Samenvatting:

Dit boek gaat over Almanzo en zijn jaar op de boerderij in Malone. De boerderij was goed op de rit en prosperous. Almanzo wordt al snel 9 jaar oud in het boek. Hij is een echte boerenzoon, gewend aan hard werken en hij wil ook graag helpen. Het enige waar zijn vader hem niet mee laat helpen is met de jonge paarden. Almanzo vindt school niet leuk. Hij hoeft niet heel vaak, maar op school zijn de “grote jongens” en deze slaan de leraar in elkaar en maken de school onmogelijk. Almanzo is bang van de jongens en vindt het erg voor de leraar. Maar dan blijkt de leraar voorbereid en geeft de grote jongens een flink pak slaag. Daarna gaat de school gewoon door, maar Almanzo mag thuisblijven als dat nodig is. Zoals op zijn verjaardag, als hij een juk krijgt voor zijn twee jonge ossen en met ze moet trainen. Maar hij krijgt ook een slee. Er is altijd veel eten in huis en Almanzo is een goede eter. Zijn ouders zijn allebei altijd aan het werk, maar doen hun werk wel met plezier. Almanzo moet nog veel leren. Als hij mee ijs gaat steken, valt hij bijna in het wak. Bij het africhten van de jonge kalveren moet hij ook nog zelf veel leren. Hij is trots als vader zegt dat hij goed melkt. En zijn moeder controleert of hij zich wel goed heeft gewassen in de tobbe. Dan wordt het lente en daarmee neemt het werk op de boerderij toe. Almanzo doet zijn aandeel in het werk. Hij ploegt, zaait, poot en onderhoudt de akkers. De tin bewerker en boterkoper komen langs. En de paardenkoper. Vader heeft een mooi span paarden en verdient veel geld. Er zijn veel dieren op de boerderij, maar geen hond. Die nacht klopt een vreemde hond aan de achterdeur. Ze geven het vermagerde dier eten. Die nacht ontsnappen ze, dankzij de dankbare en waakzame hond, aan een overval. De volgende ochtend brengt vader eerst het geld naar de bank. De schapen worden geschoren en Almanzo moet de geschoren huiden naar de zolder brengen. Iedereen lacht hem uit als hij haast, maar hij zal toch altijd als laatste klaar zijn. Dat blijkt ook zo te zijn bij de lunch. Maar Almanzo is slimmer en hijst vast een schaap naar boven als hij toch de laatste is. Uiteindelijk lacht de laatste het beste. Op 4 juli vindt er nachtvorst plaats. Dit is desastreus voor de jonge planten en de hele familie staat midden in de nacht op om de plantjes met water te begieten tegen het bevriezen en zo de oogst te redden. Daarna is het een feestdag 4 juli. Almanzo krijgt geld van zijn vader voor al het harde werken en koopt er een varkentje voor. Daarna in de zomer is er weer veel werk. En Almanzo doet wat gedaan moet worden. Vader en moeder gaan samen een week weg en de 4 kinderen; Royal, Eliza Jane, Alice en Almanzo zijn de baas in huis. Ze maken teveel ijs van bijna alle suiker. Ze doen niet alle karweitjes helemaal op de juiste tijd. En op het einde maken Almanzo en Eliza Jane ruzie en gooit Almanzo de kachelborstel tegen moeders’ mooie wand in de salon. Gelukkig knipt Eliza Jane een stuk behang uit en komt moeder het nooit te weten. Daarna is het tijd om te oogsten. Alle gewassen moeten worden binnengehaald en nog veel meer. Er wordt geslacht, noten geraapt, bessen geplukt, gemaaid en alles wordt onder dak gebracht. Daarna is het tijd voor het tweede feest van het jaar: de fair. Almanzo wint een prijs met de grootste, met melk gevoede, pompoen. Zijn zussen winnen ook prijzen. Het is drie dagen feest. Daarna komt de schoenmaker en krijgt Almanzo laarzen. Daarna maakt vader een bobslee samen met Almanzo, zodat hij mee hout kan gaan halen als dat nodig is. Dat is ook weer een moment waarop Almanzo veel leert. Hij helpt vader in de schuur met dorsen. Dan is het kerstmis en krijgen ze bezoek aan de rijk gedekte tafel. Op het einde gaat Almanzo mee het teveel aan hooi verkopen. Hij vindt een goedgevulde beurs en vader bedenkt wie de eigenaar is. Almanzo vindt de eigenaar in Malone en geeft deze man zijn geld terug. Hij wordt echter beschuldigt van diefstal en krijgt een stuiver. De wagenmaker die er bij staat wordt heel boos en eist dat Almanzo 200 dollar krijgt. Daarna gaat hij mee naar vader om het uit te leggen. Tevens vraagt hij aan vader of Almanzo bij hem in de leer mag. Almanzo weet wat hij wil: boer worden, paarden trainen. Vader overlegt met moeder over de toekomst van Almanzo terwijl ze zitten te eten. Almanzo weet wat hij wil, maar moet wachten tot het hem gevraagd wordt. Dan zegt hij dat hij graag een eigen veulen wil kopen van het geld dat hij heeft gekregen. Dat vindt vader niet zo’n goed idee, maar hij geeft Almanzo Starlight, het mooiste veulen uit zijn stal.

