Samenvatting:

Dit boek gaat over Almanzo als hij met zijn ouders voor het eerst naar Spring Valley reist. Ze hebben het goed in Malone, maar er komt een brief van de broer van moeder of ze niet eens in Spring Valley willen komen kijken. Uiteindelijk besluiten vader en moeder dat te doen. Het kleine broertje Perley gaat mee. Ze besluiten ook Alice mee te nemen en Almanzo mag kiezen. Hij is dol op zijn paard Starlight en zou binnenkort naar de Academy in Malone gaan, maar Almanzo houdt niet zo van studeren. Hij mag in New York blijven of meegaan naar het Westen. Almanzo besluit mee te gaan voor het avontuur. Hij is nu 13 jaar oud. Er zijn veel voorbereidingen nodig voor het gezin kan vertrekken. Royal en Eliza Jane blijven achter in Malone om de boerderij te onderhouden. Er volgt een lange treinreis naar Minnesota. Onderweg overnachten ze in de trein in een Pullman-wagon. Het is allemaal nieuw en spannend voor Almanzo. In Spring Valley trekken ze in bij de broer van moeder, oom George en zijn vrouw tante Martha. Ze zijn er niet erg welkom. Oom George blijkt in de loop van de tijd ziek. Almanzo en Vader doen voor hem wat ze kunnen en ook Moeder en Alice werken hard in huis. Alice en Almanzo worden in Spring Valley naar school gestuurd. Almanzo vindt al gauw een vriend, Albert Baldwin. Op school komt hij wel mee, maar hij is liever op de boerderij. Hoewel het gezin zich niet welkom voelt bij tante Martha, proberen ze er het beste van te maken. Al gauw besluit Vader grond te kopen naast het land van Oom George. Zo kunnen ze hem helpen en toch ook op zichzelf zijn. Vader bouwt meteen een goed huis en een stal. Hij koopt vee en begint met het verbouwen van groente en gewassen. Tevens helpen Vader en Almanzo oom George met zijn boerderij. Het is hard werken om twee boerderijen draaiende te houden en Almanzo volgt ook nog school. Toch is hij gelukkig in hun eigen huis. Hij krijgt een hond en met kerstmis zijn eigen paard, Queen, want hij kan Starlight niet vergeten. Al gauw wordt het gezin Wilder opgenomen in de sociale kring van Spring Valley. Er zijn dansavonden, ontmoetingen en kerkdiensten. Ook is er een basket-veiling, die we kennen uit de verhalen van Rose. Almanzo probeert wel mee te bieden op een mand van het meisje waar hij op afstand om geeft, maar weet er uiteindelijk geen te kopen. Met kerst worden er kadootjes gestuurd naar Malone, want er is een intensieve briefwisseling met Royal en Eliza Jane. Met kerst krijgt Almanzo dus een nieuw paard, maar ook snoep en knikkers. Net in het nieuwe jaar sterft Oom George. Dit houdt het gezin Wilder nog langer in Spring Valley en niet in staat om terug te gaan naar Malone om daar hun boerderij te verkopen. Moeder neemt een tijd tante Martha in huis, tot zij besluit te hertrouwen en vervolgens haar grond aan Vader verkoopt. Nu alles is geregeld in Spring Valley kan Vader terug naar Malone om daar de boel te verkopen en regelen. Na 2 jaar gaat het gezin terug. Almanzo is heel blij om in Malone Starlight weer te zien. Daarmee eindigt het boek.

De schrijfster vertelt op het eind van het boek dat ze bepaalde dingen heeft aangepast in het verhaal. De periode die ze beschrijft heeft ze verkort, de leeftijden van de kinderen Wilder heeft ze zo gelaten als Laura heeft beschreven, maar officieel klopt dit niet. Ze heeft expres de leeftijd van de toekomstige man van Alice, Albert Baldwin, verlaagt, zodat ze hem bevriend met Almanzo kon maken. Ze heeft een meisje verzonnen waar Almanzo verliefd op was. Verder heeft ze toch haar best gedaan het verhaal goed te vertellen.

Tekeningen:

Er staan geen plaatjes in het boek. Bijna elk hoofdstuk begint met een beschrijving van de omgeving of het weer of het jaargetijde. Op zich goede beschrijvingen, maar het maakt het verhaal wat algemeen.

Eigen mening:

Wel een geinig boek, qua stijl gebaseerd op de Laura-boeken, qua verhaal zeer fictief. Wel leuk om te lezen

This book is about Almanzo when he travels to Spring Valley for the first time with his parents. They are doing well in Malone, but a letter arrives from mother's brother asking if they would like to come and visit Spring Valley. Ultimately, father and mother decide to do so. Little brother Perley comes along. They also decide to take Alice with them and Almanzo gets to choose. He loves his horse Starlight and would soon go to the Academy in Malone, but Almanzo is not much into studying. He can stay in New York or go to the West. Almanzo decides to come along for the adventure. He is now 13 years old. Many preparations are needed before the family can leave. Royal and Eliza Jane stay behind in Malone to maintain the farm. A long train journey to Minnesota follows. Along the way they spend the night on the train in a Pullman car. It's all new and exciting for Almanzo. In Spring Valley they move in with mother's brother, Uncle George and his wife Aunt Martha. They are not very welcome there. Over time, Uncle George turns out to be ill. Almanzo and Father do what they can for him and Mother and Alice also work hard in the house. Alice and Almanzo are sent to school in Spring Valley. Almanzo soon finds a friend, Albert Baldwin. He comes along at school, but he prefers to be on the farm. Although the family does not feel welcome at Aunt Martha's, they try to make the best of it. Soon Father decides to buy land next to Uncle George's land. This way they can help him and still be on their own. Father immediately builds a good house and a stable. He buys livestock and starts growing vegetables and crops. Father and Almanzo also help Uncle George with his farm. It is hard work to keep two farms running and Almanzo is also still attending school. Yet he is happy in their own home. He gets a dog and his own horse, Queen, for Christmas, because he can't forget Starlight. The Wilder family soon became part of Spring Valley's social circle. There are dance evenings, meetings and church services. There is also a basket auction, which we know from Rose's stories. Almanzo tries to bid on a basket from the girl he cares about from a distance, but ultimately fails to buy one. Presents are sent to Malone at Christmas, because there is an intensive correspondence with Royal and Eliza Jane. So for Christmas Almanzo gets a new horse, but also candy and marbles. Just in the new year, Uncle George dies. This keeps the Wilder family in Spring Valley even longer and unable to return to Malone to sell their farm. Mother takes in Aunt Martha for a while, until she decides to remarry and then sells her land to Father. Now that everything has been arranged in Spring Valley, Father can return to Malone to sell and arrange everything there. After 2 years the family returns. Almanzo is very happy to see Starlight again in Malone. This is how the book ends.

At the end of the book the author says that she has adjusted certain things in the story. She has shortened the period she describes, she has left the ages of the Wilder children as Laura described, but officially this is not correct. She deliberately lowered the age of Alice's future husband, Albert Baldwin, so that she could make him friends with Almanzo. She made up a girl that Almanzo was in love with. Furthermore, she did her best to tell the story well.

Almost every chapter starts with a description of the environment or the weather or the season. Good descriptions in themselves, but it makes the story a bit general.

Own opinion:

A funny book, based on the Laura books in style, but very fictional in terms of story. Nice to read
