Samenvatting:

Het boek gaat over de ontwikkeling van de boeken, de samenwerking tussen Rose en Laura. Er wordt even vluchtig over het leven en de jeugd van Laura vertelt. Daarna over de jaren met Almanzo en dan over Rose. Veel over Rose. Uiteindelijk de collaboratie tussen Laura en Rose bij het schrijven van de boeken. Daarna gaat het vooral over Rose en haar ontwikkeling. Er worden heel veel dingen genoemd die uit de brieven van Rose zijn gehaald. De moeilijke situatie tussen de twee vrouwen wordt vaak benoemd. Dat Laura en Almanzo verhuizen naar het Rockhouse en Rose het farmhouse overneemt. Dat Laura en Almanzo op een bepaald moment graag weer terug willen naar hun huis, als Rose er weg is en alleen een inwonende vrouw en de jongens Turner er nog wonen. Dat daar onenigheid over is. Over dat Rose beter op afstand kan zijn. Dat Rose vooral alleen de laatste boeken heeft geschreven. Hoe Rose haar ideeën terugkomen in de boeken. De vrijheid, het onafhankelijk. Hoe Rose in depressies raakt, altijd geldzorgen heeft, zich moeilijk settelt, wie haar vrienden zijn met wie ze veel schrijft. Hoe ze uiteindelijk libertarian wordt. De titel doet wel of beide vrouwen libertarian zijn, maar dat is toch vooral Rose. Uiteindelijk wordt het testament van Laura besproken en hoe Rose in de jaren daarna met de papieren en boeken omgaat en het uiteindelijk overdraagt aan Roger Lea MacBride, die er commercieel gebruik van maakt, ipv het geven van de rechten aan de bibliotheek in Mansfield, wat Laura had gewild. Op het einde zijn er twee toevoegingen hoe en waar de papieren van Laura en Rose allemaal zijn. En uit welke teksten gebruik is gemaakt van zinnen en gegevens. En wat er allemaal is aan boeken ed.

Het boek leest wel, maar is wel erg op Rose gericht. Eerst ook nog wel op Laura en haar kant van het verhaal, maar later vooral op Rose. Omdat van Rose nu eenmaal meer bewaart is gebleven en meer bekend is. Het is wel duidelijk dat de boeken door de vrouwen samen zijn geschreven. Dat Laura de opzet deed en Rose het polijstte en de swung er aan gaf en het verhaal aandikte. Maar ook hoe ze haar eigen betrokkenheid verborgen hield. Eigenlijk bevat het boek heel veel informatie en ook best wel gedetailleerd.

Er staan een paar foto’s centraal in het boek. Bekende foto’s, van de Hoover Library. Wel scherpe foto’s. De bekende foto’s van de drie zusjes, Rose als peuter en op haar afstuderen. Ook de foto van Laura en Rose in het ravijn en de foto van Almanzo en Laura met buren op de veranda. Verschillende foto’s van Rose in het buitenland. En fotos van het interieur van Rocky Ridge Farm. De foto van Almanzo en Laura met hun hond voor het Rockhouse. Dan nog foto’s van de vrienden van Rose Helen Boylston en Ernestine Evans, Roger Lea MacBride en Norma Lee Browning.

Eigen mening:

Wel een interessant boek, maar moeilijk leesbaar. Leest niet vloeiend. Wel veel informatie. Het leest toch wel hoor, maar af en toe een beetje taai. Het is geen verhaal, een opsomming van heel veel feiten die nauwkeurig bij elkaar zijn gezocht en op een rijtje gezet. Het is nog een vrij recent boek. Wel interessant.

Als inwoner van Nederland ben ik niet goed op de hoogte van Libertarians.

Resume:

The book is about the development of the books, the collaboration between Rose and Laura. Laura's life and youth are briefly discussed. Then we met Almanzo and then Rose over the years. A lot about Rose. Ultimately, the collaboration between Laura and Rose in writing the books. After that it is mainly about Rose and her development. There are many things mentioned that are removed from Rose's letters. The mysterious situation between the two women is often shared. That Laura and Almanzo move to the Rockhouse and Rose takes over the farm. That Laura and Almanzo would like to return to their house at some point, when Rose is gone and only a resident woman and the Turner boys still live there. That unity is over. About how it's better for Rose to be at a distance. That Rose mainly only wrote the last books. How Rose repeats her ideas in the books. The freedom, the independence. How depression is harmful to Rose, always has financial worries, has difficulty settling down, who her friends are with whom she writes a lot. How they eventually become libertarian. The title suggests that both women are libertarians, but that is mainly Rose. Ultimately, Laura's will is discussed and how Rose deals with the papers and books in the years that follow, eventually transferring it to Roger Lea MacBride, who makes commercial use of it, instead of giving the rights to the library in Mansfield, what Laura had wanted. At the end there are two additions about how and where all of Laura and Rose's papers are. And from which texts sentences and data have been used. And what there is in terms of books, etc.

The book is a good read, but is very focused on Rose. At first also on Laura and her side of the story, but later mainly on Rose. Because more has been preserved and known about Rose. It is clear that the books were written by the women together. That Laura did the setup and Rose polished it and gave it the swing and thickened the story. But also how she kept her own involvement hidden. In terms of content, the book contains a lot of information and is also quite detailed.

There are a few photographs central to the book. Famous photos, Hoover Library. Sharp photos. The famous photos of the three sisters, Rose as a toddler and at her graduation. Also the photo of Laura and Rose in the ravine and the photo of Almanzo and Laura with neighbors on the porch. Various photos of Rose abroad. And photos of the interior of Rocky Ridge Farm. The photo of Almanzo and Laura with their dog in front of the Rockhouse. Then photos of Rose's friends Helen Boylston and Ernestine Evans, Roger Lea MacBride and Norma Lee Browning.

Own opinion:

An interesting book, but difficult to understand. Read not flowing. A lot of information. It's a good read, but a bit tough at times. It is not a story, a summary of many facts that have been carefully collected and put together in a sequential manner. It is a relatively recent book. Quite interesting.

As a resident of the Netherlands, I am not well informed about Libertarians.
