A thin book with beautiful drawings by Renée Graef. Sweet and beautiful and alive. And so “warm” that the drawings really radiate something. The drawings are the reason I have this book and they are so beautiful. The drawings are again very beautiful and sweet and detailed. Really fun to watch. They are very “warm”. There is little difference to be seen in the drawing style of Renée Graef and Doris Ettlinger. You do see differences with Garth Williams. The drawings in the book are all in color.

Het verhaal gaat over het gezin Ingalls dat naar de stad Pepin gaat. Eerst worden de haren in krullen gedraaid, dan kleedden ze zich mooi aan. Vervolgens gaan ze in de wagen naar de stad. Als Pa de meisjes de drukke stad aanwijst, kijken ze hun ogen uit. In de stad gaan ze naar de winkel, waar mary en Laura verbaasd rondkijken. Ze krijgen ieder een snoephartje. Dan picknicken ze aan de rand van het meer. Daarna gaan ze weer naar huis.

Tekeningen:

Dit kinderboek is weer getekend door Renée Graef. De tekeningen zijn mooi en gedetailleerd. En overzicht van een bloemenveld en bomen, waarachter een meisjesjurk verstopt.  Op de volgende bladzijde zie je dat Laura achter de boom staat en kijkt naar een vogel op een tak en daar achter de blokhut. Dan een tekening van Ma die de meisjes voorleest, terwijl Pa met Carrie speelt. En een tekening van Pa die aan Laura en Mary vertelt dat ze naar de stad gaan. Laura en Mary die in de tuin spelen, met stuk serviesgoed op een boomstronk en de pop van Mary tegen de boomstronk. In de boom hangt een schommel en een grijze eekhoorn kijkt toe. De volgende tekening is van in de avond dat Ma de haren van Laura krult en Mary haar haren doorkamt. De volgende tekening is van de ochtend dat Ma, Laura en Mary hun mooie jurken aan trekken. Carrie zit al klaar. De volgende plaat is van Pa die bij de ingespannen wagen staat en Laura die op hem af rent om er in gezet te worden. Ma en Mary komen er aan en Ma heeft Carrie op de arm. Op de volgende tekening zitten ze allemaal in de wagen die door het bos over het pad rijdt. Dan een tekening van Pa die achterom kijkt op de bok en met de zweep naar het begin van de stad wijst. De stad ligt aan het meer. Dan een overzichtstekening van de stad met veel huizen en kinderen die spelen op boomstronken en vrouwen die de was doen. De winkel staat vooraan en de wagen met de familie Ingalls komt linksonder aan. Op de volgende tekening staat Laura met open mond op de veranda van de winkel terwijl Ma met Carrie en Mary en Pa nog aan komen lopen.  Laura kijkt de winkel in. Vervolgens zijn ze in de winkel. Pa heeft Carrie op de arm zodat Ma de stof kan bekijken die de winkelier op houdt. Mary zit onder de toonbank rond te kijken. Laura staat midden in de winkel. De winkel zelf is vol spullen: tonnen, zakken, stoffen, blikken, pakken, een kachel, een weegschaal op de toonbank, potten snoep en aan het plafond hangt heel veel. Op de volgende tekening staan Mary en Laura met hun hart in hun hand. Dan de tekening dat het gezin picknickt op het strand bij het meer. Hond Jack jaagt achter de vogels aan, Carrie speelt met haar voetjes, Ma pakt de picknickmand uit en Pa kijkt naar Laura die een bloem in haar hand heeft. In de laatste tekening schijnt de maan boven de bomen en zitten ze allemaal in de wagen in het bos naar huis.

Eigen mening:

Simpel boekje, maar prachtige, zeer levendige tekeningen. Het verhaal is gewoon een hoofdstuk uit de boeken dat bekend is, maar een kort stukje, maar dit boek is echt voor de tekeningen. En de tekeningen zijn zo mooi en levensecht dat je de geluiden kunt horen en de geuren kunt ruiken door de tekeningen heen.