Tekeningen:

De tekeningen van Garth Williams zijn in kleur. Er zijn natuurlijk geen echt nieuwe plaatjes bij, maar door de kleur krijgen de tekeningen wel weer wat extra. De tekeningen zijn mooi. En leuk om naar te kijken.

Eigen mening:

Boekje gekocht in 2021, eigenlijk alleen voor de ingekleurde tekeningen. En daarvoor is het de moeite waard.

This book is about Almanzo and his year on the farm in Malone. The farm was in good shape and prosperous. Almanzo quickly turns 9 years old in the book. He is a real farmer's son, used to hard work and he also likes to help. The only thing his father won't let him help with is with the young horses. Almanzo doesn't like school. He doesn't have to do it very often, but at school there are the “big boys” and they beat up the teacher and make school impossible. Almanzo is afraid of the boys and feels bad for the teacher. But then the teacher appears prepared and gives the big boys a good beating. After that, school continues as normal, but Almanzo can stay home if necessary. Like on his birthday, when he gets a yoke for his two young oxen and has to train them. But he also gets a sled. There is always a lot of food in the house and Almanzo is a good eater. His parents are both always working, but they enjoy their work. Almanzo still has a lot to learn. When he starts digging ice, he almost falls into the hole. When training the young calves, he also has to learn a lot himself. He is proud when father says that he is milking well. And his mother checks whether he has washed properly in the tub. Then spring comes and with it the work on the farm increases. Almanzo does his share of the work. He plows, sows, plants and maintains the fields. The tin peddler and butter buyer come by. And the horse buyer. Father has a nice team of horses and earns a lot of money. There are many animals on the farm, but no dog. That night a strange dog knocks at the back door. They feed the emaciated animal. That night, thanks to the grateful and alert dog, they escape a robbery. The next morning, father first takes the money to the bank. The sheep are sheared and Almanzo has to take the sheared skins to the attic. Everyone laughs at him when he rushes, but he will always be the last to finish. This also appears to be the case at lunch. But Almanzo is smarter and will probably hoist a sheep upstairs if he is the last one. In the end, the last one has the best laugh. Night frost occurs on July 4. This is disastrous for the young plants and the whole family gets up in the middle of the night to water the plants with water to prevent freezing and thus save the harvest. After that, the 4th of July is a holiday. Almanzo receives money from his father for all his hard work and buys a pig for it. Then in the summer there will be a lot of work again. And Almanzo does what needs to be done. Father and mother are going away together for a week and the 4 children; Royal, Eliza Jane, Alice and Almanzo are the bosses of the house. They make too much ice cream from almost all sugar. They don't do all the chores at the right time. And at the end, Almanzo and Eliza Jane argue and Almanzo throws the stove brush against mother's beautiful wall in the parlor. Luckily, Eliza Jane cuts out a piece of wallpaper and Mother never finds out. Then it is time to harvest. All crops need to be brought in and much more. There is slaughter, nuts are collected, berries are picked, mowed and everything is brought under a roof. Then it is time for the second party of the year: the fair. Almanzo wins a prize with the largest milk-fed pumpkin. His sisters also win prizes. It's a three-day celebration. Then the shoemaker comes and Almanzo gets boots. Then father makes a bobsled with Almanzo, so that he can go get wood if necessary. That is also a moment when Almanzo learns a lot. He helps father threshing in the barn. Then it's Christmas and they get a visit to the richly laid table. At the end, Almanzo joins in selling the excess hay. He finds a well-filled purse and father thinks about who the owner is. Almanzo finds the owner in Malone and gives this man his money back. However, he is accused of theft and receives a nickel. The wheelwright standing by becomes very angry and demands that Almanzo get 200 dollars. Then he goes to father to explain it. He also asks father if Almanzo can apprentice with him. Almanzo knows what he wants: to become a farmer, to train horses. Father consults with mother about Almanzo's future while they are eating. Almanzo knows what he wants, but has to wait until he is asked. Then he says that he would like to buy his own foal with the money he received. Father doesn't think that's a good idea, but he gives Almanzo Starlight, the most beautiful foal in his stable.

Drawings:

Garth Williams's drawings are in color. Of course there are no really new pictures, but the color does give the drawings something extra. The drawings are beautiful. And fun to watch.

Own opinion:

Booklet purchased in 2021, actually only for the colored drawings. And for that it is worth it.
