Samenvatting:

Dit volgende deel van de hoofdstuk-boeken bevat 8 hoofdstukken die met ma Ingalls te maken hebben.
1. Ma’s werk: Het gaat over dat Ma iedere dag van de week een bepaalde huishoudelijke taak heeft. Dit wordt vertelt in het kleine huis in het grote bos. Laura en Mary helpen Ma met de taken van de dag. Laura houdt van de dag dat er gekarnd wordt en dat Ma de boter dan kleurt met wortel. Ook houdt Laura van de dagen dat er gebakken wordt.
2. Ma en de beer: Pa gaat naar de stad en komt laat thuis. Ma moet de koe gaan verzorgen en Laura mag mee. Als ze buiten komt, lijkt het of de koe in de omheinde wei staat. Ma en Laura lopen er op af, maar dan blijkt dat het dier bij het hek toch niet de koe is. Ma vertelt Laura gauw terug te gaan naar het huis en komt snel achter haar aan. Pas in het huis vraagt Laura of het een beer was, bij het hek, en Ma bevestigt dat. Ze komen veilig terug in het huis en er wordt nog nagepraat over de beer, ook met Pa als hij terug is.
3. Strohoeden en gepelde mais: Dit hoofdstuk gaat over dat Ma hoeden maakt van stro voor het hele gezin. Laura maakt een hoed voor pop Charlotte. Ma oogst de noten en groente en Laura en Mary helpen haar. Laura kijkt hoe Ma de pompoenen bewerkt. Dan brengt Pa mais-kolven naar de blokhut en Ma maakt gepelde mais.
4. kamp maken: Dit is een hoofdstuk uit het kleine huis op de prairie. De familie reist naar Kansas. Op rustdagen maakt Ma het kamp netjes en prettig. Als Pa gaat jagen, doet Ma de was. Laura en Mary plukken bloemen en helpen Ma als dat nodig is. Als de dag voorbij is, valt Laura in slaapt op muziek van de viool.
5. Het mooie huis: Dit hoofdstuk is uit het kleine huis bij de rivier. Pa heeft besloten om een echt huis te bouwen voor Ma. Pa bouwt het huis en het heeft twee kamers en een zolder. Ook regelt Pa een nieuw fornuis voor Ma, wat hij wel laat zien aan Mary en Laura, maar wat ze niet aan Ma mogen vertellen. Ma is blij verrast als ze het nieuwe fornuis ziet. Mary en Laura helpen Ma met het maken van gordijnen en het inrichten van het mooie huis. Uiteindelijk pakt Ma het porseleinen herderinnetje uit.
6. Naar de kerk: Op een avond vertelt Pa aan Ma dat de nieuwe kerk af is en dat de dominee heeft gevraagd of de familie Ingalls naar de preek wil komen luisteren. Ma is blij verheugd. Ma heeft net haar nieuwe jurk af en ziet er heel mooi uit. In de haast op zondagochtend heeft Ma de verkeerde haarlinten in de haren van de meisjes gedaan. Laura heeft blauwe linten en Mary heeft de roze. Laura is nog nooit eerder bij een dienst geweest en kijkt naar alle mensen in hun mooie kleren en naar de dominee. Dan wordt ze meegenomen door een dame naar de zondagsschool. Na de dienst vraagt de dominee aan Laura of ze de kerk leuk vond en dat ze dan vaker mag komen.
7. Charlotte maken: in het huis bij de rivier krijgt Ma, Mary en Laura bezoek van Mw Nelson en haar dochtertje Anna. Terwijl Ma kletst met Mw Nelson, moeten Laura en Mary met Anna spelen. Eerst geven ze Anna de papieren poppen, maar Anna maakt ze kapot. Mary zegt Laura pop Charlotte te gaan halen, want die kan Anna niet stuk maken. Anna speelt met de pop, maar als ze gaat wil Anna de pop houden. Ma zegt tegen Laura dat ze Anna Charlotte moet geven. Laura is daar heel verdrietig over. Enige dagen later gaat Laura bij de Nelson’s vragen of er een brief van Pa is. Ze ziet Charlotte op het erf in een plas liggen en neemt Charlotte mee terug naar huis. Samen met Ma herstelt Laura Charlotte weer.
8. Een nieuw thuis: Dit is een hoofdstuk uit het kleine huis bij het Zilvermeer. Pa heeft een heel klein huisje gebouwd op de claim, de spullen passen er nauwelijks in. Ma en Laura passen en meten tot alles past. Pa gaat weg om bomen te halen, die daarna om het kleine huisje heen worden geplaatst.