This children's book is again drawn by Renée Graef. The drawings are beautiful and detailed. An overview of a field of flowers and trees, behind which a girl's dress is hidden. On the next page you see that Laura is standing behind the tree and looking at a bird on a branch and behind it the log cabin. Then a drawing of Ma reading to the girls, while Pa plays with Carrie. And a drawing of Pa telling Laura and Mary that they are going to town. Laura and Mary playing in the garden, with a piece of crockery on a tree stump and Mary's doll against the tree stump. A swing hangs in the tree and a gray squirrel watches. The next drawing is from the evening when Ma curls Laura's hair and Mary combs her hair. The next drawing is from the morning that Ma, Laura and Mary put on their beautiful dresses. Carrie is already ready. The next picture is of Pa standing by the harnessed wagon and Laura running towards him to be put into it. Ma and Mary arrive and Ma has Carrie in her arm. In the next drawing they are all in the wagon driving along the path through the forest. Then a drawing of Pa looking back on the box and pointing with the whip to the beginning of the city. The city is located on the lake. Then an overview drawing of the city with many houses and children playing on tree stumps and women doing the laundry. The store is at the front and the wagon with the Ingalls family arriving at the bottom left. In the next drawing, Laura stands with her mouth open on the veranda of the store while Ma is coming with Carrie and Mary and Pa. Laura looks into the store. Then they are in the store. Pa has Carrie on his arm so Ma can look at the fabric the shopkeeper is holding up. Mary is sitting under the counter looking around. Laura is standing in the middle of the store. The store itself is full of stuff: barrels, bags, fabrics, cans, a stove, a scale on the counter, jars of candy and a lot hanging from the ceiling. The next drawing shows Mary and Laura with their hearts in their hands. Then the drawing that shows the family picnicking on the beach near the lake. Dog Jack chases the birds, Carrie plays with her feet, Ma unpacks the picnic basket and Pa looks at Laura who has a flower in her hand. In the last drawing the moon shines above the trees and they are all in the wagon in the forest heading home.

Own opinion:

Simple book, but beautiful, very lively drawings. The story is just a chapter from the books that is known, but a short piece, but this book is really for the drawings. And the drawings are so beautiful and lifelike that you can hear the sounds and smell the smells through the drawings.