Tekeningen:

Bij elke hoofdstuk staat een mooi, gevoelvol plaatje getekend door Renée Graef. Ze zijn deels afgeleid van tekeningen van Garth Williams, maar toch weer net uniek en zeker heel warm en liefdevol. De eerste tekening is van Ma die aan het karnen is, terwijl Mary en Laura erbij staan te snoepen. Dan de tekening van Ma die de beer bij het hek een klap geeft. Dan Ma aan het werk in een wastobbe. Een plaatje van de familie Ingalls die op de prairie zit te eten. Dan Ma die enthousiast kijkt naar het nieuwe fornuis in het nieuwe huis, terwijl Mary en Laura om haar heen dansen. Laura en Mary in een lokaal, waar Laura uit het raam naar buiten zit te kijken. Ma met Laura op schoot in de schommelstoel. Laura heeft kapotte Charlotte vast en vertelt Ma wat er gebeurd is. En als laatste plaatje: Pa plant een populier en Ma helpt hem daarmee.

Eigen mening:

Een dun boekje met verhalen over Ma. De teksten zijn bekend. Het gaat mij om de plaatjes en die zijn mooi en lieflijk.

This next part of the chapter books contains 8 chapters related to Ma Ingalls.

1. Ma's work: It's about Ma having a certain household task every day of the week. This is told in the little house in the big Woods. Laura and Mary help Ma with the tasks of the day. Laura likes the day when churning takes place and when Ma colors the butter with carrot. Laura also enjoys baking days.

2. Ma and the Bear: Pa goes to town and comes home late. Ma has to take care of the cow and Laura can come along. When she comes outside, it looks like the cow is in the fenced pasture. Ma and Laura walk towards it, but then it turns out that the animal at the fence is not the cow after all. Ma tells Laura to go back to the house quickly and quickly follows after her. Only inside the house does Laura ask if it was a bear at the fence, and Ma confirms that. They return safely to the house and they continue to talk about the bear, including with Pa when he returns.

3. Straw hats and hulled corn: This chapter is about Ma making straw hats for the whole family. Laura makes a hat for doll Charlotte. Ma harvests the nuts and vegetables and Laura and Mary help her. Laura watches Ma work the pumpkins. Then Pa brings corn cobs to the cabin and Ma makes hulled corn.

4. making camp: This is a chapter from Little House on the Prairie. The family travels to Kansas. On rest days, Ma makes the camp neat and pleasant. When Pa goes hunting, Ma does the laundry. Laura and Mary pick flowers and help Ma when necessary. When the day is over, Laura falls asleep to the music of the violin.

5. The Beautiful House: This chapter is from On the Banks of Plum Creek. Pa has decided to build a real house for Ma. Pa builds the house and it has two rooms and an attic. Pa also arranges a new stove for Ma, which he shows to Mary and Laura, but which they are not allowed to tell Ma. Ma is pleasantly surprised when she sees the new stove. Mary and Laura help Ma make curtains and decorate the beautiful house. Finally, Ma unpacks the porcelain shepherdess.

6. To church: One evening, Pa tells Ma that the new church is finished and that the reverend has asked if the Ingalls family would like to come and listen to the sermon. Ma is happily delighted. Ma has just finished her new dress and it looks very beautiful. In her haste on Sunday morning, Ma put the wrong hair ribbons in the girls' hair. Laura has blue ribbons and Mary has the pink ones. Laura has never been to a service before and looks at all the people in their nice clothes and at the reverend. Then a lady takes her to Sunday school. After the service, the reverend asks Laura if she liked church and if she could come more often.

7. Making Charlotte: In on the banks of Plum Creek, Ma, Mary and Laura are visited by Mrs. Nelson and her daughter Anna. While Ma chats with Mrs. Nelson, Laura and Mary have to play with Anna. First they give Anna the paper dolls, but Anna tears them. Mary tells Laura to go get Charlotte doll, because Anna can’t tear her. Anna plays with the doll, but when she goes, Anna wants to keep the doll. Ma tells Laura to give Anna Charlotte. Laura is very sad about that. A few days later, Laura goes to the Nelson's to ask if there is a letter from Pa. She sees Charlotte lying in a puddle in the yard and takes Charlotte back home. Together with Ma, Laura repairs Charlotte.

8. A new home: This is a chapter from By the shores of Silver Lake. Pa built a very small house on the claim, the things barely fit in it. Ma and Laura try and measure until everything fits. Pa goes away to get trees, which are then placed around the little house.

Drawings:

Each chapter contains a beautiful, soulful picture drawn by Renée Graef. They are partly derived from drawings by Garth Williams, but still unique and certainly very warm and loving. The first drawing is of Ma churning, while Mary and Laura stand by and snack. Then the drawing of Ma slapping the bear at the fence. Than Ma working in a wash tub. A picture of the Ingalls family eating on the prairie. Then Ma who looks enthusiastically at the new stove in the new house, while Mary and Laura dance around her. Laura and Mary in a room, where Laura is looking out the window. Ma with Laura on her lap in the rocking chair. Laura holds broken Charlotte and tells Ma what happened. And the last picture: Pa plants a cottonwoods tree and Ma helps him with it.

Own opinion:

A small book with stories about Ma. The lyrics are known. For me it's all about the pictures and they are beautiful and lovely.