Dit boek van hoofdstukken uit de Caroline-serie gaat over de gezellige dingen in de serie. Er zijn 7 hoofdstukken.
1. Familie-uitje
Het is Bevrijdingsdag en Caroline en de hele familie gaan naar Brookfield om dat te vieren. Onderweg ontmoeten ze de familie Carpenter en in de stad ontmoet Caroline haar goede vriendin Anna. Anna heeft een mooie fluit. De meisjes lopen mee in de optocht en zien van alles in de stad. Er wordt een grote picknick gehouden.
2. Een verrassing bij het bessen plukken.
Henry en Caroline zijn samen in het bos bessen aan het plukken. Als Caroline geruis hoort, denkt ze dat Henry haar gaat laten schrikken. Eerst reageert ze nauwelijks, maar dan ziet ze dat het een wolf is die het geluid maakt. Caroline schrikt heel erg. Gelukkig komt Henry haar helpen. Dan begint de wolf Caroline's vingers af te likken. Caroline is erg geschrokken en begrijpt niet dat de wolf zo tam is. Dan vraagt Henry zich hardop af van wie deze hond toch kan zijn. Ze nemen de hond mee naar huis en vragen of ze hem mogen houden.
3. Mollen
Het gezin zit aan tafel als Henry begint over het hebben van een hond. Moeder heeft al snel door waarom hij dit vraagt, maar geeft duidelijk aan dat er in het gezin geen plaats is voor een hond. Dan komt Joseph binnen. Hij heeft doorgewerkt in de tuin en komt vertellen dat mollen de groente hebben aangevreten. Het hele gezin gaat kijken naar de tuin en de ravage. Dan besluit Henry om de hond te halen, welke meteen een mol weet te vangen. Moeder besluit ter plekke dat de hond mag blijven, als Henry goed voor hem zorgt.
4. Dooi in januari
Op een koude wintermorgen wordt Caroline wakker en lijkt het licht anders. De dooi is ingetreden en er is veel werk te doen. Er is echter ook een moment voor de kinderen om samen buiten te spelen. Ze besluiten hun schoenen uit te doen en de meisjes leggen hun doeken weg. Eerst maken de meisjes samen poppen van gras. Hun omslagdoeken worden helemaal nat van het op de grond liggen. Later spelen de kinderen samen tikkertje in het grasveld. Eerst voelt Caroline zich nog wat nat, maar al snel is ze warm van het spelen.
5. Koude voeten
De hele middag spelen de kinderen samen buiten. Charlie komt ook meedoen. Ze zijn wel nat, maar niet koud en hebben veel pret. Dan ontdekt Caroline dat ze haar mooie, nieuwe, groene haarlint kwijt is en is voor haar de pret een beetje voorbij. Als ze gaat zoeken komt ze moeder tegen die haar schoenen en sokken heeft gevonden en erg boos is dat Caroline ze niet draagt. Als moeder de andere kinderen ook zonder warme kleren ziet, wordt ze nog bozer. Moeder commandeert alle kinderen naar huis en voor straf moeten ze in bed wachten tot alle kleren droog zijn. Caroline is erg verdrietig omdat ze haar haarlint kwijt is en ze wordt boos op Martha die begon met schoenen uitdoen. Gelukkig heeft Martha het haarlint van Caroline gevonden en in haar zak gestoken.
6. Circus-optocht
In het voorjaar moeten Martha en Caroline naar school. Op een dag, als ze van school naar huis lopen, horen ze in de verte muziek. Er komt een optocht aan. Martha en Caroline blijven staan kijken. Ze zien een clown en olifanten, een beer en slangen, apen en acrobaten.
7. Witte beren
Het is herfst en Caroline en Eliza zoeken in het bos naar nootjes en bladeren voor de dieren. Dan worden ze opgeschrikt door een raar geluid. Caroline ziet in de bomen twee witte gedaantes en Eliza schrikt erg. Caroline denkt dat de twee gedaanten witte beren zijn en de meisjes vluchten het bos uit. Eliza verliest in de haast haar emmer. Thuis moet Caroline uitleggen waarom ze een emmer kwijt zijn en waarom ze zijn weg gerend. Moeder gelooft niets van het verhaal van de witte beren, maar Caroline is er van overtuigd. De witte beren uit het circus zijn ontsnapt. Ze droomt er 's nachts van. De volgende ochtend besluit ze in alle vroegte Eliza's emmer te gaan zoeken. Henry is ook al op en Caroline vertelt hem waarom de emmer in het bos is achtergebleven en van de witte beren. Henry begint te lachen. Dan legt hij uit dat hij en Charlie een dag eerder in de bomen wilden klimmen, om te voorkomen dat hun kleren vies werden of stuk gingen, hadden ze ze uit getrokken. Daarna klommen ze in de bomen in hun witte ondergoed. Ook Caroline moet er erg om lachen. Henry belooft om de emmer van Eliza te gaan halen.

Tekeningen:

In het boek staan verschillende tekeningen. Er is een tekening van alle mensen in de stad die luisteren naar een man die de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring voorleest. Er is een plaatje van een bange Caroline die in het bos tegenover een wolf staat en geholpen wordt door Henry. En de hond Wolf die Henry helpt bij het vangen van mollen. Verder een tekening van de drie meisjes die rond de houtstapel spelen op blote voeten met wapperende sjaals. En een plaatje van Martha die Caroline haar haarlint teruggeeft. Caroline veegt haar tranen weg. Dan nog een plaatje van de circusoptocht met olifant op de brug en de kooi met de witte beer. Het laatste plaatje is van Henry en Caroline die lachen om het verhaal van de witte beren in het bos.

Eigen mening:

Bekende hoofdstukken, lieve tekeningen. Uit de Caroline-serie. Wel geinig boekje.

1. Family outing

It's Liberation Day and Caroline and the whole family are going to Brookfield to celebrate. Along the way they meet the Carpenter family and in the city Caroline meets her good friend Anna. Anna has a beautiful flute. The girls participate in the parade and see everything in the city. A big picnic is being held.

2. A surprise when picking berries.

Henry and Caroline are picking berries together in the forest. When Caroline hears rustling, she thinks Henry is going to scare her. At first she hardly reacts, but then she sees that it is a wolf making the sound. Caroline is very shocked. Fortunately, Henry comes to help her. Then the wolf starts licking Caroline's fingers. Caroline is very shocked and does not understand why the wolf is so tame. Then Henry wonders out loud who this dog could belong to. They take the dog home and ask if they can keep it.

3. Critters

The family is sitting at the table when Henry starts talking about having a dog. Mother soon realizes why he asks this, but clearly indicates that there is no room for a dog in the family. Then Joseph enters. He has been working in the garden and comes to tell us that critters have eaten the vegetables. The whole family goes to look at the garden and the devastation. Then Henry decides to get the dog, which immediately manages to catch a critter. Mother decides on the spot that the dog can stay, if Henry takes good care of him.

4. Thaw in January

On a cold winter morning, Caroline wakes up and the light seems different. The thaw has set in and there is a lot of work to be done. However, there is also a moment for the children to play outside together. They decide to take off their shoes and the girls put their shawls away. First the girls make dolls out of grass together. Their shawls get completely wet from lying on the floor. Later the children play tag together in the meadow. At first Caroline feels a bit wet, but soon she is warm from playing.

5. Cold feet

The children play outside together all afternoon. Charlie also joins in. They are wet, but not cold and are having a lot of fun. Then Caroline discovers that she has lost her beautiful, new, green hair ribbon and the fun is a bit over for her. When she goes looking, she comes across mother who has found her shoes and socks and is very angry that Caroline is not wearing them. When mother sees the other children without warm clothes, she becomes even angrier. Mother orders all the children home and as punishment they have to wait in bed until all the clothes are dry. Caroline is very sad because she lost her hair ribbon and she gets angry at Martha who started taking off shoes. Luckily, Martha found Caroline's hair ribbon and put it in her pocket.

6. Circus parade

In the spring, Martha and Caroline have to go to school. One day, as they walk home from school, they hear music in the distance. There's a parade coming. Martha and Caroline continue to watch. They see a clown and elephants, a bear and snakes, monkeys and acrobats.

7. White bears

It's autumn and Caroline and Eliza are looking in the forest for nuts and leaves for the animals. Then they are startled by a strange noise. Caroline sees two white figures in the trees and Eliza is very shocked. Caroline thinks the two figures are white bears and the girls flee the forest. Eliza loses her bucket in her haste. At home, Caroline has to explain why they lost a bucket and why they ran away. Mother doesn't believe the story of the white bears, but Caroline is convinced. The white bears from the circus have escaped. She dreams about it at night. The next morning she decides to go look for Eliza's bucket early in the morning. Henry is also up and Caroline tells him why the bucket was left in the forest and about the white bears. Henry starts laughing. Then he explains that he and Charlie wanted to climb the trees a day earlier, so to prevent their clothes from getting dirty or torn, they took them off. Then they climbed the trees in their white underwear. Caroline also has to laugh about it. Henry promises to get Eliza's bucket.

Drawings:

The book contains several drawings. There is a drawing of all the people in town listening to a man read the Declaration of Independence. There is a picture of a scared Caroline facing a wolf in the woods and being helped by Henry. And the dog Wolf who helps Henry catch critters. Furthermore, a drawing of the three girls playing around the woodpile in bare feet with fluttering shawls. And a picture of Martha giving Caroline back her hair ribbon. Caroline wipes away her tears. Then a picture of the circus parade with the elephant on the bridge and the cage with the white bear. The last picture is of Henry and Caroline laughing about the story of the white bears in the forest.

Well-known chapters, sweet drawings. From the Caroline series. Nice book.
